I was fortunate to attend a performance by this choir and conductor of this brilliant mass in Frutillar, southern Chile. The greatest musical event of my life.
Great performance of Wolfgang Schone in the "Quoniam", but also great job of the hornist and bassoonists.
Die Läubin-Brüder. Faszinierend.
I also like Suzuki's version, really good!
Mark (Marc :)
Immer unglaublich schön wie das ewiges Feuer.
So glad to stumble on this and see the utterly sublime Arleen Auger in a performance that doesn't come up in search! Also, how wonderful to hear awesome Wolfgang Schöne, after so many years! An absolute world-class musician.
And of course, "die schöne Martina." (cf 1:32 etc) As incredibly beautiful as she was, her heart is EVEN more beautiful...
Great congratulations for the French Horn player and also for Arleen Auger (RIP) and Anne Sofie von Otter. Perhaps the best interpretation of the B minor Mass.
This comment is about the first Kyrie being too slow. Some decades ago I was listening to a music professor in NYC discussing several performances while playing the records. One version stood out as its Kyrie tempo was the slowest of the lot. The professor said that if he were conducting it, he would probably take it a bit faster. Nevertheless, he felt that this slow version had a lot to recommend it and that he had to think about. I don't recall the conductor's name, but it might've been Maestro Rilling. Oh well.
At that time I had one box of LPs of the Bm Mass conducted by Richter who did a fine job, in my humble opinion. Now, decades later, I felt like hearing the Bm Mass. This time, instead of going back to Richter I decided to give Helmuth RIlling a try, and am happy to say that this version is a joy to listen to and so beautiful! And watching Maestro Rilling conduct is fun.
So when I was confronted with the slower Kryie, it seemed so very right. Why? Because the chorus is singing to heaven and imploring the Lord to have Mercy on mankind. It is natural to ask for mercy slowly. After all are you going to give the Lord the bum's rush? So, for this serious request the slower tempo appropriately adds gravitas
He may have been talking about Klemperer.
My goodness, the Laudamus te is gold!! The violinist's tone is so warm and beautiful, and von Otter is her brilliant self... perfection. She makes those endless phrases sound so easy (and I know from singing it that they are NOT!)
Bach's B-Minor mass - is carried by a passionate Faith - Did God feel such excitement at that first Christmas when He finally was able to send Jesus, the second Adam to give us a New Beginning?
It is great to see Rilling at his younger years conveying the spirit of one of Bach's Creation - isn't this one of the function of a Conductor - to represent the deeper meaning of a musical work - besides all the technicalities involved?
Merry Christmas 2019 and Foehliche Weihnachten....
I had the good fortune to see Helmuth Rilling conducting his Stuttgart orchestra and choir in the B minor Mass in Santiago de Chile a few years ago. The overwhelming feeling was of euphoria confronted with this majestic beauty. Then the feeling of almost excessive perfection; the orchestra and choir were so insanely perfect almost to the point of excess. It was evident that both orchestra and choir had achieved an deep knowledge of the music through innumerable presentations and practices, and it was obvious that Rilling had became a part of each musicians. It was, in the full sense of the word, a performance. One to keep in one's soul for the rest of the life. What a privilege to be a witness of this musical miracle. Thanks for posting.
"His"Orchestra was US!!!!! Stuttgarter Kammerorchester ) (Er since you OBVIOUSLY do not know. we were made by Karl!!!!!) mainly, Otherwise it was was what we called )on tour "a Moeken Otchester" a made up Ding fuers tournee!!
@@meme-mx4eq My humblest apologies. As you were traveling together I assumed Rilling was a stable member of the ensemble. Moreover, the function was announced giving this erroneous impression. As to Karl Munchinger who founded the orchestra he died in 1990. Somebody could have been selected as stable conductor.
@@jorgeurzuaurzua4011 ps, In MY humble opinion??? Now is Just Another Lot!!!!!! We all HATED yet LOVED Karl!!!!
@@jorgeurzuaurzua4011 Er, ok!! Eres, I mean em ok, hables espanol????????? Imagine the scare I got when recording these I touched a mic with my bow and was SHOUTED at from the control room!!!!!
Beautiful interpretation, my favourite so far
My great master Rilling! As always simply extraordinary! What a wisdom behind every note, every gesture! You are a giant dear maestro! One of the great performers and conductors in the world with an unlimited knowledge! I am so proud for being your student maestro!
Wer War Karl Muenchinger??? Collegieum????? have mitgespielt, also
Arleen Auger magnífica soprano muerta prematuramente (RIP)
Amazing
Maestro Rilling knows this music to perfection. Being his student during his conducting seminars has been the greatest experience in my live. God bless Professor Rilling
I love him and would give a lung and half my liver to study Bach under him. I own a all of Bach recordings conducted by Rilling an he’s by far the greatest. I love his work. I’m happy you experienced him, but green with envy I hadn’t been so lucky 🤷🏿♂️😆❤️
A monument of Western music led by the finest of all Bach conductors.
Indeed
I like Rilling's rendering of the B minor Mass. I believe his tempo responds to the solemnity of the religious experience. We are talking eternal salvation here, is is the XVIII century. I wonder why most German conductors chose a slower tempo, while Spanish, English, Nederlanders, go for smaller ensembles and faster tempos. Perhaps the German soul of Bach needs to be translated by German conductors? I had the privilege of attending a more recent representation of Bm Mass in Santiago the year 2012. Rilling conducted the Bach Akademie orchestra and choir. First and foremost was the experience of perfection. The synchrony, unity of sound, were amazing. The multiplicity of voices and instruments generated a unitary mass of sound that would be impossible with smaller ensembles and requires as a matter of course many years of uninterrupted practice. An unforgettable experience.
AWESOME!!!!!!!
This is precious!
Gratulation Herrn Rilling, und auch Gratulation dem Chor und Orchester. Einmalig.
b-moll
Si beau! Le ciel est tout près
How lovely to see and hear this mighty Mass played on modern instruments, by orchestral and choral forces larger than a football team, and in properly slow tempo (no, the opening "Kyrie" is not too slow - it's perfect). Rilling is a master. If you still haven't purchased his Bach boxed set on Sony, do so without more ado. And I'm saying this as a Bach non-fan. But the two Passions and the Mass are essential to the collection of everybody not entirely insensitive to music.
my fave interpretation by far.
....para mí este tiempo está perfecto.
Perfection.
MERCI !
Excelente presentaciòn.
Magic .
Bellissima esecuzione. Grazie
Merci !
Thanks!!!❤❤❤😊
Lovely. I also like the conductor.
The crispiest Cum Sanctu Spiritu I have heard thus far!! Very well done :)
Anne Sophie von Otter. Wie von einem anderen Stern.
Are there still musicians who believe what they are performing when they perform J. S. Bach's sacred music? And an audience that believes what it hears?
A lost world, today more blatant than ever.
Finally proper silence at the end !
Dona Nobis Pacem the most transcendent piece of music ever written. Makes an atheist believe in divine justice and lomg for diving mercy, almost.
I agree. Absolutely. Indeed.
Un auténtico festín.
Valeriano H
Esta velocidad está perfecta
Herr Rilling is thrilling, although I may need a helmet to protect me from Helmuth's gesticulating.
Isn't it Tom Randle in the chorus ?
Thumbnail looks like David Bowie
my exact thoughts!
Beautiful indeed. But Richter is the Master. Why Rilling jumps so much? It seems to me fake involvment, too histrionic for my taste. I don't think it is appropriate to jump like that while playing a Mass.
Am I the only one who thinks that the soprano looks exactly like David Bowie from several different angles 😂😂😂???
I was looking through the comments to see if anyone else felt this way about the singer. Haha you are not the only one!!
I am also glad to know that I am not the only one in this planet who think so 🤣🤘.
The alto, Frau von Otter, not the soprano. Yes, the resemblance to DB is there. Good 'ol eighties haircuts.
I also thought so immediately! I was even wondering if she chose her styling on purpose :)

The first Kyrie is sooo slow! And when I'm looking at his beat it always appears as if he wants it faster!
Willi Hansen I think the tempo is just right. It's marked Largo, after all. You're probably used to hearing HIP conductors interpreting it as if it's marked Allegretto.
There are several recordings out there that take it as slow or slower than this -- Klemperer comes to mind. The wonderful recording with Richter, Janowitz, Topper etc. seems about the same speed as this, and that's my very favourite at the moment.
His beat is SO FAR off from the music many times here! Kind of drives me crazy. I studied with him for a few years. The focus comes and goes... I do like the Kyrie tempo myself, though his holding out the last chord for so long was incromprehensible...
The heart of the mass is Sanctus. And it is much too fast. There was never a protestant conductur, who knew what 'Sanctus' Means
agreed.
dona nobis, please, not DONNA, please....
The tempo in the Kyrie is slow in comparison to many but it is a prayer and should not be in any way rushed. The recording, however, is not great and the choir sings with a lack of fluidity and too much staccato . I am not impressed overall
He's done this piece so many times... I heard him/them do it ca 1982 and he just rushed through it like the evening news. The orchestra refused to stand up at the end when he gestured for them to.
A lesson on how not to play Bach's music. Fortunately, no one follows this style of interpretation.
