    Hey man thanks for posting, I too picked up a 7 String this past winter. All my friends who tried 7 string guitars in that past complained that they hated them. I personally love my 7 string (It's an RG 7321, not really well made), in fact I haven't really picked up my 6 string guitars in a while. It did not take much time for me to adjust to the lower string as you mentioned.

    Thanks for the video. I like the dog and the analogy to a car with a manual transmission. I love driving my 81 fiat with a manual transmission, so giving a 7 string a try sounds like fun.

    you seem like a really cool, down to earth guy. thanks for making this video. recently picked up an Ibanez Iron Label 7; 27in scale, ebony board, Gibraltar bridge, abalone binding, gold hardware.. i could go on anc on, beautiful instrument! what im trying to say is that this video has inspired me to go 'all in' with it. to break out of the 20 years of 6 string playing that ive frankly become quite bored with. you gained yourself a subscriber. keep up the good work!

    7 strings are better for musicians like me that hate tunning and de-tuning. I can play almost anything I want on a 7 string, just like I do on my 5 string bass. We save time and become better at transcribing song from standard tunnings in E, D, C, etc to B standard on the 7. It's just a matter of choice.

    • @Chris-cf2kp
      @Chris-cf2kp 6 років тому +1

      What interval do you usually tune the seventh string to, or what is it commonly tuned to? Do you keep the other six strings tuned to standard tuning, or perhaps go for fourths tuning on a seven string? I'm considering getting one.

    • @marcvolgers6818
      @marcvolgers6818 4 роки тому +1

      If that works for you, it's of course okay, but many guitarriffs are not just a collection of notes and chords. Often the position you play it matters, e.g. by using open strings. For a metal riff it's quite common to have the low E string as a pedaltone or clean "let ring" parts use open strings. Everything can be 'relocated' to a 7 string, but you will lose the open string sound or it's impossible to play unless you have a superlarge hand and/or extra fingers (For examply, try F#add11 that's played on a guitar tuned down 1/2 step (244300), making it a Fadd11. On a standard tuned 7 string that would become something like 688736X which is by all means impossible to play under normal circumstances).

    • @khay2210
      @khay2210 3 роки тому

      Like who enjoys tuning and de-tuning especially when you only have one guitar. If it works for you then keep doing that, I haven’t had my 7 string for so long and it feels like the first time I got my first electric guitar, it just feels natural.

    Badass man! Good advise and the thinking behind it seems to make sense. I been playing most of my life too and just bought my first 7 string PRS se custom 24, and at first it was just kinda finding those low chord phrasings but I'm loving it now. Just havingn the ability to use those if you want is awesome. Cool vid I'm subscribing rock on.

    • @Fsavulich

    • @bradleystroup1457
      @bradleystroup1457 8 років тому

      +Franklin Savulich yeah, I pretty much view them as if they are over chord/arpeggio shapes, or more over if you are playing against that chord, it shouldn't matter about positions

    • @Fsavulich
      @Fsavulich 8 років тому +14

      yeah this just shows that the guy hasn't really mastered the essential concepts on guitar so he shouldn't be adding more strings

    • @clarkfeeley1959
      @clarkfeeley1959 8 років тому +10

      It goes a bit deeper than that.
      Your fucking favorite arpeggio sweep doesn't constitute a scale LOL .
      If it was drop D the next closest D was right the fuck under your 1st finger all along.
      Video makes no sense in the slightest.

Love the application of theory too haha

    This clip was perfect for me and answered questions Ive had botled up for a long time. Im thinking of getting a Jackson X series 7 string or a Chris Broderick pro 7. How you spoke of breaking out and away from the 6 string mentality really struck a 'chord ' with me and I'll definitley get one of those two 7 strings and give it plenty of time. Ive subscribed to your page...Im interested in finding some of those huge fabulous sounding chords....thanks for a great post

    Dude, I just got my first 7 string guitar a few months ago. I had been going back and forth on this for a while. I've always been a traditional 6 string guitarist, and never liked the idea (or the issues) that come with down tuning or de-tuning. I rectified (no pun intended...get it, like, rectifier??) this by using a 5 string bass on my albums. That makes a world of difference! But I finally ended up getting a 7 string, the ESP E-II Horizon FR-7, and I absolutely love it! I've already recorded the guitar tracks for my new album with it!

    Don't apologise for talking theory. :) It's so important and it gets shunned too often.
    I like the "you don't have to use the low string if you don't want to" comment.

    • @erwark
      @erwark 9 років тому +1

      Another comment I wanted to add:
      I play a 7 in B Standard (B + E-Standard) and it totally opens up the scales. You can drop to the 7th or 5th below the root on the 6th string without changing position, which is awesome, especially if you're playing in 1st position E minor - you can fall back onto that D, which is previously not there.
      Even if you drop-tune, you can use the standard-tuned scales from the 6th string.

    • @GuitarGear1
      @GuitarGear1  9 років тому

      The theory thing is tough- I think its the kind of thing someone has to be seeking out, receptive to, in a mood for- and, the ultimate caveat... They have to have an attention span :) .. As some of our esteemed fellow humans have helped (or forced) me to understand- guess I'm maybe not the guy people always want to hear that from. Dammit if I'm not gonna try though ;) Excellent suggestion here and its so good to see some real talk on the page :) Thanks for coming by.. All the best.. Ty.

    Very VERY well explained. I got my first 7 string 10 years ago, a Prestige 1527 (for 600 bucks brand new, mind you!) and have never looked back. I still play 6 string guitars, and I don't mind them, but I always feel that necks are way too narrow!
    What you say about theory and guitar playing is completely true. Like, I have NEVER heard about pianists complaining about excessive octaves on their keyboard, or talking stupidity about a bigger keyboard with more keys...
    Kids nowadays are funny with stuff, but it's just them being afraid of something they haven't done yet. Give it a try, mate....it only took me ONE WEEK of adjusting! and in my case, I can play 8 strings ANY TIME because guess what...I KNOW MY THEORY AND I KNOW MY INSTRUMENT.
    Keep up with the great work here, mate! This is a GREAT VIDEO. * * * * *, yes... FIVE STARS!

    Now I've played 7s before, but do not own one. I actually recently undertook an interesting experiment that was completely by-chance. I have two guitars, a strat and a PRS, and I broke the 11 on my strat. I've been playing it with 5 strings for a few months, and the PRS with 6, to see if there is really any tonal difference. The only difference I've found is, oh, I'm missing my high e string. I rarely EVER use that string as it is, and since I started venturing into Open alternate tunings (I'm playing in Open Bb right now), it has been a blast to have the high Bb without the E to screw up my tonal recognition of some of the large chords I play. Perhaps this will help me in my transition when I buy a seven next month. Am I stupid for not replacing that sixth string? Oh sure. Absolutely. But this is my musical venture, and I really have no care for the opinions of others on it. My sentiments towards seven string guitars are yours exactly. I already play as if I were on a 7 string, on a 6. This is hard to explain, but if you'll hear me out, you'll understand. I play very open chords, and follow very out-of-the-box players, and am not a conventional musician as it is. I've been doing this for about 3 years now, and it has molded to me. So I think my transition from 6 to 7 will not be as long a process as it was for you, even what with all your dexterity and devotion, because I am already preparing myself for the transition and have been for years. In just an afternoon, I learned Icarus Lives all the way through. It was very fun, and I can't wait to explore my musical options with extended range, though I can't stress enough that this whole "djent" phase has ruined some of the antiquity of musicianship and musical truth I find in some other bands who don't even call themselves such a thing, but have used extended range. It's almost beaten to death among several music communities by complete meatheads who honestly, from my interaction with them, have little grasp on theory or music in general. Oh well, I know I'll never go that route, so I'm fine with it. Thanks for your video, and I'll check out your others as well as subscribe. You have a lot of practicality and are easy to understand even when you segue. Tchao!

    Each scale isn’t locked to its rout note position. All 12 keys, major, minor, modes and other scales are available within a span of 6 frets, in the same way they’re all available in a single (or two) octave on a piano.
    You don’t have to jump around like that. I appreciate people might
    want a particular arp shape that extends from the root. Playing from position rather than finding your nearest root on the 5th or 6th string tends to lead to more considered voice leading to my ear anyway.

Only thing I'd disagree with would be the advantages based on the relative positions of the scales and chords, since you can play the same chord/scale anywhere on the neck on a 6 string without needing to jump around. Cheers!

    I really like a dropped A tuning because it allows Drop D shapes on the lowest strings and standard shapes on the normal 6 strings which are tuned standard EADGBE. I can go from metal to playing "Stairway". It's also easy to play 5th(and other chords) up and down the low strings. If your song is in the key of C you can play A,B,C,D,E,F,G powerchords on the AEA and D strings very easy. Just having the ability to play the dropped shaped chords which are only possible in standard tuning with usually 2 guitar players. I play Major and minor chords on 3 strings in the drop area where in the standard area it can usually have to play more complicated shapes and stretches. But 7s are not a replacement to 6 and should in no way devalue the 6 string or the standard tuning and shapes. Enjoy whichever you play best or can use to the best, you can may great music on a 4 strind baritone Uke which is tuned like the four highest guitar strings DGBE. You just gotta find what works(and inspires) you.

    In the past year I've been constantly trying to reach for that 7th string that isn't there when messing around creating my own stuff. I need this in my life.

    I can't get out of a 7 string... I learned on a 5 string bass then have a 7 string so, Am used to haveing my low B and feel complemy lost on 4 string bass and 6 string guitar.

    thanks for the vid, very useful. I'm just 'transitioning' to a 7 string. Totally agree with the idea that you don't NEED to use the extra strings. The ibanez 7321 I got is a great guitar, ignoring the extra string.

    Thank you for making this video! I have had a six string for a little over a year and I'm fairly fluent on it, but still learning of course. I have also been doing some research on 7-strings and how much of a broader range of sounds you get from them, and you basically confirmed everything I was questioning about a transition to 7. So now am currently waiting for an Ibanez GRG7221 Guitar to arrive in the mail. I can't wait to start experimenting with it. Just out of curiosity, would you recommend the guitar I mentioned earlier to a beginner?

    My transition between 6 and 7 strings was very easy. My first 7 string is a Schecter C7 Deluxe which I bought less than a month ago after 10 years of playing 6 strings and it's an amazing guitar for the price I got it for (I bought a 2016 example used for 230$). I did not only have to get used to the 7th string, but also to a longer scale length (26.5 unlike 25.5 that I usually have on my 6 strings) and the fact it doesn't have a floyd, and so far I feel very comfortable and enjoy 7 string guitars on more than an enormous amount, you have that feel and the versatility that you just can't have on a downtuned baritone 6 string. Hell, I enjoy my 230$ schecter more than my friend's 2800$ Musicman Majesty since I began to kinda hate 7 strings that just feel like 6 string with just the additional string (you know, 25.5" scale, non locking trem, very flat neck and a lot of shreddy intentions. Which I don't like since I prefer playing Djent on them instead of shredding, that's why I have the 6 strings LOL)

    hey man I'm 16 and been playing 6 string guitar for a little while and been wanting to get more of a korn sound persay but I wanna keep the higher chords to play more of just normal rock and metal so would it be smart to get a 7 string?

      +Jacob Apala I've only played a 6 string, but considering you want the best of both worlds, I'd say go for it.

    It was funny to me that you said that playing on a seven string is easier, but you played the six string better. I like your perspective on guitar playing as it relates to guitars. I really wish I had advice like yours when I was a kid.

    Perfect sense. All 7 major notes on the 7 string, yet does take practice. At first, you do feel you might have made a mistake taking it on, but then if played enough you start to get it. It's string muting, slowing down enough to practice the sounds you want and bearing in mind the frets are closer together than on the 6 string that slowed me down.....plus trying to tune the 7th to a B ( bad advice, no idea where I that one from, but tuned it back to A and things have been working out okay so far). I initially thought the extra string would give me more " thunder" as metal player ( and it does) but its incorporating that string comfortably that takes time.

    Totally agree with you :) I still only own 6 string guitars, but my next will definetly be a 7 :D simply for having dropped tuning and the option of full chords in one Guitar. A new thing for me was the Idea of the rythm cord+ Lead lines, that they actually move closer together, so one more reason for me

    Helpful video! I've been debating about wanting to buy a 7 string for a while now, and I might just do it as my next purchase lol. The only thing I'll say, and it's super minor, was when you said that E# and B# do not exist lol they do both as enharmonic spellings and in theory which can in turn transfer to the instrument.

    Can someone please explain to me what he means @12:10 is he saying those chords can only be played on a 7 string? If so can someone explain why? I thought it was just a guitar with an extra low B so how can different chords be played on it?

    So, I have a random question for basically anyone listening, lol I am starting out learning to play, it's coming along pretty well, but how long did it take y'all to get down being able to move your fingers and hits your notes and chords so fast, I can barely move fast enough to go from one chord to the next or even slide my hand from one spot to another, how long did it take for you to learn and move good enough to play lead or so anything besides rhythm? Thank you for any help

    Hey I just found your video, awesome information!
    Could you do a video going through some of your favorite chords for 7 string?
    I own a 7 string but am still relatively new to all the accessible chords. I am auditioning for a band that ONLY plays 7 string guitars, and I absolutely love their sound. Regardless of whether I get the guitar spot in their lineup, playing their music on my 7 string has opened up my mind to the sounds of an extended range instrument. And I am now wanting to learn more
