- Pilot Vlog 160. A flight in the Cessna 208 Caravan From the Spirit of St. Louis airport to the Tampa International Airport. I answer questions as I'm flying the Caravan and show the pilots cockpit view of the takeoff and landing. I also talk about my favorite airplane and the ATC radio conversations are in this video.

I can see it in your face that you're progressively enjoying the creation of your flight videos. To you it's like having a group of people (your viewers) with you on sometimes lonely flights. Us viewers are fortunate to be able to watch the adventures of Captmoonbeam. All very entertaining and learning experiences for us.
Thanks Philip. I do enjoy making the videos. I love flying and sharing the experience. I guess it's true, do what you love and you'll never have to work a day in your life.
Part 23 certification requires stall speed of 61 knots or less in landing configuration for single engine aircraft. The 208 stalls at 64 knots with condition lever in low idle and 61 knots in high idle in the landing configuration. The high idle along with vortex generators on the Fowler flaps necessitated all that for certification.
Excellent video - thank you. As a fellow former commercial pilot, I really appreciate your read backs, as it is obvious you have a) been alert and paid attention, and b) you read them back in a clear, comprehensive, and professional manner. It was good to hear ATC also appreciate your read back, as they obviously value this. I see so many recordings of hurried, incorrect, incomprehensible pilot communications to ATC which really make me cringe, and to be honest, it gets my "goat up"! I wish more people would adhere to the original "Aviate, Navigate, Communicate" school of thought, and realise that although ATC are busy, read backs are not a "speed test", and ATC would prefer you get it right and correct, rather than just read it back the quickest. Keep up the professional flying ...... really enjoy your channel. Best wishes from the UK.
Thanks. Every student pilot should learn that.
Just saw this vid for the first time. Love the Caravan! Miss it! Had the pleasure of flying it In Iraq and Afghanistan for the AF.
Enjoyed this video of the Cessna Caravan flight and answers to the questions asked. That's one beautiful airplane, I got to ride in one island hopping in Belize a few years ago.
thanks Tim. Ours just came back up from Florida. I'll be doing some Caravan videos now.
Hey there Jim! I missed a few video’s as well--busy, busy, with store! It’s too bad you couldn’t stay a day in Tampa to enjoy some warmer weather for a second before heading back. Thanks for sharing some great info, even on the plane! Much appreciated and the video’s definitely motivate me to continue my passion in aviation!
thanks Ron.
Great video Jim! Mississippi river looked amazing! Great insight too! Thanks for all you do!
Thanks Tom.
My viewers keep asking me if it is you they hear on the radio in the Caravan on my video. Since I have no idea I figured I would ask you myself LOL. It was a flight into FXE.
Hi Baron Pilot. It was the Caravan I fly but, that was the owner flying it. I used to fly the Baron early in my aviation career and loved it. Great airplane. I really liked the shot from the tail looking forward under the airplane, very cool. Enjoyed the video also. Fair skies
Awesome video ! Neat seeing you close to home. Hope all is well. ☀️🏝👨🏼✈️🛩
Hi Dennis. yes all is.
Cheers for asking my question
thanks for asking Alex
I flew in the 80’s and early 90’s in 172, Archer II and got to fly some in left seat in Citation 500 so, I love the Glass panels in Caravans & M2 and agree with your assessment of those two planes being more fun to fly. Great vlog explaining plane functions and operations!
Thanks Gary.
Really enjoying your videos. Keep up the good work!
I wanted to also mention how much I enjoy your videos. Put together really well.
Great video mate!
Watching your video's from Adelaide, Australia.
Flying the Caravan in FS2020 and I must say it's an amazing aircraft and a true work horse of the industry.
Great video as always captain . Fantastic you had the time to have a chat and talk about the aircraft.
thanks.
Really enjoyed this one skipper.
One of your better videos, good work
thanks Allen.
Another Great Video, Jim, Keep them coming. I hope you don't get the flu from that SW flight home. I had it earlier this year. NO fun.
Fred
I Fred. I'm good this evening so I think I made it.
Scaravan, in ice, such a jem
Best video so far....keep’em coming!
thanks.
Excellent Vlog! Good job on answering the questions and nice flight video. Keep up the good work!
thanks Tom.
Cap' I really enjoyed this, "ride-along" video! I felt like I was right there with you, super cool! I do have a suggestion for your next video; I'd like to see your feet working the rudder pedals... Maybe you can get a second go pro...
Thanks Bossa. I'll have to think on that one.
Heard you on frequency today (2-2-18) at Salina,KS. I landed behind you and was taxing out as you were rotating. If you were filming/recording ATC listen for “Lakes Air 25”, that was me. 👨🏻✈️😎
I remember hearing you. I had my go pro up but, accidentally double clicked the REC button. No video.
Bummer. I wanted to run over and introduce myself but as it turned out we both had super quick turns. Next time!
Arthur wall “Lakes Air” that brings back memories, got my start there, it was good flying and terrible pay
Nick TheAV8R much hasn’t changed since then 😂. Enjoying my time here though.
Arthur wall Lakes is probably why I still tend to hand fly to FL180. I have flown with people who throw the autopilot on at wheels up (it seems) and I never understood it
Your always upbeat and professional .
thanks.
As always a great video, and you answer my question of why send the 208 to Florida.
Thanks Mr. Hope to knock out some more questions in the future.
Great vlog captain, really enjoyed the content!
Thanks and You're welcome.
I fly the 172 ( still getting my PPL) but i want to get my seaplane rating and get a Caravan with floats! Love the channel man
Thanks Steve. I think a van on floats would lots of fun in the islands.
Great flight thanks for bringing us along cheers paul
Thanks for watching Paul.
You got to use the east\west runway at TPA - nice. At 17:27 you can kind of see where I sometimes work.
Thanks, fly safe!
thanks Samuel, you be safe out there also
one of your best videos yet, great work! couple points: 1. lol at getting cleared to CYT for a 600+nm leg, did that catch you off guard? 2. re: mike, so you don't have to be typed as a copilot, even if you're the pilot flying? is the pilot not flying PIC then? 3. do you still fly the king air? love the KA, a vlog would be amazing
Being below most of the IFR traffic I was expecting that. I'm always PIC in the Citation XLS but, I'm only the flying pilot every other leg. It's been about four years since I last flew the King Air
I also fly a van. Nice time builder.
Hi Rock, are you flying freight?
Enjoy your videos what a fun fantastic job
thanks Josh.
Pretty long trip. Nice conditions... sweet landing.
Excellent set of answers Jim - so good to understand more of what you do and why.
Another enjoyable video trip with you. Hope you avoid the flu - I had it and it's nasty!
Hi Chris. Sorry to hear it got you this year but, happy you're getting over it.
Just excellent, thank you for teach and show all, I love cessna Caravan.
thanks Mario.
World best selling airplane! Happy new year 2018 captain and always good luck to you.
thanks.
Mikes seems so good in the xls I would easily guessed he is typed in that jet
He's one of those guys that's good at everything he flies.
Another great video, thanks. Made for a long day eh?
it did but it's always worth it.
Another awesome video Capt, once again love all the info & the camera view @ 16.06, stay safe & well : )
thanks and you be safe also.
Thanks for the ride Jim. It's always a pleasure. I live in your area. You're a true inspiration for those thinking of becoming a pilot and for those who haven't flown in awhile. Do you do any flight instruction? You have a unique pleasant personality that would put any student at ease. Keep doing what you're doing. You're good at it. I know it's rough, but you can do it. :-)
Thanks Sky. I just renewed my CFI two days ago but, the only instructing I've done over the past 25 years has been in turbojets for type rides or 135 checks. If you see me around town say hi.
This was a great video Capt. Probably my favorite of yours so far. As a non-pilot av-geek the more you explain things, the more I like it. What is the range of that Caravan? And where does Capt. Moonbeam come from? Sorry if you've answered that before and I missed it, but it's something I've always wondered about. Thanks again for sharing these videos with us, and as always, I'm looking forward to the next one.
Hi Tom. It has approximately a 1,000 nm range. The channel was originally my daughter and I singing Christmas carols for family. Over time it inadvertently morphed into something else but, the name was set.
If you want some great Cuban food really close to the FBOs in Tampa try La Teresita. The food at the mall is overrated.
thanks for the tip
Great video! Really enjoyed all of the background info on Mike and really like you pointing out the gauges. Do the Controllers ever ask you if they will be part of one of your videos?
No. But some have said HI.
Pirep Perfection.
Thanks.
Another great video and there is no reason for you to say you’re sorry. Keep up the good work and stay Flying.
Thanks Ralph.
Tell us about when you flew the King Air. I love the King Air.
You mentioned hoping to make it non stop, I'm guessing so you don't have to come down to go to the bathroom, does that caravan have a bathroom or toilet? if it does can you put the plane in auto pilot and go sit on the toilet if it was a emergency, if you the only one on the plane, that would be something else..
Fuel wasn't an issue. I was only planning on stopping for a possible potty break. Autopilots are nice but, I've had way too many fail to trust one like that. It's also against the regs. I would just land.
My limit is 2.5 hrs... take a gateraide bottle with you?
I had a plastic bottle just in case.
My favorite plane of all time, the Boeing 707. I have a massive amount of hours logged in that one. If memory serves me correctly, it’s approx 1.5. Not 15k, not even 1.5k. Just 1.5 hrs. But it’s there in my log book.
Guess my second favorite would be the G-V. Lots of time in that one. 6K I believe.
Without a doubt I’d get a flu shot, can’t risk getting sick.
I don't have time in either aircraft but I think they would be a lot of fun to fly.
@captmoonbeam What glasses are you using? Awesome video!
wow...again a great vid!...thanks 4 splaining single pilot regs....coughing and hacking..!! ha ha yes..wife and i just flew home to socal from visiting new orleans and that was prevalent on our flight too!! wish i had started following you years ago...can't wait for your new vids!!
Thanks Bruce.
Nice flight....def long in a Van!
4.6 hours is my mas in the Van.
Great video. Thanks.
flying first class, NICE
Only the best in this flight department.
Nice vlog. Can i ask about your glasses?! I see you mostly fly with dark glasses, are they prescription? But landing in Tampa you had clear glasses. Do you switch or are they light reactive lenses ? Any advice on a decent lens system for flying? I guess I am about the same age as you and I fly with progressive lenses with flip-up clip-ons, but they can be a PITA! Thanks
Thanks. The sunglasses are prescription and I just switch one pair for the other. They are a PITA but, I started wearing glasses late in life so I don't see myself ever using contact lenses and I can't think of anything better. I don't have light reactive, probably should have done that. But, don't buy polarized lenses. They'll make instruments polarized glass covers disappear.
Great video, as always.
My burning question: When you're running multi-hours in any of the platforms you operate, can you (do you) leave the cockpit to use the facilities, as needed?
If not, what is your mitigation strategy?
In Single pilot airplanes no. I hold off on coffee that morning and reduce my fluid intake. For a long flight like this I'll take a disposable relief bottle with me. For anything more serious I just land at a nearby general aviation airport.
Thanks for the video! I love the Caravan for its simplicity. Q: Do owners upgrade their engines for power/time or is mostly for sky diving companies? Do you really need 900 hp? I see a lot of HP upgrades but wondering for what reason? Always fun to watch..KWVI
I can't imagine the owners doing that. For their purposes it's just not necessary.
Cap' did you have to leave a key with the front desk for the Caravan or do each of you have your own key? Or does the plane actually need a key to start..? :) Thanks a Trillion and counting!
I think the last time I flew an airplane that had a key for start was a Cessna 152 in the early 90's
I look at used plane ads often. Doesn't the Caravan have a Pilot Relief Tube?? After all you were by yourself. Or am I completely wrong as to what that actually is?????
this is the only one I've flown so I can't say if others have it but, ours doesn't.
We always travel with a good dollop of "Vicks" up each nostril. Can't smell much except menthol but that's better than the flu!! Wife's brother in law is a doctor and that's what he does. 😃👍
Hope you make it through the season without getting it.
are you allowed to fly a full plane of pass with just one pilot ?
Did you like the Cuban Sandwich?? That’s good
Very good.
Excellent video, as always. I have a couple questions. I am an ultralight pilot and many of us are not on radio. Do you actually look for ultralights while in E/G airspace? Also, do you get an engine out anxiety when flying single engine aircraft?
Yes, we're looking for any aircraft that could be a collision threat and I'm not anxious about flying a single engine aircraft, especially one powered by a PT-6.
How do pilots remember all the data your given to repeat. Do you sometimes have to write it down?
We write down longer clearances but, a big part of it is knowing what the controller is going to say before he says it. When he gave me a reroute to ENDID intersection I was already familiar with it from previous trips and knew how to spell it.
What happened to the mustang? Love that jet. Will have it some day
the owner sold the Mustang and bought an M2
Darn was hoping for more mustang video. Could you show a complete preflight and start up of the M2 someday ?
How do you go to the bathroom, no one else to pilot the plane.
I don't. I stopped drinking fluids hours before the flight and planned on stopping if I needed too.
Are you required to wear a uniform at any time and if so, under what circumstance?
Not with what I'm doing now.
Hello Captain, if someone has a degree of color deficiency, is it deterrent to the job like yours pls?
As a pilot single land, complex and commercial glider pilot, I really enjoyed this video. Do more of this type of content for the XL and M2 if your able. Thanks
Thanks Thom. I can occasionally do it in the M2 but, probably not in the XLS.
Why is the Caravan you Favorite Airplane?
Easy to fly, great visibility and just a fun airplane.
Probably the flu! You crack me up Cap.
Do your owners watch your videos?
No but, some of their family members do.
O.k. so if we don't get a video for the next say 3 weeks you'll be grounded with the flu..? I'll pray that you don't...:)
If I get the flu I might be uploading some older videos.
The last 10 seconds of your narration .... I'm thinking where's your mask...then I see this is 2 years old.
One of the best VLOG's you have ever put out, thanks Captain
thanks Bill.
Yes, it is!!!
Sponsored by subway..eat fresh and fly a caravan! Those were the days.. I miss the caravan
You keep topping yourself with each new video. I think you might be able to turn these into Pay Per View events! Thanks for the exceptional experience.
Thanks Je.
New subscriber....Im hooked. Im looking for another pilot job and I think Ive found my new airplane to fly...keep up the good material.
You’d love a Dassault Falcon. I’ve flown a lot of airplanes including the 737NG, C560 and 680, and the Falcon 2000 is a finger tip airplane.
Love the videos! I've been watching your videos since before I started my private and now I'm working on my commercial multi. Thank you for being such a great inspiration.
Thanks Kyler, Good luck with that commercial multi
When I grow up, I want to be you!!!! Very cool
Be you and be better than me. 😎
Love the videos, thanks. Quick question: At what point after landing do you switch back to low idle? Thanks.
Love your Videos. Originals. Nothing FAKE!! That's what Matter
Caravan-Best ever. Unless you keep it in the ice.....(with the old pneumatic boots).
Amazing Video. Two questions. First one is if the Caravan is a EX or a Legacy Caravan. Second is that in the scene that you were showing the light panel, the Nav light was switched in the off position. I that normal in Cruse flight for the Nav light to be off?
Thanks for all the explanations Jim. Love your channel!
Thanks Brian.
On one of your future post, please explain the difference of Indicate Airspeed and True Airspeed. Is there any significance in the difference in speed spreads?
We just care about the food, not the flying. LOL...kidding,another great vid from a great guy! It would make for a fantastic vid if you would contact Greg Mink at his Premier 1 Driver channel and team up for a flight. Thanks Capt for your hard work on the vids.
Thanks David. I was thinking about starting a Captmoonbeam food channel.
Captfoodbeam
What happens if you’re flying single and you have to use the washroom?
Nice video, greetings from the Netherlands , ( crew ph-hms)
Thank you for allowing me to enjoy a vicarious experience through your excellent videos. As an inactive aviator this has become my go-to.
Thanks for watching.
Thanks Jim, and very informative. Love arm chair flying with ya :)
thanks Bob.
would be nice to see a video that goes in detail on the startup of the 208
Really enjoyed this one, thank you for having us along for the ride. Hope you survived all the germs! Best wishes from Leicestershire, UK.
Thanks for watching
I grew up near float planes in Quebec - my great uncle owned the local "airport" ... two large hangers with fuel service. I love the Grand Caravan. In doing work in Belize, I still remember landing in soccer fields adjoining local schools, or flying along the coast through a fog embankment. Easy peezey. I lived in Victoria, BC, and I thought I would have seen more Grand Caravans. I did see a good deal of De Havailand Beaver's and flew on them, but I never flew on a GC. Nice video!
Thank you capt’n for the Q&A session!; great video too!.
thanks Hector.
Really enjoy your videos.
One question I have. On the glass cockpit display it shows the runway. Is this the actual runway or just a digital representation?
It's a synthetic vision representation and should be in the same position and alignment. I'm always a little impressed when I see the numbers on the display in about the same position through the windshield.
Sweet, safety, and professional landing😍
Awesome video. OK forgive the naive question but in what world does it make sense to fly your Caravan empty 4.5 hours just to “reposition “ - and then spend $ to fly you back via a commercial airline flight? I assume you are also getting some minimum hourly amount for your time. How does this work financially?
I'm on salary so there's no additional expense there. The airline ticket was $147 and meals totaled $25. The airplane had to go to Tampa where it will be based for several months.
Thanks Jim. One of the best video's yet. Great explanations of your instruments and thanks for answering many of the viewers questions. Look forward to more your videos.
thanks Rick
Doesn't it suck when the TAF says "overcast 2k" and then its clear skies and you're like YAY! But then literally 30mins later a like super thick layer rolls in!?@!
that was a disappointment, but it did clear up for the flight.
