I've only had mine for a day, and the hardest thing has definitely been playing the inner strings. My brain is used to the D and G being in the center. Now they are a little further over, which is a bit confusing. I have already been integrating the low B string into stuff I normally play. It's really cool and gives old riffs a new dynamic.
@@jasonstallworth Same here I've begun playing 7-string about a month ago (but from time to time I just slip back to my 5-string bass because I'm always torn between guitar and bass and I love both, but on the bass I have an easier time transcripting different tunings, cause I don't have to worry about tuning, especially regarding drop [note] one-finger chords). Still getting used to the new range (especially since its a multiscale), but I know it's a keeper for me, as soon as a guitar tech can adjust it just fine with new strings (Ernie Ball 7-String Power Slinky, I'm a sucker for Ernie Ball since I started playing guitar).
@@Cyclobomber Dude, there is nothing like a 5 string bass! That's what made my prior albums sound heavier. Many thought I down-tuned for those albums but they were recorded with a 6 string guitar, standard tuning. You can hear those here (scroll down to my prior albums - the recent one, Masterpeace, was 7 string): jasonstallworth.com/music
@@jasonstallworth I know I loved my 5-string as soon as I realised I could play Slipknot (Drop B), Pantera (Drop C), Dark Tranquillity or Snot (Drop C#), Swashbuckle (D standard) AND regular E/Eb stuff without touching anything, and I just love playing bass when I want to focus on rythm & groove instead of chords. Thanks for the link, I'll check it soon.
Jason, is it impractical to play both 6 and 7 string guitars? I’m a new 7 string player, and I feel like when I get used to 7 strings, I become sloppy on 6 strings, and vice versa.
@@jasonstallworth First off, sick video! I'm about to get my first seven string after 8 years of a six string. Also, since you said you did death metal vocals, what in the hell is it supposed to feel like in your throat. Every video I've found on it isn't very descriptive on how I should practice screaming. ThAnKs!
@@cjorourke722 Congrats on getting a 7!! I will soon be putting out a video on how to sing death metal. But until then, I just released a video showing the gear I use for metal vocals here: ua-cam.com/video/pPp0CdzNSDQ/v-deo.html
Just purchased my first 7 string last night, and while I’m waiting for it to arrive I figured I’d start learning about it. So glad I stumbled upon these lessons to help smooth the learning curve, thank you.
I actually have a playlist for 7 string lessons and tabs! Because of your comment, I will continue to add more! ua-cam.com/video/sQ_0dqNHcLE/v-deo.html
Playing everything I learned on 6 strings on my 7 made me feel like I wasted so much time learning all those chords. Then I did exactly what you said and pretended the B string wasn't there and it made ALL the difference. Now I don't even own a 6 string electric lol.
It does make a huge difference, just pretending that extra string isn't there at first. And yeah, like you said, you almost don't need a 6 string after that!
The first riff in the beginning on the 6 string sounded like classic thrash, whilst the same riff on the 7 string sounded like Amon Amarth imo. Great playing 👍
I've been playing guitar for about 15 years, 7-string for about 10. And I gotta say, before I clicked, I guessed all the 3 tips. I had EXACTLY the same problems when I was starting out on my 7-string Mayones. This vid would have helped a lot back then. All this comes even more into play when talking about 8-strings, because you can't really treat them the same way and play power chords all the time; you can get away with it on a 7-string, but not on 8. Great tips, listen to this dude.
Thank you my friend, and glad to hear we were already on the same page! It was a tough transition! And there are still times where I'm like 'What did I do...should I have just stayed with my 6 string??' 8 string...I don't know that I see that in my future, but it's awesome to see folks that can play those !
My favorite/challenging part was figuring out the nuanced change to left and right hand positioning to keep the clarity of notes. It's also a ton of fun to drop the B to A...
Yes I'm thinking about going to a seven very heavily because I came out of the '80s era and for people like myself that came out of the '80s era there's so much more you can add with more range on the guitar and make everything sound so much newer and heavier
Im about 5 years late. But have been playing on 6 string for about 8 years now. Got a 7 string on the way. Should arrive tomorrow afternoon. Can't wait. Been wanting one for a couple years now, just didnt feel ready. Good thing I enjoy a challenge.
Dude, it does open you up to a completely different world. And there's a learning curve. But it's like anything, the more time you spend with it, the better you become and it will soon be second nature to you!
That's exciting!!! Yes please keep me up to date with your progress! This may help as well...I have a 7 string playlist I've started so keep all the 7 string lessons together: ua-cam.com/video/sQ_0dqNHcLE/v-deo.html
Definitely a period of adjustment. My biggest hurdle “for me” was how to tune this new beast of mine. So I learned to tune my G to an f# and then u can use the 7th-2nd string just like a normal 6. Rule of thumb, anything big brother can do, little brother can to. So if your finger is on the Low E, say, on the third fret? Make sure your holding the same fret on the high E. Same goes with the low and high B. Will make for some fully awesome sounding cords
Yeah, dude, it's a transition period for sure! But I'm glad we were both willing to make that jump and learn something new! You open up so many more possibilities with that extra string!
Man... the 7 string axe is intimidating, the moment i picked it up i just forgot everything i knew, but with your tips i bet i'll get used to it in no time, Thanks! lml
I'm glad you mentioned 'intimidating' because yes, it can be! And I had always felt the same way. But trust me dude, when you get it, spend some time with it every day and see if my tips help you! Either way, after playing it for about a month you're going to be surprised how fast you become comfortable with it! Leave another comment here to let me know how it's going!
Have a 7 string for about 2 months. Went straight to playing the 7 string as soon as I got the guitar. Now 2 months later I'm having challenges playing the full 6 string chords that I've been playing since the 80s. Started to realize that I have to become familiar with playing all my 6 string music on the 7 string guitar first without playing the 7th string. Then like your instruction go to the 7th string comfortably. Otherwise my playing is becoming sloppy and I've losing my 6 string reference points (low E string).
There are fanned Fret versions of these Guitars (especailly those going down to a Low G#0 w/ 10 strings etc) that have Short Treble Strings & Long Bass Strings to make it feel more at home. The Fanned fret design (that's from the Orpharion) really improves the intonation alot.
I picked up a jackson slattxmg3 soloist 7 string about a year ago and it's been pretty much collecting dust...EXACTLY for the problems you mentioned in this video ironically!!! I'm going to try your advice and get used to playing this thing if it kills me. I started playing 70s and 80s hard rock/metal around 1985 on a 6 string. Later in my life I transitioned from 22 fret guitars to 24. It doesn't sound like much but the extra 2 frets and longer scale length really throws off your game for a while due to muscle memory!!! Lol (I'm sure I'm not the only one). BUT now I have this beast of a guitar and was ready to dive into some slipknot, korn, soad, and other downtuned metal greats without having to deal with spaghetti strings...it was a lot more complicated than I thought it would be! Thank you for the tips!!!
@@jasonstallworth Thanks man I really like your stuff. Cant wait for the next video. Keep up the 7 string stuff. Shortly I may say fuck it and get an 8 string. 🤘
I'm watching these videos because I have a 5 string Bass and it's a struggle to find good bass videos about it. I'll definitely do what you said here. Now I'm thinking about getting a 7 string guitar to go with it.
Yeah, the 7 string guitar and 5 string bass fit perfectly together! This isn't necessarily a lesson for 5 string bass but it may be helpful to you: ua-cam.com/video/IIUvQ3yO-aw/v-deo.html
I just bought a 7 string guitar... by accident. I saw a black sleek lookin guitar for cheap, I was like "sold" & didn't notice the 7th string til i got home... Was thinking of returning it, but after watching this video I think I'll keep it... Thanks, Jason!
@@jasonstallworth bro I'm 57 so a lot older than you. Bought my LTD 7 string baritone four years ago. Us older guys still got a load to offer 😄 Love ya style bro. Respect 👍👌💯
Damn it ! You are so right ! I got my first 7 string a few month before you released this video. At first I was like "not using the 7th string to get used to the guitar ? what ? really ? Does he know what he's talking about ???? How am I supposed to get used to it if I don't play it ???" :) But actually you are so right, I had to spend quite some time to play only the first 6 strings, to let my brain figure out that this extra string is not the same as the 6th string. At first I felt so confused and uncomfortable with the neck width, but that was because I was playing it as a regular 6 string. As awkward as it sounded, that advice is gold ! Cheers !
Thank you for this great tips! I've had my first 7 string guitar for about a week now and I have been playing the B string more than any other strings lol I will start practicing full chords and songs that are for 6 string. I got an Ibanez 7 string and because it's designed so nice, it was so easy to play since the day I first played it. But I do sometimes get confused when I play a power chord on the A string.
I've been a 6 string player for 20 years now and I just got my first 7 string, That B string is killing me so I'm gonna try your tips. I think not touching my 6 string for a week is going to be hardest lol. Thanks for the video man.
Dude it is tough not to revert back to your 6 string, especially when you have one that you love! But yeah, just leave it alone for a while and give yourself time to get used to the 7
I’ve been playing Guitar for about 14 years now and I have 3 Guitars that are 6 string (Ibanez Gio, Dean ML Dime O Flage, and a Cort X2) but last year in March I purchased my first 7 String and it’s a Jackson JS-22 7. The transition was a bit trickier than I initially thought but like you said in this video, keep on playing the 7 string instead of your 6 string for a while and it becomes natural. From my experience after playing the 7 string for so long going back to play on my other Guitars makes me better as a player altogether.
I ordered my first 7 string just over 2 weeks ago, shortly after that I got a finger injury on the index finger of my fretting hand and am wearing a splint for the next 4-6 weeks. My guitar arrived last week and it looks and sounds amazing but it's weird and clumsy as hell playing it with three fingers. When I'm fully back in action I will follow this advice though. Good vid dude.
Extended Range Guitars are great for Gospel Music (and Gospel Singing too) because the Lower Strings allow you to transpose on the Fly. So you can also bring your 7 String Guitar to a Church Gig as a way to add a bit of Metal to spice up the song, & also the Low B will make transposing easier. Singers will also love these Guitars cause we've gotta find the right key.
@@dku001 Yeah I think E, D, & C are a bit too high so I went down a half step. So I tune my 7 string Guitar down a half step, so Eb standard on the Top 6 plus a Low Bb on the Bottom (same bottom note as on a Bassoon)
I picked up a 7-string about a year ago and rarely pick it up, these tips are inspiring me to try it again, thanks brother. (You got a new sub, also I have the same desk!)
Oh dude, that's really awesome to hear and glad this video inspired you to pick it back up! I do feel your pain...seriously, there were times even after making this video (and even after recording an entire album with it) that I almost laid down my 7 string and went back to just playing a 6 string. I can honestly say that now, over a year later, I'm quite comfortable with it. So you will absolutely get there! Just make a point to play it every single day!
I have an LTD M17 it's just an entry-level guitar, got it for $500 AUD but it has an accessible neck unlike some Ibanez or even Jackson's and still sounds great for the price. And I really had no issue transitioning because the neck was so comfortable to play.
I just turned 51 last month. Today I purchased my first ever 7 String. Many times I have strung a 6 like a bear for Baritone tuning but this is a different thing all together. While the overall girth of the neck seems close to twice what I am used to on my Strat and Schecter C1 and Omen it's really not as difficult as I had anticipated. You give some good advice here about just focusing on the strings that I am accustomed to for the first week or so. I am going to try this. Cheers! V
I have no idea why but I just bought my first 7 string guitar of Jackson JS22 today and I had absolutely no problem with getting used to it. Maybe has to with the fact that I'm somewhat great with music theory. I just love 7 strings!
Thank you for this video. It has helped me a lot with the transition. If I may add something, for tip 1 play songs that are not difficult but that have constant string change. A good example is I Am the Black Wizards by Emperor. The tremolo picking between A, D and G plus the open chords will help you adjust to your new guitar. There are lots of songs like this one around. But it happens that I love black metal. Cheers.
I picked up an Ibanez 7 string today at GC while I was waiting on my guitar to get fixed. The person before me dropped the 7th string to A and I couldn't help myself but play barred power chords (that's how you day it, right?) and I loved it. Curiousity got the best of me and I wanted to see what videos were out here. Thank you so much for this video. I'm really considering it now.
Picked my first seven string a couple weeks ago. Just a cheap schecter sgr. Plays alright though. The biggest issue I have was like you said just hanging on the b string. I'm getting better about it now but ya the first few times was all b string. Something that helped me was realizing the notes are the same as the high b. Seems obvious to me now but had some hang up on scale shapes at first.
Awesome thanks for the tips! I just got my new 7 string a few days ago and I’ve been looking for tips on starting out with it and your video has been the best one yet.
I have learned so much from Jason’s videos. He’s awesome. However, I keep hearing Macho Man Randy Savage giving me the lessons. 😄😄😄 This is not a bad thing. 🤘
I've already got a borrowed six string strung with the low 6 from a 7 string set. I gotta give it back eventually and I want a 7 to bring back the high string.
Hell yeah man, THANKS for the video. I just today ordered the Jackson Dinky JS22 7 string and I HAD butterflies til this video.( Your ESPs are gorgeous by the way) Been wanting to rock out a 7 for a while now and the time has come. I have some guidelines and tips now, so i wont be going in clueless, which the excitement has now intensified! Thanks again and be safe!
Hank Leadbelly Dude, I would love to play a Jackson 7 string! I had an old PS-4 Performer way back in the day. And I’m really glad this video was helpful to you 🤘
After having played 7 string for a long time, i've really wanted to share this trick i've learned to make 7 string guitars a lot easier to play. There are some 7 string players that tune the G string down a half step from whatever they're tuning too. In my case, i tune to Bb Standard, so i'd tune my G String down to F. This alows you to play all of your strings from the low B to the high B just like a 6 string, but with a high e for added range.
I say whatever works best for you, do it. I'm just not a fan of messing with alternate tunings (I know some are). These days, when playing my 7 string, I don't use that lowest string all of the time. Many will play the B string most of the time but will start to neglect the other strings and frets.
@@jasonstallworth i definitely get that. The tuning i was talking about definitely makes the 7 string kind of feel like a different instrument, but because of the finger positions from B to B being the exact same as a regular standard tuned 6 string guitar, the only thing that i needed to get acclimated too was incorporating the High E into my playing. I'd say if you ever do wanna mess around with other tunings to try it out through a clean amp. You'll be able to play entire chords across all 7 strings, and that's one big reason why i started playing in that tuning!
Hi Jason. Thanks for the video. Makes a lot of sense when transitioning from 6 to 7. Not in a million years did I think I would move to a 7 string guitar, until... I heard Edge of Paradise. The sound, alongside 80s type riffs, with sweep picking blew my mind, so I've bought a decent 7 String to get me started. You're absolutely right in saying that you need to put the 6 string away; in for a penny, in for a pound. Cheers.
Took me a few weeks to get used to 7 string. Was kinda like relearning guitar, but in a fun way. Now I really enjoy it and it compliments playing back and forth with 6 and 7.
Learning the Guitar Again. top outside notes to bottom outside notes make bad (and wrong) chords. I'm a thumb hanger and pinky finder. it doesn't work like that right now (first 7 string day). But on a positive "note", the variety of the E string accompaniment has added some harmony already. Glad I seen your Video, Thank you

For me, the biggest issue was dealing with the lower muddier notes while keeping clear melodies, I ended up turning my 2 string power cords into 4 string power chords... I play in drop A so I just stacked them (root, 5th, root, 5th)... Just helped make the lower chords clearer
Yeah dude that's one of the many reasons why I don't mess with down or alternate tunings. That B is plenty low enough for me. When you riff a lot, you want your notes to be tight.
@@jasonstallworth personally I like drop a just because I love the dark tone of a low open a, and then my 6 strings are standard... Before I got a 7, I was so used to drop d that I instantly tuned to drop a, one if the best discoveries was that if I ignored the a I had standard tuning back, it was like saying hello to an old friend, but I could always go back to drop style just by jumping a string. I considered a lower tuning, but I just love the tone of an open a
I absolutely want to eventually own a 7 string. Some of my favorite bands (like nevermore) use/used 'em. I personally don't think it would be that difficult to get used to it for me, but then again, i don't exactly have a ton of experience with 7 strings.
goku14139268520 I love Nevermore!!! ‘Fault of the Flesh’ is one of my fav tunes and I really admire Jeff Loomis. Saw him live a year or so ago with Arch Enemy!
I watched the video to see what I could have done differently with mine, but I pretty much followed your steps exactly. Sure is nice having a low E at the 5th fret.
@@jasonstallworth And it's also very nice having the low D to add muscle to a D chord. It just goes from there. Next guitar will be a fan fret 7 string.
I’m finally picking out a 7 string after playing since 94’. I’ve always bought guitars second hand. Trying to decide on whether or not to order a new 7 on Sweetwater or sift through the used gear. When I go used, it frees up a few dollars for another Pedal, different strings and a good strap. Great video dude 🤘🏻 I’ll learn from your headaches.
Dude I’m actually considering parting ways with mine and have been on the fence on selling it! But don’t let that detour you. Sweetwater also has used gear now so check that.
It's definitely a strange jump for some, especially for me! And to be honest, I've kinda put mine to the side lately and have been playing my 6 strings more.
Excellent tips Jason! I have a Schecter 7 string (traded the Jackson) and for me the problem was the space between the strings. After playing and practing leads on it, then going back to my 6 string was touchy because of having to adjust to closer string space.
I do. I think my only gripe about it is the higher end of the neck. It's kind of difficult to reach the low E and A strings when I'm playing around the 20 to 21st frets
With my 7 string 1 year ago the only thing that bothered me was strumming chords and getting confused about the tuning pegs I used to think I was tuning up my low E string but was actually tuning up my low B string
Yeah that’s another huge reason to play your 7 string as as 6 string, ignoring that B string so that you don’t get out of touch with playing normal chords and all
That's awesome that you made the leap to a 7!!! Man, I wanna visit South Korea someday! I have family in Thailand and they went on vacation to South Korea and loved it!

Just bought a Schecter Demon. Was looking for tips. Been playing my Ibanez for about 16 years and wanted some more deep end to give more flexibility with writing. On my 6 string even though we play metal I do a lot of writing in Am because if you do it in Em there's not really anywhere to go but up and it's really limiting in my mind.
It's actually great that you write a lot in Am because it also gives you more diversity in what you can do with those lower notes. Many write everything in the heaviest key possible, but the then every song ends up sounding the same. I hear this with countless metal bands and it's rare that I can make through an entire album of any band because of that. So you've got the right mindset.
Picked up an Ibanez UV70P Universe back in September 2020 but admit havent had much of a chance to play it being on active duty, whenever I do play it though (especially considering my style is technical death metal) I notice im usually not as accurate or precise in my playing as on my 6 string even though my favorite song to practice requires a 7 string guitar. Even after playing guitar for nearly 20 years, finally getting a 7 string is a big change for me after playing a 6 string this entire time.
Great idea. My challenge is that I have an RG7321 with what I believe is a 25.5 scale length. My B is sharp when I fret it. I need to lower the nut height and may try heavier strings. Still gonna use it tho - might just adjust the intonation to compensate.
You may want to get it professionally setup and from there, just make sure you always use the exact same gauge strings when you change strings (I've had to do this on most of my guitars)
To orientate myself on an Ibanez Universe UV777P I played Offspring's Pretty Fly for a White Guy on it by working out low register of 7 string. Pretty Fly sounds real menacing in a 7 string. But thanks for sharing I am open try out your method. Thanks dude.
I've been playing guitar since 2003 (13). Just bought my first 7 string yesterday. Last guitar I bought before this was in 2009. It was high time I evolved. Glad I found this video though. I was playing it last night trying to figure out how to add a 7th string to as many chords as possible, which is most likely going way too fast considering the only other time I'd played a 7string was back in 2007 at a guitar center for a couple minutes
Dude, I'm so glad this video helped you!! It is a change, and more of one than we probably expected! But the more time you spend with your 7, the better you'll get and it will soon become second nature to you!
My difficulty was that I had so many guitars in different tunings already... a dropC, drops, DropD, D standard, e standard and a half step down from e standard and I'm SUPER picky so I also thought I'd never find the right one. But I happened into a pawn shop that had a mid level Ibanez 7 string for $40. It didnt work at the plug so I talked them down to 25 and i wired a new jack in at home. I've not had much difficulty so far other than it makes me a TINY bit on the sloppy side, but that's improving fairly well. My issue is making those neato chord voicings like Rabbea and Ola do. I cant seem to figure those kinda chords out. Really loving these lower registers while keeping E standard. About to go drop A flat I think though.
Sam Alvey Dude you got that for super cheap!! That’s awesome! I would t encourage to to just play in standard tuning for a while and get used to the 7 string before you mess with the tunings. That B is pretty low
My struggle was relearning my spacial awareness. I learned it on a 6 string by referencing the low E, now to make it so I can play 6 or 7, and hopefully 8 and 9 in the future, I'm learning my spacial awareness from the high E since that'll always be there no matter the string count.
I actually recently started playing guitar about 6 months ago and just bought a 7 string and I guess since I'm still new it doesn't feel much different to me from my 6 string. I like that I can hit that low notes without having my guitar tuned way down and it gives me essentially a bass string to play on in conjunction with a standard riff above it. I like it so far.
I am thinking about buying a 7 string so that i can tune to cgcfgcx because my current guitar does not intonnate well that low ( even with thicker strings) and I do not want to file my nut. Our rhythm guitarist is going to be tuning to dropped c and I have been playing in dadgad over his dropped d tuning. I think having the 7 string is going to be helpful for this ( longer scale length better tuning). But I am thinking about a baritone also.
Yeah it's extremely weird! There have been many days within the past cole of years since I've had my 7 that I wished that I had not gotten it. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that you really have to spend a lot of time with it to become comfortable with it...especially for folks like us who have just playing 6 strings for decades prior.
I’m having 0 problems playing a 7 string also! Figured I couldn’t play a six string, so I decided to get a 7 string fanfret! I’m in the thick of it now! 🤪
It’s funny I felt the same way as you about the extra string. And I thought about taking it off just to practice without it too. Then add it later. I’m a drummer, been for 25 yrs but Iv always wanted to play guitar because I can write riffs in my head but can’t play them so Iv decided to learn. Why did I choose a seven. We’ll… all my favorite bands play a seven like Unearth or After the Burial. Anyways thanks for the video. It gives me some clarity and let’s me know I’m not alone on the subject. I’ll keep fucking around and hopefully I can one day write that platinum album. Thanks🤙
I've been looking at 7 strings again recently. I owned one briefly a few years ago, but it was cheap an the neck pocket was cut crooked, so I returned it. Coming back to it, I'm now trying to decide if I want to try another 7 string, or just go straight to an 8 string. I suppose time will tell.
@@jasonstallworth bought the Schecter Hellraiser C-9 because there’s quite a few Deftones stuff I wanna play - especially on their new album. Will take a while to get to grips with the 9 but lockdown is the best time to practise!

I have already been integrating the low B string into stuff I normally play. It's really cool and gives old riffs a new dynamic.
Dude, that D and G were the main strings that I was screwing up on!!
You can hear those here (scroll down to my prior albums - the recent one, Masterpeace, was 7 string):
jasonstallworth.com/music
@@jasonstallworth I know I loved my 5-string as soon as I realised I could play Slipknot (Drop B), Pantera (Drop C), Dark Tranquillity or Snot (Drop C#), Swashbuckle (D standard) AND regular E/Eb stuff without touching anything, and I just love playing bass when I want to focus on rythm & groove instead of chords.
Thanks for the link, I'll check it soon.
Jason, is it impractical to play both 6 and 7 string guitars? I’m a new 7 string player, and I feel like when I get used to 7 strings, I become sloppy on 6 strings, and vice versa.
your voice sounds like you're always about to fry scream the next word.
not a complaint. just an observation
Lol...dude I'm not sure what to say about that! I do death metal vocals so maybe that's trying to creep out when I talk!
@@jasonstallworth First off, sick video! I'm about to get my first seven string after 8 years of a six string. Also, since you said you did death metal vocals, what in the hell is it supposed to feel like in your throat. Every video I've found on it isn't very descriptive on how I should practice screaming. Tip #1 Don't play on the Low B String for a week
Tip #2 Play Full Open Chords
Tip #3 Is finally getting used to the 7 string guitar
It took a while!
Just purchased my first 7 string last night, and while I’m waiting for it to arrive I figured I’d start learning about it. So glad I stumbled upon these lessons to help smooth the learning curve, thank you.
The hardest part for playing a seven string is finding tabs and riffs to play
I actually have a playlist for 7 string lessons and tabs! Because of your comment, I will continue to add more!
ua-cam.com/video/sQ_0dqNHcLE/v-deo.html
Korn has some great stuff if you tune down a bit to A Standard
I write my own tabs for songs( not done it for a while though)

Playing everything I learned on 6 strings on my 7 made me feel like I wasted so much time learning all those chords. Then I did exactly what you said and pretended the B string wasn't there and it made ALL the difference. Now I don't even own a 6 string electric lol.
It does make a huge difference, just pretending that extra string isn't there at first. And yeah, like you said, you almost don't need a 6 string after that!
The first riff in the beginning on the 6 string sounded like classic thrash, whilst the same riff on the 7 string sounded like Amon Amarth imo. Great playing 👍
Emanuel N I love merging styles especially thrash and death!!
@@jasonstallworth best death metal songs have some thrash in them

Nice!!! 🤘
And there are still times where I'm like 'What did I do...should I have just stayed with my 6 string??'
8 string...I don't know that I see that in my future, but it's awesome to see folks that can play those !
My favorite/challenging part was figuring out the nuanced change to left and right hand positioning to keep the clarity of notes. It's also a ton of fun to drop the B to A...
I've never droptuned...that B is plenty heavy for me! yeah, that first couple of weeks is sort of a challenge for sure!
@@jasonstallworth My 7 has a Floyd so i don't do it often but that open power chord is beefier than kobe.
John Monaco Kobe 😂 that’s good stuff!
@@jasonstallworth Never tasted it but i am sure Open-A is beefier. :-)
Yes I'm thinking about going to a seven very heavily because I came out of the '80s era and for people like myself that came out of the '80s era there's so much more you can add with more range on the guitar and make everything sound so much newer and heavier
Do it…you’ll love it!! I’m all 80s as well!
Im about 5 years late. But have been playing on 6 string for about 8 years now. Got a 7 string on the way. Should arrive tomorrow afternoon. Can't wait. Been wanting one for a couple years now, just didnt feel ready. Good thing I enjoy a challenge.

I going from 6 to 7 at the moment and it's WAYYYYYYYYYYYY harder than I thought.
Dude, it does open you up to a completely different world. And there's a learning curve. But it's like anything, the more time you spend with it, the better you become and it will soon be second nature to you!
Just got my 7 string yesterday and your vid couldn't be more helpful i will be implementing these tips and i will get back to you with my progress
GeoFranker yeah dude there are definitely some pain points!! Now (over a year after having my 7), I play the 6 and 7 equally, or try to at least!
There are fanned Fret versions of these Guitars (especailly those going down to a Low G#0 w/ 10 strings etc) that have Short Treble Strings & Long Bass Strings to make it feel more at home. The Fanned fret design (that's from the Orpharion) really improves the intonation alot.
🤘
Yeah the 7 string is a beast in more than one way. To be honest, I still go back and forth on it and usually prefer my 6 string guitars!
Ive played guitar for 24 years ive never played a 7 but your video helped me realize its very doable and im looking into one
Awesome and glad this helped!
I got a 7 string yesterday I love it. Real hard to get into it but it takes time. Killer job dude.

Lol, thank you dude, appreciate that!
Damn it ! You are so right !
I got my first 7 string a few month before you released this video.
At first I was like "not using the 7th string to get used to the guitar ? what ? really ? Does he know what he's talking about ???? How am I supposed to get used to it if I don't play it ???" :)
But actually you are so right, I had to spend quite some time to play only the first 6 strings, to let my brain figure out that this extra string is not the same as the 6th string. At first I felt so confused and uncomfortable with the neck width, but that was because I was playing it as a regular 6 string.
As awkward as it sounded, that advice is gold !
Cheers !
Yeah it was tough for me to get used to that extra string so when I started playing it like a 6 string, things progressed more smoothly!
Yeah it’s easy to get a little lost at first!
the brutal chugginess of the low b string makes the 7 string guitar so awesome , its just face melting \m/ .
Yeah those string brings out some cool tones!
Kirk Gifford Dude it does make you a better overall guitarist, going back and forth!!
Yeah dude, it's definitely a transition...it almost felt like a completely new instrument when I first got mine!
Dude, I actually played rock-style guitar (with solos) for over 20 years in churches! Some in Pensacola and in Tampa.
@@jasonstallworth Yeah, but did you do it with any Choirs? Gospel-Rock is going to be a big hit.
@@RockStarOscarStern634 why? Do the often sing in Eb Db or B?

Roy Severs Jr. Man they make such awesome guitars...even their less expensive ones still play well!
Cheers! V
Really glad this helps dude!! And good luck on the 7!
I have no idea why but I just bought my first 7 string guitar of Jackson JS22 today and I had absolutely no problem with getting used to it. Maybe has to with the fact that I'm somewhat great with music theory. I just love 7 strings!
I don't imagine everyone will have trouble transitioning, but I know that many do. So I wanted to put something out there to help :)
Great video man. I have my first 7 string arriving next week so will use these tips to help me make the big change from 6-7!
Awesome man!!
Love this Teddybear. Subscribed!
Lol, thank you dude!
Cheers.
Very glad to hear this helped, and that's a great tip you gave!
I picked up an Ibanez 7 string today at GC while I was waiting on my guitar to get fixed. The person before me dropped the 7th string to A and I couldn't help myself but play barred power chords (that's how you day it, right?) and I loved it. The biggest issue I have was like you said just hanging on the b string. I'm getting better about it now but ya the first few times was all b string.
Something that helped me was realizing the notes are the same as the high b. Seems obvious to me now but had some hang up on scale shapes at first.

Thanks so much for the tips man. Going to be purchasing the Schecter Apocolypse 7 string. It's a beautiful guitar.
Oh man, I bet that's gonna be awesome to play!!
Cheers.
I like their music!!!
Took me a few weeks to get used to 7 string. Was kinda like relearning guitar, but in a fun way. Now I really enjoy it and it compliments playing back and forth with 6 and 7.
Jim Shoe It is indeed like relearning guitar! It almost feels like a completely different instrument at first!
I like this concept, keep it up man
I've been thinking about getting my first seven string. Thank you for the tips! Very helpful on what to expect.
Dude, that's great to hear!
Glad I seen your Video, Thank you
Glad this helps dude!

I’m finally picking out a 7 string after playing since 94’. I’ve always bought guitars second hand. Trying to decide on whether or not to order a new 7 on Sweetwater or sift through the used gear. @@jasonstallworth the purpose behind me wanting a 7-string is to be able to add a different flair to chord shapes.
Just discovered your channel and, man, you seem really a nice guy to hang with! :)
Excellent tips Jason! I have a Schecter 7 string (traded the Jackson) and for me the problem was the space between the strings. After playing and practing leads on it, then going back to my 6 string was touchy because of having to adjust to closer string space.
Bryan Smith Yeah dude that’s a noticeable difference with the space between strings! So you prefer the Schecter over the Jackson?
I do. I think my only gripe about it is the higher end of the neck. It's kind of difficult to reach the low E and A strings when I'm playing around the 20 to 21st frets
@@fullblastjkd09 Yeah there are some pattern I've written on my 6 in that range and I have a tough time accessing those frets on my 7
With my 7 string 1 year ago the only thing that bothered me was strumming chords and getting confused about the tuning pegs I used to think I was tuning up my low E string but was actually tuning up my low B string
Yeah that’s another huge reason to play your 7 string as as 6 string, ignoring that B string so that you don’t get out of touch with playing normal chords and all

You're cool man, tha is for the advice. I just purchased a strandberg 7 and I'm mainly a 6 string player. I really enjoy your playing to, you're very clean 🤘😁🤘
Really glad this video helped! And welcome to the 7 String family!
This was helpful. I've got my eye on an Ibanez right now.
I actually want an Ibanez 7 string, too....their wizard necks fit my hands better
@@jasonstallworth the Ibanez RG7421PB is specifically what I'm after. But they wont be back in srock until sometime in november. I play a 6 string S series right now. Trying to learn N.I.B. currently.
@@e_eulogy942 I'll have to take a look at that one!
I just started playing guitar, decided on the 7 string because I don't see the point in learning twice. Plus having the B1 there will help me develop better picking accuracy while I'm working on the basics
That's awesome that you started out on a 7! And smart too, dude!! Like you said, now you won't have to learn twice!
@@jasonstallworth yeah surprisingly not as hard as I thought it'd be compared to learning on a 6 string... And I want to eventually get an 8 string one day so I figured go all out
@@whheaattzmayne3183 For 8 string, definitely check out the collab I did with Kareem...he gives some 8 string tips after the song we play ua-cam.com/video/EuqrQaZG2vk/v-deo.html
It took me a while but you'll eventually get used to it!
You are a very funny guy, good job brother and rock on...
Thank you my friend!
@@jasonstallworth Thanks, Jason. You're right - a pro opinion might be worth it.
To orientate myself on an Ibanez Universe UV777P I played Offspring's Pretty Fly for a White Guy on it by working out low register of 7 string. Pretty Fly sounds real menacing in a 7 string. But thanks for sharing I am open try out your method. Thanks dude.
Glad this helped!!
hi Jason thanks for the vid.im planning to buy a prs se 20 mark holcomb 7 string.
🤘
🔥💣🔥 THAT into is exactly what I came for❗ 👍🤘
Awesome! Definitely check out my 7 string lessons playlist on my channel!!
Yeah it's a wider neck and more ground to cover!
Yeah I feel like that 7th string is a bit tighter sounding than a downtuned 6 string guitar
Dude, I think a 7 in standard tuning will be low enough. Any lower and you run the risk of muddy notes....just my opinion
Thank you for this video, it was a bit weird to join the 7 strings party after 30 years of playing "only" 6 😆
Keep on the good work 🤟
Yeah it's extremely weird! There have been many days within the past cole of years since I've had my 7 that I wished that I had not gotten it. If there's one thing I've learned, it's that you really have to spend a lot of time with it to become comfortable with it...especially for folks like us who have just playing 6 strings for decades prior.
I had 0 problems transitioning from a 6-string to a 7-string. Mainly because I suck at playing a guitar in general. :-D
Herr Thunder 😂 dude, never give up and keep practicing!! You WILL become better!

Thanks🤙
Yeah, the 7 was a different beast at first!
“Or you’ll be sorry”
I love ya J!!!
mollossus7 Love some Tom!!!
I’m actually considering parting ways with my 7 string soon…there will be a video on that!
I went from a 6 straight to a 9 because I was like fk it why not lol
Lol
@@jasonstallworth bought the Schecter Hellraiser C-9 because there’s quite a few Deftones stuff I wanna play - especially on their new album. Will take a while to get to grips with the 9 but lockdown is the best time to practise!
Soooo tempted to take the plunge!!
It's funny because I've actually struggled with having a 7 string since I got this thing. There have actually been times I've considered selling it (had it on the market for a while). And then there are times where I'm so glad I have it! I've got a strange relationship with my 7...
@@jasonstallworth Im looking at an NK headless 7...Never had a headless, BUT never had a 7 either LOL, so might as well go for both at the same time. Reviews seems good and it would be nice in my tight man dungeon space..Ever seen or played one? any thoughts?
@@bryscorpio Never played a headless and dude, I personally don't care for the look, but that's just me.
For a 7, I strongly recommend getting a 7 string that's as close to your favorite 6 string guitar so that it feels a little more 'close to home if that makes sense.
@@jasonstallworth I was out today deciding on a possible 7 string and ran into the new Dean Kerry King V ....well, I'm broke now with another 6 string LOL...maybe a 7 next time? This thing is so freaking metal!! No regrets!!
