Man you the best!!! I always wanted to learn microsolder. My hdmi port broke on mine 1 year ago and i just so happen to run into 1 of ur videos and it was downhill from there. Ive bought 16 used PS4s so far and successfully repaired 10. Im looking forward to doing my first APU as soon as i can afford better tools. Im working with a cheap walmart solder gun and a $10 microscope i ordered from wish. My first 2 repairs were with a magnifying glass taped to my phone camera lol. Thanks Andrew
all of your videos are extremely helpful! I replaced my first hdmi port successfully the other day thanks to your vids. thank you for sharing your knowledge
I need this done to mine. I just recently dropped my ps4 off at the local repair guy to have fixed knowing that I had this same problem. When I explained the problem and my suspension of what it could be, I was reinsured it shouldn't be a problem to repair. Well guess what? Got a phone call letting me know they replaced the hdmi port only to have the same issues and they do not have a in house person to replace the i.c. and apparently there is not a person in the whole city of Austin that can fix this problem. So I guess I'm doing it myself. Thanks for the excellent video guide! I really would love to send it to you for repair..
Thanks. You are very good at what you do and at explaining it to others. Keep it up. Thanks to you, I got a blue light of death (long version) off ebay going with the 3 washers trick only to find white light of death after that. I fixed it by watching your videos and changing the hdmi encoder. I second your comment about hot air stations. My trusty Aoyue 968A+ got the old hdmi port out (it fell out whilst taking the shield off the hdmi ic on the other side of the board lol) but could not get the board hot enough to allow for aligning the hdmi port pins with a new port. Thankfully, the old port was OK and the previous owner had given up at that stage. Cheers.
Would have been nice to capture the HDMI port testing on camera, although I suspect this is done this way intentionally so not to give away tricks of your business or because it's hard to get everything on camera AND the DMM. Glad you showed testing continuity of the video filters to the chip itself though, helped me verify my HDMI video filters as ok. I replaced my HDMI encoder chip and I now have video and sound...Many thanks for this and all your other content, you have shared and helped me and so many others, you do great things :)
always say around here, that in the USA! it's always better to buy a new one than fix an old one! because of the facilities to buy electronics! already here in Brazil! we tie with wire! we put ribbons, we stick! or we make the most infinite exotic repairs, when we have no parts! I liked the way you are perfectionist in replacing the aligned resistors etc! well professional your work!
Andrew, your video's are great. You are definitely someone who never gives up, like that ! Just had a ps4 with WLOD and flikkering black screen at random times - under microscope I saw 1 pin moved about 1mm inside, so that one needed replacement - replaced HDMI port, same problem - replaced HDMI IC, same problem - gone through your video's, measured everything again, all GOOD, so eventually concluded that the NEW HDMI IC chip was defected - replaced HDMI IC by another new one, and BOOM, working ! Satisfied, but still thinking, how could that happen ? Never seen a new defective HDMI IC chip, did you ?
Had one before now but only the one thankfully. Not bad going really in the circumstances lol :-) Really annoying though as it does leave you scratching your head for a while:-)
Andrew Paul Thinking about desoldering and soldering back the hdmi Ic's with my rework machine, which I use for reballing apu's for blod ps4's. Also Thinking about a test method to test new hdmi ic's, suspicious hdmi Ic on boards and desoldered hdmi ic's. When I desolder and solder back a hdmi Ic with my rework machine, i can make a video, if you like. I scratched my head actually all the time yesterday, when It did not work after replacing the Ic for the first time. Left my girlfriends house on sunday and said: I need to get back to work, I need to fix It.
hi, sorry you can help my please, whats the name of 4 chip down chip mn86471a... , in the video you speak about this in 27:03 -27:19...thank you adrew paul
Thanks so much, you have helped me yet again! This is educational but I enjoy watching so much. I appreciate that you show the whole process rather than editing everything to make it more appealing to the masses. Keep the great content coming and thanks from Australia.
Hi i have a ps4 white light problem and need advice. So i traded a faulty xbox one original for a supposed faulty ps4 original from a person that fixes consoles that wanted the Xbox for spares. So on the day i got home with the ps4 i used my ps3 cables to power it on and it miraculously powered on which surprised me as the controller was connected properly using the usb cable. But i saw the screen flash black then back to the home screen which i didn't know what is was then it did it once more and was displaying perfectly. After about 5 mins of waiting for it too show some errors or switching off because i did not expect it to work i plugged in my usb speakers to the other usb port on the front while the controller was plugged in. That was when the screen went black instantly. I didn't know what happened and pressed the eject button and a copy of GTA 5 came out which means the console was still powered on. When i plug the controller and speakers in on my ps3 super slim at the same time is says too many devices drawing power something like that. So i think it drew too much power on the ps4 and caused a wlod on the ps4. Im trying to do a home repair with minimal tools and if you could give me some idea of what the usb ports could have shorted eg a transistor or fuses or something. It still powers on and everything but that was the defining factor i think that contributed to the white light of death. Any recommendations would help as ive watched a lot of UA-cam videos and most are the ic chip or some transistor . Its a original ps4 with wlod 1116A
Great video! Keep on going mate! Now I'm going to fix PS4 that used to have some artifacts (screen goes red, and customer reporting also some sound problems which I didn't noticed) while playing games. What I think it can be faulty HDMI encoder IC. Hopefully the GPU is OK.
nice video ... if 4 chokes are dead after power surge, are there any chances that IC survived ? can i just bypass chokes to test IC and then replace them if IC is OK ? i have this ps4 that died after power surge ... it was completly dead and after i have replaced power supply with ATX PS and now it has WLOD, cheking those chokes like you did shows all 4 chokes are dead ...
Hello. I'm starting to learn, to repair things. I have a ps4 1116a, which does not give an image. I did as you explained, but even so, there is still no picture. I noticed that near the hdmi encoder, as you said, it has 4 components, all in a row. They seem to me to be capacitors and resistors, but I don't know. Can you tell if this affects anything, in not giving an image? The components are the ones you mentioned.
First testing from the pins to the alternates had me confused as I couldn’t really see what he was doing and my motherboard is completely different from that one. Would really like to test everything before I buy a new chip. Also what are you putting on the chip before removing it. And what temperatures are best for removing the chip. Mine didn’t have a cover over the chip and it’s directly behind the port on the same side.
hi Andrew, i replace the IC and now i have a black screen but with sound, any suggesrtion?? i found the error, is the pin 6, I gaging in 20:02 and pin 6 does not give continuity, bypass or replacement? excuse my english but im from mexico
So you have no continuity across the filter? Check it from the top of the filter to the bottom - if no continuity replace the filter. If there is, then check it from IC to filter and filter to via. When you find which side the break is run the appropriate link wire. Cheers.
Hello there, would you be able to help me with something please, I think my PS4 has a board problem, when I insert a game or dvd the green goes or fuzzy with green dots, I have tried different hdmi cables factory reset etc but no luck
Ill be doing this on my ps3 this weekend. I like the method you used for soldering the new chip on. Most seem to put the chip on bare traces(no solder), then put a big glob of solder or solder paste to one side & drag solder all the way around. May work but it looks easier in vids & its easy to mess up doing it that way imo.
have you ever had a ps4 never worked on where you changed hdmi port and hdmi ic but still no video signal, and ps4 doesn't beep properly to enter safe mode? but the system seems to turn on properly with the white light? just no safe mode with hiding down power button, just shuts off
Hi, sorry to bother you under an old video. I have two main questions: 1. If my PS4 as a WLOD problem, can I be sure it's a Encoder IC problem? 2. What heat gun are you using? How many Watt can it emit? Thank you!
Could there be another issue to the no signal problem other than hdmi port and hdmi encoder ic chip? (How likely it's another issue other than this two?)
Im having flickering image to no image, then it comes back then artifact then its goes to normal. Then backs with the cycle. Do you think i have the same problem with hdmi pansonic ic?
Do you have another video in which I can see where do you place the pins of the Voltmeter it is difficult to see with your hands covering the area. Thanks a lot.
please tell me in the bunch of hdmi is where the two resistor track is from the third diode for continuity can rings and shows 22 ohms is this normal ?vipal also sveneti and 22 ohms ?there is soprotivlenie should be sab 001 was replaced with the controller Panasonic video was the white snow and the reddish then all sound disappeared'm sorry for my English bad
Hello Andrew, I have a WLOD ps3 with no sceen output, safe mode not possible. Replaced the HDMI IC chip and after that the screen output was a noisy red. And when I moved the hdmi cable (good one) the screen went intermittently from red to nothing, so I also replaced the HDMI port. Now the screen output is constantly noisy red. Tested the 4 video filters next to the HDMI IC and they are all good. HDMI port pinout is good (checked your other video). Also the connection of the 8 points (video filter points) with top and bottom mobo are good. What do you think is the problem here ?
+Andrew Paul It was a brand new one actually. But I do have a scrap board with a good one on it. Can desolder that one and use it for this board. Can't stand this, it has not been fixed. After diner I will continue and finish this ps4. Tomorrow the customer flies back home in the US. I soldered on the HDMI with drag soldering with JBC soldering iron on 365C. Need to find out test points first. Besides thanks a lot for your very fast response ! :-)
+Andrew Paul Replaced the HDMI IC chip, by a HDMI IC chip I desoldered from a scrap board and ....... again no screen output. Somehow this HDMI chip was not good, I hope and suppose. Tomorrow I will take again, a new HDMI IC chip and post the results. I like to mention that I desolder the HDMI IC chip somehow different, then how you do it. I use low melt solder to lower the melting point from 217C to 150C, then use hot air to desolder the IC chip. I think it is a little bit more safe. Do not want to damage the surrounding components.
+ProConsoles Soldered in a new HDMI IC and still the same problem. Pin 13 of HDMI connector does not have a low resistence. All connections from end of HDMI cable to the test points are good, video filters are good. Nothing of the soldered connections have shorts. Still WLOD without screen output.
Hello Sir, I have PS4 slim, HDMI port is ok. but there is no image on the tv. i dissembled it, is there any other reason , other than This Chip? its number is MN864729
quick question i actually replaced my internal fan awhile back and about a 6 weeks later i fell asleep watching you tube on console woke and put it in sleep mode when i got home and tried turn it on sometime it starts to run and then shuts off other times it cuts on normally but i get no picture or sound any idea what might be causing this.
I was using a vga to hdmi convertor on my ps4 to use with my old monitor, coverter uses a 5 v adaptor but i accidentally plugged in 9v one, after that my PlayStation was being detacted on my tv as giving a signal but after a while it had no signal at all, could it be that its just the hdmi port itself and not the ic chip?
Awesome video!! just passing trough this can I ask what was the air flow and heat you use aswell as the flux I'm practicing with other boards before doing this but my flow and flux aren't helping.
Can you set the chip with hot air first from keeping it from moving once you have it set in place. I have to use my scope to place chip first, eye's not that great anymore. then I drag solder each side, still takes along time for me but I can do it .
Wazzup bro , My beloved 1st generation ps3 slim having a problem, it stuck at 480p at HDMI. I resolder the PS3 HDMI port and it not fix the problem, do you think it's the panasonic MN8647091 hdmi transmitter is the problem? it can't recognize 720p 1080i and 1080p stuck at 480p only. AV multi out is functioning normal.
+playstation2bigs It might be worth doing a drag soldering job on the IC to see if you can get rid of a cold joint or two but if it's anything like the MN86471A found in the PS4 then dropping of the HD resolutions indicate an internal fault and will require a replacement of the IC. Cheers.
so where does one get a chip, trying to prove myself to people very confident i have the skills to replace it i just need to know a reliable source to get one
Looks like you have schematics And board view for The PS4 I've been looking for yours how old do I come across them ? ? I know they fall out for truck lol but how can I come across? them
Hi, Sadly I don't, they're securely tucked away in Sony's repair centres. I wish we did have them though - it'd make repairing the more tricky issues a lot, lot easier!
Nice vid mate, I have question: My ps4 goes on into a white light, so no image. When i go into safe mode, it gives a screen for 1 second and after that the screen goes black again. I have replaced the hdmi port, but no succes. Do you think it might be the Retimer on this board? Thanks in advance
Hi, It's an RF shield - not vitally important in most situations - I've seen many machines with them left off over the years and they've been fine. As always though if you can put it back, do.
Use solder paste to tin the pads instead of regular solder. It lays down better, and most of the time you can lay the chip on it, heat and it lays down a nice filet.
hi Andrew , i removed accidentally 2 of the 4 caps (ferrite diode) near the panasonic chip when i putted the heat gun , they are damaged, so can i make a direct link between the 2 point of them?
I just replaced the hdmi port, witch didnt seem broken to me, but i did it anyway. That didnt work and its not picking up on the TV. Is that an encoder problem?
21:45 Need to trace the filters before changing the ic just to be safe! U may be getting rid of a good ic for nothing if there's no continuity on your filters.
Hello, I have CUH-1003A PS4, UK Day one edition. I want to order a replacement hdmi IC but I'm not sure of which Panasonic model I should order. Also, can you please tell me how you reinstalled the heat sink on top of the ic chip
You'll need a Panasonic MN86471A for a 1003A. The metal shield can be left off if you're struggling , but to place it back you'll need to re-solder it back using a fairly large iron tip and flux.
Hi Andrew, I have replaced a HDMI transmitter chip, but for some reason only getting Sound output on the HDMI.... would you have any idea what would be next suspect? HDMI port looks fine, so i haven't replaced that yet.....
Sound but no image is typically down to a bad encoder, however as you've just changed it I'd be more inclined to suspect a loose / bridged pin. Give them all the 'nudge' test with a tweezer blade and see if you can get any to move and resolder them if they do. If you've any shorts / bridges between pins then these will need to be removed. If that all looks good, check the EMI filters to ensure they're within spec.
@@AndrewPaul i did check all the pins, pretty sure there is no bridging or loose pins though i will check again once more just to be damn well certain ! I continuity tested the 4 filters, they all came out fine.... just like how you did it in this video. Pretty stumped to be honest, the sounds on but no ones home ! lol.
+Chesley McDaniel It's self-regulating so I have no control over it. The iron calculates the needed temperature by measuring the heat draw across the tip when touched to place where the joint is required - so I don't know what temperature it's using. Cheers.
+Chesley McDaniel No probs - however, my TP9 tip has blown this last week and I'm waiting for a replacement so I'm back using my old solder station for now for fine work. To drag solder effectively that station has to be set to 485 Celsius.
+Andrew Paul Thank you for that. I wouldn't have expected it would need to be that hot. Now I see why I was having trouble. My iron only reaches 450 Celsius but I was afraid to turn it up that much out of fear that it might fry the HDMI chip. Have been having hell with my ps4, pulled a pad where the Panasonic HDMI chip mounts (due to having a much to large hot air gun and being afraid of burning up the MOBO), so I attached a very small jumper wire to the proper circuit but still have WLOD. Now after several attempts, I broke off a leg on the Panasonic chip where I had the jumper wire.
Andrew, Wonderful video. I am hoping you might give me an idea as to the next step for me. I replaced a damaged HDMI Port and all the pins test well to the IC and to the test connection points on the board. When I put it all back together I got the WLOD. I went into safe mode and found that the unit displays well in 480P , but it doesn't want to work with any higher resolution. Does this still sound like an encoder chip problem to you? I will replace it if needed, I just didn't want to order one in before I exhaust all options. Thank you for any input.
@@AndrewPaul Hello Andrew, I replaced the HDMI IC and it still will not give me anything above 480P. I double-checked everything and I am lost as to where to go next. Any Ideas where I should look would be appreciated.
@@AndrewPaul I got it from esourceparts.ca . I get many parts from them and never had any trouble in the past. Do you think it may be a faulty chip? Is there a test I can do to confirm the chip is faulty. Again, I appreciate your input.
Hello from France! Thank you for your videos, they are very helpful! However, I messed up a bit trying to replace the Panasonic chip. Before i even got to that part, I removed a component when I took off the lid/heatsink. I don't know the value of that component (a resistor no doubt), and I wish I could send you a picture, that is, if you have the time to help me out. In any case, thank you again for sharing your experience with such clarity!
Hi Andrew, I've had the exact same issue as appears in your video although the tech shop i left it in to be fixed with had it for 3 weeks said its beyond repair. Do you do repairs in London or have any contacts for repair in London?
Hi Ciaran, I'm based in West Yorkshire but I accept mail-in repairs from all across the UK and EU. If you want to send your machine in for inspection / quote then drop me an email to ytandrewpaul@outlook.com and we can arrange that for you. Many thanks.
+Ken Lerdahl in short mate there isn't any - well there will be but they're safely tucked away inside Sony's repair centre vaults. This is all from my own work and deduction. Cheers.
great videos indeed very helpful..thx i wonder u can help here with with a issue..im in repair service...yesterday after another hdmi replacement of the hdmi ic..my console is not powering at all no beep too..everything seems prety clean..i removed the ic completely still no power..pls advice thanks
hello sir, where i could buy a good one encoder chip? because i bought one in china thru online its not working after i put the chip the video does not appear. pls. helpme sir...
Is it necessary to put the HDMI IC shield back once I'm finished working on the IC, does it actually have any major role there. I didn't notice anywhere in your videos you putting it back. Thanks
i have got one ps4 with distorted display i resoldered the hdmi pins. now its a bit batter but still little distortion after few seconds but nothing happens when move the cable. distortion is tiny bit after few seconds with a little distorted sound. should i just follow everything from start to end or just change the hdmi i?. i have a doner board on me to get hdmi ic from.
+TaaRiiFrp Check to ensure the HDMI comb isn't out of shape - they can warp slightly which can cause intermittent issues like you describe. To be sure you can check connectivity of each pin with a multimeter. if all looks good and you've got a spare IC then give it a try and see what happens :)
+Andrew Paul thanks for replying mate, i actually follow all steps but hdmi comb as i don't have the diagram for that and eventually changed the hdmi ic from a doner board and it all works fine now. can you provide the hdmi comb's ways? and how do we differentiate the if it is a graphics card problem or hdmi ic problem as both problems resulted in corrupt and distorted display?
+TaaRiiFrp The comb is just the plastic tab inside the HDMI port - you can't change this on it's own - you'd have to change the port but happily you don't have to do that now. It's very easy to differentiate between an APU failure and a HDMI Encoder IC issue. An encoder IC issue will cause one or a combination of static, an over-saturation of one particular colour, the loss of a particular resolution, or several resolutions / blank screen with no audio, solid red/green/blue screen with no audio etc. APU failure will cause the console to display as normal however the image will start to drop detail and cause glyphs / malformed polygons etc. This will get worse very quickly before the machine would lock / power off.
Hi Andrew, thanks for all your videos, I have to say they are really useful. I'm facing an issue with my PS4 Pro console, when I turn on the console it says Too Many Devices connected. Ethernet Port is dead, Usb Ports are dead as well, Sony suggested to reset the console, and now I have a beautiful reseted console without being able to sync the controllers. Do you know Is there a way to sync the controllers in a hacked/cracked way so I can Sync them and use the console. Or do you know which chip needs to be replaced based on your experiencie?, I want to try to fix it by my self, since I was told that the board must be replaced, so! Thanks in advance!
I dont know if i recieve a faulty replacement, but before theres was continuity betwen in the 4 filters, i mean each pin of them. So i took off the ic and the short was gone. So i solder the replacement and theres continuity in the 3rd filter. Thats normal? Can you tell me if i have a faulty replacement? Thanks
Sounds like you either have a small bridge between the pins (they can bridge to the rear and are hard to spot without a scope) or a faulty replacement.
Hello Andrew. Very nice and educational video. I have a question. My PS4 boots and i get a white light too. Thing is, my TV does not recognize the device. It's like i don't have any device connected at all. But my ps4 boots normally. And i know this because i have it connected with optical output to my speaker setup, and i hear the booting sounds and the music from the menu just fine. So the ps4 is open and operational, but i get no signal at all. I opened it and hdmi port seemed fine. The encoder chip was replaced by a techinician at the end of April, but seems like the problem showed up again. Could it be that the encoder chip failed again? Could it be that the connection didn't last and probably just need some more soldering? The technician closed the encoder chip with the metallic cover so i have to open this first to check it out. And for this, i need to buy the equipment you use (heat gun mostly as i have the other stuff). Would i be sure that it is encoder chip's fault and not something else? I have no problem trying to fix it, but i want to make sure that this repeat in the future and i have a faulty encoder chip every 1 and half month. PS. Sorry for the long post. Hope you can help me. Of fource i checked my ps4 with multiple monitors and cables, problem still persists. Just to clear things out :)
It could be a faulty Encoder or a bad port / lead. the fact you still have audio is weird. I'm not saying the Encoder cannot fail in this manner (it can) but I've seen it literally just the once out of who knows how many of these I've done by now. They normally fail entirely with the loss of both picture and audio. Much more likely will either be a bad HDMI lead or a loose / pushed back pin in the HDMI port. Give the port a visual check and see if any pins are pushed back / out or are sitting proud of the centre plastic comb. I'd imagine the original repair will be under some form of guarantee? Will the shop not take a look and confirm the issue for you if you ask them?
Andrew Paul About the first paragraph, is it possible that the audio transmitted via optical output is processed through a different chip on the board? And the ic encoder chip is only responsible for the audio output of hdmi? The shop does not accept my ps4 for guarantee since I tried to open it. Why would I open it if it worked correctly in the first place? Seems like something went wrong with their repair. Can you explain what exactly do you mean by hdmi lead? Thank you for your time.
Ah OK - Optical audio comes from Southbridge so that explains that. If the port still appears physically OK then I'd guess it's another failed encoder. If you haven't already, change the HDMI lead when you repair it again as it could be a lead issue which is causing the chip to fail.
Hello Andrew! Thanks a lot for this video first of all! But what I would like to know is it necessary to put back the metal clip and how do you put it back?
hi Andrew Love your Videos. I have the famous WLOD, replaced the HDMI chip TWICE and still no joy, I have managed to have another look at my PS4 mainboard , and to my surprise I see that I have an smd component missing. The missing component is located above the HDMI chip on the top right-hand corner. it the second smd component if you looking form the extreme right-hand side just above the HDMI chip. I would like to know what component it is resistor/cap/diode, and the value of the component. Please would you check up on a donor board so that I can get the components or at least the type and value for replacement. Looking forward for your response Many Thanks ash
+Gonzalo Bautista Garcia When you lift the IC check the PCB on right hand side with the ports facing you. You'll see a common trace connecting two pins - 8&9 if I remember correctly but check that using the above. Cheers.
Of course you could do that but really it's not worth the time checking mate - the HDMI out circuit is fairly simple and unless there's been a massive surge like a lightening bolt hit where further checks would be advised, checking the basics as shown has always been enough to tell for me and has never let me down so far. Cheers.
Andrew theme is that it is not clear. I mean if we can verify some semiconductor level, some short circuit or resistance measurement that tells us that the IC is damaged. To prevent change without any warranty. Thank you
+Gonzalo Bautista Garcia The thing is is that they fail in all kinds of ways - there's no hard and fast measurement which will reliably tell you that this chip had failed - the quick checks you can do in this video I find are enough to diagnose the issue reliably every time. Cheers.
When removing I accidently blew off a component. It's to left then toward middle center of IC pins. Can you please identify. Can't find it anywhere. Thanks
Hey man, my ps4 was working fine today but in the middle of playing a game, the screen went black but the system was still on. I couldn't get a signal anymore and tried a different hdmi in 2 other TV's and it didn't recognize that there was a signal at all. My computer also plugged into the same wall socket doesn't show video now either. Is there a way to fix the ps4's video signal, it still turns on and shows the white light but no video
+GuitarKid218 Hi, yes sounds like a bad one. If it's done both your computer and your PS4 then it sounds like a rather nasty power surge. I'd get the wall socket checked by an electrician to be sure it's not localised to that one socket - always best to be safe rather than sorry in these instances, especially when dealing with mains voltages. Anyway - as far as the PS4 goes it's probably frazzled the HDMI Encoder IC or part of the circuit which it controls. If you're not familiar with troubleshooting these things then it's probably going to be a bit tricky and would probably be best suited to a pro console technician who knows a bit about component-level repair. Good luck!
Hi matey, are you in Leeds by any chance? And do you still do these repairs? I’m pretty sure the ic chip needs replacing on mine. Is this something you can do? Cheers
Hey, keep up the good work! Do you think it would be possible to post the HDMI pinout without using red on green(maybe blue)? I'm colorblind and wasn't able to see anything.
First of all thank u for your help. Sadly i have another doubt. Checking on the internet for the Panasonic chip MN86471A i found out that there are lots of models with various prices of the same chip. May you tell me whats the difference ? Quality of the component? it seem strange because every chip is sold by panasonic. Of course im not an expert , thanks for your support.
It's just re-sellers trying to maximise profits on the parts as seems to be common these days sadly so prices naturally fluctuate wildly. Go for the cheapest reliably rated seller you can find.
Hi Niccolò Im from Italy too. I would to do the same repair on my old ps3 slim but i'm a noo so I need some advices. Could you help me? If yes, could you share an email address / honagout to have a chat someday? Thanks a lot
Hi Andrew, i have tried to do this myself but i have managed to lift two of the pads, do you have an alternative pinout diagram for these.. cheers. dave
But my problem is my ps4's blue light stays on. No white light or picture. So would replacing the encoder child is the problem and if not what else could the problem be?
If you've got a constant pulsing blue light HDMI isn't your problem. Pray it's APU and a reball / reflow will sort it because if not you'll probably never find the cause within reasonable means.
Amazing video as usual Andrew! Do you have a diagram of where to check the continuity of each hdmi pin to the various places on the board please, I cant see where you test each one on the board in the video?
Im pretty new to this, have been doing small repairs here and there, and have practised a bit on other boards ive had lying around. Decided to bring it to my ps4, and Im really struggling to remove my IC. The max temp of my hot air station is 450 degrees. Could this be the problem? Ive not had an issue removing anything before this.
Andrew Paul I figured it out, I was just being a bit scared to use a higher air flow. Went ahead with the repair yesterday on a console that was just displaying noise y "snow" patterns. Now the console isn't displaying anything. I don't see any bridges on any of the legs, and the pads looked fine upon removal. Recon the new IC is dead? Also, I tested some of the legs on my multi meter in continuity mode, and they do have a connection, but they're not bridged from what I see. Is this normal? Sorry for the questions, thanks for your time.
Hi Andrew, I'm new to repairing but I've taken on the challenge of repairing a PS4 original, I found (SAB-001 model). Tested the HDMI pins and pins 1-12 (all the data pins) are shorting to ground. Is this normal? Everything else around it looks fine. The IC encoder side had some sticky residue on it so is this likely a bad IC? Thank you so much for the video! It's been amazingly useful! Keep up the excellent explanations!
Dude, remember me? So I seem to still be having the problem but it hardly ever happens during game play since I changed out the thermal grease but it does still randomly happen... I noticed that if I move the ps4 while its plugged in and powered on, it almost always gets the WLOD causing it to freeze so I think there is some kind of short going on because if i squeeze on the right side of the ps4 it freezes it instantly every time and I get the WLOD. What do you think the problem is?
I purchased a new HDMI port but I haven't replaced it yet because I want to be sure of the problem since the symptoms kind of strange compared to others out there.
I had a feeling it could be that but at the same time i wondered if it was a short or bad connection... I guess i will have to do a little more investigating. i noticed if i moved the hdmi it would short out too if i tapped it just a little

Hi Andrew, I have a ps4. I can play it for ours no issues. Next day I want to play say f1 game it will randomly loose av leaving a solid white light. controller buttons wont do anything. I have to pull the mains cord to get it working again. it checks the hd then restarts with the warning of not cycling down properly then is fine for the rest of the evening. any ideas Stu.
+Andrew Paul Cheers! Thanks for the tips and all your great repair videos. Maybe I'll come back asking what could be wrong when I've tried everything ;)
Thanks for the tip, Stevie! Since I wrote my first comment I've replaced the HDMI port and HDMI Encoder. Still no picture. All the legs I've soldered looks great and have good connection, no loose legs, no shorts between legs, but still no picture. Although I haven't tried what you said and measure pin 4 on the HDMI port to ground. I'll try that tomorrow. BUT, today when everything was finished I tested it. No picture, tried safe mode (holding for the 2:nd beep), still no picture. Then I just left it with WLOD. Turned it off and on again and I got the PS logo and a blue screen with a lot of text in different language I think and some pictures of what the Dualshock 4 buttons do. Then the picture just disappeard and I haven't managed to get a picture again. I didn't touch anyting I just left it booting on my desk, sitting back watching. Thing to keep in mind! I'm using a PC monitor for testing so I can't hear no sound for the moment. The maximum resolution is something like 1600x1200 so could that be a problem getting a picture even in safe mode (480p)? I should be able to get some picture in safe mode, right? I don't have a controller so I'm just testing it with the power button on the console. Would I be able to do someting different to test with a controller?
Have you tested continuity from the upper part of the HDMI pins to all relevant points? Test the system on a TV to make sure too :) Sounds like at least one of your solder connections is not quite right. Do you have a microscope?
Thank you and congratulations on the successful repair :-)
I need this done to mine. I just recently dropped my ps4 off at the local repair guy to have fixed knowing that I had this same problem. When I explained the problem and my suspension of what it could be, I was reinsured it shouldn't be a problem to repair. Well guess what? Got a phone call letting me know they replaced the hdmi port only to have the same issues and they do not have a in house person to replace the i.c. and apparently there is not a person in the whole city of Austin that can fix this problem. So I guess I'm doing it myself. Thanks for the excellent video guide! I really would love to send it to you for repair..
love the idea of soldering long pins or needles to the tester tips
Just had a ps4 with WLOD and flikkering black screen at random times
- under microscope I saw 1 pin moved about 1mm inside, so that one needed replacement
- replaced HDMI port, same problem
- replaced HDMI IC, same problem
- gone through your video's, measured everything again, all GOOD, so eventually concluded that the NEW HDMI IC chip was defected
- replaced HDMI IC by another new one, and BOOM, working !
Satisfied, but still thinking, how could that happen ? Never seen a new defective HDMI IC chip, did you ?
Had one before now but only the one thankfully. Not bad going really in the circumstances lol :-)
Really annoying though as it does leave you scratching your head for a while:-)
Andrew Paul Thinking about desoldering and soldering back the hdmi Ic's with my rework machine, which I use for reballing apu's for blod ps4's.
Left my girlfriends house on sunday and said: I need to get back to work, I need to fix It.
its very helpful to have such a detailed tutorial, without your video I wouldn't have found anything concerning my problem. Keep it going :D
Nicely done! Finally I can realize which is the problem with my PS4.
hi, sorry you can help my please, whats the name of 4 chip down chip mn86471a... , in the video you speak about this in 27:03 -27:19...thank you adrew paul
Thanks for showing this. Now I know I don't have the tools or the patience for this. I'll leave this repair up to the professionals.
Fantastic job done highly confidently. Excellent teaching as well. Good on you. Thanks.
Thank you :-)
Your videos are really helpful explains alot how to repair and check if any damage
you make it look so easy! took me a few hours to solder the new IC chip but was a success. thank you for this great video!
Hi
I want to ask you did
Need a microscope to solder the new chip ?
It certainly helps, but it's not a definite requirement.

Excellent video mate, I've just learnt so much from this 47 minutes. I've got just the board here to try all this out on too. Thanks again
You're welcome and good luck!
Howd it go?
nice video ... if 4 chokes are dead after power surge, are there any chances that IC survived ? can i just bypass chokes to test IC and then replace them if IC is OK ? i have this ps4 that died after power surge ... it was completly dead and after i have replaced power supply with ATX PS and now it has WLOD, cheking those chokes like you did shows all 4 chokes are dead ...
could you also tell where you place the black pin and red pin of the voltmeter when testing the Chip and also when testing the Port.
when testing continuity it doesn't matter.
Hello! I would like to know if you replaced back the metal panel/heatsink(don't know if it was?) over the chip
Hi, does anyone know where i can get my hands on that metal plate 13:00
what about the reading on the caps near the hdmi ic ?
hi Andrew, i replace the IC and now i have a black screen but with sound, any suggesrtion??
i found the error, is the pin 6, I gaging in 20:02 and pin 6 does not give continuity, bypass or replacement? excuse my english but im from mexico
So you have no continuity across the filter? Check it from the top of the filter to the bottom - if no continuity replace the filter. If there is, then check it from IC to filter and filter to via. When you find which side the break is run the appropriate link wire. Cheers.
thank you very mucho you are agenius, video and sound ok
Hello there, would you be able to help me with something please, I think my PS4 has a board problem, when I insert a game or dvd the green goes or fuzzy with green dots, I have tried different hdmi cables factory reset etc but no luck
Ill be doing this on my ps3 this weekend. I like the method you used for soldering the new chip on. Most seem to put the chip on bare traces(no solder), then put a big glob of solder or solder paste to one side & drag solder all the way around. May work but it looks easier in vids & its easy to mess up doing it that way imo.
have you ever had a ps4 never worked on where you changed hdmi port and hdmi ic but still no video signal, and ps4 doesn't beep properly to enter safe mode? but the system seems to turn on properly with the white light? just no safe mode with hiding down power button, just shuts off
Thanks for this video!!!!! I successfully diagnosed and replaced the IC chip in one of ours!
Hi, sorry to bother you under an old video. I have two main questions:
1. If my PS4 as a WLOD problem, can I be sure it's a Encoder IC problem?
2. What heat gun are you using? How many Watt can it emit?
Thank you!
real top marks for the way you run through the fault finding process .,very interesting
Cheers mate.
what is that goop he uses on the motherboard im gonna have to get some?
Could there be another issue to the no signal problem other than hdmi port and hdmi encoder ic chip? (How likely it's another issue other than this two?)
Im having flickering image to no image, then it comes back then artifact then its goes to normal. Then backs with the cycle.
Do you think i have the same problem with hdmi pansonic ic?
Do you have another video in which I can see where do you place the pins of the Voltmeter it is difficult to see with your hands covering the area. Thanks a lot.
I really like this kind of videos, I find them very interesting and entertaining
Are the IC encoder pinout the same on the PS3 slim?
please tell me in the bunch of hdmi is where the two resistor track is from the third diode for continuity can rings and shows 22 ohms is this normal ?vipal also sveneti and 22 ohms ?there is soprotivlenie should be sab 001 was replaced with the controller Panasonic video was the white snow and the reddish then all sound disappeared'm sorry for my English bad
+ProConsoles Was the IC a known good part? Is it possible to test it on another board?
+Andrew Paul It was a brand new one actually. But I do have a scrap board with a good one on it. Can desolder that one and use it for this board. Can't stand this, it has not been fixed. After diner I will continue and finish this ps4. Tomorrow the customer flies back home in the US. I soldered on the HDMI with drag soldering with JBC soldering iron on 365C. Need to find out test points first. Besides thanks a lot for your very fast response ! :-)
No problem, and please let me know how you go :)
Hello Sir, I have PS4 slim, HDMI port is ok. but there is no image on the tv. i dissembled it, is there any other reason , other than This Chip? its number is MN864729
hey i hav a question if this was blown wud it cause a green tint on the screen? if i change hdmi inputs i get a green tint on my screen
quick question i actually replaced my internal fan awhile back and about a 6 weeks later i fell asleep watching you tube on console woke and put it in sleep mode when i got home and tried turn it on sometime it starts to run and then shuts off other times it cuts on normally but i get no picture or sound any idea what might be causing this.
Hy,one of small smd from 2 which are in front of the IC was missing,I try to replace with another but not working, any information?
+George Momich Hi George - indeed you can - this is how I do it now I've got the better quality hot air station.
Thanks Andrew. Hope you can do a PS3 HDMI repair and pin out soon,
Hi. Can i use the MN86471A instead of MN864729? Are those two compatibles with each other? Thanks in advance
One question
My PS4 when running the screen is black console light White and on screen unknown input
+playstation2bigs Hi mate - yes that's probably your issue.
+Andrew Paul do you think it's a cold solder joint? or replace the whole i.c. ?
+playstation2bigs It might be worth doing a drag soldering job on the IC to see if you can get rid of a cold joint or two but if it's anything like the MN86471A found in the PS4 then dropping of the HD resolutions indicate an internal fault and will require a replacement of the IC. Cheers.
Thank you very much Andrew more power
+playstation2bigs That's what happend to my PS4 3 weeks ago!
mofos wanted 200$ to fix it. I rather pay 400 for a new one with 3 years warranty.
so where does one get a chip, trying to prove myself to people very confident i have the skills to replace it i just need to know a reliable source to get one
What you set temperature air hot at 🤔
480C @ 100l/min
Looks like you have schematics And board view for The PS4 I've been looking for yours how old do I come across them ? ? I know they fall out for truck lol but how can I come across? them
Hi,
Sadly I don't, they're securely tucked away in Sony's repair centres. I wish we did have them though - it'd make repairing the more tricky issues a lot, lot easier!
Andrew Paul Thanks for the reply Andrew For Years I wish I had them Yes you're right it would make repair so much easier.. By the way good videos 😀👍
Nice vid mate,
I have question: My ps4 goes on into a white light, so no image. When i go into safe mode, it gives a screen for 1 second and after that the screen goes black again.
I have replaced the hdmi port, but no succes. Do you think it might be the Retimer on this board? Thanks in advance
Do you know if that metal plate above the video chip is important? because mine came without it, it was used
Hi,
It's an RF shield - not vitally important in most situations - I've seen many machines with them left off over the years and they've been fine. As always though if you can put it back, do.
@@AndrewPaul I was worried that the ps4 would not work because of the lack of that thing. Thanks for answering me :)
+Lena-Payette -et-cie Hi, if you can't source replacements then yes you can just bridge them with wire. Cheers.
+Lena-Payette -et-cie Hi, if you can't source replacements then yes you can just bridge them with wire. Cheers.
Pretty stumped to be honest, the sounds on but no ones home ! lol.
@@AndrewPaul Thanks, was one of the EMI Filters! Brilliant!
What temperature do you have your soldering iron set to for applying the leaded solder to the pads?
+Chesley McDaniel It's self-regulating so I have no control over it. The iron calculates the needed temperature by measuring the heat draw across the tip when touched to place where the joint is required - so I don't know what temperature it's using. Cheers.
+Andrew Paul Oh okay, fancy! :) Thanks anyways.
Hi Rick, yes mate - that'll be an encoder IC failure.
@@AndrewPaul Thank you for the input, I will replace the IC and give you an update.
@@AndrewPaul Hello Andrew, I replaced the HDMI IC and it still will not give me anything above 480P. I double-checked everything and I am lost as to where to go next. Any Ideas where I should look would be appreciated.
Where did the new chip come from?
@@AndrewPaul I got it from esourceparts.ca . I get many parts from them and never had any trouble in the past. Do you think it may be a faulty chip? Is there a test I can do to confirm the chip is faulty. Again, I appreciate your input.
hello I had a console without panasonic and partia with white light I installed the ic and now the blue light remains flashing intermintente

Congratulations on the successful repair and happy gaming :-)
Hello from France! Thank you for your videos, they are very helpful! However, I messed up a bit trying to replace the Panasonic chip. Before i even got to that part, I removed a component when I took off the lid/heatsink. I don't know the value of that component (a resistor no doubt), and I wish I could send you a picture, that is, if you have the time to help me out. In any case, thank you again for sharing your experience with such clarity!
Au final, tu as réussi à la ressusciter la console ?
Hi Andrew, I've had the exact same issue as appears in your video although the tech shop i left it in to be fixed with had it for 3 weeks said its beyond repair. Do you do repairs in London or have any contacts for repair in London?

Awesome work Andy thanks for the advice given yesterday its much appreciated
No problem mate, cheers.
No worries I've sent you another message on eBay about that us console if you could take a look when you get sec it would be appreciated.
Where did you dig up the board schematics for the PS4? We've had luck finding PS3, but not ps4
+Ken Lerdahl in short mate there isn't any - well there will be but they're safely tucked away inside Sony's repair centre vaults. This is all from my own work and deduction. Cheers.
great videos indeed very helpful..thx
i wonder u can help here with with a issue..im in repair service...yesterday after another hdmi replacement of the hdmi ic..my console is not powering at all no beep too..everything seems prety clean..i removed the ic completely still no power..pls advice thanks
hello sir, where i could buy a good one encoder chip? because i bought one in china thru online its not working after i put the chip the video does not appear. pls. helpme sir...
Is it necessary to put the HDMI IC shield back once I'm finished working on the IC, does it actually have any major role there. I didn't notice anywhere in your videos you putting it back.
Thanks
17:05 he says "it's gonna be refitted" so yeah , put it back on
i have got one ps4 with distorted display i resoldered the hdmi pins. now its a bit batter but still little distortion after few seconds but nothing happens when move the cable. distortion is tiny bit after few seconds with a little distorted sound. should i just follow everything from start to end or just change the hdmi i?. i have a doner board on me to get hdmi ic from.
+Andrew Paul appreciate it, cheers mate.
I desolder it again and clean it. Still there (in the ic) so I guess its a faulty one...
I see. When you are saying hdmi lead, you mean the hdmi cable?
Hello Andrew! Thanks a lot for this video first of all! But what I would like to know is it necessary to put back the metal clip and how do you put it back?
Where to find those at good price?
hi Andrew
Love your Videos.
Looking forward for your response
Many Thanks
ash
What Pines aré shortcircuit ¿. Before to change the ic . In the vídeo aré not defined. Thanks
+Gonzalo Bautista Garcia When you lift the IC check the PCB on right hand side with the ports facing you. You'll see a common trace connecting two pins - 8&9 if I remember correctly but check that using the above. Cheers.
I meant that measures should detect Ohms to determine that you have bad MNxxxxx integrated circuit?
Before lifting plate
Cheers.
Thank You, just where could I buy an encoder ic?
When removing I accidently blew off a component. It's to left then toward middle center of IC pins. Can you please identify. Can't find it anywhere. Thanks
Have you a photo please?
I can do one where do I send?
Upload it to imgur.com and paste the link in below. Cheers.
If you start at top left of IC and go down 13 pins that's it.
I think those are little inductors IIRC - not currently near any boards to check at the moment.
Also do you think it was some sort of the surge because it smelled like something had heated up and started melting, plastic maybe
Good luck!
Do u need a heat gun to do this?
Andrew QUICK861 How do I set the temperature
Hi matey, are you in Leeds by any chance? And do you still do these repairs? I’m pretty sure the ic chip needs replacing on mine.
Is this something you can do?
Cheers
Hi,
I'm close to Leeds - around 25 minutes away. Drop me an email to ytandrewpaul@outlook.com and we can sort something out. Cheers.
Andrew Paul nice one mate. I’m in Lincoln but I’m from garforth and I come back to Leeds a few times a year. I’ll email you tonight 👍😃
I accept mail-in repairs from across the country bud so if you want to mail it up then you're more than welcome :)
Hey, keep up the good work! Do you think it would be possible to post the HDMI pinout without using red on green(maybe blue)? I'm colorblind and wasn't able to see anything.
Sure thing mate I'll see what I can do :-)
Is this procedure similar if I want to change the same chip from my ps3?
On the MN864709 like those in the SS? Then yes, absolutely.
Thank you so much!!
You're welcome. :-)
Hi Niccolò Im from Italy too. I would to do the same repair on my old ps3 slim but i'm a noo so I need some advices. Could you help me? If yes, could you share an email address / honagout to have a chat someday? Thanks a lot
Hi Andrew,
i have tried to do this myself but i have managed to lift two of the pads, do you have an alternative pinout diagram for these..
cheers.
dave
Which pins are you missing bud? Either pin numbers or a photo of your board will do mate. Cheers.
Sure thing mate:

Thank you Andrew, that is much appreciated :)
what heat temperature and air flow do you use?
Typically 490C @ 100l/min
Im pretty new to this, have been doing small repairs here and there, and have practised a bit on other boards ive had lying around. Decided to bring it to my ps4, and Im really struggling to remove my IC. The max temp of my hot air station is 450 degrees. Could this be the problem? Ive not had an issue removing anything before this.
450C should be more than enough to be fair. The likelihood is the calibration of the air station temperature probe - which station are you using?
Andrew Paul I figured it out, I was just being a bit scared to use a higher air flow. Went ahead with the repair yesterday on a console that was just displaying noise y "snow" patterns. Now the console isn't displaying anything. I don't see any bridges on any of the legs, and the pads looked fine upon removal. Recon the new IC is dead? Also, I tested some of the legs on my multi meter in continuity mode, and they do have a connection, but they're not bridged from what I see. Is this normal? Sorry for the questions, thanks for your time.
Hi Andrew,
I'm new to repairing but I've taken on the challenge of repairing a PS4 original, I found (SAB-001 model).
Squeezing the right side would suggest APU issues.

Probably early start of APU troubles - seen a few like this. Reball should sort. Cheers :-)
+Andrew Paul Thanks for the quick response Andrew. Is it expensive?
cheers Stu.
Nah not really mate. Expect to pay between £60-80 in the UK - just make sure they definitely reball and don't reflow it. Cheers.
Any recommendations? your self preferably
ps i bought it knowing it was opened. they said to remove a build up of dust.
cheers stu.
I have a similar problem but the PS4 outputs audio but no picture. The HDMI port looked fine so could it be the HDMI transmitter in my case?
Hi, indeed it could - the Encoder IC is responsible for muxing audio and video signals so this can be a sign of a failing Encoder.
+Andrew Paul Cheers! Thanks for the tips and all your great repair videos. Maybe I'll come back asking what could be wrong when I've tried everything ;)
Check to see if pin 4 of the HDMI is short to ground (Usually the case of the IC short with no picture but have sound)
Test the system on a TV to make sure too :)
Sounds like at least one of your solder connections is not quite right. Do you have a microscope?
At which level you blow out the hot air ?
