hello friends! quick announcement: starting with this video onwards, for the first time ever, i am officially going to start putting up a NEW VIDEO EVERY WEEK! every tuesday evening for the forseeable future, there will be a new cozy rep vid :) it will be kind of an experiment at first / something i've wanted to do for a while. not every video will be a long documentary-style deep dive like i normally do; maybe one of those videos a month, but the rest will be, for now, me trying out a bunch of different stuff. fun experimentation! at this point in my journey on youtube, the channel is, for me, nothing more than a place for fun creative expression. a little art project. so for the first time ever, come back every tuesday evening for a new vid! hope you'll stick around for the ride and thank you for everyone who's rocked with me this far.
My mum inexplicably thought they were from Finland. to this day we have no idea why, but it's turned into a decades long joke where she exclaims "well good for them, small town Finnish boys getting out and seeing the world!"
Several coincidences I picked up on last year between Panic! and Killers (after seeing the latter live) that I think are interesting (some which you've alluded to in the video). Their lead singlers are both are vegas natives, are mormon, essentially have the same first name, and their respective major breakout singles are very theatrical in nature and tell a story of a man finding out that their partner has cheated on them and chronicles how they process the event
@@vvx600 hey man, respect your opinion, but I wasn’t trying to compare who’s better here. Just trying to say that both lead singers have some similar stories here
Explaining old band feuds and rumors like this to kids makes me feel like an old soldier explaining the outbreak of a world war to his grandkids sometimes...
I can see the Killers drummer being the cool one. I met him when I worked at Guitar Center. I believe he was the drum manager at GC Vegas before they got signed. He stopped in to check out our store on the way back to Vegas, after they recorded the first album. Dude was super chill and really humble. Definitely deserves the success he got.
27:17 "All those bands" "influenced by each other" Referring to Fall Out Boy is crazy knowing that when Infinity On High came out, it had R&B and Orchestral elements. I wonder if he realized how not mainstream they actually were with their genre, since the lead singer turned into a blue-eyed soul singer on Folie á Deux, mixing the genres even further from their "emo/pop-punk" roots.
I checked after he brought them up just to see if I knew any songs. I think believe was the only one I recognized but that opening riff was definitely unmistakable
edit: to answer your question as a vegas native and someone who lived in utah for a time, vegas has a big mormon culture. considered “the melting pot”, a majority of residents in vegas are from california and utah; however, we also have a good amount of people from illinois… been a subscriber for a year now and i’m just as happy for this upload as i was binging last year! whatever pace you choose is fine, but please keep it coming! ❤ happy halloween!!
On the 'Internet Savvy' status, from what I recall: My Chemical Romance since the very very early days of their band kept an ongoing Blog and kept it updated at least until the release of 3 Cheers. There is an internet archive of it all - it was mainly updated by Ray with the occasional post by Gerard. They kept posting things like 'UNLEASH THE BATS' and such. I don't know if it was Eyeball Records that made them make it for their street team or if they had it going before - though - but I recall they posted like one of their first concerts recorded by their then drummer Matt Pelissier's mom from the concert hall which is up on UA-cam in, like, 180p and that was way, way back in like 2002.
that's true, but i do think pete was more 'internet savvy' in the sense that he used social media not only to promote his band but also to interact with fans which ultimately led him to discover ryan ross and panic!. also i feel like he started the whole 'confessional blog' trend as a rockstar by releasing poetry of livejournal and things which no members of mcr ever did
just wanted to add there was a pretty active arma angelus livejournal around 2001 or so that was mostly run by pete and occasionally posted on by other members, it was a pretty even mix of personal blog posts by pete and band related announcements of shows and stuff! pretty sure its still up if anyone was curious u could probably find it pretty easily
i love your videos so much!! i'm a couple years younger than you so i *just* missed a lot of these big important events in emo and other scene history and your channel has seriously been like a little encyclopedia of this knowledge i wouldn't have learned otherwise! anything you have to offer is a treat,, you just have such a great energy and i look forward to anything you make! thanks for the vids!! :)
fun fact: dan reynolds from imagine dragons, along with brendon urie and brandon flowers like you mentioned, is also from las vegas and ALSO raised mormon
Even in the final lyrics of This Ain't A Scene I can see some lyrics that kinda mentions the concept of "rockstar complex" people and how "At night we're painting your trash gold" all that kinda stuff
Funny you mention the band the Bravery. All the suddent their song "Believe" popped in my head last week. Haven't heard it in ages. Used to hear it on my local rock station back in the day
Cozy, I truly love your channel!!as someone who has such a hyper fixation on this era of internet and music culture from my childhood I appreciate your content so much! A brokencyde song came up on my playlist at the gym last night, still can’t believe I used to love them 😂
Thank you for the vid. I didnt know this kind of thing while the boys and i were jamming at the school cleaners back in highschool of 09 with the song dance dance by fob
recently discovered your channel, have been selecting videos that let me relive my youth. However, all week I've had a song stuck in my head all week trying to remember who sang it, couldn't. Then as you mention The Bravery and say who can even remember what songs they have, I go look them up and BOOM. Honest Mistake, the song that has been stuck in my head for a week. So thank you very much for not only making amazing content, but for helping me figure out the it was The Bravery who sang Honest Mistake.
I love the deep dives, but videos like this are good because I now work so I don't really have time to watch 1hr videos even at 2x speed. I wouldn't mind more of this!
Nice Allroy’s Revenge shirt brotha! Just saw All at Fest in Gainesville. Great video too, I was just getting into FOB around the time of this beef (at 7 years old lmao) but it was cool to hear about this
"how could you feel like a superhero if you didn't have an arch nemesis?" is such a pete wentz ass thing to say 😭 like slightly obnoxious but self aware at the same time
Hey Cozy! Love videos like this. As someone who got into emo late in the game, it's fun to learn about all the deep cuts in terms of scene culture that I missed the first time around. It's got me wondering if bands these days have stupid feuds, or if the internet is too different nowadays. What's the most famous hyperpop feud? Do emo rappers diss eachother? Lol. I'd love to see a video on the beef between FOB and PTV over them both covering Beat It. Not sure if theres enough for a whole video but it's definitely another silly band feud.
I've not finished the video yet, but huge Killers fan from the start (and big emo!), Brandon is very embarrassed about those feud days, he thought he had to play up to some sort of 'rock' character. And has reached out and apologised to those he spoke about FoB, Green Day, etc. Now thinking back, their A&R to this day is still less than useless, and now I'm pissed 😂
i love your videos sm cozy thank you for them its so hard to find content like this. i havent seen you in a while omg!!! i have so many new videos to catch up on :D
The guys from Saosin a few years earlier had used the internet to get their Translating The Name ep exposure & almost entirely got hype based off that so although that isnt an example of a "mainstream rock act" it is an example of an adjacent act doing similar things to promot & market a little bit earlier. It wouldve been hard for Rock, Alt, Punk, HxC, or Indie-Rock bands at that time to use the internet the way we do now considering until post-2000 social media itself didnt even exist just yet. The internet as you know was a way way less centralized, corporate space it was extremely decentralized & user-reliant back then in the late 90s and early 00s. At 26 going on 27 Im juuuuust old enough to remember web 1.0 lol it wouldve been exponentially harder for ANY artist in 99, '00, '01 to get exposure online. The infrastructure also didnt exist really for high quality audio, video etc either on most websites it wouldve been insanely expensive & difficult for average artists to have any resemblance of the quality & resources we have now 20 years later.
Just found you recently and your channel is literally my new favorite!! I'm begging for a vid on The Used or Yellowcard or Sugarcult if you ever find the time
If anything, I remember P!ATD and The Killers being compared to each other back in the day. Never heard about the FOB/Killers beef but this sounds interesting.
Hey Cozy thanks for the great videos !! Love your content and the drama and info I missed during those days . Also bring back the beard !! You are a beard guy brotha 🖤!!
There’s a huge Mormon population in Vegas 💀 all the hella rich neighborhoods are full of them ETA: I like these chill, no-frills videos. I like keeping your videos on in the background while I knit, so half the time I’m not even looking at the screen. Hope you’re doing good, man!
ok, this is literally the first video i am watching by you, so leaving this here despite the very high chance of you already knowing about it just in case: have you read scrunche zine's essays on fall out boy and related subjects? they link a lot to older interviews/blogs and are pretty interesting
A 2000s era group that I LOVE is Vedera. I saw them open for Mat Kearney in 2009. So talented honestly one of my favorite vocalists. Please check them out!
Pete Wentz saying in response “It’s too bad you wrote a couple of good songs, otherwise it’d be much easier to write you off” sounds like it would be the title of a From Under The Cork Tree FOB song 😂❤
Dying at your description of the inner workings (or lack thereof) of Brendon Urie 🤣 I don’t really know sh*t about the dude but why does it sound so true?! 💀
I was far too young to remember this beef even though I did like both bands, still do but I think Pete was just playing into the beef for publicity, I don't think he truly cared what Brandon thought of FOB or the situation at all. He came from the DIY Hardcore scene and when you're in the Punk scene, especially the Hardcore Punk scene you get ego checked real quick.
Who thought or said this is the worst youtube channel of all time? I find these videos genuinely interesting. Edit: The bravery SLAPS, first album sounds like a combination of The Killers and Metric. I recommend An Honest Mistake or Fearless
"james montgomery again" is a detail that made me chuckle out loud. yeah, if it is fall out boy or p!atd related and from the 2000s, the chances that this was written by james montgomery is around 90 percent
The Mormons were the first permanent non native settlement in the Vegas valley. The fort is still up to go see I believe it’s at Floyd lamb state park.
Dunno if anyone in comments mentioned it but since you sort of half asked/mentioned Pete being one of if not the first real rock guy to use internet for marketing I just wanna point my finger to Megadeth. I’d go out on a limb and claim that they are known for being the first band to have a big internet presence in the early 90s. Check it out. Megadeth Arizona
i really don't know how the emo thing went down in the us, but i come from latam and back in 2007-08 -ish, maybe a little later? schools used to hand out these leaflets where they'd explain parents how to spot an emo and how to support them ?? looking back on it i find it ridiculous, but what you said is also true; most songs labeled as emo had this self-deprecating and death-glamorizing tone to them, so i'm not sure if schools were overplaying it or it was a real concern lmao, so hearing that brandon flowers had called it dangerous a couple of years earlier, makes a lot of sense, but also makes it funny. then again, in latam there was a mexican band (not sure if they're still around) that was called PXNDX which was heavily influenced by FOB (they've got a song with a chorus which is a translation of "Nobody puts baby in the corner"'s last lines, but who am i to judge) and their lyrics were quite suicide-driven and in spanish, so everybody could understand, as opposed to fob of p!atd which was limited to english speakers, also (for any people coming from latam) la rosa de guadalupe is an extremely popular thing over here and there's an episode in which the protagonist wants to be emo lmao (you can look up "la rosa de guadalupe Soy emo" to witness true cinema) anyways, watching this video reminded me of reading these tiny magazines they used to sell in my country where they'd talk about alternative/younger-people music back in the late 00s where i'm sure i read something about this beef and it made me nostalgic. great video!!
Great stuff as always, Julian! Someone in Finn Mckentys chat once suggested you do a video on the full story of Romanceonarocketship! Was his hair real???? The people must know!!! And youre the only one qualified to speak on such matters... also someone probably mentioned it already but just in case, theres a very large concentration of Moromons in Utah and by extension the surrounding Southwest( iirc thats where Mormonism started).
there is definitely a mormon thing in Vegas lol the neighborhood i grew up in was right between my high school and a morman church. actually the high school that Ronnie Radke and this friends were at when the shooting took place
hello friends!
quick announcement: starting with this video onwards, for the first time ever, i am officially going to start putting up a NEW VIDEO EVERY WEEK!
every tuesday evening for the forseeable future, there will be a new cozy rep vid :)
it will be kind of an experiment at first / something i've wanted to do for a while.
not every video will be a long documentary-style deep dive like i normally do; maybe one of those videos a month, but the rest will be, for now, me trying out a bunch of different stuff. fun experimentation!
at this point in my journey on youtube, the channel is, for me, nothing more than a place for fun creative expression. a little art project.
so for the first time ever, come back every tuesday evening for a new vid! hope you'll stick around for the ride and thank you for everyone who's rocked with me this far.
Thank the lord!!! This one a month thing was literally killing me
Yay!!! This is awesome news
let’s gooo!!!
HELL YESSS
Excited for anything you decide to put out! I’m so glad to have found your channel
even pete's insults are cripticly poetic lmao
As a British man whos spent my life being subjected to the Killers music everywhere, i am still to this day baffled that they are not british
Hearing their music being blared out everywhere made me want to vomit
weird they sound very American to me
My mum inexplicably thought they were from Finland. to this day we have no idea why, but it's turned into a decades long joke where she exclaims "well good for them, small town Finnish boys getting out and seeing the world!"
First thought when I saw the title; "They had beef!? Over what!? Which one was hurt more by their unrequited love's rejection?"
Lol, similar thought.
As a decently big fan of both, same. Lmao.
There's an odd amount of people raised mormon in the alt music scene.
Eh, Flowers and Killers are better
@@vvx600 hey man, respect your opinion, but I wasn’t trying to compare who’s better here. Just trying to say that both lead singers have some similar stories here
To be fair both bands only had 1 good album. Everything after with both bands sucked@@vvx600
Not the exact same name, one is Brandon one is Brendan
Explaining old band feuds and rumors like this to kids makes me feel like an old soldier explaining the outbreak of a world war to his grandkids sometimes...
I remember this! I also remember Pete doing an interview letting everyone know they were finally “beef free”

He stopped in to check out our store on the way back to Vegas, after they recorded the first album. Dude was super chill and really humble. Definitely deserves the success he got.

Wait, The Bravery is ACTUALLY kinda wicked, highly reccomend their debut album and The Sun and The Moon album such good songs dude
Agreed! Way better than The Killers, in my opinion.
I checked after he brought them up just to see if I knew any songs. I think believe was the only one I recognized but that opening riff was definitely unmistakable
Agreed. Honest Mistake is still one of my favorite music videos ever!!
Right!? Stir The Blood (their third album) is great too! , AND they are back together and in the studio!!
@@nogrecordsthis is actually rlly cool

been a subscriber for a year now and i’m just as happy for this upload as i was binging last year! whatever pace you choose is fine, but please keep it coming! ❤ happy halloween!!
I literally came in the comments looking for other Vegas people telling him about the Mormon thing 😂
what a bloody treat
I never thought about how similar The Bravery and The Killers were until now.

Nope. Linkin Park was out there years before.
Your ability to dive deep into topics and site articles is seriously impressive. I love these videos so much bro.
My dog's doped up after having an operation and this was honestly exactly what I needed. I miss Pete Wentz having unfettered internet access.
Same though. It’s probably a good thing overall but like I do miss it.
Cozy, what?! An Honest Mistake by The Bravery is still. so. GOOD!
Continuing the video now. Lol

I remember The Bravery from back in the 2000s. "So give me something to believe. But I am living just to breathe."
the background of your room looks identical to mine in 2013 it makes me so nostalgic 🥲
If anything, I remember P!ATD and The Killers being compared to each other back in the day. Never heard about the FOB/Killers beef but this sounds interesting.

then again, in latam there was a mexican band (not sure if they're still around) that was called PXNDX which was heavily influenced by FOB (they've got a song with a chorus which is a translation of "Nobody puts baby in the corner"'s last lines, but who am i to judge) and their lyrics were quite suicide-driven and in spanish, so everybody could understand, as opposed to fob of p!atd which was limited to english speakers, also (for any people coming from latam) la rosa de guadalupe is an extremely popular thing over here and there's an episode in which the protagonist wants to be emo lmao (you can look up "la rosa de guadalupe Soy emo" to witness true cinema)
anyways, watching this video reminded me of reading these tiny magazines they used to sell in my country where they'd talk about alternative/younger-people music back in the late 00s where i'm sure i read something about this beef and it made me nostalgic. great video!!
0:11 "im sure theres someone worse than me" i stopped the video and started naming every single sh!tty ytber i came across
If Brendon says that being emo is dangerous then wtf does that make him and his band? 💀 the sense isn’t sensing
"Write the best songs you can..." as a Killers fan, they are not songwriters lol. I love them but this is a big ask
