    Back in 1979 I was in the marines. Was sent and trained with a Norwegian army unit for 2 months. The base was small and just outside of Tromso. 2nd Battalion Brigade North.

    Nice that you could see the Lights. I was in Tromso 1 Year ago and was lucky, too. The whole Weekend without Clouds. I heard from others before, that didn´t see any, or just a little Bit but only with Camera and not the Eyes... I think the good Thing is, that you have to be so lucky. So you are not just enjoying them, but feeling so thankfull at the same Time.

      Delighted you were also lucky! You are exactly right. The weather is a big problem and I actually made peace with the fact that it was more likely we WOULDN'T see them, even iff there was a massive solar storm hitting us. You can see in the video we had to go driving to find clear skies. I think I'll rename the video to
      "Clear sky chasing in Tromso"! 🤣

    We went to the same spot Ski Slope on Nov last week and were able to see it .There were 2 more cars there but was not crowded . We all were able to enjoy it .We all have to keep the lights off and complete darkness to fully see it . Thanks very much for precise location and it is very helpful for the one who want to see it themselves

    As you used your rental car did you have to use snow chain on the tire ? Or it’s not required ?

    • @StargazerMan

      Thanks. We didn't need chains and in fact I saw no other cars with them. The roads were well cleared and gritted. Maybe further out from the town of there was very heavy snowfall.

      For close to real-time clouds I use 'Windy'

    Hey, Even it's my dream to watch the northern lights since I was a kid, And I was planning a three days two nights trip to Tromso, Norway in February 2024, now, I am scared, I can't sigh the Aurora northern lights

    • @StargazerMan
      @StargazerMan  4 місяці тому +1

      Well, you'll never know unless you go! To be honest, I was worried also we would not see any as it's obvious not guaranteed. Worse for me was the thoughts of a great display happening overhead and it being blocked by clouds 😭.
      But we were lucky and it all worked out. Some of the tour companies will drive for miles and miles to find some places to see them. Best of luck!

      @@StargazerMan Oh thanks a lot for the reply sir. 😭, I absolutely loved your video! This gives me a lot of information about it, I also came to know about the website created with the help of AI. And atlast, I am not going with the help of tour companies, I am going on a solo trip. I think, I have to take a cab till where you drove your rented car. OMG, I wish I can spot the northern lights.

    • @StargazerMan

      I'd say at minimum 3/4 nights to increase your chances. It really is a gamble with 2 things. The weather and the solar activity. It can be totally clear skies with zero aurora or a massive solar storm will 100% cloud cover. So you'd need to make peace with the fact that there is a possibility you will not see them. But, I've heard the tour companies are great at really going as far as possible to see them. You're basically not aurora chasing but rather clear skies chasing!
      Good news is it's approaching solar maximum so there is no better time to go for it. As for the town itself, a days walking would do it. It's actually not that big and once you've ticked the boxs of the cable car up to the viewing point, the Artic cathedral and maybe the museum etc. you'd probably want to go whale spotting or the like. There are loads of tour companies in the town offering sledding, adventure tours etc. Best of luck and clear skies!

    What week of November is good to go? Planning my trip. Had no luck in iceland

    • @StargazerMan
      @StargazerMan  4 місяці тому +1

      Ah what a pity. I do hear Iceland can be quiet cloudy. Regarding November, if It were me, I'd go around the first week in the month as it's a New Moon and won't be in the sky to interfere.
      Best of luck! Clear skies.

    • @StargazerMan
      @StargazerMan  4 місяці тому

      Best of luck - don't forget to consider what phase the Moon will be when you go as bright Moonlight will reduce the intensity of the view. It's all down to how active the Sun has been and what the spaceweather forecast is. For example, you might have totally clear skies but if there is no activity you will not see anything. Same is true for the clouds. There could be a crazy bright solar storm hitting but if it's cloudy you'll not see it. So... you need both to be in your favor. As you can see in the video, we were very lucky that we found that gap in the clouds. we were esssentally chasing clear skies as opposed to chasing aurora! :-)
      Download some apps like Aurora forecast play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jrustonapps.myauroraforecast&pcampaignid=web_share
      And set your location to Tromso.
      Check Spaceweather daily before you go to see what if any activity is headed to Earth. www.spaceweather.com
      Then keep a track of the weather/clouds when you are there to chase the clear skies. I like Sat24 with Night Microphysics option checked (it can differentiate between low cloud & fog etc, basically Blue is clear skies)
      www.sat24.com/en-gb/country/se#selectedLayer=euMicro&lightning=on
      Finally, you could check with the Aurora Chasing companies when you are there because they often have reduced rates if they have no-shows etc.
      Clear skies (except for Aurora!)
      Hope this helps!

    • @StargazerMan
      @StargazerMan  5 місяців тому +2

      Yes! March is a good month for aurora chasing in Tromso. You'll obviously need some solar activity to create the lights but clear skies is what you're really looking for. I think March is a good month because it's not as cold as Jan or Feb, the days are longer (10/11 hours daylight) so you can do sightseeing during the day and then, hopefully, see some aurora at night.
