    Total lifesaver this winter. Unless I’m missing something, who needs a conventional block heater.

      Thank you for being part of the 82Maple community. I started this channel for one reason only - that being to share with my now 9 grandkids a little slice of what goes on in my life every day - but in a way that they can look back on 30 years from now and say "given what he had at his disposal, he lived his best life".
      It's evolving a bit, but that is always top of mind when I'm creating any video, and no matter what it threw at him, he was able to smile his way through it most of the time.
      Got an update coming on the Magnetic Block & Oil Pan Heaters. It's in edit mode right now. Will be posted in the next 10 days.
      Thank you for taking the time to comment. Super appreciated.

    Magnetic heaters are great. I put one on my dog’s metal water bucket in PG. kept it when we moved and then found an emergency use for it in Vancouver. Weather got unseasonably cold very early in the fall. Hadn’t winterized the boat so put it on the leg under a blanket. 60 W bulb in the engine bay and thankfully no damage!

      Soooo good. They're brand new to me - and I just love them. Apparently Coral loves them to for animal water tank heaters, so I may have to get myself some more. haha

    You can easily install a block heater in the plug to the right of the freeze plug you pointed out in this video. It’s 30mm and installs in 5 minutes, takes longer to drain and refill the coolant than to install the heater.

    You cAn also get a pad that goes onto the oil pan with silicone , they work good and you don’t have to have a flat surface to stick them on. They also come in different wattages

    I have a JD 970 35hp tractor and it's always kept in my closed up non heated barn. It doesn't have a block heater either. It has never failed to start even in sub Zero temperatures here in Eastern Washington just North of Spokane. My Ford F250 power stroke is another story....it will not start unless it has the block heater plugged in for at least 3 hours in sub Zero temperatures. It is always kept in the barn too. I did a test on the truck with just a magnetic heater on the oil pan and that didn't help at all. Happy Holidays and stay warm 🎄❄️🎄❄️

      Thanks for visiting the channel Steve!
      Yeah - I hear you on your adventures with the Ford. I've got a small trickle charger wired in under the hood. I have to plug it in, and then I had to get a bigger oil pan heater.
      Then the topper of the toppers was that with fully charged batteries I still could not get it to turn over. Not even a grunt. There is a solenoid under the hood somewhere that activates the starter mechanism, meaning I had to tarp it down, throw a propane heater under there and get it up above freezing before the solenoid did what a solenoid is supposed to do . . . Fun times. And the F350 only has 100km/65,000 miles on it.
      Same to you Steve - enjoy the holidays and do keep warm!

      The newest 6.7 PowerStroke seems easy to start cold. The 7.3 and 6.0 use HEUI injectors which can be real hard to start cold.
      You want to make sure to run a HD 0W-30 or 0W-40 oil in winter. Here in Canada I’ve seen such oils at PetroCanada and most Co-Ops

  • @franky7777
    @franky7777 9 місяців тому +2

    oops, while i have remembered, in a real emergency, you can put briquets in a aluminum turkey pan and light it up with those starter blocks, and put it under the oil pan, block the engine with plywood to block any wind

    • @howardkettner
      @howardkettner  9 місяців тому

      For sure! Good point. When logging we used to throw an army surplus parachute over a machine and put a propane torch under it - after cutting a round hole in the bottom of a five gallon steel bucket so that the bucket protected the machine from any direct open flame.

    Hey Howard do you think if you had this mounted just near the radiator it would prevent coolant slushing or freezing?

    • @howardkettner
      @howardkettner  Рік тому

      Great question - and thanks for tuning in.
      To work effectively this unit needs with the magnet attached attaching itself to a flat metal surface - i.e. the bottom of an oil pan, or the side of a hydraulic reservoir. Unless that is the case, sadly the heat just does not transmit.

      I have four - of them now, and have probably read some of the same type of comments and reviews. The ones I have are now going on three years old and I honestly have not had a moments problem.
      Not in any way disputing the issues I've read about - just saying I've had not issues.
      They have worked as advertised. For sure one needs to ensure they're mounted to a flat surface, and it probably makes sense to make sure that there is not oil or fuel on the surface where they are mounted, but so far so good.

  • @simd510
    @simd510 6 місяців тому +1

    How has it held up? Some reviews state it burns up qnd dowsnt last. Also they say it dowsnt fit flush on the pan because of the magnets and thus doesnt heat the oil pan

    • @howardkettner
      @howardkettner  6 місяців тому +1

      I used them on my John Deere 4066, 1025 and also the little '53 Ferguson. Still have the four that I purchased 3 years ago.
      For this winter however, I just went to block heaters on all units. Less hassle mounting and removing them. And, I unplugged one, and then neglected to take it off the bottom of the pan and lost it in a snowbank somewhere. After sitting in a snowbank for months, I just junked it rather than take a chance on plugging it in.
      But - my decision to go with blockheaters was not due to the effectivenss or the 'burnout' of any of the units.
      Having said that, I probably used them only 10-12 days in each of the two winters that I've owned them (winter of '21 and '22)
      I will still use them on the oil pan if the temp gets to minus 15 or 20 degrees.

    • @simd510
      @simd510 6 місяців тому

      I have a block heater which works well, but i dont think it heats up the oil and i thought itd be easier on the machine to also use the oil pan heater. Good to hear uve had no issuss with it. Some of the reviews had me concerned.

    Thank you sir. Do you use a thermostat for temperature control with this magnetic heater? Btw are you from BC ?

    • @howardkettner
      @howardkettner  Рік тому +2

      I am from BC - around the Kelowna area. I've got four of these - one on my sawmill hydraulic tank two that I use on a John Deere 4066 (one on the pan and one on the block) and one spare.
      The unit says it's thermostatically controlled - but only so that it doesn't go beyond 250 degrees Fahrenheit. However, at best, unless it's attached to something really small, it seems to only increase the heat of oil/water by about 20 degrees - which is perfect for me. Makes a start at minus 20 Celsius seem like a start at 0 Celsius on the 4066.
      Folks have expressed concerns about leaving them plugged in overnight - and I find generally that two or three hours at most is all I need to attach and plug it in.
      Hope this helps.

    • @howardkettner
      @howardkettner  2 роки тому +11

      Wow! You just raised a terrific point and one that I'd missed in my video. I had noticed that these heaters have a thermostat that cuts out at 250 degrees Farenheit, so if it's below freezing I'll slap that on the oil pan for 3 hours max. Definitely would not want it on longer than that.
      Again, I should have mentioned that part in my video.
