I find myself south of Edinburgh with time on my hands and end up walking back to the 15th century!

- After dropping off my van for its service and MOT, I was stuck south of Edinburgh with little idea of what to do for a few hours. Then I remembered I was pretty close to one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture anywhere in the UK, a very famous place I'd never been to before! So join me as I set off in search of Rosslyn Chapel where there's a big treat in store when I'm invited back after hours to explore it all on my own! (Filming at the chapel is not normally permitted, so this was my chance to get a rare glimpse inside captured on camera for you to see exclusively here on my UA-cam channel) :)

Filmed on location at Rosslyn Chapel on Thursday 20th January 2022.
Special thanks to Ian for inviting me back to film inside after hours.

Well, Steve, you’ve excelled yourself with this one. Thank you so much for getting permission to film. You have given a lot of disabled people access to somewhere that is not accessible to us. Amazing. Truly breathtaking. Thank you so much 😊🇬🇧
I just can't get over this video I love that you got permission to film inside and be on your own made the video much betterness
It really was a privilege! :)
The architecture inside Roslin Chapel is absolutely stunning. I've never seen anything as nice.
And the outside too. I was last there 17 years ago and it was enveloped by scaffolding, and i'm slightly shocked by how beautiful the exterior is.
I was saddened to hear that William the cat has passed. I remember seeing him lying on a pew cushion and looking up at us as if to say “Welcome to my home....but don’t bother me. I’m napping in the sunshine.” Rosslyn Chapel is a special place. It feels warm and caring. I want to go back. Thank you for letting me see it again.
Thanks Cynthia, and by the way, what a life William had :)
Great video Steve. You always make your narrative so intetesting.Thank you.
Very Nice Indeed.
Special Touch remembering William.
I have a family connection with the chapel. My Grandfather was the guide back in the 1960's and he was presented to the Queen when she visited. Our family often visited the chapel, including for the midnight service on Christmas Eve, which was very special - all this long before it became famous.
A midnight Christmas church service in Rosslyn Chapel sounds absolutely magical. What a luscious family memory to have and hold.
Hi Steve, only you could turn a day getting van serviced into a brilliant day out full of relevant information, great video as always plus another place to visit.
Cheers Brian! :)
What a spectacular Chapel truly ornate its almost camp gothic. Lucky you..and us for seeing this.
Haha so true Michael!
This chapel is such a beautiful and unique building. What an inspiration to fill in a "spare" day with a visit, and what a coup to be able to film inside during the hours of darkness, which served to concentrate even more the atmosphere of this amazing place. Rosslyn has fascinated me since i first read about it many years ago as a then little-known location in one of Ian Rankin's "Rebus" novels. Later there was a TV programme in which the Countess described the extensive and complex restoration work that the chapel was then undergoing.
This was before it gained worldwide fame through the "Da Vinci Code". A colleague at work, having been totally taken in by it, lent me the book to read during a boring night shift, but apart from anything else, I lost credibility in the story when it reached London, and I was unable to believe the hero's unfeasible ability to dash about between locations, catch taxis, etc. in the nick of time: It felt as if these chapters were written using an A-Z street guide, rather than from actual experience of the constant traffic gridlock which slows the average speed of most journeys in the city to little more than walking pace!
I hope that your van passed its MOT, and we'll be treated to more of your fascinating adventures around the beauties of Scotland in the coming year!.
Thanks Hugh! It was a great day with a find like this and the van sailing through the MOT :)
One of your best films! Thanks.
What a wonderful video about the Rosslyn Chapel. Thank you Steve for sharing.
What an amazing chance you had to film inside. Thanks for bringing us along! 🎉 At one point, I will have to re-watch all of your videos from Scotland and compile a list of all the places I need to visit during my next trip…
Thank you for the tour❤
What kind of MAGIC to see this at night! Are you a warlock man? lol! Who can do this? Amazed! Blessed to see it this way. Thank you so very much. Appreciated. Much love and thanks for the share...kust beautiful.
Absolutely stunning and so incredibly well presented. Wee robin capture ❤
Thanks so much Janine :)
Why is nobody asking the important question? No, not the Holy Grail, did your van pass? 😁
Would love to see more of East Lothian, especially North Berwick Law and Bass Rock 👍🏼
What I was thinking too actually!
My van did me proud! Made it an even BETTER day when I got the call from the garage :)
Heartbroken to learn about William’s passing. I spent a few minutes with him when I visited. I was missing my cats. Rosslyn is one of my favorite places in Scotland. It’s so beautiful and intricate. ❤️🏴
Susan, he had such a wonderful, long life there :) But I was so sad never to have met him!
Susan - As did I when I visited. He was inside the chapel on a pew cushion and just soaking in the attention he received. He was a bit of a purring machine and seemed to animate the chapel's visit for me. Godspeed Mr. William. // Dia luath Mr. Uilleam.
That was a treat and a half, with a bit of change on top 🙂
Thanks Rob!
What a nice surprise. You can take me along on Journeys like that any old time you want. I don't know you well enough to know whether you would like the book or the movie but I did. Normally I'm more of a shooting, car chase movie type person but this one I really enjoyed so thank you again for taking us with you and thank whoever gave filming permission. Rosslyn Chapel is absolutely amazing. The tribute to the Rosslyn Chapel cat, William, at the end actually brought tears to my eyes. Yes, I am a cat person. Give Alicja a hello for me. Be well, stay safe, love from Texas.
William really did have the best life :) I'll be sure to watch the movie soon now!
Thank you Steve it was a privilege to join you in the Rosslyn Chapel; I love authentic History
Cheers Derek - the privilege is all mine :)
Nice shout out to Robert Burns on his Birthday! I hear 25th of January is a celebrated day in Scotland. I'm recalling when I was in community college, art appreciation class, there was a few weeks of study on older building architecture. Specific topics of knowing what particular shapes, curves, points were used in which era. Very amazing how the builders were able to create such detail so long ago and still standing proud. That sure is nice countryside. Cool clean air. Thanks for sharing, very nice video. Couple other shout outs to Robert Burns in the other comments. Cool!
Cheers Frank! You have some great knowledge there!
A real pleasure to join you on this one 👍👍
Thanks so much :)
This was certainly a totally unexpected treat! Thanks, Steve. The chapel is both smaller yet more impressive than I expected. The amount of skilled workmanship in gothic buildings is mind boggling.
It really is Heather! And to be allowed to capture it on film was such a bonus!
What a stunning building
I had looked at filming Rosslyn Chapel once, but when I saw online photography wasn't permitted, that scuppered that idea. You're the man with the contacts and the charm to have doors opened. Another excellent video.
Haha cheers Scott! I couldn't believe it when they said yes! I need to ask more, normally I shy away from it!
Omg pure amazing
Thanks to the interest generated by Dan Brown's book, The Da Vinci Code, you were able to record a much improved Roslyn Chapel. The substantial improvements included the lighting, no doubt. Your invitation for a night tour was certainly a tour de force. Another excellent video, Steve!
Thanks so much Leon! I was so privileged to get the invitation to film after hours :)
So good that the film led to better upkeep of the chapel. Another Tom Hanks project, From the Earth to the Moon, funded some Apollo era hardware restorations including a Lunar Module that would have been the cancelled Apollo 19.
Great video Steve. Those marks on the stones in the crypt are probably mason's marks. Each stonemason had his own individual mark that he used on the stones that he carved or dressed so that he was paid by piece.
Thanks so much for the info Lydia! I hadn't even considered that!
A highly spiritual place my partner and I visited in 2003 when it was being restored. There was a false roof over the whole building supported on scaffold and visitors were welcome to climb the scaffold up to the gutter line, so we saw the outside in detail, and the inside including the crypt. We took a heap of photos, all on film; and visited the rudimentary visitors centre to see plans for the future visitors centre shown here.
Apparently the restoration, including the false roof, was in progress during the period THAT BOOK was written, but there is no mention of it in the book.
I cannot recommend a visit to Rosslyn Chapel highly enough, it was a highlight of our visit to Scotland and ranked with Skara Brae on Orkney.
Totally agree! Love both those places :)
Thank you so much for an up close and personal tour of the beautiful chapel. I have seen the movie however I will have to watch again it has been a while. Beautiful cat laying in the sun ❤️🤗
This was such a cool opportunity, loved it and need to watch the movie again too!
Scotland's secret spiritual centre. Well done Steve!
Thanks so much John - special place for sure!
Absolutely breath taking....I'm blown away that you got permission to film! I will be seeing this for myself in just a few days!! Can't wait!!
What a beautiful chapel! I love your videos, they are always interesting and I hope I can visit some of the places some day. Greetings from Germany
Therese - thanks so much! Really appreciate it!
I was an extra in the The DaVinci Code. Pretty much precisely where you are at 9:08 is where Hanks was sitting alone in between scenes. I went across to where he was and shook his hand and had a chat with him.
That is so cool!!!!! Love that guy :)
the most sacred and beautiful spot on Scotlands landscape. I visited here in 2018 and i'll never forget the feeling i got. Its absolutely stunningly poignant
Great way to waste a day away Steve. I went many years ago and got some pretty good pictures. Wee bit of history the St. Clairs (later Sinclairs) had a long history in Scotland, with roots in the Orkney Islands and Norway. One William St. Clair fought at the Battle of Hastings alongside his cousin, William the Conqueror, and later gained the barony of Rosslyn from King Malcolm Canmore of Scotland. Another William St. Clair was one of the lords assigned to bring Robert the Bruce's heart to the Holy Land, but he was killed in Spain en route.
The William St. Clair who built Rosslyn Chapel had grandiose plans. He intended to create the Collegiate Chapel of St. Matthew, the centerpiece of an educational institution. He founded the town of Rosslyn (now Roslin) to house his workers, hired master masons at a salary of £40 a year and oversaw the creation of a beautiful gothic building with a profusion of carving. Work on the chapel continued for nearly 40 years.
Amazing place and no need to read any D.Brown books the facts are better than the fiction 🙏👍
Absolutely fantastic Robert!!! I learn so much in the comments section :)
@@steve-marsh welcome mate always enjoy your videos 👍 popping into Edinburgh for work next week might try a few steps see if I can fit in 2022 😂🙏
That was very very good, Steve. And you caught the area & Chapel on a lovely day with such good natural lighting effects. Your historical facts were interesting. And you did indeed work your magic by managing to take a video inside that gem of a building. It's a very long time since I visited there; the visitor centre wasn't built at that time. I remember feeling as though I had stepped into a little part of France; I felt that before entering the Chapel. I did enjoy your visit very much. Thanks for that.
Cheers Robert! You are spot on with your comment about France by the way!
Great stuff Steve ,been watching your travels a while now always fantastic, strange I was just in the chapel car park this morning while my partner was at the dentist😂 I live in the next village of Rosewell, many tracks and trails around here you might enjoy and your subscribers keep up the good work, look forward to your next trip 👍
Ha small world indeed! Be sure to say hi if our paths cross :)
A great video Steve. You're a pro!
Thanks so much Henk :)
What an absolute treat very very interesting thank you for taking us along 🥰🥰🥰
Thanks Steve for another beautiful and emotive video. Keep 'em coming
Cheers John, really appreciate it :)
The earliest stain glass windows in Britain are around 7th cent. The marks on the wall were mason marks
The circles with the flower pattern inside are called witch marks and are meant to keep them away. They are found in many old buildings, sometimes carved onto wooden items like doors. window frames or box-beds.
Thanks so much for the info!
Thanks Steve, now I'm going to have to watch the DaVinci Code again. Hope the van was OK.
Cheers Kev! I need to watch it too! Van did well made me proud :)
Fantastic video, congratulations that you got permission to film inside.
Cheers Graeme! I was so privileged to get that after hours access, was desperate to do it justice!
Awesome, humbling and inspiring.
Cheers Philip!
The strange marks on the crypt walls are Stonemasons marks, Master Stonemasons had their own marks which they inscribed onto the blocks they carved, like a stamp or "signature."
And RIP beautiful William xxx
Oh cheers for the info! And I was so sad I never got to meet William!
Before the modern visitor centre and shop was built I found myself walking around Roslyn on my own and down in the crypt . I felt nothing but peace and serenity very moving experience .
That would have been wonderful!
Thanks for taking us on another of your fab journeys Steve …. 🕍🏛
Glad you enjoyed it Poppy, thank you!
One of your absolute best Steve! I really enjoyed this one! What a privilege you had on this day!
What a privilege to film inside this iconic place and especially at night... it really is worth going a long way to see.
Totally Tom! I was honoured :)
Wow, Steve what a find, that stunning Rosslyn family Chapel was absolutely beautiful and the architecture was just amazing, it was as if you had time traveled back through the Legendary Standing Stones at Craigh na Dun, as Claire did in the romantic series ‘Outlander’ to meet her destiny Jamie Fraser a dashing Scottish highland warrior, what a privilege to be allowed to film inside that magnificent building, it must have felt a wee bit eerie being all alone, you always go that extra mile and come up trumps for your followers Steve, thank you 🙏 for this unexpected treat “👌”
Haha yes Bernice! :) Oh and I couldn't believe it when they said yes to my filming request, and even more so when they left me ALL ALONE in there! Wonderful place :)
@@steve-marsh That must be one of your best video’s Steve, I was rooted to the spot when you were left alone at night, my knees were knocking, I was literally looking in every corner and trying to take everything in, not sure what I expected to see 👻 but you were so calm and collected! I was inspired that night to watch ‘’ The DaVinci Code” again after many years, when Tom Hanks and his Co-star actually started walking down that Path or Bridge was it, it was unreal, like action replay, what a phenomenal actor he is! looking forward to the next adventure from our own Fearless Scottish Highland Warrior “👌” no pressure then! 🥴
Cracker of a video, mate! Only you could turn taking a vehicle for its MOT into dive into history.
Haha cheers! I was so glad to be able to find somewhere on a day that's normally written off!
An extremely entertaining and informative video. Congratulations on being invited into Rosslyn Chapel after dark and receiving permission to photograph. God bless William the Cat!
Thanks Stephen :) It was a real privilege indeed! Was so sad about William, but what a life he had :)
Visited the Chapel at the beginning of December on one of the night visits it was really interesting and very atmospheric and had a great guide to tell us all about it. To top it all came out and the snow was falling. Some great photos in and out. (You are allowed to photograph on night visits.
Wow that would have been spectacular!
Thanks, Steve. What a wondrous place! I too heard the story about the mason's apprentice.
As always, interesting and full of history but Scotland is definitely historical. I look forward to your videos and thank you for sharing.
Thanks Doris :)
Catching up with some of your older videos. Big mistake my wife and I made when we were at Rosslyn Chapel many years ago - the outside was covered in scaffolding and it was on a Sunday - no tours, but we could have attended services. We chose not to attend services are we are not locals - turns out there were very few people attending services and we would have been welcome. Live and learn - we didn't want to intrude, but instead, we could have been part of the community. Hope your van passed MOT.
Wow that was lovely. I just thought 'OMG that guy must have been SO rich' to have that built! I've read the da Vinci book, can't remember the film must watch it again! Awesome walk Steve thanks for that
What a fantastic place. I envy you being able to go around it on your own
That was a beautiful wee chapel indeed! The gothic era ones are truly oustanding in the lightness their design suggests. Living near Cologne, I have a superb example of that near my place, only the Cologne cathedral turned all murky with the dirty soot laden air here.
Again a great video! 🤗
Thanks so much, would you recommend Cologne? I love Germany but seriously need to visit more places!
@@steve-marsh Well, there are some must-sees there. The Cologne Cathedral is a stunning piece of architecture and a mind blowing beauty. Yes, you really _must_ come and see it! They do guided tours which I heard are pretty fascinating. As the history of this cathedral's construction spanned from 1237 until the late nineteenth century, there are a lot of stories to tell. One of the towers is accessible for visitors and provides a smashing view over Cologne and the surroundings, you must not miss this, too.
Smack bang next to it is the "Römisch-Germanisches Landesmuseum", the Roman-Germanian museum, which is a must see as well, a stunning collection of Roman and ancient native artefacts.
The Altstadt, Cologne's "Old Town" (Built after Cologne had been levelled in WWII) is a nice area for having a beer and a good bite to eat for pretty much touristy prices. The nice thing with Cologne is that all these sites are within easy walking distance, even if you are handicapped. Flying in via Cologne airport, you take one of several trains connecting the airport to the central station, and when you exit it towards the city centre, you basically are at the foot of the cathedral. If you follow the street between central station and cathedral to the right there, you arrive at the Gaffel brewery, in my opinion the only really tasty choice of Cologne's own traditional beers, the Kölsch beer. They do brilliant local dishes as well, and all for decent prices. Immediately behind the cathedral you find the museum and to the left of the cathedral there is a passage to the old town. Maybe five minutes of walking or so.
The Cologne Zoo is nice, but, well, a zoo. I haven't been there in over twenty years as the entrance fee is just bonkers. From the zoo, a gondola rope car crosses river Rhine. May be nice for some pictures of the city from above and as a funfair ride. I haven't been on it yet.
If you are into playing any instruments, the Cologne Music Store is a must see Especially their guitar department. Bring *lots* of money! At the former airport of Cologne, Butzweiler Hof, a car museum was opened which I was told is pretty nice, but I haven't been there myself yet.
A Gestapo prison has been preserved as museum. A reminder of the worst of Germany's history and deeply depressing place. Noteworthy place, but not at all fun. Not for the faint hearted.
Fans of historic weapons will like the Zeughaus Museum, where centuries of weapons development are displayed. Not exactly a big museum, but surely interesting for some.
A touristy visitor should avoid the Cologne Carnival. If you are not into seeing the kind of party that inspired the Mallorcans to wish to get rid of tourists, Cologne Carnival isn't your thing. It deteriorated a lot in the recent decades, has become a boozefest of sorts with all the nasty side effects.
All in all and except for its gems, Cologne looks like the hurriedly built city it is. As over 92% of the buildings were destroyed in WWII (Swallow that, whiny single-raid Dresdnerian pussies! 😝) the majority of the city is early post war style and not exactly charming.
There's a lot of night life if you don't happen to have a fatal plague roaming the planet, but it's nothing you don't find elsewhere. As Cologne is Germany's gay capital, gays will find lots of clubs and bars and enjoy Cologne's annual Christopher Street Day parade. This is not just a pride-do for gays, they welcome everybody. A very different kind of carvnival in summer, but worth seeing. Partly better fun than the carnival, and less risk of sexual assault for women.
You can get the most interesting bits of Cologne seen in a day. I live some 20 kilometres south of Cologne in Troisdorf, and I don't even go there for shopping, this is how uninteresting I find the rest of the city. I actually haven't been there in 3 years and only went there for work back then.
A reason to book a hotel might be to hop on a train on the second day and pop over to Bonn, which I personally like much better. There's Beethoven's birth house, the central building of the University of Bonn, the Rheinisches Landesmuseum with a long term exhibition about the Neanderthalians, a nice city centre with good places to have a bite to eat. At the end of the Poppelsdorfer Allee, basically a stretched bit of park, you have the botanic garden at the Poppelsdorfer Schloss. They have a nice collection of exotic plants.
The University's central building at the other end of Poppelsdorfer Allee is where Konrad Röntgen discovered X-rays and among others Karl Marx studied.
Line 66 of the tram crosses river Rhine and takes you to Königswinter in a 20 minutes drive or so. There you can walk up mount… erm, hill Drachenfels . There's a very touristically exploited castle ruin on top, which is said to have been the castle of Nibelung Saga's Siegfried. Half way up there's a wee zoo, a nice stop. Haven't been there in ages, no idea what they have on display there nowadays.
From Either Cologne or Bonn, you can join river tours on passenger boats. A nicely lazy way of passing a day and seeing the nicest bits of the Rhine valley. My parents took me on such a trip when I still was in primary school age, I have no idea what the prices for these tours are nowadays. To get a feeling for the region, this may be a nice way of travelling and just having a good look at the landscape.
Outside the towns and cities, the Rhineland and Eifel landscapes are pretty beautiful, a nice region for bicycle tours and hiking. The odd bits of medieval towns survived here and there, some really nice towns. Many of the old buildings fell victim to the war, though.
Bad Münstereifel and Monschau would be towns to visit. In normal times they are real little gems but they won't be appealing to tourists for another year or two, last July 2021's flood has stricken them pretty badly. They yet have to recover.
…and that's all I can think of for now, really! 🤔🤗
Thanks Steve. Great to see inside again. Last time I was there the visitors’ centre was undreamt of…. [1970something]
Changed days indeed! Glad to see it generates plenty money now to keep it beautiful :)
Steve, what a wonderful treat! Seeing the outside of chapel in daylight and then the inside at twilight through your eyes was such a welcome surprise.
Thanks as always for stoking my travel dreams.
Glad you enjoyed it! Such a privilege to be allowed to film there :)
How lovely you were able to film in here Steve. We've been, it's so beautiful. Poor William. I was wondering all through if you would see him 😿 Hope the van passed!
I was inspired to visit this after seeing the Davici Code with Tom Hanks , they laid on a really good tour
Wow, I 've been going back to your older videos (3 yrs and more), you really made a great transition in 2022 in your photography and narration/storytelling. Great work. Wishing you luck and prosperity.
Such an amazing and privileged video - thank you for showing us inside the chapel. I would love to take images on my camera in this sort of light. It looks so wonderful.
So true Dave, I wish I'd known and would've packed the better camera! :)
Hi Steve i had not seen this video before and it is outstanding. How to make an incredible video by just leaving your van to have its MOT. You have a knack for great story telling ATB
Really enjoyed this interesting video,
How amazing that you were allowed to film inside the chapel! Thanks for sharing. It is such a wonderful spot with great tours. I loved visiting there.
It was such a privilege! Thanks for watching :)
What a treat!
Steve, that is a beautiful church. Had to be absolutely awesome to have the place to yourself. Like you mentioned, the history of the place, amazing. Thanks so much for sharing. I loved being able to walk around it with you. Absolutely beautiful.
I am a huge history fan and I know Scotland has a lot of it! One of my favorite recent videos! (However I still need to watch your museum video sometime this week haha )
edit: would have been spectacular to find that vault! Haha
Ha so true I couldn't stop thinking about it down there under my feet! Cheers Reese :)
I'm flabbergasted .... that was one very special, special treat. What a treat for you and thank you for sharing this time you took in your life to share with us. I feel quite humbled and would love to return to Scotland one day. Cheers from NZ
Nice to see that you got a Toyota van. The most reliable cars in the universe...I have a Yaris Cross 23 😎🚕
Thanks a million Steve. It was an amazing and educational video as usual.
I loved the that you had the whole chapel to yourself and an opportunity for me to see it all the way from California. Looking forward for more videos from beautiful Scotland presented by you.
Thanks so much, glad you liked it :) Aw the best to you in the Golden State :)
I watched this video today, Burns day, what a great Video. Rosslyn is such an iconic place. Thanks Steve!!
Cheers for including my video in your Burns Night mate!
Love the video as always
Glad you enjoyed William!
Visited in 2021 on a very hot day with a fair few folk milling about, then a big group arrived as we were going out, we were thankful to get the opportunity to see the place not too packed, but wow how lucky were you, at night and to yourself. It was so much to take in. My neck was hurting from looking up! Bought some things in the shop including a book about William the cat and had a lovely coffee. Thanks for the video.
So glad you had the chance to visit! Yeah, I was proper honoured to be given the privilege of an after hours peek, and was amazed to be left all alone in such a fantastic place!
Beautiful lighting inside. Thank you Steve
Thanks John! If I'd known I'd have brought a better camera to capture it!
Brilliant, Fantastic video Steve. please carry on your good job, we just love it
That was really a fantastic video. The wee chapel is absolutely beautiful in the evening light. I love the stories of old historical buildings and the touch of mysticism that surrounds them. A great magic that allowed you to film inside the chapel or was it your charm? I hope you had a proper haggis with neeps and tatties in honour of Robbie Burns today. You really deserve it. Slainte.
Thanks so much, haha charm???? :D And yes, I sure did ;)
Still catching up on videos this is a cracker Steve .....another place on my to visit list ...😊😊😊
Another cracking video Steve. You may remember me Robbie P from Oxford telling you about my up and coming trip on the Caledonian sleeper trip from Inverness to London on the 15th of February this year in memory of my dad. Unfortunately BA have cancelled my flight to Inverness and they don’t seem to be flying there anymore. So instead and to be honest this is a better trip I will be flying to Edinburgh instead having a few hours in Edinburgh then heading up to Inverness on the train in the afternoon. So I can get to see the lovely highlands of Scotland. Before my trip back to London. So if you fancy a lunchtime pint or two on me and of course Alicja is more than welcome to. Your videos have really inspired me to do this trip so thank you. Take care both
Cheers Robbie! Not long now, hope you're looking forward to the trip! What time will you be in Edinburgh? Unfortunately I think I may struggle with work, but worth checking!
@@steve-marsh Hi Steve my flight should arrive at Edinburgh at 10.35 then hope on a tram so I am hoping for around about 11.30 my train departs Waverley round 1.20 so it’s a quick visit no worries about the work we all have to do it
@@steve-marsh I have arrived in Edinburgh and it’s very sunny at the moment. I got some grate photos from the plane on approach to Edinburgh of some small we island I recognised from your videos. Also a lot of steps. Looking forward to the the rest of the journey now
What a beautiful, beautiful place! I love how the lighting in the Chapel brought out all the detail of the stonework inside. Thank you for this, Steve!
Thanks Sue! If I'd been more prepared for this I'd take a better camera, but it was a stunning place!
What a fabulous tour!
That was a superb tour.
Thanks so much!
Fascinating place, terrific video !
Brilliant video very atmospheric 👍 thanks Steve
Cheers James!
What an incredible video, I've enjoyed every second specially the final part when you can film inside the chapel. I'm in love with Scotland and videos like this make me desire even more to come back some day. Thanks for sharing!
You are ever so welcome :)
Awesome, Steve, just awesome. I am so happy you did this on Robbie Burns night. Merry Ann from Minnesota
So glad you came along :)
What a treat been past there loads of times over the years next time i will definitely be calling in thanks for sharing another great video
Cheers Jim, I was always the same!
This may be your most stunning video. Well shot, spontaneous, very well edited. Thank you I will pass this link on to some friends also. Your ability to make the most of waiting time is amazing.
Amazing.
Thanks so much Steve. Again a very touching and emotional VLOG. You are hereby assigned the title of “Master of the Hidden Gems”
Norman! Thank you!!!!! :)
Very interesting, Steve. Hoping to get over to Scotland for my 80th birthday in May and this will definitely be on our list of places to visit. You referenced Burns again; we couldn’t find any haggis here in Belize, but we did have a lovely dram of Macallan Quest single malt to toast the bard.
When you come here you won’t be disappointed. I hope you get here and have a great time.
Best wishes to you and all the best for the 80th trip!
Loved the vlog! Something special and eerie about being on your own! How about a visit to Gilmerton Cove, they say it could be linked to the chapel.
Oh! Thanks for the info :)
Jeez Steve, What splendour for one Family! The intricasy of the carvings is just something else. Cromwell using it to stable the horses! Why does that not surprise me??
Hah yes so true :D It really was spectacular, and so glad I was allowed to capture it on film :)
Thanks for visiting Roslin Chapel. We stopped on our trip last year and found it beautiful also.❤
I've read the book, and seen the movie so was really excited to see Roslin chapel...and what a totally enchanting place it is. I'm a huge fan of Gothic churches and this one is truly beautiful...great video.
Incredible place and the folks that run it were so accommodating to my filming request :)
Late commenting here, but wanted to endorse Rosslyn Chapel as on our travel list for next time in Scotland. My uncle was there several years ago, and when he heard we were going to Scotland in 2019 he said "promise me you'll visit Rosslyn Chapel!" after he had been there and was completely taken with it. We didn't manage to get to the Chapel on that trip, but next time we will - and your timely video further confirms it is a "can't miss" for next time. Thanks!
So glad to keep it on the radar for you Brent :) I'd say it's on the 'must visit' list, even if like me your knowledge of the history of the place is a bit sketchy, it will still blow you away!
