Been over 30 years since I stepped foot on Houston soil. Brought back some memories seeing the downtown!
That's a long time. Bet it's changed a lot.
You both made a great decision to leave at 1:00 and ATC is your best part of your day to keep you both out of the thunderstorms to a successful safe flight like always
With the high volume of traffic and thunderstorms moving through the area, ATC does a great job.
I'm so delighted to have found your Channel! This Eternal Pax always turns right! Now, I want to turn left when getting on board! ...following FlightChops, Steve-O, Mentour, Captain Joe "he stole the Concorde" hahaha & ag tractor's P&W beast... but now I know what I want to fly. Not the SR22. I grew up at Houston Hobby as a kid! ...ready to get my wings now. Thank you so very very much sir! Love this jet!
thank. It's a lot more fun to sit up front isn't it.
The guy in the Pilatus landing at KSUS sounded familiar.
32C? yes indeed he did
David de Pingre y
This is really cool I love it when people blog their flight and stay in a major city👍
Thanks Kid.
Thoroughly enjoyed!✈
thanks.
I would suggest you go into EFD in Houston and stay away from Hobby. EFD has Signature, rental cars and not much traffic. Just be aware it is a military tower so overhead approaches, and military jets are based there. "check wheels down" on every clearance to land.
Hi Byron. Sometimes I choose the airport, sometimes they do. In this case it was their choice.
Pretty view and smooth air at FL410.
Thanks.
Jim thanks for taking us with you. I really like the cloud shots you got in this video they amaze me how much different they look on the tops of them and bottoms. Fly safe my friend. Have a great day. God Bless!!!
Thanks I think the light hits them differently while your flying.
Good to see you work for your money! Great video!
Sometimes you have to make it look like you really work.
Great Video. Loved the way you blended in the music. Brought back memories. Glad to be retired.
Thanks Art.
Great time lapse footage. Also not sure what I enjoy more, the flying or the places you eat at.
Thanks Dee Man
No 3.. Always great to see a new video on this Channel
thanks Ronaldo.
I was driving thru that weather in Houston. No Bueno!! :)
I agree.
I love your videos I’ve been wanting to get my pilots license for a while now just haven’t had the time.
Don't wait, if you're young(er) and you get started now, there's a pilot shortage that is only going to get worse before it gets better. You could be on your way to an aviation career.
Gary is right.
I’m 58 and working on commercial now... got to be some space for wanna be flight instructors.
Oh my gosh! I might've seen you take off/land from Hobby. Picked up a job for the summer. Keep up the good videos Capt. :)
thanks.
Fantastic, as always, Lord Fairheart.......;-)
thank you kindly Mike.
Good afternoon Cap'n
Good to see you stopped by Roger.
One of your best recorded approaches, intense and awesome !! loved it
thanks Clark
IFR Clearance is filed as planned and I'm ready to go
No 1..
We have a winner.
Trump 2020 ZZZZZZZZZZZ
Is that Wilson Air Center?
Yes, That's where we pulled into.
captmoonbeam I know someone who works there.
I thought I heard Mike's voice on the ATC...!?
AND Jonathan eats lots of Jonathan apples,,,golden and red
delicious ALSO;
👋🏻KSRQ☀️🏝🇺🇸👨🏼✈️🛩⛈💦☔️
Hi Dennis
I know you have a format to your videos and they are interesting but I wish there was more to the flying process. I suspect you are catering to a wider audience. Thanks.
Thanks Paul. One day people will get tired of seeing Citations and I'll have to do something new.
Houston Memories! Born and raised there. Got my private @ HOU 1975 while in college at UofH ... many trips in and out of HOU dodging the weather! FUN!
When I worked at Universal Weather at Hobby I used to eat at that Pappas all the time. There’s better around but it’s not bad.
So many better places for bbq in Houston , Try Killens next time you are in town my friend.
Excellent ATC From you Both and I love the way you both backup each other during the takeoff to climb cruise to landing and I would fly with you anytime especially in the Citation
thanks.
You guys seem like you’re eating all the time! You should only eat one meal a day and you’d eventually save jet fuel..
I think that there were only 2 cloud formations I did not witness.
Clouds and not too much Cholesterol.
7:54 Did they provide you with a certificate of authenticity? 9:38 Call the hotel shuttle to take you to the car.
Another great video.
I had to laugh about getting impaled by a static wick. No, I didn’t, but the radome of the Bac 1-11 I was flying did. Fresh paint job and all. One of those round, black, hard carbon style. Nice clean puncture, clear all the way though. That was a tough one to explain to the boss. Hangar rash.
Funny side story to that. We had to get a loaner radome so we could fly and when we were unpacking it what came walking out, a scorpion. The radome came from Texas so it came along for the ride.
That's scary. I was in a maintenance facility in Texas and had to go. When I lifted the seat, the was a scorpion sitting on it.
Great cloud shots! You guys see some pretty amazing scenery as pilots. Learned some more things in the beginning, too - never knew about the landing gear & brake air pressure, nor that there was an anti-skid fault display outside of the cockpit, nor that static wicks will impale you, either. 😁 Honestly I didn't know what they even were - your comment prompted a quick Google search. I'm always learning! I appreciate you sharing all of it with us!
Thanks Smitty. i love the never stop learning attitude.
@@captmoonbeam Everyday is a new experience and you never stop learning.
Let's fly and let's get something to eat is what I hear most!
Thumbs up for the great looking chow! Oh, and the flying and scenery were great, too. :-)
Thanks.
It's unfortunate that you guys had to land at Houston Hobby. I live in Kemah which is a good ways away from Hobby but I know the area well and it's not a pleasant neighborhood to say the least. I do recall the rainy weather we had. I believe it was from a tropical storm down in Mexico.
the only negative we saw was that the traffic was terrible.
I grew up in the Hobby Airport flight path (SoHo), enjoyed the planes but don't miss a damn thing about that part of Houston.
Thanks Kenneth.
I use to stay in that Marriott, across the way, when I was at Mesa.
It's very interesting seeing your 'local' evaluation of weather systems either directly in the way or dotted about very closely to points of departure or arrival. Like a limited 'cross section' interfering with your journey!
thanks.
Interesting that the gas & brake pneumatic bottle temps isn't displayed in both Fahrenheit & Celsius - another great video!
Thanks Sean
O.k. here's probably a dumb question, what is "Vishi" :)
the Vichy VOR is a navaid we were filed to.
The single dislike should be forced to walk into the static diffuser.. Why would anyone dislike this?
I look at is as an inventive to improve.
Hi Capt. , at 0:49 in the video, a red light appears under the switch, what does that signify? Thanks, O
the APU oil level is to low to safely operate the APU
Great production, Jim. Was Mike "cheating" on you again?
No. He was on a family trip yo Illinois. Or at least that's what he told me...
The material of the window are modified so that the horizon is seen with curvature or like as eye fish.Very bad by Citation.
Hi Raul, thanks for watching.
Very nice, love the weather shots. Sure sounded like someone we know landing at Saint Louis.
Thanks Ron.
Nice. Was N32C who I think it was--sorry I did not read all replies
Don't know. I don't recognize that one.
Word For The Day(s) - Umbrella. Was that the Latitude at 11:31?
I think it may have been.
Really enjoyed the informative video..Got many a night in that Marriott.
Thanks John. It was a good place to stay.
...another overnight with GREAT food!
Hi Bill.
I see you made sure the drain valve was closed in this video. I hope your wife got a laugh out of this one.
She didn't laugh but she did like it.
may i ask you what is exactly your job because i try to understand without success
I'm a pilot but, I fly more than one airplane and occasionally fly for other companies.
Houston! My old stomping grounds! Sure do miss Pappas :D
I love all the Pappas. We went to the seafood Pappas that night.
"All the big parts are still there." Is it wrong that I got a chuckle out of that?
I like your sense of humor.
What airline/Airlines did mike fly for before he flew for your owner
American.
Damn, Jim. If I knew you were in town I would have invited you to grab lunch somewhere. Would have been great meeting you in person.
Thanks Sheldon. Maybe next time. I get out to Houston several times a year. We usually fly into Sugar land though.,
Even better! I am closer to SGR. ;) See you next time!
Southeast Texas sure does get its fair share of thunderstorms!!!
some pretty big ones too.
scott. drove me crazy saying "two que" when your taught to say the phonetic alph. "Two Quebec"
I would say you are correct
haha. safe flying
what is that verticle wheel we saw moving momentarily.
That's the trim wheel for the horizontal stabilizer. I was reseting it for takeoff.
Watching some Peter McKinnon on your off time! Gonna get a 1DX to shoot some buttery b roll? 😉
I feel like i need to improve and that's one way to start.
I 100% know what you mean. A lot of YT'ers out there keep saying the best way to improve is to keep grinding away at it, accept that your work isn't necessarily perfect but that it's good enough, but always try and make your work better, perhaps even more perfect, than the previous.
On your first take off thought I heard a call out for APU off. Do you leave in on for all flights?
No, but if it's hot we'll leave it on longer for better cooling then shut it down after takeoff.
Thanks for the reply!
Yell next time, give you a NASA tour
Thanks Buck.
Great Video Jim you earned your money on that trip.
Thanks Barry.
Whats the benefit with T/O with the APU on?
It's normally operating as we set up the cockpit. After engine start we leave it on for taxi and takeoff because with the engines operating at idle it provides another source of bleed air for cockpit and cabin cooling. We normally shut it down after takeoff. At that point the engines are providing more than enough bleed air.
Another good one Jim. This year so far seems to have been very heavy on thunder storms across many areas. Your views of thunder heads from the air are as always most fascinating.
That was some nasty rain landing at Houston... saw all that on radar - whole S coast of TX hit pretty hard for ages. Even MO has had plenty of bad conditions in recent days. Clouds looked pretty ''perky'' as you approached Spirit.
Take care and stay safe.
Hi Chris. I'm in Atlanta today and when I left st Louis it was raining. When I got here, it was raining.
What does that wire from the tail to the plane do?
It's the antenna for the HF radio.
I love this guy. You rock!
thanks Lenny.
Time to upgrade to the Latitude!!
I'm all for that.
I *hate* WilsonAir. MillionAir at Hobby is much better.
Mike in the Pilatus?
No, he was on a family trip to somewhere in Illinois.
You guys eat so well.....
yes we do.
Thanks for all of your videos. They are great and I really enjoy watching. Thanks again.
Thanks Collin.
Fly safe...
thanks.
you are welcome....
An other great video.
Good flights captain.
Crikey that was some weather!!
Love how relaxed and chirpy sounding Scott is on the radio! "2Q" - No Quebec to HOU departures.
On the walk around at start has 2Q got LED anti-collision / strobe + beacon lights??
Another great vid Captain
I don't think so.
Great video! I found your channel recently from somebody’s recommended channels- so glad I did! You really get some stunning views as a pilot... Keep it up!
Thanks for stopping by.
I’ve been watching your channel for about a year now, I’m a big fan! Appreciate you taking the time to bring us along in your videos, and they keep improving with B role, music, ATC, etc. I currently work for a large 135 operation flying a Bell 407 in the Gulf of Mexico for oil and gas. I change out crews on multiple oil platforms, and take specialists to the larger ones 150 miles offshore so they can take measurements. I stared watching your channel when I began considering switching to fixed wing. I was curious what a day in fixed wing pilot is like, and you have made me well informed. I enjoy the views from the higher altitudes you fly at, the clouds are always unique on every flight. I’ve also learned a bit about IFR, and ATC from you as well.
I’m strongly considering taking an offer from a regional carrier. They will pay for all my training, and give me a healthy bonus to make the switch. I’m excited to begin learning a entirely different environment. What do you think about this opportunity?
Thanks again for your invaluable experiences you share.
Hi Chris. I appreciate your watching. It's a great way to get a lot of fixed wing multi hours quickly. It's also so a good stepping stone to larger aircraft and the major airlines.
5:45 AM ? I never get up at that time but I HAVE gone home that early . . . but that was back around 1962. It feels good being retired but I'm now too old to get my pilot's license. So I watch YOUR videos. Thank you, Captain.
thanks Nemo.
Weather? That was just Houston and Gulf Coast normal. I did my IFR training there. I did many more actuals than practice IFR approaches. The thermal convection would put you in some unusual attitudes occasionally. What fun is weather!
Weather definitely makes it interesting.
Good morning Jim. I remember those squall lines coming through as we got several inches of rain from them. Next time you are ever in Houston, message me on Patreon and I'll take you out for a bite.
Thanks Chris. I appreciate that. That trip was non-stop rain. I had to fly home to dry out.
Great fun facts as always, thanks for sharing. Had to watch it a few times to catch it all. @1:30 the APU emergency shutoff button seems kind of small. Guess the scifi fan in me expects all emergency shutoffs to be epic sized handles of some sort. But I guess it just shuts off the APU, does not deploy some kind of extinguishing agent, that's probably automatic as needed I guess, because there was complete absence of epic sized handles in there.
@8:10 Man that was a nice hotel room. Usable desk, comfy couch with foot rest, awesome sized TV, the only thing I would add is a recliner but I've never seen a hotel room with a recliner. @9:40 I never stayed at a CourtYard Marriot but I will next time !
@8:20 Liking your B-Roll and more importantly the... I guess you call it flow where, from the viewers perspective, the video flows so smoothly it feels like it was just a few minutes long then he or she realizes it was 18 and change. Nice !
thanks for watching and especially the kind comment.
Wow, lots of storms just like in St.Louis today! Very cool cloud layer's... Had a question Capt. what would happen if you forgot to shut down the APU & it ran the whole flight?
It's rated to 30,000' We cruise at 40,000. It doesn't say in the book but, if you went high enough, it would eventually flame out or since it's air cooled shut down due to a high temp indication.
Thank you for posting. As a retired mil pilot who lost medical, your vids put me back in the cockpit again. There is not a single day (even hour) that goes by that I don't miss it. My consolation was the amazing career I had! Cheers and blue side up! :-)
Thanks SD. You're not alone. I think anyone whose made a life of flying has a hard time hanging up his wings.
Nice work watching the master of B-roll.
Your cloud sequence was nicely done
thanks Nick.
Let your SIC know that he's got a Great Captain to fly with
Great video.
thanks Paul.
Jim, at 1:15, is that the engine outlet and diffuser? Landing at Spirit, I thought 22C sounded an awful lot like Mike! :p Must have missed him on this video.
Nature, pure beauty and pure danger mixed together.
Thanks for taking us along, as always.
thanks Gary. Yes it is, reduces noise.
Always hoping to hear you on frequency Jim. Still no luck yet. Keep those vids coming.
One day and will do.
Cool landing in HOUSTON with the rain moving in. Thanks for another great one Jim! Love the high altitude pics.
Thanks Brian.
Great video! Thanks for taking us along! I had to chuckle when I saw you watching the Peter McKinnon video because I watched the same one a couple of weeks ago. Safe landings!
Thanks. Always trying to improve.
very good!
Thank You.
Good video!
thanks David.
You must have came in when we had that tropical depression two weeks ago, btw good choice on Pappas BBQ, great place :)
Yes we did and I love all the Pappas restaurants. We had dinner at the Pappas seafood the night before.
One of my hometown airports! (bush intercontinental being the other!) hope you enjoyed Houston besides the storms! Lol
I did. It's always fun.
O for the love of GOD send some of that nice rain my way here in Grand Junction CO !!! LOL Love the vids!!! keep it up!!
thanks. You guys are dry out there.
It’s nice to see you at Wilson, next time you’re in let me know and I will give you good breakfast, lunch and dinner suggestions!
thanks Bill.
Man, that was a great recovery by your partner going into the Pappa's BBQ restaurant on that slippery floor. Helluva save!
I thought he was going to hit hard.
Yep, it’s either raining or a sauna here in Houston. Saw you land as I was picking someone up from the airport.
What are the chances of that.
