This album was written before Timberlake was introduced to the project. What became Justified was originally offered to Michael Jackson, according to Pharell MJ turned it down as being too commercial for what he wanted to work with at the time and specifically asked Pharell to ask Justin Timberlake to go solo with this album. Justin also said directly that the reason he finally had the confidence to go solo was when Michael called him directly to tell him that he was ready to go for it and that the Pharell project was the right door for him. They both said if it wasn’t for MJ this may never have happened. Pharrell said on couple of interviews that Michael phoned into the studio during the first set of recording sessions, on two occasions, to ask how Justin was getting on with the vocals and check up on them all. Essentially this album had massive Michael Jackson blessings and influence from conceptualisation right up to structure and completion. One night, the day after his single debuted we were in the club and Justin, Pharrell, Travis Barker, Jerry OConnel, Ted from Hey Dude and a bunch of famous people were there. Justin had a dance off with some blonde chick, Pharrell was lit and was dancing on a giant speaker and fell off. Jerry OConnel showed up in a taxi cab, by himself walked in ordered two giant mugs of beer, stood up against the wall, chugged two beers and left. Oh! and Nicole Eggert was crawling around drunk outside looking for her shoe. The early 2000’s, the good ol days.

Especially in hindsight after we already know what Pharrell would evolve and grow to become in the music industry. It's so crazy. NEVER STOP HUSTLING ya'll. It's achievable.
"Every time it rained, we had to stop recording and wait for the rain to pass" Had Prince been there, the rain would've make it to the album! RIP
I was 22 year old in beauty school in LA. We always went to a club called Joseph’s.
And after we all went to Mel's on sunset Regardless if you were at Miyagi's, Saddle Ranch, Keyclub, Roxi it was all love back then.
Damn I miss the early 2k !
@@WeylandLabs Omg!!!!seriously, We we’re probably there at the same time. those were the good ol Motorola razor von Dutch days! 😂😭😭😭🙌
Good ol days when there wasn’t a cell phone with a camera in sight and moments like those are just a memory.
@@melissap9416 Von Dutch trucker hats rhinestone dew rags and the ladies wearing them juicy couture sweat pants and us gents wearing bedazzled Ed hardy v neck shirt with the frosted tips hair cuts. ( Yes ) I was that guy 🤣
We you where either at Dennys or at Mel's after. Celebs had private after parties at the Viper Room. And if one of them came to Mel's it was an instant invite to a party in the H-Hills, if you had style and dressed nice wasn't with a ton of "special people" we know what that means. Lol
The culture was fun but kinda douche if I look back 🤣
@@corey1022 Nah we had our Tmobile sidekicks bro 🤣
I still listen to this album like all the time it's a modern classic
It's so amazing to me to watch not only Justin but Pharell in action. I was born and raised in Virginia Beach, and as a kid I remember hearing about the waves he was making so often. He did a LOT for our community and still does to this day. I never really grasped how incredible he is though until watching this. I heard this album so much as a kid, my mom blasted this constantly and I never even knew it was Pharell and Hugo that were fundamental to this masterpiece. It's beautiful.
Absolute Classic. A timeless album for sure.
I just love seeing this
side of everyone.
Everything about this is so good 💥🤗 I had no idea this footage existed .
*I forgot how AMAZING/ICONIC this album was. This was the BEST era of Justin's music. Thank you for sharing this video xx*
This album is so f**king iconic. And the fact it was captured being made is such a gift. I just wish cry me a river was captured also.
Video's like this the reason UA-cam exists

10:48 I love when they listen and jam to the finished product, makes my heart happy 😊
What a TEAM my friends.... high connection baby!! the base of my teenage music years.... groovy days... love that moments!!
Tnx 4 so many guys!!!
Gawd I used to watch these original videos religiously back in the early 2000’s. I’m glad they put them together. Thanks for sharing.
I’m watching this 22 years after its release and I’m still so in awe of its magic! Watching the creative process is amazing!!! JT is the GOAT!
I remember '03 Rock your body coming out. I landed a great job and came out of dire poverty for good. It was spring and I was so happy and busy. Now I'm studying for my own songs coming out. I still love that song!
I could cry right now. This is LEGENDARY
Loved the chemistry between everyone . They were productive af
What a time capsule this is.
@@AndrewKamenMusic everything was so much simpler that time
I just watched this for the early 2000s vibes, I miss those days. Sounds so cliche but man music was fire. Simpler times with no social media.
Amen to that!
@@stanvanillo9831 I hear what you're saying but @ketchyshubby and I mean the whole Instagram, Tik-Tok, FB social media behavior everyone is addicted to. We didn't have all that back then and it was nice :)
life is literally depressing as fuck seeing what amazing things people do with their life, what they have, wealthy families. I came from unemployed bottom of the barrel bloodline.. new tech and social media is great for people doing well off and rely on it for money, but for average people middle to lower class I sure miss the times without all this shit
@@stanvanillo9831 That literally makes no sense. You know the internet existed without social media and UA-cam right?
@@stanvanillo9831 Yeah, without UA-cam back then I'd buy every dvd and vhs I could find and get all the extra footage I could. I remember buying this the day it came out, Nov 5 2002.
This video is a hidden gem, thanks for posting. Love it.
Yo this album is a classic with the The Neptunes and Timbaland producing on it crazy!!! Came out when I was like 12 and I’m still listing to it till this day. Amazing!!!
One of the best videos on UA-cam hands down, gotta revisit this every now and then. Super inspirational and motivating. They were really making magic in that studio. Justified in my top 5 albums ever fr
Absolutely love this.... great for people to see the actual work and levels of creativity that go into making timeless records... Just the whole studio vibe and the creative process giving me chills lol. love how Pharrel is so passionate about his craft both him and Chad were such a formidable and inspiring force back then to get a small glimpse into their music making process is priceless...
It’s cool to see JT during this time as a solo artist. This was the time around at the start of him breaking free of his NSYNC persona and finally becoming his own artist.
Man, it's so cool to see these things, everything starts somewhere and you don't know how far it can get!
💯
Justin is a walking instrument with that voice. Cool to see how he makes it seems so effortless !
THIS IS EPIC :) i can watch this all day every day...so many creatives in one spot..ideas bouncing ....thx for capturing this and editing man :D hope netflix picks up this as a documentary or something
I am pulling out this CD now! Yes, CD.
I have the original cd too ... the best!!!!!!!!
#PhysicalMediaForever
Good idea, even in the year 2025!💃🏾
Pharrell is referencing every step of the way...... wow, Timberlake was blessed.
@Jay Boogie They didn't "hold his hand", he was the voice and the vision. They all created together as equals.
@Jay Boogie big lies
@Jay Boogie i was agreeing with you lol
@@jas_bataillenope a lot of these songs were already made before JT Pharrell him self said a lot of these tracks were for Michael Jackson
The drums on "Like I love you" are dope.😎
Man this Album gave me so much pride being a Virginian. There has never been a time when something produced by The Neptunes or Timbaland wasn’t in my headphones.
Same.
Up in Fairfax. 😍😁
Don't forget Missy, D'Angelo, Ella, Pusha T, etc!

Man, I just melt when I can witness the production of something incredible. Especially when it comes to music.
My goodness man the way that Last Night beat was hittin at 17:28 is outta this world #neptunes
@@AndrewKamenMusic Yeahh! Now's version is still hard but I would've kept it just like that
Everybody knew Justin was going solo. But, nobody knew hooking up with the Neptunes and Timbaland was going to solidify his career. You can tell in this clip this album was going to be a success. And it was. Can't believe this is over 20 years ago. Time flies!
This justified album is straight up car journey music, on repeat 🔁 x3
i know everybody loves to say things are underrated but i truly believe this is underrated...when u think JT u think future sex love sounds and his newer shit...this shit gets slipped under the radar now...i remember me and my dad drove from nyc to atl the summer this yr came out...classic album!
Pharrell, Chad and Shay were a HUGEEEEE inspiration for me as a kid. ❤

Love this doc!!! I recorded in the B room back in the day with Andrew! He is a really cool guy and great engineer!!!!!! VA baby!!!!!
What a pleasure to watch this, just goosebumps all over hearing those legendary tunes materialize for the first time in that studio. The funny thing is, at the time, i was just some 22yo knowitall with all these preconceived ideas about Justin Timberlake, since i only knew him vaguely from being from NSync. So at the time i felt some instinctive resistance to anything he would bring out, but then this album came out, and its quality just immediately broke you down to your knees and respect the genius that was the collaboration between Chad, Pharell and Justin. Most legendary album from the zeros? Could very well be. Great vid!
I remember this album took many people who were not Pop music fans by storm. Awesome work!
omg this is gold. I love to learn about these working processes and then you can truly appreciate the artistry as well as the art. those songs are so refreshing and classic, i'd love them a long time. thank you for making them.
Thank you soooo much for this Andrew! PLEASE!!! Upload more Footage, this was incredible 👏👏👏👏👏👏
I need that Señorita orchestral immediately.....
💯
Choir must do good too tho😜
im a musician and i really love this record. didnt know i would be cheesing the whole time. this was the same vibe as listening to the album. like watching the special features of a fav film. really cool to see them making the album
Major thanks for the nostalgia trip, I felt 17 again for 21 mins
This so inspiring to watch! Sometimes the initial idea creation is more exciting than the finished product
Bro!!!!!!!! This is so clean!!!
man i was 11 when this came out and i had my mom get it for me soon as it did! i think i had heard "like i love you" and just fell in love immediately. looking back this album was phenomenal.
this album is a masterpiece !
dont know what you guys did,
but this is truly masterpiece of all time !!
"Last night" is my favourite song of the album !
Sure Pharrell is in the light and Chad is behind the curtain
growing up it is crazy to think about how this album crossed and was succusful in both black radio and pop radio
This is what you call everybody music. Made by everybody, for everybody and liked by everybody.
