Trautmann struggling on with his injury was one of the iconic moments at the old Wembley, up there with the White Horse Final and Bobby Moore on the shoulders of his teammates in 1966. Lovely to see this great old footage and a true gentleman and real legend in Bert Trautmann.
Bert Trautmann is a true football Legend! One of the best goalkeepers in history. His commitment to mend the relationship between Germany and Britain is truely fantastic. Best ever City player! A really fair sportsman.
He did indeed! When the victory parade was held in Manchester after the game, thousands of people were chanting his name. This was in a city that just eleven years earlier had been flattened by German bombers. Yet here the people of Manchester were chanting his name. Quite a story
The russian keeper Lev Jaschin said:" There are only two world-class keepers. I and the german guy who play in Manchester. Thank you for posting it and greetings from Germany
i went to see man city vs birmingham with my family last season where we won 5-1 and there was a little ceremony with trautmann mainly about this game and how he helped anglo-german relations was a great day sounded like a massive lightning storm when we all started clapping
"even manchester united supporters will be cheering" so true, most united fans, even today, are majorly impressed by bert trautman carrying on playing!
Trautmann was released from a prisoner of war camp in 1948 -signed for Man City in 49 amid huge protests - 20,000 people at one rally.but soon endeared himself to fans due to his performances at the club.Must be rated as one of best keepers of all time.
He obviously was a badass, but these day we know better, playing on with a broken neck could have caused spinal cord damage leaving him paralyzed or dead. at the very least this probably took years off his career. that's why things like this don't happen anymore, it's not because footballers are pussies it's because medical science has got better...RIP Bert Trautmann.
obviously, the commentator had no idea about the extent of trautmann's injury. "he's probably forgotten all about his bad neck now". trautmann spent three days with the broken neck before going to the doctor, as the pain was unbearable. closer inspection revealed that his neck was broken in 3 places. the wembley doctors, however, failed to notice an injury.
The other guy feeling his knee just looks like an idiot considering Trautman is suffering 50 times his pain and successfully standing and ready to continue playing
Wow, almost a wonder that he stayed on his feet. An interesting thing is that Trautmann, obviously a legend in England, is pretty unknown in Germany. Probably because he never played for the national team.
@tine214 Yes they did have their own commentator, Peter Lloyd. If you're interested in this sort of stuff I thoroughly recommend this website [homepage.ntlworld.com/carousel/ITVfootball68-83.html] and this page [homepage.ntlworld.com/carousel/ITV/cupfinals_bw.html] in particular.
@Fischer12345 He probably would've played for the national team but he was not willing to give up his spot at Manchester City, and the national team wouldn't play him if he wasn't close and able to play without traveling far.
No... sorry but that is not true! Germany already had a great goal keeper at this time with Anton "Toni" Turek (World Cup winner 1954) plus a bunch of highly talented keepers in the backhand! The german coach was never interested in Trautmann - He probably didn`t even know him!

Don Revie was immense in this match, his role is forgotten today, but it was revolutionary
i went to see man city vs birmingham with my family last season where we won 5-1 and there was a little ceremony with trautmann mainly about this game and how he helped anglo-german relations was a great day sounded like a massive lightning storm when we all started clapping
Bert Trautmann, what a guy.
Bert Trautmann and Chuck Norris once both tried to roundhouse kick each other and collided. The result was the European Cup.

@tine214 You're right, this is BBC coverage but ITV did show the 1956 Final live, it was their first.
Fantastic video.
Trautmann is tougher than nails!
And Trautmann's neck was broken! Kudos to the man.
RIP Bert Trautmann

This was ITV's first FA Cup Final.
Two of my uncles played for Man City, Tommy Oakes and Jimmy Oakes.
obviously, the commentator had no idea about the extent of trautmann's injury.

Christiano Ronaldo hits a light breeze and his out for the season, but this guy stands up to play with a broken neck!
@mcfcvideos remove the brackets and the dash between 'carouse' and 'l' in those urls btw.
R.I.P :(

@Schwabbeldinho I don't know about "best" but they sure are badass.
@JCA1712 thats actually the funniest thing ever XD
what a shame football is such a wimpy sport now and the extent of money players receive is silly
@jackchrisevans he was he was a german paratrooper
@Fischer12345 He probably would've played for the national team but he was not willing to give up his spot at Manchester City, and the national team wouldn't play him if he wasn't close and able to play without traveling far.
Apparently, trautman was a german prisoner of war from WW2
@JCA1712 emile heskey!
bottom of the screen at 3:00
In today's day and age it is... Sadly.
@JCA1712 Hehe, complete accident.
So when he joined the German army. How did he still manage to play in the uk? I would of said no!
No... sorry but that is not true!
