  • It's the lure of kayaking into the sea caves of the Apostle Islands that drew us to this most northern point in Wisconsin, but while we're here we've been positively smitten with the beauty of the Bayfield Peninsula. Join us as we tour Washburn, Bayfield, Little Sand Bay, Cornucopia and Madeline Island from our campsite at the Memorial Park Campground in Washburn, and of course kayak from Meyers Beach to paddle among the famed Mainland Sea Caves of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

    Welcome to Grand Adventure, a UA-cam channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, always filmed in stunning 4K.
    We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the western U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and dog Zoe are avid boondockers, so you'll seldom find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds. Instead, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. And unlike most other RV channels on UA-cam, we're not RV dealers or full-timers -- we're "long-timers" who tend to hit the road for weeks or months at a time, while maintaining a sticks-and-bricks home in Utah.

    I was one of the campground hosts right across from you when you were at Memorial Park in Washburn. You did a great job of capturing some of the beauty of our area. I’d like to add a bit to your description of the city of Washburn. We have a full-service marina and the most undeveloped shoreline on the Chequamegon Bay, which has a walking trail along the lake from one end of town to the other. There are several good restaurants in town including one with wood fired pizza and a fantastic bakery in the heart of downtown. There are a couple of art galleries, a well established used bookstore and a micro brewery, among other businesses. When on the way to Bayfield, be sure to check out Washburn!

    Nice job Marc! You nailed a wonderful day at Meyers beach. Glad to see the Kayak got out. That's what I was referencing to in my previous comment. Memorial campground is nice. Glad to see you got a piece of our backyard. Sand Island is doable from Little Sand Bay. Nice caves on Sand. Devils Island is special. This one is out a bit so not to be done without a good plan and support. Take care! I'll keep watching!

      Thanks CP! Yep, this was a special stop that we enjoyed immensely. I contemplated Sand Island but decided against it, and ruled out Devils Island because I was paddling solo. The mainland sea caves seemed like a much safer choice for a guy paddling alone.

    It reminds me so much of Pictured Rocks Nat'l Lakeshore and the beautiful little town of Munising. The Apostle Islands just moved up on my list...I just told Scotty next summer :)

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  3 роки тому

      That's a valid comparison, and one that we made ourselves because we moved from Pictured Rocks to the Keweenaw Peninsula to Apostle Islands all in succession. However, Apostle Islands topped that list for us, and the Keweenaw took second. It was close between all three for us, however.

    While the majority of your videos are places I haven't been, I got a kick out of this one because I go to Bayfield and Madeline island almost every summer. Last summer I even camped at the same campground you did in Washburn. I travel in a Roadtrek camper van and I camped right next to another RT owner who told me they are there every summer and there they were again in your video. They were even at the exact same spot as last year! Cornucopia has a great swimming area, I waded out over a hundred feet and the water was only up to my neck and pure sand. Not a single plant, stone or stick. I was shocked that such a beach would exist up there. I've never done it myself but during the winter folks walk out to ice caves where you kayaked to and enjoy the spectacular ice formations.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  3 роки тому

      That's great, James! That Roadtrek owner David and his wife Julie are camp hosts there this summer, and winter near where we used to live in Florida. We enjoyed chatting with them while we were there. We'd love to see the ice caves, but you have to time it perfectly right.

      It really is Lori! That's why it gets that gorgeous green hue from above -- remarkably clear water and a sandy bottom that's shockingly devoid of vegetation. We've heard that Superior is the cleanest and clearest of the Great Lakes, and we believe it.

    Great video Mark! I loved seeing Madeline Island. I remember taking our tent trailer on the ferry and camping at Big Bay SP. When we got back to the mainland there were hundreds of people everywhere. Little did we know it was “Apple Fest” week.
    We’ve done the Apostle Islands cruise but to see the sea caves from a kayak was amazing. We’re heading up to the North Shore of Lake Superior next week. Being from Minnesota we try to make it up there once a month.
    Thanks for your Grand Adventures. Very enjoyable.

      You're most welcome, Jim, and thanks for watching! We wanted to make it to the North Shore on this trip, too, but we just couldn't find anything that we liked to stay during the period that was available to us. We're planning to head to Quebec after the border reopens, so hitting the North Shore en route to Quebec makes sense to us once that happens.

      It’s very tough to get into the state parks up there. I usually book a year in advance. Now they’re changing the reservation window to 4 months out instead of 12. There’s a new campground in Silver Bay. We will try that in October. Good luck.

    That was a nice enjoyable video!
    Love the small town feel. Kind of reminds me of taking the ferry between the islands in the San Juan Islands in Washington.
    Obviously the Sea Caves was the climax of the video.
    In one scene you are venturing into a crack. Was there a way out or did you have to back all the way out?
    You are very wise to know your limits. I appreciated that when you made the decision not to venture across the open water.
    This reminds me of the rangers asking the hikers going down to the river in the Grand Canyon how far the are planning to hike down. Big mistake to plan on going down until you get tired and then turn around, because now you have to hike back up!
    Your videos just keep getting better Marc! 👍🏼👍🏽

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks Ram! That ferry to Madeline Island was indeed reminiscent of the WA state ferries, and the Apostle Islands themselves definitely have parallels to the San Juans. As for "small town feel," I think that you're going to love the new video premiere next week. It's called "Small Town America" and for that one, we tried something unique: spend a 3-day weekend in a North Dakota prairie town with a population of only 900 people, sharing life in that small town using only our cameras (i.e. only visuals to tell the town's story, no narration) and without ever leaving the boundaries of that town. But first you'll have to come with us to Fargo this week. 😉
      They put a lot of thought into naming that crack. It's called "The Crack". 😄 And there's no other way out, you need to back out.
      While Superior was benign on the day I paddled the sea caves, it's seldom that way. I was less concerned about my endurance than I was about paddling alone across 4 or 5 miles of open 50-degree water. I've traveled as much as 25 miles a day in a kayak, for multiple days in a row, but I also know that things can go horribly wrong in a hurry and I don't feel like being the subject of the sequel to the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

    Marc, like you said... the small towns along Lake Superior are fabulous laid back coastal communities. Great places to visit and relax.
    I gather that the striped green on the cave walls is due to the presence of copper deposits in the region.
    I think it would also be nice to be there when it's stormy and experience that favor as well. Not as enduring as the sunny calm days... though.
    Gord

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  3 роки тому +1

      Couldn't agree more Gord! Some of that green is from lichens growing on the rock; not sure if the copper is present that far west or not. We fell in love with the entire Lake Superior area.

      I can't imagine, and I was thankful to find such a calm day. It's not only the wave height that's the problem, it's also the rebound waves that form when a wave reflects off the cliff walls and then combines with the next incoming wave and amplifies it.

      Yeah, we had fun with that soundtrack in the intro clip. You might also notice that I was open-mouthed the entire time paddling. It's stunning to be there, and we could only try to capture it and only partially succeed.

      Our pleasure, Scott. They're truly amazing. Our top pick for bucket list kayaking is still the Green River down into Canyonlands ua-cam.com/video/vjVX51y3vq4/v-deo.html but for a day trip, the Apostle Islands sea caves rank right up there.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks as always William! The waves across the open fetch of Lake Superior can be bad enough, but when they reflect off the cave walls they meet the subsequent incoming waves and form "rebound waves," in which they combine and amplify their height. Combine that with the fact that there's virtually nowhere to get out of the water, as the cliff walls are vertical straight down into the water, and you have a recipe for disaster in the wrong conditions. Fortunately, things could not have been any better on the day that we chose.

    Marc I have been to the bayfield area twice during the fall season. The colors are amazing. Are there any campgrounds that are right on the water? We have two kayaks that we carry in our motorhome. We only stay near the shore and would like to yak near where we camp because we have no toad to carry kayaks.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  3 роки тому

      Yup John, there are several campgrounds that we saw that immediately come to mind. There's Memorial Park where we stayed, and also West End Park, both operated by the town of Washburn. There's a campground operated by the town of Russell right at Little Sand Bay of the National Lakeshore. There's also an RV park at the casino in Red Cliff. All are right on the water, although none are truly within kayaking distance of the Mainland Sea Caves. The closest would be the Town of Russell campground and while that's doable, it's a fairly healthy paddle to the sea caves.
      We're certain the leaves in autumn up there are stunning -- enjoy!

    What app did you use to monitor the weather to pick a day to kayak to the sea caves? It sure looked like a perfect day. Beautiful video.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  3 роки тому +1

      Thank you Julie! I'm admittedly a bit of a weather geek. It comes from being an avid skier, and former sailor and windsurfer. So rather than relying on an app, I was monitoring graphical representations of weather models and detailed NOAA marine forecasts. It looked like that Tuesday was going to be the best day of the week, and it turned out to be positively ideal.
      If you're an Android user, check out FlowX. It plots weather forecasts in graphical form, allowing you to highlight individual elements like temperature, windspeed and wind direction, precipitation, cloud cover, etc.
