As someone who has had an 18lb pike on an 3-14g rod. I can confirm that its not for big pike but big pike more than often wont say no to small lures if the opportunity presents itself😅😅 Guaranteed you will struggle but if you manage to land it, It will be an experience that you'll remember for years to come until you snag an even bigger one on the same gear.
Ive a shed full of crap lures, rods and reels..good to hear im not the only one that gets it wrong sometimes.when I began fishing I didnt realise it would all get so complicated, technical and ADDICTIVE..still great fun though.! Again great video and advice. Thanks
duff600 Yep, I have plenty. lol. I think i've still got most of it too, still can't part with the lures! lol Problem for us there is/was so much crap out there to be bought we are always going to get a duff product at some point. This surge in lure popularity can only be good for us with the tackle that should now come our way.
Thanks for watching! Give it a go matey. Don't need too much gear. Can even fish light lures on your float rod or whatever and if you like it then look for a more suitable rod.
Enjoyed that.Deadbaited for 20+ years and sometimes got a big S style plug wet.Recently started drop shotting.Time is against me these days so lures are the answer for me for short sessions.I had no idea there was such a variety and the size of the larger lures surprises me.My pb fell to a sprat!
Hedge hog Wait until you hook a twenty on your DS rod! lol. A few of the lads I fish with have had a twenty on the tiny shads, but if targeting pike we scale up. Not always the really big lures but during winter we do. There are some pikers who use even bigger than I do. Big pike love a big meal. You can't beat lures for short sessions. If you know a few spots, just call in on them when you can. Little and often is the way I mostly fish. At least if it's a blank it wasn't a full day blank. lol Glad you liked it mate.
Thank you , really enjoyed the video , and your honesty about the different type of rods and your preferences, I've watched quite a few videos , to try and make sure I buy the correct set up for me , and yours was the best by far , thank you again for sharing your knowledge, it certainly a big help to me , .....cheers.....frank
Great to hear that it's help. Group your lures in to sizes, then pick a rod with the same casting weight and don't look at too many rods or you just end up confusing yourself. Good luck, I hope you make the right choice. :)
Hahaha , ........about 25 years ago I started out with a 9 foot DAM telescopic rod 10-40 grams casting weight , equipped with a fixed spool and 12 lbs monofilament ! Using spinners , plastic shads and spoons , it caught me heaps of pike back then , but admittably not the most big ones . After that first "lure" rod , I got into using 2 piece 9 foot seatrout rods sporting casting weights of up to 45 or 50 grams , these were my universal lure rods for years , used up 3 or 4 through the years , still equipped with fixed spool reels , but using braided line . I never liked using shorter spinning rods , since I focus on further casting , .....and if I would not have used these rods from my little boat as well , I might have even gone for 10 or 11 foot seatrout rods(though 9 footers surely are still too long for a boat , most likely fishing from the bank , though) At some point I also got into multiplier reels , so nowadays I could also present a similar rod selection , as you did in this video . I've figured out , that you talk a lot about lure weights in relation to the particular rod's rated casting weights , ........in my opinion that's just one aspect , .....one also would have to take into consideration , that certain lure models , in particular deep diving crankbaits and big bladed spinners ,do generate a lot of drag , which might already arch a softer rod quite a bit just on a retrieve, so not much more power reserve left for a hookset ,........even though,if the rated casting weight matches the weight of those lures . Regarding fixed spool reels , my suggestion for the beginner would be , not to go for those cheapo reels from the sales bin , also do not go after 12 +ball bearings and stuff , .....look for a reel with a thick and solid bail connected with a rigid bail spring , the bail should snap close quite solid but naturally the bail must not close accidentally on a cast either . Also very important for a lure fishing fixed spool is a 100% perfect winding of the line , so look for reels sporting so-called "worm shaft drives" or "worm shaft gears". Imperfectly spooled line would sooner or later lead into bird's nests wound around the rod guides and cause loss of lures and line , .......such happens in particular, when working lures in a twitching and jerking manner , only reels with a 100% perfect wind can handle this problem , others can only be used with lures which are steadily retrieved ,....so it's better to lay a bit more money for a reel . Just mean to tell,.....I've learned the hard way ,........greetings , Dieter
61diemai Loads of great advice there mate. Yes we all have started off with a poor set up, gone through loads of problems until eventually we end up where we are now. Thing is everyone comes to their own conclusions and prefer one thing to the other. That's the hard part when trying to cover these things, there's so much to take in to account but you can never account for personal preference. Some people will get lucky and buy the right thing first off and others will struggle before eventually finding out what suits them. Serious lure fishing over here is only a small market but fast growing right now. Many people don't know the things you have found out over years of fishing, and I bet you are still learning now. Hopefully people will read the comments and your input too as it will be a great help.
I find practice makes perfect , practice casting at a target in the garden with an old lure with no hook , this is how I mastered my low profile Citica multiplier .
My favourite rod at the moment is a fladen xtra flexx 10-30g for I think 30 quid. And it's a belting little rod I fish the Lancaster canal at the Preston end. Iv had small perch to mid double pikes I can't fault it at all. It's sensitive enough to feel the small hits and got enough bollocks to get the big crocs in. The rod was designed for crash diving cod/coal fish so it gives a beautiful bend, almost in half a few times which is Shit scary even tho the manufacturer says it unbreakable because its made from basalt fiber. But only time will tell. Top vid mate as always.
rossefc1 I've had a few cheap rods and you can get some right belters for cheap enough prices these days. I bought a mate one for £22 and he loves it, where some people are turning their nose up because they think just cos it's cheap it's crap. So long as it's right for the individual that's what matters. There's no one lure rod for all and opinion is key. Me and Ady fish on a weekend together, same lures same styles and we have totally different gear.
Thanks for the tips, turns out there is a lot I didn't know, my set up seems to be light weight, I have two light set ups which will probably struggle with a bigger pike.
Hi mate, glad the tips were useful. It all depends what you want from your fishing. You can buy even more set ups than I own for all sorts of situations. Boat jigging for zander over 60ft of water needs another set up, drop shotting isn't covered and neither is a proper trout lure outfit. You can often make do for the odd time but if your fishing involves a lot of one thing you need to get suited to it. Everyone has to tailor their own stuff and the more you fish the more you find out what is right for you. If you are catching the odd pike and mostly they are smaller then the light gear is right for you. If you watch some of my proper piking videos, that's pretty much what I do mostly as I'm pike driven. If you want to chase the bigger pike more often then you do need a bigger set up.
I want a heavier set up too I think, but struggling to find a 6ft ish rod with a casting weight of 120g + found a savage gear one, want to find a shop really so I can go handle the rod, not one for buying rods over the net.. Need to get a feel for them.
Gas Junkies Cheers mate. Took me hours to do, you wouldn't believe the work that goes in to these things. Actually I haven't the patience, I'd have gone fishing if it took that long. Had it done by a pro who did a great job for me. I love it, and glad others do to. FigCreative if you ever need anything doing.
Accuracy with your casting important, I often cast under features overhanging branches , etc or tight to far bank features , nothing worse than seeing your favourite hooked up on a branch .
I've got a Leeda Northstar 12' Bass rod that works really well for the bigger lures, quite stiff and robustly built, just not pretty. Probably way too long for canals but great on the broads and wide rivers. Can cast up to four ounces. I use a 4 piece spinner for the small stuff or more often I nick my son's no name junior match rod because that's got the most ridiculously nice bending action.
Great video and presented brilliantly. Well you've certainly taken the confusion out of it for me Paul. I think that as I'm only likely to be fishing the canal at Carnforth, and the stretch the P.A.C have taken over at Glasson dock Lancaster, on and up to Preston. And taking into account I'm an old codger now. maybe the G lite you use, using the top 5 lures you talked us through on your last video should do me. I'd be over the moon casting and retrieving for perch and some decent jacks. I daresay I could also use this similar set up for catching the Bass that come into the harbour at Morecambe. This is where I'll be come the 1st of march until the back end of October. If it turns out I can handle a reasonable pike around the early doubles, then maybe I'll step up a size or two. What do you think? As I say, I'll only be on the canal. I live in between Dewsbury, and Batley but don't see me joining any of the local clubs like Bradford city again. Thanks for all the info Paul, your a real gem. I wish there were more guys like you willing to share exerience. BTW I don't think you look like a pole. A tall bloke yeah, but not a pole. Keep em coming. Robin.
nosineb Thanks Robin. I'd say from what you say, you want to get out with your light set up and have some fun. It really is great fun and you get enjoyment from the massive shoals of small perch, the odd big Sargent that shows up or the feisty little jack disturbing your swim. Get out and have a play, find some venues and spots you can drop in on and guarantee a fish. Once you've fished six months you'll know what you want. You can step up a little if there are loads of pike about, similar to my light pike baitcaster but you could just get a rod rated to about 40g on a fixed spool set up. Step up the plugs and shads to 3 inch plus and your are a pike bagging machine. You don't have to cart huge lures like me and tire yourself out chucking 100g all day. I'm firstly a piker, I just love a pike smacking my lure and I can't help it. Doesn't mean everyone has to buy big lures. Lots of serious lure guys go through it all, then sell the heavier gear and go back to light. Light lures equals more fish, simple as that. Not sure about sea fishing as it's not my thing but though you could use similar small lures no problem at all. Yes I think I must be tall. At the minute I'm working on a video from a week or so ago where loads of the clips have my head cut off. lol
thank you for your answer! i will check thoose okuma comodo and citrix to see how it fits on the rod... one friend of my told me that for the big heavy lures like 40 to 80gr its better to use the round profile multiplicators...becsuse the low profile ones are not made for casting heavy lures...but i haved seen a lot of experimented anglers casting heavy lures with low profile multiplicators... i haved tried the low profile Abu Garcia Revo Toro Beast and i really like it on this rod! its a bit expensive but i haved save some money from few weeks and i want to buy a good reel...my budget its around 250-300€ thank you again!
+Claudiu Monea HI mate no problem at all. Your friend is spot on, that used to be the the answer. Lots of low profile reels were smaller and not built to withstand the heavier lures and much harder work. But the reels like the komodo are new improved and also bulkier reels with better equipment. The Toro beast is built for them too so should be fine. Have fun matey! :)
I find a 10g to 30g 6ft rod is good for me, i am a small lad and fish small waters 🤣 always been one to fish lighter tackle, even for the carp. So i am liking my little rod for the canals ect. But i am thinking of getting a heavier set up for bigger lures soon
Abu Garcia 'Ike' combo is highly regarded by a lot of youtubers. The same with their lighter combos. A lot of folks start with Abu Garcia combos because they are cheap - eventually upgrade to more expensive gear but always come back to Abu Garcia because they run and work so well even for a cheaper setup. You cant go wrong with one!
hi i have aquired a couple of carbotec lure rods. one is 5 to 11grms. the other is 10 to 40gms. can you explain what i can fish for with these please. Carbotec is not a famous make, these rods were designed by a guy called Geoff Salisbury. i have owned and sold his feder rods for £1100. a bit of a cult following. What the rods are worth isnt the point. a close friend of mine passed away last year suddenly ata young age and i want to use them. its all new to me as i was bought up on the Hampshire Avon and Dorset Stour where i still live. Barbell and big chub i can do but lure fishing is new to me. i love your videos and have learned a great deal from you. just require that little push. no canals where i live but lots of rivers.Thank you Brian Wimborne Dorset
Great video! I've been following you for quite a while now and i have to say: in my opinion you're one of the best "fishing dudes" on youtube, everytime i see your videos i just wanna go out fishing (although i sometimes have difficulties to understand your accent :D )! Thank you for that, and keep on with your great work! I'm "relatively" new to the whole lure fishing scene (can't wait for my 4th season - pike fishing is now closed until may :-( ). Currently i'm thinking about buying a new setup for heavy lures. Currently i fish, for pike, a Prowla Platinum Specialist 40-80g 9' + Ryobi Zauber CF 3000 and a Prowla Platinum Specialist Pro BC 80g 6'6 + Abu Revo SX. They work fine for me, but recently i started fishing with real eel and i find it uncomfortable to fish the 30cm eel with my BC setup. The rod seems to weak for me. Usually i fish lures around around 15-20cm (swimbaits, wobblers, big metal lures, shads), and i keep catching these "jacks" (mostly around 30-50, sometimes up to 70cm), but i never caught bigger than 92cm in my area. I know the big old ladies are there (river rhine), a friend of mine lost a 130cm+ and caught 104cm a few days later, also i lost another 130cm+ in summer, so i wanted to chase them with big meals :-)
Hi mate. Thanks for the kind words, glad you like my videos. Sorry about the accent but then even people I know don't understand me half the time. Lol I'll try to remember I have an international audience in future but I know now I'll slip back to mumbling my accent. You have a couple of nice set ups there but as you have found, those eels are a bit heavier. Look for a rod 120g or more as you have below that covered. Those eels do pick out the big fish so worth going big, even bigger with the 40cm eels. A real slow retrieve through a known fish holding spot and at some point one of those big girls will have it. You know where they hang out as you've come so close. Enjoy the misses and it'll fuel the desire to keep going. I've lost my share of big fish too it is part of lure fishing but I enjoy reliving those moments in my head and it makes me want to fish more. Good luck and thanks for watching. Keep me updated if you do finally get one of those big ones.
+TEAM RELEASE Perfect matey. You can get a million set ups for in between too but I mostly fish like you. Either light lures (but not as light as you) and my Roots. How you getting on with the Roots rod? Really enjoy using mine, had it a while now and it's done a great job.
+marc oshea Marc, just go get one. I know what you mean, i've been there and done it. Get in your head what lures you want to use. Try to stick to similar sized lures and then choose a rod to suit that casting weight. The rods these days are all pretty good and you don't have to go too expensive. £40 on a rod should get you something that will do a good job for a few years and at least until you decide exactly what you like and need.
thanks mate really helpful .il aim for jacks first so i get the feel for it .and then like you said i can step it up when I'm ready .ive been carp fishing for 25years but board of it so i joint a river stretch and love it .the pike keep attacking my fish on retrieve love it .been looking at the fox ulton from 15-40 thanks pal keep the vids coming.
Great video! I did order Daiwa Lexa 300 reel and now I'm looking for a rod to combine it with. The rod I've been looking for is savage gear butch light, but I'm not sure which way I should go with the lure weight limit. Mainly I've been looking for the 10-30g and 10-40g. I also heard that these rods are more sturd than what it says in the lure weight limit (for example, I heard that 15-60g version is more like 25-80g). So if I buy 10-40g version, could I cast like 55g lures with it (storm suspending wildeye swim shad) and some lighter poppers (8-15g)? I would love to hear your opinion! Cheers!!
Hi mate. You often find that with rods. Some end up over rated and some under rated. Unfortunatley there' only one way to find out for yourself. I have the 10-30XLNT and you can cast a little more than that easily. I think you'll be fine with the 10-40g and those lures at either end personally.
Really good video actually. Do you still twitch the really big lures on the stiff set-ups? I know you obviously do when using the jerkbait technique. Is a more steady retrieve more suitable for the squirrel and big eel? I've seen you on others videos varying your speed of retrieve more than the action with the big stuff. Ta.
+winchuni22 Good to know that helps a bit mate. so many ways to lure fish and so many solutions. If you ask on the net you get a million answers so not always easy so I tried to simplify it a little and show you some set ups i've used. I can't help it, I usually put some kind of movement in to any of my lures. I think it adds to the random, distress action that will trigger a pikes instinct. Yes on a big eel I might do a really slow straight retrieve but I'll also mix it up and speed it up, pause it, jerk it, stop start and so on. Do that with every lure and you've done all you can I think.
Hello, im looking into buying a new big pike setup, think im gonna go for a multiplier reel purely because I wanna try one out and a rod for hauling out some big lures for big pike maybe say 100g mark i think. However there are so many rods and im getting lost plus I'm still not getting it, lets say you have a 6ft, 7ft, 8ft and 9ft rod and they all have lets say a lure weight 30-75g (just for argument sake), what would be the reason of picking say the 9ft over a 6ft?
+spotter hi mate. If you buy a multiplier reel, typically the rod will be the shorter ones at 6 or 7ft. When you use a jerkbait rod and multiplier you hold the rod differently and you "tap" it down to put action in to a lure. A 9ft rod would always be hitting the floor but your 6ft won't. A normal lure rod and fixed spool reel might be an 8 or 9ft rod. So look carefully when you are looking at rods to go with either the multiplier or fixed spool as they will be different. The give away is either the title "jerkbait rod" or "baitcasting rod" and also it will have a kind of trigger to help grip the rod. A normal fixed spool rod might be called "lure rod" or "spin rod". Hope that helps you a bit. go have another look at some websites and rods and see if it starts to make a bit more sense. If you need any help before you buy, just ask mate I'm always here.
+spotter A few other viewers have bought that rod and never come back to say they didn't like it. It looks suitable for what you want and SG do some nice gear.
Hi fella, enjoy the videos, and I know rods are a personal thing, but I'm looking for something that can flip between bass and small pike. The choices are bewildering! Was thinking of something in the 10-25/30 range. What do you think? Regards, Paul
realmadyid thfc Have a look at what Savage gear have to offer and see if one of those suits. I use an XLNT 10-30 small jerk rod. It's quite a stiff baitcaster rod though. If you want a softer spin rod have a look at the SG Finesse soft lure rod or Fox Rage Ultron. Yes it's confusing and the best advice I can give you is get a price in your head, find a couple of rods in that bracket and then just go for it. Otherwise the more you look the more you confuse yourself. You read reviews that constantly make it harder to choose and you spend all day looking on the internet when you could be fishing.
Ive Been using spinning reels for a few years now and I would like to upgrade to a baitcasting set up. I can't afford hundreds of pounds because I'm only 15 but I was wondering if you would recommend any of the kastking reels as there in my price range and seem worth it. However, I mostly cast any thing from light jerkbaits to 20g lures so I also need a all round rod so could you recommend any around £20 that is fairly stiff for pike. Thanks
Abu Garcia pro max is my first baitcaster 10-48 grams and at 80 ish pound a great price I've upgraded to the savage gear woody recently but still use the reel
hello! i have a Greys Prowla specialist 2 jerk bait rod up to 80 gr 198 cm...and i want to ask you what kind of reel shut i buy for it? low profile or round profile multiplicator? thank you for your help!
+Claudiu Monea Hi Claudiu. It's all down to personal choice really, but I would say go for a nice low profile baitcaster with that. I would say something like an Okuma Komodo 273 would be perfect for it with 60lb braid. Also Okuma Citrix would be nice too which might be a little cheaper. If you already have a multiplier it will be fine to use. Some people find the round profile of the multipliers a bit too big and uncomfortable in their hands. Some other people prefer them, my buddy Ady has a Shimano Calcutta and loves it. Hope that helps.
I've never fished down there mate. Same rules apply though. if its a canal look for boats, lock gates, moorings, marinas, bridges and if it a river similar, with weir pools, deep bends, slack pools other things to look for. Pike in most waters over here so just keep mobile and something should show which will then give you something to work on.
hi Paul, I've been using a medium baitcaster set up (Abu blackmax) and have several fish with it, looking for a heavy set up I've found the savage gear mpp big lure and jerk 150g rod, just wondering if anyone had owned one or uses one so I can get a better idea of what I'm buying, my local lake is really quite massive and holds many double figured pike that have evaded my lighter lures, any tips and advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks guys, tight lines!
Hi Tom. Yeah the SG rod will do you a good job. One of the lads i know has one and says its a nice rod and does the job. As for your elusive larger pike, you might already be on to the answer. There may be less larger pike in the water so finding them is a bit trickier than the more numerous smaller ones. The bigger lures might help you do that. A big easy meal might encourage them to have a go at your lure. Best of luck pal
cheers for the reply Paul, the sg rod teamed with the deeper I've just ordered should do the trick, thanks again for replying, top man, top angler, cheers pal tight lines!
ive got about £150-£170 to spend on a new baitcaster reel. any advice or suggestions? currently using a viento but its not dealing with the bigger jerkbaits. i know its not made for them so im looking for something within my budget mate
Paul, the komodo 364 I have is just about in that bracket though a quick look and it seems most shops have bumped it up to £200 now. You could have a look at shimano curado 301 or maybe the Okuma Citrix 364. Other option would be a multiplier like the Abu Ambassadeur C3 series reels
Moving from California to the UK to work for a year. Have always fished here but never for pike any suggestions for a basic pike setup rod, reel and tackle ?
I'd go for a light set up. May be something 5-25g range so you can throw some small plugs and soft lures and catch a few pike. If you fancy a harder slog, but chance of a bigger fish, look at something in the mid range so something like 20-60g or even up to 100g to throw some larger stuff and get the attention of the bigger fish. When you get here you'll find less selection of gear than you have in the US but we'd got plenty of decent stuff for not too stupid prices too so you'll pick something up easily.
Hello Nigel. Mr. River Piker has a very interesting and informative channel. It's great that you are interested in catching Pike, and after you catch a few, I know you will be amazed when you start observing and learning about their unique behaviors. I'm not trying to "lure" you, but I want you to know that I've just started a channel for amateurs and I talk a lot about Pike. I have two "sure thing" lures that I will recommend when I do my Lure Episode. Anyway, give it a try if you want.
Hello mate. I've just bought my first jerk rod after the success of using the god father jerk. Got a fox 30 to 90 jerk. How do you rate those okuma calera reels? I'm torn between that and an Abu 6501 C3. I'll be using 66lb braid. I've found the okuma for £50
My old Calera was ok for lighter stuff but for the heavier lures it wasn't suited. not sure what the newer models are like. The C3 is built to handle the heavier line and larger lures and will be much better suited. You could probably get a reconditioned Abu for the same price as the Calera and it would do the job properly.
River Piker ok I'll rule that out then. How about Calcutta 251? Found an 80£ one. Sorry to keep asking but my tackle shops are rubbish and don't no anyone that uses this set up
Hi mate Just a few questions I've been fishing for pike like mad lately and have been fishing for pike for 3 years but lately got into it more, my lures range from Westin mike the pike, to savage gear 19cms, just wondering you said about big pike and how they take very big lures. I'm wondering should I get a jerkbait rod ? A lad I know is after getting a 20+ fish on a hard eel i believe a 24cm( on the river I fish) , I'm fishing places that have big pike but you don't always get them! Normally rivers and then in lakes in summer ( do baitcasters cast out far? ) I've got a few doubles on lures and that, but would it be that im not fishing the right big lures ? It probably sounds mad ahah, would love to cast them squirrely burts, I've recently started fishing on a deep river and after noticing all my lake lures aren't doing the job.. what rod and reel would you suggest ? I'm after getting 60lb power pro so that's the line sorted !! What rods would you suggest And a reel Budget around 100£ Sorry for asking these questions I've no idea and I've no one to ask! Cheers
It's a preference thing mate. There's plenty of lure anglers who use fixed spool reels and standard rods and catch big pike. It's not the gear it's about being in the right place at the right time, and then gaining the knowledge to keep putting you there more often. The lures you have will catch big pike. I've not got the Mike the Pike but i've had 20s on the 19cm 4plays, they are perfect size for big fish. The big fish are simply less in number, plus a bit smarter, so harder to catch. One day you will do nothing different and a big fish will just grab that lure and you've done it. Concentrate on finding those sweet spots where the big girls live. As for the lures, if you want to add more just look at lure types. A 19cm 4play swimbait will work different depths and style to a SG hard eel. Then what about a spinnerbait, a jerkbait or a big shad like a Fox Replicant. Just try to pick a few lures that give you variety to do different things and cover different depths or styles of retrieve. If you do want to go for the jerkbait rod and baitcaster. There's loads of rods out there, just get one 100g casting weight or bigger i'd say. No particular favourites just pick one that seems to get good reviews and is in your budget. Try to spend more on a good reel. The benefit of a baitcaster reel is they are usually built to handle the constant casting and retrieving of lures where a fixed spool reel isn't really.
River Piker cheers for the reponce, I'll have look around I might spend More on the reel as I herd you should spend more on the reel, just a question though do baitcasters cast out far with let's say power pro 50lb and squirrely Burt? Cheers
With practice yes they will mate. Getting a good balance is key. so a rod that can easily handle 88g is a must with Burts.A good reel will help with the distance too.
ive gone for a baitcaster and10-45g rod and plan on getting some braid 30lb but what dia ?would you add some backing first or fill up with just braid ? cheers and these video are great keep em coming
Chris. 30lb power pro is 0.28mm i think. If you got a standard size spool of 150 yards it would probably be spot on unless you bought a massive reel. Which reel is it by the way? Some people put 10-15ft of mono backing on or if your braid didn't quite fill it then add a bit more. There's no reel need to do it though. Adding a bit mono backing will help stop the braid spinning on the spool. However another way round this is to simple put a length of tape around the start of your braid on the spool and that's stops it spinning or some spools now have holes in where you can tie on to it which will also stop the braid spinning.
Mixed opinion. I had a Greys Prowla jerk plus which was 100g and it was too soft for jerks and I missed lots of fish because of that. Too soft for a jerkbait rod. But before that I had a Greys 150g jerkbait rod and it was spot on, did a good job for years. Not used or seen that rod up close.
well i just got the rod today, and the tips is stiff as hell. tested it by putting my spinning reel on it (i dont own a baitcaster yet) and tying the line to a table leg. its pretty weird seeing a spinning reel upside down on a jerk bait rod. for the time being im going to have to borrow my brothers baitcaster reel, but i will most likely ask father Christmas to get me an okuma komodo as its got great reviews.
Yes they do feel stiff but that is the design as you probably know. You're now an artist and that tip will help you make that lure dance and give you greater control. Christmas needs to come early though pal lol
Paul if I have a heavy rod rated to 170 gram and an ultra light set up rated to 18 gram. Would it be better getting a rod rated up to 45 gram or 60 gram
Hi Steve, sorry been away for a few days. I have a similar set up to what you say. Light rod, heavy rod and one in the middle for some pike fun, but without all the hard work of throwing big stuff. So yes a 45-60g is a good option mate.
its my first jerkbait rod I love it iam just really getting into the pike lure fishing paul your videos help a lot pal you do a grand job and ady the pair of you like a laugh to which is good ...keep up the good work paul thank you for getting back to me tight lines buddy
I remember watching this video and thinking how hard is it to pick a lure rod, 2 years later I got 4 rods and reel and I still haven’t found a setup I am happy with.
My pikes in years have never complained about my 40€ wallmart combo... they only cared about the lures that i gave them to play with. From 1kg small ones to double figures and all of them are saying the same.
Hi, firstly great videos! As a complete beginner I'm in need of as much advice as possible so I'm greatfull for the high quality of your videos and for the knowledge you share with us. I have just bought a Savage Gear, bushwacker xlnt2 10-40gr rod. Could you tell me please what line and leader I would need for trout or chubb And would it be different from what I need for pike?
Hi Stuart. Good to see you found me mate. Loads of good videos to catch up on. So your rod, 10-40g. It's more a pike/perch rod. You'll be using lures maybe 2.5inch to 5 inch, for soft shads, and then lures like 13cm savage gear lip lure. So more pike lures than trout and chub. Though that's not to say they won't take those bigger lures, both chub and trout can be a bit mental. If I were you I would use this as my pike rod mostly. If you choose to use it for your pike rod, then 30lb braid and match with a 30lb wire trace. If you are fishing snaggier waters or losing lures often, then you might need to step up to 40lb braid and trace. With lure fishing, you want to go as light as possible to help casting, but not too light that you always snap off on snags and lose lures. For trout and chub fishing, typically you would use a lighter rod. Something like 1-10g or simlar. Some lads use 0.5g to 6g, some will use 3-12g and so on. If you go that route, then you might want something like 6-10lb braid. If you were fishing waters with little or no pike then you could go for a fluorocarbon leader and 8-10lb is fine. If there's pike about then you might want a 10lb wire trace just as protection. If you check out some of my brand new videos I have some chub sessions and also some trout sessions. You'll see i'm using much lighter gear than your 10-40 XLNT and it's much better suited. It's all about blance when using the small lures, and enjoyment. Hope all that makes a bit of sense and helps you mate but if you need any more advice you know where I am.
@@riverpiker thanks for that. I had a feeling it was more of a pike rod. I'm please about that because it looks like pike are a good battle. I will also look at buying a lighter rod and reel for the trout. Thanks again for your help. Keep up the good work with the videos. I find them very relaxing! My lovely wife thinks I'm nuts but everyone needs a hobby. 👍
no rpoblem mate. The XLNT is a nice rod for pike mate. I have the older version somewhere and still use it sometimes. The size of lures you can use on it mean you have a chance of catching more pike, and so some good fun. Glad you enjoy the videos mate, thanks for watching. Got a bit of all sorts from tackle talk to trips abroad and so on.
+Skridge Milky Of course they do pal, big pike like to eat anything, they even get caught on tiny trout flies. But if you are targeting big pike with tiny lures you might have to wade through thousands and thousands of tiny fish until you catch a big pike. when the pike have been pressured with lures, especially big lures, a good way might be to try something smaller and see if that will catch them out. But you need to know that big pike is there in the first place or again, you'll be sifting through the small fish first. All depends what you want from your fishing doesn't mate. Catching big pike isn't the only way to enjoy lure or pike fishing either.
+River Piker I know! I've fished for a long time now- I don't enjoy so much catching smaller fish anymore- although catching any is still fun- but the lake we fish in Wisconsin in the summer has many guys throwing huge lures---- the much smaller chatterbaits have been very effective - and for the bigger fish quite often--- I think a lot of Pike guys haven't quite figured out that they are not only for bass---
+Skridge Milky Yep, as a lure fisherman you have to lure them in. That can mean any number of tactics and tricks as you know. Over here we have some long time pike anglers who have been through the big lure faze and use it when it is right. But we also currently have a bit of a lure craze and a rise in popularity with a lot of people brand new to lures and starting out with small soft plastics 1-2inch in size. They are catching perch and micro pike mostly. To quickly get the attention of pike, which for some a 30cm pike would be a very good pb, the bigger lures are the way to go for a quick success. With lots of venues only seeing small lures, as soon as a big lure goes in the pike take an interest. Lots of people bagging new pbs now just be going bigger to 4inch plus lures. As we've discussed already, once a bit of pressure is on the fish you have to dig deep in to your box of tricks. Plus it's nice to mix it up and play about with new lures, shapes, sizes and the rest. If we wanted to just catch fish we would be sitting it out with live baits but the idea of lure fishing is to have fun isn't it.
+River Piker I notice you guys like those reeeeely long rods--- whats that about? I normally use 7 1/2 ft.---- I did actually order some of those big savage gear Eels which I think should work well as Ive never seen anyone here in the states using them......
+Skridge Milky I'm using a 6ft 6in jerkbait rod and my pal Ady has a 7ft rod. If people use spinning rods then they might use 8-9ft rods but the experienced pikers using jerkbaits etc will mostly use similar to what we use. Most people over here use fixed spool reels and that's may be why they are on longer rods. Like I say the lure craze is kicking in so people are looking in to things more, learning why they use stuff and why not and also we are getting better options to choose from too. The SG eels are a good lure, had plenty of pike on them and they are good for perch in the small sizes too. i'm sure you will catch on them mate.
Amazing and informative live stream today, thanks! I was asking about chew during this livestream. I was just wondering if you had a preference for a heavy jerk bait fixed spool rod and reel set up. I have a medium baitcaster set up but I would like to switch back to fixed spool reels for a heavy set up as I just prefer fixed spool. The only problem is I have no idea where to start and I don’t want to buy a load of poop. By heavy I mean up to 120g max. I’m willing to pay up to £200 if needs be.
Hey bud. I’ve not used a heavy fixed spool for years now so can’t think of one that would be good. I was just using a savage gear mpp rod. Not too expensive to be honest. I wonder if Westin have anything out also, maybe give them a look up.
Hi mate. I used to have an Agitator lure rod, 20-60g i think it was. It was a little bit soft, however for a cheap rod it did pretty good. Gave it away to some kids as I never used it. I know a mate who has one and he still uses it. It should do a good job for you mate.
I've never fished there mate. Been on my to do list for years and still not done it. A 5-20g rod is not a bad thing to start with. You can cast 2inch shads up to about 4inch which will give you a chance of most predators, perch on the smaller and pike on the larger softies. It's good for finding out what is in the water. If you catch more perch, you get a light rod and if you catch more pike then you get a bigger rod. If you fish loads, you can afford to go big and risk a blank but a chance of a bigger fish. If you fish little, you need to give yourself more chance to catch so going smaller can help.
No mate. I just recommend you get your budget in mind, nail down a casting range of lures you're going to use and then just buy a rod you like the look of. So many rods out there, so many uses and more importantly so many opinions. What one guy likes and other doesn't suit it. Most lure rods are pretty decent so don't spend too long figuring out what you like then changing your mind and then changing it back again. just go for it pal. Have a watch of this video. It's another video about choosing a lure rod and it's more up to date too. ua-cam.com/video/8t8JLML57vw/v-deo.html
Great video !! I have currently been fishing with a spinning setup but I am looking at a bait casting setup so i can cast the bigger lures i have hidden in my table box. I have been looking at the Savage gear MPP 6'6 big lure jerk 150gr. and the Abu ambassedeur 6501 c3 reel. I am almost convinced of buying this setup, but I would like your opinion on a possible second reel that could fit the rod and that is good for casting the lures that weigh around 60-110 grams with no problem. thank you so much in advance, keep up the good work :)
Hi mate. Perfect set up, go for it. They both will be spot on for what you want. You will also struggle to find anything as good for the price too. Another reel, well I could offer a couple but would cost you more money than the Abu. Okuma Komodo 364 that i have or a Shimano Curado 301
last question.... I am buying braided line for the reel but not sure how many pounds the braid should be for the pike big i intend to catch. what would you recommend ? thanks in advance :)
You will be using big lures, so at least 60lb. Personally I use 80lb braid. That's not for the fish, but so you don't lose all your lures all the time which would happen if you only had something like 30lb braid.
Ok i´m trying to be honest here. The topics u pick to talk about are really good and interesting to me but i just cant watch it because of how often you say "ehhh". Maybe it´s just me and this is on my part...
Welcome aboard pal. Mate, nowt I can do about that. If you want perfect presenters go watch day time TV with Philip Schofield or someone. You'll have to take me as you find me mate but that works in a good way because there's no bull, no product placement or sales pitches you get from the pro fishing channels on here. I'm not trying to be anyone or be someone i'm not. I'll help you catch fish and entertain on the way. If its not for you, just make sure you enjoy your fishing pal. Make sure you check out plenty more videos because there's some awesome lure fishing stuff to catch up on.
cheers pal, much appreciated. Yeah that's me though, mate. Can't pretend to be something else. Here to have a laugh, catch a few fish and if we can help a few people enjoy the sport and catch some fish too that will do us!
As someone who has had an 18lb pike on an 3-14g rod. I can confirm that its not for big pike but big pike more than often wont say no to small lures if the opportunity presents itself😅😅
Guaranteed you will struggle but if you manage to land it, It will be an experience that you'll remember for years to come until you snag an even bigger one on the same gear.
I'm 50, fished all my life but never lure fished.
Excellent video with great info. Thanks
Great vid, exactly the information I need and has confirmed my thoughts about to what rod I want next. Cheers again.
Great stuff and thanks for the request mate. Tight lines
Great video
I was in search of a fishing rod for pike fishing and your video helps me a lot to make my choice.
Thank you very much :-)
Great to hear that it's help. Group your lures in to sizes, then pick a rod with the same casting weight and don't look at too many rods or you just end up confusing yourself. Good luck, I hope you make the right choice. :)
River Piker Okey thanks for the advice
I'll try to chose the right ones :-D
I never liked using shorter spinning rods , since I focus on further casting , .....and if I would not have used these rods from my little boat as well , I might have even gone for 10 or 11 foot seatrout rods(though 9 footers surely are still too long for a boat , most likely fishing from the bank , though)
At some point I also got into multiplier reels , so nowadays I could also present a similar rod selection , as you did in this video .
Hopefully people will read the comments and your input too as it will be a great help.
write a 6 page essay why dont ya
A very informative video, well done. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
I find practice makes perfect , practice casting at a target in the garden with an old lure with no hook , this is how I mastered my low profile Citica multiplier .
spot on advice that Kevin. Practice early on and you will master it much quicker.
It have been nice to add also information about the line you are using on different setups.
New Banner is looking good mate, Very Professional!
At the minute I'm working on a video from a week or so ago where loads of the clips have my head cut off. lol
thank you for your answer!
i will check thoose okuma comodo and citrix to see how it fits on the rod...
one friend of my told me that for the big heavy lures like 40 to 80gr its better to use the round profile multiplicators...becsuse the low profile ones are not made for casting heavy lures...but i haved seen a lot of experimented anglers casting heavy lures with low profile multiplicators...
i haved tried the low profile Abu Garcia Revo Toro Beast and i really like it on this rod!
its a bit expensive but i haved save some money from few weeks and i want to buy a good reel...my budget its around 250-300€
thank you again!
I know this vid is 5 year old but at the moment I'm catching 2 to 4 pounder pikes on a 5 to 15g with a no2 spinner and 6 pound mono. Some crack.
You cant go wrong with one!
walking talking lure fishing wikipedia good informative video buddy!!

hi i have aquired a couple of carbotec lure rods. one is 5 to 11grms. the other is 10 to 40gms. can you explain what i can fish for with these please. Barbell and big chub i can do but lure fishing is new to me. i love your videos and have learned a great deal from you. just require that little push. no canals where i live but lots of rivers.Thank you

Im using a BFT Roots 6,6 ft 160g for pike and a savage gear LRF 0,5-7,5 g rod for perch
+TEAM RELEASE Perfect matey. You can get a million set ups for in between too but I mostly fish like you. Either light lures (but not as light as you) and my Roots. How you getting on with the Roots rod? Really enjoy using mine, had it a while now and it's done a great job.
+River Piker have not used it so long. bought it not more than a week ago because my svartzonker Singnature broke. But it feels really good
Thanks man I just got a savage gear sg2 8 foot 6 up to 130 in grams I just need to get a 300 baitcaster what do you recommend?
thanks for sharing this mate I'm been driving myself nuts what rod to get.very helpful
Got a 13.3 lb pike out of our canal on a westin jerk bait last week
Thanx for the rapid response, think ill go for a SAVAGE GEAR MPP Big Lure & Jerk Rods in 100g option, managed to find it at a descent price
+spotter A few other viewers have bought that rod and never come back to say they didn't like it. It looks suitable for what you want and SG do some nice gear.
The benefits of buying a longer rod is you can cast farther, and also heavier lures depending on the sensitivity.
Hi Paul, do you know any 6’ jerkbait rods that are similar to the Jaxon inspiral? Just broke mine in the car boot but can’t find a replacement :(
Hi fella, enjoy the videos, and I know rods are a personal thing, but I'm looking for something that can flip between bass and small pike. The choices are bewildering! Was thinking of something in the 10-25/30 range. What do you think?
Regards,
Paul
realmadyid thfc Have a look at what Savage gear have to offer and see if one of those suits.
Thanks for the reply RP . Will be staying in Tutbury Staffordshire any recommendation for fishing locations ?
Good video pal
cheers bud
ive got about £150-£170 to spend on a new baitcaster reel. any advice or suggestions? currently using a viento but its not dealing with the bigger jerkbaits. i know its not made for them so im looking for something within my budget mate
Sorry to keep asking but my tackle shops are rubbish and don't no anyone that uses this set up
Hi mate
Just a few questions I've been fishing for pike like mad lately and have been fishing for pike for 3 years but lately got into it more, my lures range from Westin mike the pike, to savage gear 19cms, just wondering you said about big pike and how they take very big lures.
What rods would you suggest And a reel Budget around 100£
Sorry for asking these questions I've no idea and I've no one to ask!
Cheers m8
Looking at a 110g rated rod, No idea with the reel though Looking at Abu , Rod wise Savage Big lure and Jerk depends..
Cheers
Have a look at the Okuma Citrix 364 or the Komodo 364 depending how much you wish to spend
ive gone for a baitcaster and10-45g rod and plan on getting some braid 30lb but what dia ?would you add some backing first or fill up with just braid ? cheers and these video are great keep em coming
However another way round this is to simple put a length of tape around the start of your braid on the spool and that's stops it spinning or some spools now have holes in where you can tie on to it which will also stop the braid spinning.
hi ya iwent for the abu pro max 3 combo, spool has holes cheers for your help
Nice one mate. Should be perfect with 150 yards, you may even have a touch left over.
now got wait till santa s been as its a pressie
ha ha. Make sure you are a good boy Chris!
whats your opinion on greys jerk bait rods, or any of their rod as im looking at getting the 7 foot super jerk which casts 100 grams and under
Mixed opinion.
I have a 17 gram lure rod what size fish could this handle
Paul if I have a heavy rod rated to 170 gram and an ultra light set up rated to 18 gram. Would it be better getting a rod rated up to 45 gram or 60 gram
I'm currently using a rod rated to 90 gram and am going to get an ultra light set up
Hi Steve, sorry been away for a few days. I have a similar set up to what you say. Light rod, heavy rod and one in the middle for some pike fun, but without all the hard work of throwing big stuff. So yes a 45-60g is a good option mate.
minted video as usal paul ive got a savage lure rod 150gram max casting
Should be able to throw most of the big lures on that one then pal. How do you find the rod? Heard decent reports on them
its my first jerkbait rod I love it iam just really getting into the pike lure fishing paul your videos help a lot pal you do a grand job and ady the pair of you like a laugh to which is good ...keep up the good work paul thank you for getting back to me tight lines buddy
No worries matey, my pleasure. Just keep enjoying it pal and you'll do for me!
I remember watching this video and thinking how hard is it to pick a lure rod, 2 years later I got 4 rods and reel and I still haven’t found a setup I am happy with.
hi l have a Nomura Kanji spin 30-70gr is it ok for bigger pike.
+barrie watson Hi Barrie. Sure it is mate. Stick to lures in its casting weight so you can cast and work the lures properly. Tight lines
What gear ratio baitcaster do you recommend
Can you use this rod for stalking carp ?
A rod is a rod i guess so most will do a few jobs, even if not perfectly. Not sure how it would cope though to be honest.
My pikes in years have never complained about my 40€ wallmart combo... they only cared about the lures that i gave them to play with. From 1kg small ones to double figures and all of them are saying the same.
Exactly buddy. The fish don’t know
Hi, firstly great videos! As a complete beginner I'm in need of as much advice as possible so I'm greatfull for the high quality of your videos and for the knowledge you share with us.
I have just bought a Savage Gear, bushwacker xlnt2 10-40gr rod.
Could you tell me please what line and leader I would need for trout or chubb
And would it be different from what I need for pike?
I say only maybe---- I've seen BIG pike caught on small chatterbaits (1/4-1/2 oz)--- 42" plus- and quite often, not just once in a while.----
+Skridge Milky Of course they do pal, big pike like to eat anything, they even get caught on tiny trout flies.
I want to get a combo rod and reel setup how much would it cost
That's all down to you mate. You can buy a combo to suit most budgets. What are you wanting to fish for with it? Small lures, medium, large?
River Piker well I use savage gear line trough trout savage gear lip lure real Ell all 15 to25cm range
You should be able to get a combo for £100 or even less if you keep looking. Try the main webshops like glasgowangling they might have something on
River Piker thanks
Good videos. What do you reckon to the wychwood agitator rods? I'm after a medium spinning rod that I can use for pike and perch.
Hi mate. I used to have an Agitator lure rod, 20-60g i think it was. It was a little bit soft, however for a cheap rod it did pretty good. Gave it away to some kids as I never used it. I know a mate who has one and he still uses it. It should do a good job for you mate.
Ah cheers. I'll be mainly fishing the Broads. Spent much time there? Do you reckon a light set up would be better?
I've never fished there mate. Been on my to do list for years and still not done it. A 5-20g rod is not a bad thing to start with. You can cast 2inch shads up to about 4inch which will give you a chance of most predators, perch on the smaller and pike on the larger softies. It's good for finding out what is in the water. If you catch more perch, you get a light rod and if you catch more pike then you get a bigger rod. If you fish loads, you can afford to go big and risk a blank but a chance of a bigger fish. If you fish little, you need to give yourself more chance to catch so going smaller can help.
The broads is great. I recommend hiring a boat. Thanks for the advice. Do you recommend a certain brand of rod?
Okuma Komodo 364 that i have or a Shimano Curado 301
thank you so much for the reply and the great advice. will sure check them out :)
last question....
Maybe it´s just me and this is on my part...
should´ve commented on a newer video shouldn´t i? :/
Thanks for all your help. I like your straight talking.
cheers pal, much appreciated. Yeah that's me though, mate. Can't pretend to be something else. Here to have a laugh, catch a few fish and if we can help a few people enjoy the sport and catch some fish too that will do us!
River Piker Just remember, the more you try to help people the more others will go out of their way to find fault and put you down.
