This video is incorrect. I got the chain off the cam on my 2007 525 RFS. You need to remove the water pump impeller, then remove both cam sprocket bolts, then both cam bearings. This can all be done with hand tools, the bearings are NOT press fitted on! Once the bearings are off and the cam sprocket is as low as possible, you can just barely slide the cam chain off. Maybe if you have a new chain that isn't stretched it won't work. But it worked for me with 10k miles on the chain.
Hmm, officially they also say to break the chain. How you remove the bearings without lifting the camshaft? And you cannot lift it much, because the chain holds it in place. I can try whatever you say now, as I have engine disassembled atm.
You actually can take the camshaft off without breaking the chain. I manage to take off the waterpump wheel, and the bearing behind and remove the camshaft. But if you are changing the piston, top, cylinder, etc…. You have to break the chain, cause its placed in 2 different channels through the top and the engine block
Just try it instead of looking for all the theoretical reasons why something won't work. It's a very negative approach! You definately can, just unbolt the cog from the shaft and it'll drop down far enough to jump the chain around.
remove water pump impeller and the bearings come right off they are not a pressed bearing infact there is a locking washer that holds the second wearing in it just lifts out of the groove this video is so miss informed i almost bought a new chain link and a press tool so i could replace my auto decompression gear ........ thank god i did more research had it apart and back together in 30 min
Is it possible to replace the cam chain without removing the cylinder? my thought is to break the chain, and fish a new one through as I remove the old one. I don't want to remove the cylinder though. Has anyone ever done this?
No you can't. The automatic decompression assembly prevents the cam wheel from coming off. You would need to pull the bearing, then the de comp might come off. Easier to cut thr chain
@@Trumplican I'm going to check the service manual and see what ktm thinks, because I really don't know and I just did a tear down on one of these engines, and the cam chain definitely needed to be cut.
joe, thanks i didn't think even doing that would work but i will give it a try next time. jeff, how do you take the cam bearings off when they are pressed on to the shaft?
Boy's love toys.. those who think that chain needs to be cut to remove it are wrong..it is easy and simple to remove cam and set timing chain without cutting a chain...
Joe is right 100 procent. same i did without watching the video. just rotated the camshaft and i saw that the decompression arm had a gutter and which the gear could drop.
Would you happen to know where I can find a master link for the cam chain? I have a 525 Polaris outlaw 2007, and having a hard time finding a master link for the cam chain so I can change the gaskets
no such thing as a master link for a cam chain. They are riveted together all the way around. The cam has to be removed from the head before the head can come off. watch a video on your specific motor or get a service manual that will tell you the step by step
@@clayboi6939 on these engines there is. Well its the same as the rest of the links but it comes with the plates and two pins and has to be pressed on and the pins have to be peened on the ends. But without getting technical he is asking a valid question because you do need a new link when you reassemble these engines because you have to either cut a cam chain link or press one apart to remove the cylinder head.
your wrong my friend. you can easily take the camshaft with gear off and adjust the timing without cutting. only the chain cant come out of the the engine and cylinder and head.
You are correct this engine is crazy

you have to take the bearing off behind the aluminium seal housing. just did it on my bike tonight
Yep, I echo the same advice for a 03-07 KTM 525 EXC

Yeah I seen someone ask how do you take the top off with the motor in my chain broke and need to take it apart.
How did you get the cam cover off while it’s on the frame?
Loosen the cam cover, then first take out the cam rockers otherwise the cover wont fit out of the frame

Keith Collins attach the new chain the the old chain with wire and just pull the new one on
you can unbolt the sprocket and get enough slack to roll the chain around the sprocket

@@QuantumMotorWorks hmm i wonder how i managed it then??? Maybe I'm a magician.
@@Trumplican you could be, unless your cam chain was so blown out, maybe you didn't have to.....🙂
@@QuantumMotorWorks i've done it with multiple of these engines its really not that hard you just loosen up the cam chain tensioner

With a puller.

In the comments; some empathic no's, some empathic yes's.
'cover me Scotty; I'm going in'.
Your video is wrong as far as taking cam off. But right on as far as taking the head off. The chain has to be broken. Now way around it. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
take off cam bearing cam will come out thank before you talk!
