It doesn’t have a string at all. Has implies the yoyo has a string as a part of it. They’re two separate objects rn. Like a tireless car. A car functions when the tire is connected, and therefore is a car. But when the tire is just there, where it should be, but not connected, it’s now useless.

My whole life is a lie, I have that yo-yo as a child, but I thought it was broken so I tied it LOL
You're not supposed to tie it either, you're supposed to untwist the end of the string and just place it around the bearing. Since offstring yoyos are built the same otherwise then by putting the string on it it should work like a "regular" yoyo.
I actually take the string off one of my yoyos to try offstring every once in a while

@@skateloser4088 It's an unresponsive yoyo, it works like this by design. To "yoyo" it back up, you need to perform a bind.

Why do you call this a stringless Yoyo rather than a stickless Diabolo?

It's a yoyo because there is a ball bearing and response pads inside which allow the yoyo to spin for ages with a single throw and go back to the hand when you "bind" it. This yoyo style is called 4A or "Offstring".
Diabolos don't return to the hand. YoYos do. Flare gapped yoyos have been fairly common place for more than 60 years.

Yoyos will never NOT be cool and you couldn’t convince me otherwise. They’re so simple, just a knob and a string, but there’s an endless amount of things you can do with it, and it’s so so so so very stress-relieving.

How did I never know veritasium made this video? I'm a yoyoer (Ben Conde is one of my favorites) and I love veritasium. That's awesome!
Edit: I remember when Ben Conde did his 2011 routine, he only got 4th place at worlds but his tricks were so difficult and risky, it's still one of the greatest offstring performances in yoyoing.

I had a toy back in the late 80s called a "yo-go" that was kind of like this. It had two silicone cones, a little like a butterfly yo-yo but significantly bigger, and I think it had a ratcheting bearing in the center. It was sort of a cross between a yo-yo and a diabolo. It was a lot of fun, though it took some practice. They never really caught on, though. I'm glad to see a related toy/skill set catching on.

Have you ever heard of Diabolô? It looks like a mix of yo-yo and diabolô.

First thing that came to my mind when I saw one of these. It's literally a small version of a diabolo, your fingers being the sticks.
It's an offstring (or 4A) style Yo Yo. It might's been inspired my the diabolo (Don't know about Yo Yo history) or something, but it is classified differently. That and only one side of the string is attached too something, whereas diabolo has a stick on both sides.
+ahah ihih no. The Diabolo was inspired form Chinese yoyos which were inspired by early yoyos . From that point, before the Diablo was created, the offstring yoyo was created first. So, no, it's isn't a capitalization on diabolos

It's funny how everyone loved yo-yos as a kid, then they disappeared, Diabolos appeared, disappeared and were forgotten some time after, and suddenly these new yo-yos came out, and everyone acts like it's something new, when it's literally just a small version of a Diabolo. None of them are stringless, Diabolos and these yo-yos are just detached from the string. The title is very misleading, and to be honest, I only came here to see the physics behind some brand new kind of crazy yo-yo-like invention that is actually stringless.
Diabolos are still alive and well in the juggling community.
You should try both, I play with both and I get inspiration for new tricks from yoyoing and diabolo. They are fundamentally different from each other and the way you play with them are completely polar from each other. They are very similar to each other and I see where you are going with your statement, but like a homophone, they are similar and different at the same time. Try both, so that you can experience both sides and not give an uneducated opinion on the matter.
These "new" yo-yos didn't come out suddenly. 4a yo-yos have been a thing for a while now.
Now who's fault is it that you thought an actually stringless yoyo could exist?
this is just a bit of 4a yoyoing. Me or anyone in my yo-yo club can easily do this. It's nothing impressive.
This ties in with his video on why a racket spun will rotate about another axis. Since the mass of yoyo is distributed symmetrically, impulse cannot cause rotation about another axis

This isn't all of yoyoing. There are 5 styles of yoyoing:
1A: String Tricks
These are tricks that involve the yoyo landing on string segments. The yoyo is attached to a string, and that string is connected to your finger.
2A: Dual-handed Looping
This is a style of yoyoing that involves loops, flips, stalls, Around the Worlds, and wraps, but with both hands. One of the more difficult styles, but one of the most thrilling to behold
3A: Dual-handed String Tricks
The most difficult of the 5 main styles. This is the same as 1A, but you have two yoyos instead of one. It is considered the most complicated because a lot of the tricks involve twisting the strings together in some way.
4A: Offstring
One of the easier styles. Commonly mixed up with the Diabolo. THIS IS NOT A DIABOLO. The string is not connected to the yoyo, allowing you to manipulate the yoyo in mid-air.
5A: Freehand/Counterweight
The string is connected to the yoyo, but the string is not connected to your hand. Instead,
a counterweight is used. This allows you to perform some very impressive tricks, but one of the most dangerous styles.
If you are a non-yoyoer, instead of arguing with one, please do some research on the modern yoyo. Look at some competitions. Look at some yoyo trick tutorials. You'll be amazed at how far the sport of yoyoing has come. PLEASE DO SOME RESEARCH BEFORE SAYING ANYTHING. Thank you.
