  • The charmingly restored North Dakota cowboy town of Medora, population only 112, sits just below the butte that we're camping atop, and serves as the gateway community to Theodore Roosevelt National Park with wooden planked sidewalks, old fashioned ice cream parlors, and buggy rides. We're boondocking on the Little Missouri National Grassland as we explore the National Park and its diverse wildlife including bison (buffalo), prairie dogs, wild horses, prairie dogs and more, as well as the town of Medora, Chateau de Mores State Historic Site and more!

    ABOUT US
    Welcome to Grand Adventure, a UA-cam channel that focuses on RV-centric outdoor activities including not only of course camping, but also mountain biking, hiking, kayaking, skiing and more, always filmed in stunning 4K.
    We're based in Salt Lake City, Utah, and invite you to come along as we travel all around the western U.S. My wife Patricia and I, and dog Zoe are avid boondockers, so you'll seldom find us in RV parks or even dry campgrounds. Instead, we're usually camped in some of the most remote and beautiful spots that you could ever pull a travel trailer into. And unlike most other RV channels on UA-cam, we're not RV dealers or full-timers -- we're "long-timers" who tend to hit the road for weeks or months at a time, while maintaining a sticks-and-bricks home in Utah.
    We'll provide beautiful travel videos, as well as some tips and insight on trip planning, and equipping and maintaining your RV to make your next adventure a grand one indeed! So, subscribe to make sure that you catch every episode, and remember...life is nothing but a Grand Adventure!

    I have viewed this episode several times. Being that I live in North Dakota and visit the area 5 to 6 times a year, I get to view and photograph the area during all seasons. You have created what I feel is one of the best videos on the area along with the best narration describing Medora and the National Park. The fact that you also video the inside of the Cowboy Hall of Fame and the home of the De Mores family with soft background music it becomes an easy to absorb what the viewer is seeing, GREAT JOB!

    Back to Boondocking!! Yeaaa!!!!
    You stayed at some pretty nice private and state campgrounds the last few months, however finding a great boondocking spot is like finding buried treasure!! That one looked awesome!! Lots of room with a view!
    Did it get windy up on that hill?
    The town looked pretty neat. Nice to see that you finally got into some museums.
    The Chateau de Mores looked very well kept up.
    Some years ago I was on Long Island and got the chance to visit Teddy Roosevelt’s home and standing in his den/living room one could see his love for the outdoors and the West. He was quite the advocate for the National Parks.
    Thanks for another enjoyable video! 👍🏼👍🏽

      Thanks as always Ram! No wind to speak of, nothing of any substance only. Roosevelt was responsible for the advocacy of the early conservation movement in our country.

    Back in the old west General Custer and the 7th were assigned to North Dakota. They were sent to the Little Big Horn in southern Montana, to subdue the Sioux tribe. On arrival, General Custer sent out his scouts and upon their return asked for a report. " Well", said the head scout, " some good news and some bad news!" "Explain", ordered the General, " What's the bad news?" " Well it looks like every indian in the world is right over that hill in war paint!", "What's the good news?" "I don;t think we are going back to North Dakota"

      It's a wonderful area, SA! The National Park, to be brutally honest is only good for a day or two, plus perhaps side trips to the Elkhart Ranch and North Units. It's a good thing, then, that there's all that there is to see and do around Medora. We were there for a week and we could've stayed longer.

    Wow, it just renders you speechless. Its almost unfair that these places will never be seen by most people. Quite ironic that dakotas have names like badlands and are described as desolate.... its almost a gift then... for driving through a flat state and then bam! Its hard to convey vastness of space with a camera so i can only imagine that it was larger than eyes can see in all directions. I have that park saved in my country must see trip for a reason.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  3 роки тому +1

      It definitely belongs on that list. The amount of space is almost overwhelming. We are used to it as Utah residents, but after spending an entire summer in the Midwest, Southeast and northern Great Lakes it was somewhat unfamiliar again when we finally returned to the open spaces.

    Interesting, thanks for putting this together. The original wild horses of TRNP, thought to be descendants of Sitting Bull's horses, were removed by the Park Service 20+ years ago. Some were rescued by Leo Kuntz and taken to his ranch in Linton. He called them Nokotas. The Marquis de Mores had a role in the story of those horses.

    Good to see you back in your element of dispersed camping. When I was a youngster moving by car from Ctrl. Florida to Denver when we got into W. Kansas around midday and could see the eastern slope of the Rockies we thought we’d be in Denver before the sun set. We rolled in about ten. I imagined then I would spend my life traveling. Adulthood and my reality caught up to me as it does for most people. Your channel provides me a glimpse of the life I missed but still have time for.

I have to say you have a better grasp of what the town is about, it’s awesome for some history and also the trails around the town and park. When you say the road gets worse the further down you go, what exactly do you mean? How bad? Pot holes? Will it shake our 31 foot bumper pull a lot! I wish you would film the condition of all the roads going into the dispersed camping areas. We actually almost got stuck in Ketchum down a road you featured and there was no place to turn around! Thanks for the great videos!

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  3 роки тому

      Thanks Janet. Not enough people would appreciate the film of the drive in to make it worth doing. It's not that bad, you'd be fine with a 31-foot. It just becomes more of a double track with a couple of tightish turns, but nothing that you couldn't negotiate.

    That's some very rough ground, Marc. The last time I drove that way, back in 1999... all of the Dakota's had a very forlorn atmosphere.
    Your choice of more somber background music, fit the language of the land very well.
    I think the reason Teddy liked the area so much is because it was more or less untouched. People generally don't realize how much of North America had been deforested by the timber industry.
    They basically removed most of the trees everywhere and stripped the land of all old growth forests. Pictures from the late 1800's shows rolling hills everywhere, but with no trees anywhere.
    The east, in particular, was completely deforested. It was far more desolate to look at than these North Dakota scrub lands. So Teddy would have liked that.
    It wasn't until the timber industry and the U.S. Government started an aggressive program of reforestation, that trees started coming back again.
    People of today would not have recognized much of their country back then. They would have been astonished. This is one of the main reasons why National Forests and National Parks came into being. It was to protect the the land from these greedy timber locusts.
    Gord

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  3 роки тому +1

      Great points all, Gord. I've seen lots of photos of deforestation from that era. We had the same thing in our mountains here in Utah. The miners basically cut down everything for timber to shore up mines, and to burn. In Alta that was their undoing, for stripping the mountainsides of trees caused the entire town to be wiped out in a massive avalanche, as there were no trees left to anchor the snow pack.

    • @GrandAdventure
      @GrandAdventure  3 роки тому +1

      You could definitely get up there with two-wheel drive, Mark. Even a motorhome could get up there, they would just have to take it slow on the upper part of the road. There's also one tight turn that most vehicles could negotiate, just not the biggest ones. Those giant ones would be confined to the lower part of the road. Appreciate your kind words!
