    The wrist escapes mentioned came about from when someone grabbed your weapon hand. It's why the old jujitsu had so many wrist attacks in their waza. It was assumed one would be armed or even had a weapon in hand.

    Great video, and it is understandable that you were not that explosive since rokas it is just starting at judo and we are usually told to take care of the new ones, so nicely done and about the fluency en technique, i think i was good besides it takes so much work to start judo as an adult, i started at 16 and even at that age it s hard sometimes to competetive with the ones that started judo as a child, but it makes sense at the end xd. But whats great is that you dont give up and try to learn and improve you judo everyday

    When i was watching it yesterday, it looks like playfull randori to me. It was done with respect, people who talk bad, propably was expected that you guys will try to kill each other (some people still dont understand that "sparring" = traning fight not REAL FIGHT)... So dont worry about them and keep going with good work : )

    I suggest you to try kiogi randori with a Tomiki-aikidoka. Kenji Tomiki expanded the effectiveness of Aikidokas creating a randori more similar to judo. I am judoka that studied Tomiki-aikido up to 1dan and find it very beneficial and interesting. Also the history of Kenji Tomiki and aikido demonstration to Jigoro Kano is also interesting... to mention.

    First of all, it wasnt a shiai, you guys were not fighting, but doing randori, practicing together to help each other learn, and it was great seeing you guys doing that!
    My sensei once told us that if only one of you are beeing thrown in a randori, then that randori is wrong, both should fall and both should learn throwing and falling.Which I interpret as "If I can already throw you with migi O soto gari, I should try hidari O soto gari now, or other technique...If I see you cant throw me, I help you so you can throw me too." Judo practise should be challenging, but enjoyable, and even fun sometimes, meaning people can see Jita kyoei in action and understand that is how a group uses its energy with maximum efficiency.
    Dont listen to silly criticism, you should help each other learn, that is what you guys did!
    PS: nice tomoe nage Chadi! Would love to beeing throw by that waza.

      @@shinobi-no-bueno I see your point but you can and should throw him/her sometimes with force compatible to his/her level of ukemi. If you see your skill is overwhelmingly so your opponent cant handle, you should decrease and help him too, give him space to learn and not feel intimidated by you.
      I mean you should not make a randori a shiai...If you want to test yourself 100% go to a tournament.

    Hmm. Rewatching this I’m actually surprised Rokas didn’t shut down your grabbing of his sleeves. That’s like Aikido 101. Just the basic “waterfall” motion over another’s seizing hand with the defending hand (the hand that is seized) is enough to break the hold or cause pain. Or, he could of gone with heaven and earth throw. The mechanics are still there whether your intent is too keep holding on or not. However, Rokas is just starting to expand upon his Aikido and a lot of practitioners don’t do that.
    Good stuff.

    • @frederickmorton275
      @frederickmorton275 2 роки тому

      your average or even " really good aikidoka" can shutdown nothing. definitely not with wrist grabs- it is easier to control someone with fabric grabs then it is through wrist grabs. now your average aikido black belt will get owned by judo yellow belt 9 out of 10 times

    Given that rokas is quite new to Judo - going full force could be quite devastating. It was wise and empathic that you didnt!

    Good Randori. Friendly Randori. There are different levels of Randori. On a side note, I have never randori with someone wearing a hakama. Out of curiosity, would grabbing it to perform throws/take downs in the fashion of morote gari, koshiki taoshi or kibisu gaeshi be feasible? Would it serve as a good handle/grip? (I believe in practicing the full curriculum of Kodokan Judo even though the technique isn't allowed in competition.)

To use ur grips n to climb them.like a rope n be on there back......(plus people.suck at break fallin 😂)......if wrestlers do it in mma and in America.... why not Japanese arts???? Getting to ur opponents dead angle is everything in combat traditionally....why should it change in sports competing😤💯frfr u move well n u think well on da fly atkin sode to stop kote u sly devil 😈.....is probabaly why kano n dem defeated the old akido like u was saying that one video damn history be spitting facts ....i need to train sode moves more thank you for the take away🙏🏽this is enishi kinda thank you 💯

    Hey Chadi. I was wondering if you have or could make any videos on uchikomi in judo?
    I heard in one of your videos that's what M. Kimura's practice against trees was called and I thought that might be a great way to practice the techniques outside the dojo.

    • @jleano609
      @jleano609 2 роки тому

      uchikomi simply means repetitive practice. One typically drills with a partner and enters (tsukuri), performs unbalancing (kuzushi) but stops short of the actual throw (kake), then exit out and repeat. This can be done static or on the move. Idea is to build correct muscle memory and conditioning without smashing partner repeatedly - which sucks.
      But if you don't have a partner then drills with belts secured to something solid i.e. tree or more modern drills using elastic bands, can be used.

    One thing that I noticed about my judo when I started sumo, was my grip fighting. In sumo, you don't have a grip that you can stay comfortable the whole match, since there is no upper body cloth, you are always fighting to comtroll better the othrr person. Because of that, my grip fighting in judo got a lot more aggressive. Mostly gripping in the neck, always "annoying" the opponent and controlling him how I want. That would help you a lot in that match. It would also make him get used to someone dragging him around and not letting him get comfortable to apply his wrist throw of aikido.

  • @AnGhaeilge
    @AnGhaeilge 2 роки тому

    I thought your randori was fine Chadi! Randori is not competition anyways, it's just a chance to express yourself against an opponent with resistance. Yes, the intensity can be upped when prepping for competition, but watch any randori video in the Kodokan and it's mostly just light to medium sparring to avoid injuries.

    The problem is that if you go in hard and fast so will they. With wrists and elbows they break. Although with judo you tend to throw or trip to ground a person with aikido if you put a wrist lock or elbow lock on hard or quick these limbs are likely to break.

  • @robertreese6903
    @robertreese6903 2 роки тому +1

    Rokas seems to not understand the aggressive aspect of aikido. The soft part is a goal not the necessary form. Aikido is based heavily on Aiki-jiu jitsu. There are hip techniques that are taught and there aspects of attacking from the opponent’s weak angle. However it’s a good training exercise.
    For Chadi aikido is like a specialized for of jiu jitsu similar to Brazilian jiu jitsu. So studying the form and techniques is great but also understandable the weight and balance. There was a lot both of you could have done if you two had adjusted your balance.
    It reminds me of the philosophical point: “ Have a close view on something far, and a far view on something close.”

    I'm black belt in Aikido and i've also trained J
    Judo and Jiu Jitsu in my youth. But i don't think this vídeo is realistic. In a real street situation an Aikidoca would avoid at all costs being grabbed, would use much more Tai Sabaki, irimi, tenkan, kaiten, and above all, atemi. I've read somewhere that O sensei used to say that Aikido is 70 % atemi, 30% throws and locks. I guess that in a real life situation Aikido would be much more like Karate than Judô... Karate with Tai Sabaki and Maai, with some Kokyu Nage and few locks.

There is a seried of books, actually, there is a single book called tenchijin ryaku no maki, but there is a version divided in the 3 volumes ten ryaku no maki, chi ryaku no maki and jin ryaku no maki... And it has the most important techniques in the curriculum illustrated...
    Also, the stances are interesting... Because of the long stances, when sparring, the osoto gari style of throw looks more like a sumo nicho nage... Yesterday we practiced how to do that with an armlock grip if someone tries to defend from a muso dori(basically ude gatame) and finish it with a leg triangle on the ground

    That stance is wide open for drop throws and makikomi, also if you control his dominant hand at the cuff he will be severely handicapped in applying wrist locks. When I sparred with a person using wrist locks, once I realised what he wanted to do, I actually held the wrist out on purpose to bait him using a movement like a reverse punch, once you can get the dominant hand, keep it close and use that back hold you cannot catch a hand that is behind you and it is difficult to trap a wrist with only one hand. It is great to see you coming full circle and trying to apply judo against your former art, they both are versions of juijutsu

    Jigo-tai should be used only when you are attacked, if you spent the whole time defensive in jigo-tai, you cant attack effectively. Kano-shihan talks about how Saigo were one of the most thrown back in 1880's and then, he sharpen his ukemi and lose his fear of beeing thrown and started throwing his randori partners cause they were afraid in jigo-tai, and Saigo relaxed in shizen-tai, lauching attacks over and over.

I don’t agree with post-60’s marketing by Aikikai, and further lowering of standards/expectation won’t help sustaining the techniques or the art. Given that it’s hard to find appropriate schools even in Japan nowadays, I don’t blame Rokas or anyone living abroad for lacking the opportunity. Neither will I blame anyone else for not understanding where I come from, and simply take this as a hater’s comment. I truly care for Aikido techniques as part of post-classical jujutsu, and not as method of “love and peace” like people lacking appropriate practice will use as their excuse

    About the wrist grab defense you mentioned at 3:30, you can actually see GM Helio Gracie teaching on of his last students in this video:
    ua-cam.com/video/i_hpuun8pLg/v-deo.html
    Around 0:50 he tells the student (Cássio Werneck) to get rid of the wrist grab. Mr. Werneck doesn't know how to and just pull GM Helio around. Then he shows the proper defense to it.
    I've used this a few times in my no gi bjj classes whenever my opponent grabs a wrist with both of their hands.
    It is one of those things that I memorized from the first time I saw it. Probably because it is so simple.

    THIS IS HORRIBLE.
    Aikido is not chasing opponents' arms in order to apply joint locks.
    IT DOESN T WORK THIS WAY, and I CANNOT UNDERSTAND WHY ROKAS IS ENTITLED TO SPEAK FOR AIKIDO.
    The mere fact that you twist wrists, in it, doesn t have anything to see with aikido, which is not even a grappling style, which works better if you do the normal widely known Judo.
    He says that he understands that aikido is 99% atemi.
    Where are atemis here.
    This is bullshit.
    What is in the video, many aikidoka did, me included, more than 20 years ago, and it took a lot of time to understand that it nothing like the video here, also because this idea of aikido, SIMPLY DOESN T WORK in reality, with people who beat you while you grab them.
    We have had for decades the mess of a totally ineffective aikido because people was thinking about the mistery of the universe, and now we have the mess which confuses aikido with joint-locking when if you want to throw is much easier to grab the trunk than the joints.
    Done in this way, it will be always better to practice directly judo, or wrestling, instead than uncertain results with joint locking. You cannot remove and joint lock a kumikata from a judoka like that, you have only the 5% to get it.
    Why I know this? because I started martial arts and doing this, much before Rokas entered any dojo.
    If Rokas wants, can try the same with me, and he can bring the camera, of course.
    @Chadi I would like to show something different.
    I am available for a randori in judo rules with you in the same way how you are doing here with Rokas.

He’s been on a martial arts journey for a while. Have you not been updated on his channel? He is not bullshido anymore. I think you need to watch his videos on his channel. He is figuring out how Akido really works.
      Do understand, cops, military and security all learn Akido with other martial arts cuz it is proven effective when done right. The only thing wrong with Akido today is due to how they stopped pressure testing the techniques and left out important techniques that it had then. Cuz when it first started, it was a provenly effective system. The style’s creator proved himself against other styles like JuJutsu, Judo and so on. There is even footage of legit Akido vs Judo from way back in the 40’s or 50’s (give or take) and Akido used to teach grappling that you see in Judo or JuJutsu (cuz the style came from JuJutsu so obviously). But it’s a pacifist art. It’s not made for anything else except self-defense. It’s not the style’d fault. Just the way it is taught. All martial arts can work IF you pressure test them and know what you are doing.
      And it has been proven effective in self-defense if you pressure test it enough times. There are Akido schools that do that and I can link videos of them to you. Don’t be one of those people who act like trolls and trash a style without coming up with a valid or compelling argument. Cuz that kind of ignorance is what creates a toxic environment in the martial arts community. Now I am not an Akidoka myself, but I am trained well in Kyokushin and Goju-Ryu Karate, Judo and JuJutsu. I favor JuJutsu and about to learn Saunces-Ryu JuJutsu soon when my schedule is arranged right. But I have met real deal Akidoka and they have police and military background and experience.
