Yet another outstanding episode from my favorite Palestine podcast.
How wonderful I can hear these thoughtful and intelligent Middle East academics from my home in Texas..thx you
Makdisi brothers, interesting, but I think the guest, with respect and no judgement, was unable to respond critically to many of the questions you put forward. Which makes for a tepid not very thought provoking conversation unfortunately. Some historical info was useful, but I feel a lot is missing from examining this relationship.... especially now as we witness its detrimental impact on Palestinians. Another in depth conversation please around this issue, perhaps with a guest who has capacity to challenge the mainstream narratives and shed light on other unofficial perspectives. Love your work .
Makdisi is the best, hands down, on the Palestinian topic. Head and shoulders above all others on providing history and context. This fascinating episode is another example which intelligently explores areas I haven’t heard discussed in such depth or breadth anywhere else. So much gratitude for the light you’re shedding during these dark times.
Love the pushback 👏 great questions on what the Arab street wants as compared to the Monarchies' interests + influence by western neolibs ✊ not to mention buying weapons + tech that's created thru the monitoring and suffering of the Palestinian people
Which she did not answer at all. Disingenuous person.
Godspeed, fellas. Thank you for your work.
Really fascinating and enlightening conversation. The chasm between the populace and the rulers is big. Equally the influence (dare I say control) that the US wields over the GCC is quite evident.
Most informative. Thank you for the opportunity to gain a better understanding of the Gulf.
It would be interesting to hear from other scholars from the Gulf. While this shed some light on to the Gulf/Palestine relationship, it fell short (/timid) in some areas, particularly the ones Ussama eluded to.
Lots of food for thought here--Iran not being quite the "boogeyman" for the Gulf it once was; the Abraham Accords not likely to be as fruitful as Washington thinks, the demise of Cairo/Beirut as the locus of higher education for Gulf Arabs, the rise of the "Ministry of McKinsey." Thanks to the brothers and their producer and guest for another great show.
Your discussion is much appreciated! Regarding concern for Palestine among the Gulf elites, it seems the current atrocities, and potentially legally declared genocide, is alienating ordinary people from the state. What are the long-term effects on these societies?
This is very informative and incisive, thank you Dr Elham.
Never confuse a chapter of a book, for the whole book.
I love Makdisi bros!!!!
Thank you guyz for asking the all pertinent question about the bogeyman of political Islam & Muslim Brotherhood. Wish your guest hadn’t conveniently sidestepped it.
Excellent discussion
excellent discussion
Nice guest 🙏🏼
I think the Americans wanted to show that Israel needs a bunch of countries in order to defend it, even from something like what Iran did, which was supposedly quite small even though it looked like a huge response. Or at least that’s what the US & others keep saying that it was. They keep saying that it was unprecedentedly belligerent. So much so, that Cameron from the UK did a complete 180° when it came to his stance on Israel. He went from saying that they might be doing war crimes, to supporting them more than anyone else!
Thank you for this very interesting program. The guest mentioned her father, but was she also related to Layla Fakhro, who inspired the heroine of Sonallah Ibrahim's novel Warda?
❤
Thanks for your important work, but this wasn’t great. In many respects it was very problematic. Rather think tanky and uncritical of American imperialism and Gulf elites’ longstanding animosity towards revolutionary and popular movements in the region. Gulf elites’ hostility toward Iran is just rationalised and just taken for granted. When the reality is that these absolute monarchies are afraid of their own populations. Ussama got this very right and the push back he offers was on the money.

Gulf Arabs have always been different than the Levantine Arabs.
Yeah and also very similar in many aspects.. what's your point?v
How many times does she need to say that the gulf countries' normalization with Israel is linked to a Palestinian state?? Who is she trying to convince, us or her? They've simply sold out. Full stop.
Despite her lofty credentials, I find your guest’s analysis to be very mediocre. Totally agree with Usama, that the principal driver of changes in Gulf Arab governments’ attitude towords the Zionist entity is the US foreign policy. If it were not for the US, pushing normalization, none of the Gulf Arab countries would feel obligated to do so. Your guest totally misses that point. I get the feeling, she is trying to make excuses for the poor and self-serving decision making of rulers in her own country just to make them look good. It is ludicrous to think that these governments ever can be autonomous in their decision-making. They are drunk on their wealth and corrupt.
I mean there's no tolerance for dissident opinions even if academic or even pure facts that oppose the official narrative in these countries... so maybe she doesn't even feel safe disclosing fully
@@Hibzi_unhinged That's a reasonable assessment, but then I ask, why even bother if you cannot produce a well researched, fact based product?
Joke of a guest. "There's no indication that the Saudis will completely abandon the Palestinians". Plz invite serious people not regime mouthpieces.
