Manager of a TAP Plastics store here! Love the video, and thanks for the shout out Adam! We are all big fans of you at my store! You actually did pretty good! Just trim the masking rather than peeling entirely next time. That allows you to see your glue joint while still protecting the rest of the sheet. Anywhere you get the cement that you don't want, you can always use a clean buffing wheel with no rouge on it to take out the hazing from the glue

@@alancastaneda8322 so that was actually a little spout that weld on used to sell standard with all of their packaging. Unfortunately they do not use this any longer and we just exclusively use the HDPE funnels with a straw dispenser tip on the cement.

A nice addition would be a mirror on the back (or just set the case in front of a mirror) so someone can see themselves with the beard when they look at it.

Good idea for added function but I really dig the clean look of the clear box (as far as aesthetics go)

The only situations i can imagine someone needing that beard in an emergency is when they need an authentic sea captain from the 1800s to tell them stories about whaling, When they need to see a prospector regarding whether or not theres gold in these hills, or when they need a lone biker to give them a fist bump in traffic.

There's something about the format of your videos that just makes me feel like I'm hanging out with you at the shop. I love it! I love your building style and how happy it makes you too.
I used to work as an architectural model maker and one of my favourite jobs was making the acrylic guards for the models because I would get to flame polish like 30 feet worth of 1/4 inch acrylic and it was so satisfying!
There is something "very lovely" about that display case! Thanks for sharing - I've just last week arranged a huge sheet of acrylic to make some display boxes... and then saw this!! Wish me luck!
My favorite builds are the ones where Adam finishes it and just starts laughing, it's so wholesome!

Me: Yes, but why so short?
Sign maker person dude guy here! So, if you want an edge that's super flat and clean you saw cut (triple chip blades are your friend) over-sized 0.125". However you do not need an edger/joiner/jointer! You need a mounted router or even a dremel and straight cut router bit. Works exactly the same and far more likely to be in the home shop. Then you shave .0625" off each edge and you're good to go. Best part is if you use a bearing bottom straight cut bit then you can make a template out of wood or scrap plastic or whatever and now you can produce exact matching multiple parts.
Adam, I am very impressed by that perfect centering by eye! Something similar happened to me when I was swapping a new rack into my car, I couldn't find my caliper and just centered the new rack by eye, and when I found my caliper later and checked it, it was accurate to less than a mm. 😂

But the real thing is that you made the box and that you like the box and that you are sharing both of those with the internet.
***THERE'S MORE THAN ONE WAY TO MAKE A BOX***
You could get a better flame polish with more heat. You do want it to get melty but don't let it burn (acrylic can catch on fire). Oh, and try not to polish before gluing. The solvent can craze the joint (cause a web of tiny cracks in the plastic).
I’ve actually done this for a living. Here’s some tips. Set up a router table it’s the same edge you get from a jointer. Set up an oxygen & hydrogen torch for flame polishing exposed edges. Acetylene introduces soot it’s objectionable.
Do not glue sanded or flame polished edges. This introduces heat which has a lasting effect even after the heat has dissipated. The acrylic will craze after glueing.
Use a glass cutter to score your paper masking. Then use kerosene on a dampened cloth to allow the adhesive to release on the scored line. The glass cutter will not scratch the acrylic unless you make unnecessary multiple passes. Sand the acrylic if you are going to wheel buff. But do not glue that surface. The router table is key. You can achieve 0.001 accuracy. You can use 3M double stick to flush trim to a template for repeatability.
Flame polishing requires some practice.

Cast is the higher quality and better lends itself to successful fabrication techniques. Use extruded for cheap alternative framed glazing.

Took me back a long time. I my first job I prepared pathological specimens for display. Most were in acrylic boxes, and a few embedded in solid acrylic. To get the edges true and polished I used fine carborundum grit in a slurry a plate glass sheet.

I was fortunate enough to learn how to work with acrylic in 7th grade shop class, and I used those techniques again in 12th grade in a manufacturing class. I learned how to use so many different materials and tools from those public education classes and it made me more marketable as a general worker just because I knew how to use tools that other people just never learned. I wish I'd taken all of the shop related classes I could have during my school years. We need shop classes in our schools so any individual can have at least that basic working knowledge of common tools and the lifelong benefit to that knowledge.

I once saw a pair of loudspeakers with clear acrylic boxes at a show. Only to show the wiring and crossovers inside but they stole the show! Everyone wanted a pair regardless of sound quality!

Hey Adam! Been watching your 1-day builds for some time now and I've been working with acrylic for over 10years. I love Tapp plastics, but there are some things that need to be addressed. First, the acrylic should NEVER be cut on a table saw, as it leaves large grooves (tooth marks) in the acrylic. If you really want museum-quality cuts, you should use a laser cutter, otherwise half of your time will be spent smoothing the edges and it will never become uniform. First, even a high-quality laser cutter can leave remnants on the edges, which will create bubbles and laser etchings when you 'flood' the edges of the the acrylic with weld (#3). On the laser cut edges, you should use a 400-grit or higher sand paper to very lightly smooth it out any inconsistencies from the laser cutter to prevent bubbles when you lay down the acrylic weld. You need to use a square on each side to ensure that there is a proper 90-degre angle on each side. No need for tape if you use a square and take your time (hold for 3+ minutes with pressure at each side). Because the tape will eventually throw off the angles and dimensions of the box. Also, you NEVER want to vertically pour the weld, as it will cause the weld to run down the sides of the acrylic. The weld should always poured flat/horizontally to not only ensure that it doesn't drip, but it will also flood the seem of the acrylic. BTW...My builds have also been featured in Make Magazine ;-)
Ever since High School, I have been mailing my best friend my handlebar moustache/beard whenever I cut it off. I use double-sided tape to attach it to a piece of paper, then carefully snip near skin level so I can maintain the shape/presentation of it. His girlfriend (now wife) always yells at him for putting them on a fridge like a proud daddy (they don't have kids, only cats). I certainly appreciate the attention to my hard work and face gardening. I think next time I'm going to glue it to that gossamer base material and put it in a case like this - thanks for the inspiration!

Im not going to lie....I fast forward the video to see the end result but landed on a mid section with the beard and I totally thought it was real! Thats how good of a prop it is and I was totally fooled! Didnt realize it was fake until I started from the beginning. LOL! GG beard.

My first (and actually only) time of building an acrylic box was way back when. I was so worried about the glue that I chose to use white acrylic for the only part that needed to be glued, that is the top, sides and bottom. Even that I made by bending the 4 corners using my that time 80 W soldering iron. The only glued seam I made as a butt joint at the center of the "bottom". I got somewhere instructions for making the glue and that was simply dissolving some of the same white acrylic into the purchased solvent so that I got a half paste fluid. The reason for that was to avoid wicking. Worked adequately well. For the front and back I mounted small strips inside with the same glue. Then I matched my black acrylic front and back panels to the less than straight rectangle openings. Finally I spread a thin layer of the made glue along the inner edges of the rim (both front and back) to form slight friction locks for the two panels. It worked and I was proud and happy about my result (just like you know who!). But just like the great master adviced, I also decided not to pursue my luck with any further acrylic boxes.
Watching your hero and inspiration breathe in that acrylic dust is so excruciatingly painful. We love you adam or we wouldn't be here! Im sure all of us would for you to continue to be here as well.. i KNOW you have a respirator brother. Use it!

If you do not have a Jointer, I have found a router to do a good job. To be specific, I like to cut templates for each piece out of 1/4" MDF. I'll then cut my acrylic about 1/8" larger than my desired size. Then I'll use a flush cut router bit with my templates as guides and I am always happy with the results.
Adam as always thanks for sharing. It wasn't kerf you were looking for it was hook, AKA rake. The angle of 0° or even a few degrees negative works best on hard plastics. Saw blades with a lot of positive rake will give you poor edge quality and can even cause your plastic to shatter.

I'd like to see you make one of those boxes they use to move equipment for bands when they go on tour. Typically grey, solid metal corners and metal along the edges, heavy latches.... I have not seen anyone build a decent one yet. Then you can use it to move items you wear to a convention.

Nice (well, okay... adequate) job. It does look a little like a miniature orangutan hanging from a branch so it's good you labelled it to avoid confusion (because, if you haven't already, you will one day make a miniature orangutan hanging from a branch and any mistakes could result in a cosplay faux pas)

i've made acrylic boxes through work, had to teach myself, what i learned here is squeezing the bottle. That being said, UV glue, much better, gives you time to get it right, to work, clean and reset as necessary before curing it.

Watching him make this and refuse to use a laser cutter felt like watching an episode of primitive technology
I don't know enough about laser cutting to say for sure, but I think it's not the best tool for the job here. For this type of glueing operation to work best you want the pieces to be very flat against each other and let capillary action draw the fluid into the seam.
When laser cutting thicker materials like this the sides of the pieces end up with a bit of an angle, so the surfaces wont sit flush against each other (if you want the box to be perfectly square that is).
Am I the only one that pictured Jamie as Dr. Zoidberg when Adam was describing how his mustache vacuumed up the sesame seeds
