    For calculation of weld strength in transverse fillet weld we need to consider shear stress of the weld material.

    But in steel code book it is written while calculating the design strength of weld, effective length of weld should be in consideration but not overall length.
    That is effective length of weld = length of weld - 2x size of weld.
    But sir why have you taken length of weld instead of effective length?
    Why are you not following the steel code book IS 800: 2007 page no. 78-80

    due to shear stress, transverse fillet weld can fail,not due to tensile stress.pls correct it otherwise many students can confuse

    • @bhaskararaogondela3805
      @bhaskararaogondela3805 6 років тому +1

      I think you are confused it is due to both shear as well as tensile stresses and weld will fail by shear in parallel fillet welding

    I think for other weld shown below we should consider the compressive stress not tensile stress

    • @ridewithvalentine96
      @ridewithvalentine96 2 роки тому

      No, for weld, shear strength is considered.
      That is permissible tensile strength can be covert to permissible shear strength just dividing it by underroot 3

      Usually tack bolt is taken into consideration while designing buy not tack weld. 🙏🏻

  • @badtensioner
    @badtensioner 6 років тому

    My experience is a bit different. The weld that I put as a fillet eats into the metal parts and not only put something on top like your illustration. This means the weld must be shown having eaten into the metal parts.
    My next experience is that after welding, it is super hot. When the parts cool down, the upper right part rises because of the pull of the weld when it cools down. The pressure P therefore is not going to the right or left respective to the parts, but rather, the parts are pulled towards the weld as it cools.
    The whole explanation, therefore, does not make any sense at all.

      If you want to know how much load a fillet welded joint can withstand, u can make use of this equation.
      P is not pressure it is the external load that can be applied on to these plates.

      This is the reason tensile strength is converted to shear strength by dividing it by √3
