The big difference between Maggie and the other students is authenticity and confidence in her uniqueness. I felt like the other artist were copying a style that they feel they relate to whereas Maggie was creating from what she is. That's the difference between artist who make it big and the ones who don't. People can feel and hear the difference. That's why everyone had the same reaction as Pharrell did when listening to Maggie.
LOL...Artists who make it big are usually the ones with the most promotion behind them, especially these days. The most unique artists tend to stay underground and many throughout history have died before any popularity was attained.

this might be too late to reply but i remember maggie said she was trying to balance looking like she enjoys her own music but not too much lol. she would've bopped harder but she was holding back.
@@jurinaissance yesss I love that first moment when Pharrell hears her vocals come in and his eyebrows go up just a bit like 'damn'. And then progressively his face becomes more reflective of the sentiment of 'this is ridiculously good'.
You can tell Pharrell saw a kindred spirit in Maggie. He was genuinely listening and interested in everything she said in her intro and his feedback was more his experience as a listener of her song than a producer/singer-songwriter. You knew he was a fan of hers when he asked her her name again at the end.
@@aceaquigg8141 I don't know her, but what I can tell is she's in her own world and you'll either join her there or go do something else and she'll be fine with it. I felt her music the most. A little Joni...but today!
The comments about the other students being ashamed/embarrassed or put down are really clueless. I've been in a college like this and the pure talents usually are the most supportive of other students. Everyone is proud of them. Maybe there is some jealousy but I never felt this way. One of my friend won a silver medal at a Chopin concert in NY when she was 16, as a self-taught pianist, and might very well be the most impressive improviser I've ever heard, and is on her way to have a career as a songwriter. I was just always so happy to be her friend and her drummer! Very weird output, thinking that you get embarrassed because one of your colleagues have such talent. Some people are jealous, but it's the minority. Then again some talent have some ego issues. I would say honestly this game is a game of wisdom and mind, it's much more mental, you put students with the same capacity, the difference is 80% in the attitude and 20% in the life they had before. It's not easy. I also wish that talent who grew later in life would be more acclaimed. It's extremely rare to be that gifted, but the gift is in the mind and the ability to focus and work at such a level at a young age.
the music business is different than usual business. people aren't the competition, they're opportunities (to get gigs, sessions, plugs, new acquaintances, and to just vibe and play with)
Make no mistake, the first three artists are very solid. Maggie is just on another level, but it's not the kind you get to by just working harder or even talent, in my opinion. She went through a lot of soul searching and a variety of experiences before hitting on that sound (and that song), which appears to have happened very organically. There's a great episode of the podcast "Song Exploder" in which she talks about it. - One other thing that I might mention that's worth noticing is that the first three artists all talked about what they wanted to represent to the world, whereas Maggie talked about personal experience, spirituality, and music. Her song was expressing something deep and real. While the others likely were attempting to do the same, the focus on where it comes from makes all of the difference.
@@jb123abc I mean anything counts, the point of the comment is that there is no true arbitrary rule. If the fire of the feeling is still ignited then it’s still good, or also you can talk in retrospect about how something shaped you.

That nod and side eye to the teacher at 21:21 kills me every damn time. Props to that teacher for recognising her potential too and giving her the stage here.
Girl is smart. It not only shows in her abstract lyricism, and instincts with the beats. She knows how to sell herself with the story then takes a quick glance at his nonverbal cues when listening to the song and starts bobbing her head. That's the ultimate sign of confidence when selling yourself. With a strong product backing you up, its the smartest thing to do in that situation. Best wishes to these artists.
Maggie just being her absolute self. She is just oh so natural and authentic. She is loved for who she is with no pretence. She had produced two original folk albums before taking this college course. Totally knows how to put her unique music into each and every one of her tracks. Her first two albums are wonderfully authentic and beautiful too.
I love how Maggie stopped looking for approval and vibed to her own music with confidence. The breakup she describes is something I have experienced, even the cutting of the hair and finding my own voice.
Pharrell's reaction demonstrated the moment when music can unexpectedly move you emotionally. Amazing to see, especially given how much music this man has heard in his lifetime as an artist and a producer. Maggie Rogers is the real deal. Good luck to her on her journey.
How have I only just come across this 6 years later. I never knew this is how Maggie started out. Pharell can feel he's listening to something special when she starts singing .... and then when the beats drops, he's just landed on Mars ... absolute gold by Maggie and she's so humble
I think its that these moments are the ones we always hear about after an artist gets big, right moment right people right time. Its never ever been caught on film this way. Captivates me every time seeing the raw reactions of two musically inclined people. The luck of fame is fascinating.
Who don't want to receive a criticism from one of the best producers/singers/rappers of the world?? He won 14 grammys working with big artists...he really KNOWS music
Maggie’s song is personal, she explained the state of her life while she wrote it and explained how some of the samples were from nature. So when the lyrics kick in, Pharrel is already painting a mental picture of Maggie hiking in alaska trying to move past an old relationship....as she gains mental distance and confidence the beat kicks in.....He said it in a different interview but pharrel was trying to decide if she was just really good at describing her song or if it was a good song. Turns out its both.
Cafune had some growing to do. At this it feels like thay were just at the precipice of their style and flow but, maybe, a part of them wanted to cling to something familiar. However, Tek It is something special.
This is amazing. First of all, Maggie's music was really, really good. And second, Pharell is right in that we all have something about us that is unique and like no other, and this is called true authenticity. I feel like humans will find happiness when they find their purpose, which is in turn found by being your authentic self. But it's so hard to get there because we all put up so many blocks that are barriers to our authenticity. So much so that we one day find that even we no longer know who we are anymore. The goal is to dissolve those barriers like Maggie has done. Just look at her smile while she is listening to her work, and finds contentment.
I agree for the most part but I think it's misguided to think there's going to be some point in your life where you achieve enough or find the right thing which will make you happy. Because real, lasting happiness isn't something you can get from doing something or from getting something. It really is an outlook thing. All in your mind and the way you see the wold from moment to moment. If happiness is what you're looking for, start being happy today. Too many people get caught up planning to be happy in the future after they achieve X or do Z.
Be Cool That's a really great point, thank for sharing! I agree, happiness is at the end of the day an outlook. Therefore we all have it in us right now, at this moment, to be completely happy. But there is also something to be said for finding your purpose, living it, and finding contentment in that as well. :)
Wish more people like Pharrell would go to Community Colleges. I know schools like NYU are more recognized but there are some very underrated creative individuals at CC’s who have great things to to offer as well. They just didn’t have the same opportunities as kids who attend schools such as NYU.
The Ohio players after making it big went back to Dayton Ohio to teach at different Dayton public school music programs and raised an entire new generation of funk musicians leading to Dayton being named the epicenter of funk. This was a huge influence on early west coast hip hop. Check out heatwave, slave, sun, and zapp… all products of the Ohio players giving back to their community

I liked Saba Jenga's music but she just needs to learn how edit her music so it doesn't seem overly produced. You know what they say, "sometimes less is more"... side note, Maggie please! don't stop making music, your singer song writing is amazing.
Maggie was very transparent when she talked about her music pre listen and that same transparency showed in her music. She didn’t look like someone who really cared about whats cool or what ppl think and thats why her music was so well received. Anybody can appreciate honest, genuine music.
@@joshua9448 Agree. But, jealousy can be very healthy and positive, if the focus of that feeling is not geared towards another individual, rather used as a tool to learn from and motivate oneself. Regret is a word for quitters. You can never stop being, a student of the game.
What Pharrell says about fusion is absolutely true in all of art. Cooking, watercolors, video games, puppetry, and anything else you can think of: To integrate fusions that haven't ever been seen before is to give a gift to the world. I look forward to seeing more!
i like how the most unassuming student had the most impactful music (aside from the neckbone chain). give me substance over style every day of the week
Yeah, noticed the neck bone chain but that too shows her unique take -- sweet nature girl softness vs the hard reality of a dead animal neckbone. Which is kinda how nature is...sweet and savage.
It’s not about style > substance or substance > style. When you have stylish Pharrell Williams in the room as well it’s just disrespectful to undermine how artists dress. If they want to be assuming that’s fine, if they want to be unassuming that’s also fine. But don’t shame or praise someone for wearing X outfit. That’s not what it’s about
I come back to this video all the time just for the pureness that is Maggie Rogers authenticity while Pharrell reacts to her song! Such an incredible moment to see
The first group Cafune: the first song sounded similar to songs we have heard. The portion after the cut was more unique and you could tell Pharrell liked that part better. I like it better and like the snare pattern. Saba Jenga: Pharrell was definitely feeling the beat cause it was layered. I think she falls into the singing/rapping trend that is too common. I agree that it sounds like a cool freestyle, not a conceptual song. Lyrically she is dope. Maggie Rogers: As soon as he heard the baseline and her voice his eyes perked up and he was already making an arrangement in his head with extra drums and adlibs etc. The song already has that Pharrell feel. He like it's already fire I can make it a hit...Pharrell is a musical genius
When maggie showed up i thought she was just another student but then when her song is playing i was like "wait.... i've heard this on spotify, wait..." then i realized she is famous now lol
I imagine everytime Pharell looks sideways to his left, giving this eye to someone, he is looking at his manager or something trying to eyeball him "This shit is gonna be gold, wtf!"
He's looking at the class professor. The look is " you know if it was just me and you we'd have already played that back like 10 times and get a load of her tappin her toe"
Two excruciating things I have had to endure many times are: 1. Sitting in a room with several people (usually a+r's), all listening to your music, looking into the distance, gently tapping thighs on crossed legs, concluding with a pause at the end for momentary reflection before someone saying, yeah, I like it. Or, what else have you got? And 2. Listening to someone else's music in the same position, but because you make music, you're expected to drop some knowledge. Which is fine when it's great. Coz it's easy to be effusive when critique is not needed. It's when you really aren't feeling it, that it becomes tricky. Coz you don't want to deflate this person that must believe in what they've presented, but you still have to make some comment coz they're waiting. Awful. Peace.
I feel a little bit sorry for the other performers in the class, but they were probably as blown away as the rest of the world. And it’s just such incredible music. Singular. That really is the word.
The first performers, Cafune, have actually been somewhat successful and are currently touring. They have a song on spotify with over 100 million plays.
Just rewatched this. I’m crying for some reason. The combination of the beautiful spiritual music, and the moment where two artists get to share music egos and everything aside.
I knew Maggie Rogers would be big... but it's crazy to see how big she already got since this video. This girl just played Coachella and has been performing on TV and releasing amazing music and videos to accompany them. She's a fantastic writer and musician.
I think my favorite part is when Pharrell doesn't understand where Maggie's story is going yet and he thinks the professor is being dismissive to her folk music roots, so he immediately cuts him off to be like "boomchika boomchika can be awesome too".
That chord progression in the chorus leaves so much unresolved tension until the next measure. You can see Pharrel react to the third chord in the progression like whoah this is brilliant.
What a great place we are finally getting to, in our culture, where two people, with completely different backgrounds, can communicate so deeply and profoundly. It's a beautiful thing.. to watch the interplay of expressions on both faces, the realization of true art, etc. And I hate to say it, but I hope we can continue this progress and we don't have it "trumped" out of existence by coarse, unrefined and vulgar people, with nothing but greed and racist ideas to think about. We must continue this kind of mutual respect for cultures and unique individuals.
If you are inferring that I should listen to and give my respect to greedy, racist, coarse, unrefined and vulgar people, then yeah--I have no time for them. And I certainly have no vote for them, if they are trying to rise to power. At that point, it is time to take a stand.
21:21 the look to his assistant is priceless, he legit wants to laugh, cry, scream & dance at the same time. This song is incredible and I must say as a beat maker myself I'm optimistic about the next generation of real music, 21:48 the moment pharrell wanted to jump on the remix..

The big difference between Maggie and the other students is authenticity and confidence in her uniqueness. I felt like the other artist were copying a style that they feel they relate to whereas Maggie was creating from what she is. That's the difference between artist who make it big and the ones who don't. People can feel and hear the difference. That's why everyone had the same reaction as Pharrell did when listening to Maggie.
well said
I think it was the harmonies and vocals.
@HammerBann Yeah, but there is a difference between inspiration and imitation.
LOL...Artists who make it big are usually the ones with the most promotion behind them, especially these days. The most unique artists tend to stay underground and many throughout history have died before any popularity was attained.

Pharrell's reaction to Maggie Rogers's track is priceless. Just pure awesome.
right....
Almost looks like he got emotional for the first 30-60 seconds.
You can tell Pharrell saw a kindred spirit in Maggie. He was genuinely listening and interested in everything she said in her intro and his feedback was more his experience as a listener of her song than a producer/singer-songwriter. You knew he was a fan of hers when he asked her her name again at the end.

Pharrell smelling that grammy nomination is a big mood
It's extremely rare to be that gifted, but the gift is in the mind and the ability to focus and work at such a level at a young age.
the music business is different than usual business. people aren't the competition, they're opportunities (to get gigs, sessions, plugs, new acquaintances, and to just vibe and play with)
Amen....
People who write these long comments do not know music
@@greatworkouttips lol what?? Writing a long comment means you don’t “know music”? Lol where is the correlation?
Thank you!
Can we use past experiences in life to write about ? Or does it only count when it's an experience now in the present moment ?
@@jb123abc I mean anything counts, the point of the comment is that there is no true arbitrary rule. If the fire of the feeling is still ignited then it’s still good, or also you can talk in retrospect about how something shaped you.

She's just being herself.
D Man-G your imagining your own truth. She liked her own music cause she was proud and not cause she’s selling a product.

I couldn't have said it any better!!!

8 years later and pharrell's reaction is exactly how i feel every time i listen to alaska. so insanely good and her new music is amazing too.
Two excruciating things I have had to endure many times are:
Awful. Peace.
Can't fake that initial reaction. Genuine as it gets.

Give him credit, Bob Power (the professor) has produced some of the best ever hip hop records. I don’t think he was being submissive.
You heard his intro of Maggie. Definitely not dismissive. Professor Bob, saved her for last, for a reason.
I think he was just clarifying that he personally isn’t dismissive of any thing, not that he thinks the professor was.
He wasn't being submissive, he was trying to say she's more than just folk music.
