Dynamic duo The Neptunes talk coming from a Virginia high school to Songwriters Hall of Fame

- Music duo Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo, known professionally as The Neptunes, were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame on Thursday. The two are responsible for smash hits sung by Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears and Jay-Z. Anthony Mason catches up with the team in their recording studio just outside of Miami.

The Neptunes are the Phineas and Ferb of hip-hop/R&B. Pharrell is the Phineas, the frontman and face of the duo. Chad is the Ferb, a man of action not words who can break out any skill at the drop of the hat.

So glad Chad came for the interview. Dude might be the actual mastermind of The Neptunes. No discredit to Pharrell. He's a genius.
I'm the underdog, behind the scenes type of dude, so that's always who I root for. And I've always been intrigued by Chad. As much as I dig Pharrell and his work, I love The Neptunes as a unit so much better, and I get souped up when there's a new Neptunes or N.E.R.D project.
@Melissa Unicorn I kinda feel you, but nah, we don't have to downgrade one to uplift the other. To say Pharrell "was never the talented one between the two of them" is untrue. Frankly, it sounds like hate lol. Pharrell's talent is undeniable. He's also charismatic and intriguing, whereas Chad is more low-key.
Chad is an icon and inspiration for many Filipino music artists and producers who will make up the next generation. I am glad he is finally getting his national shine!

One of the main reasons i started producing was cus there was a Filipino guy named chad on the neptunes. Knowing a filipino in america can make it big in the hiphop scene makes me proud to be from there. I know for a fact everything that the neptunes is, is cuz of chad. Pharell said it himself and he means that and look at chad just brush it off classy move man! Salamat!

These two understood groove!! Chords that give that new feeling, out of space without sounding scifi. Inspire me to this day, song like frontin, with the bridge in contrast to the rest of the song gives me that "what will happen tomorrow feeling" The song doesn't end, it continues to a new place . Then JT's album justified. I wish to have motivated friends that I could grow the visions with.
The Neptunes are amazing. My favorite works of theirs that I listen to quite often are on SWV’s New Beginning.

As a student in Hampton U (1999-2004) I was there when they pretty much dominated everything, and had the privilege of being inside Hovercraft Studios in VA Beach when they won their first MTV award. I'll never forget the very first album I heard from the Neptune's when I was a toddler. And that album was N.E.R.D. in search of (2001) my older brother used to play all the time back then. Now most of Pharrell's music and the Neptune's music are on my playlist along with a whole bunch of artists from the 2000s era. I'm just glad I was born in the era of Good music.

Chad is definitely a real producer, and probably fits more into the underground electronic music scene in terms of his remain in the background and out of the lime light type of persona :) Happy to see these guys get inducted they deserve it

epakerd Pharrell is equally as talented most definitely! he’s just extroverted, so it’s a good mesh. Most producers like chad who experiment with synths and electronics like he does are more techie types and prefer to remain silent creating tracks. Pharrell knows his partner is like that because he kept reinforcing in the interview that chad has been a driving force behind a lot of the tracks he performs on over the years.
