- this video started out as me trying to write a quick album review for fall out boy's new album, but alas, fall out boy are my favorite band and i have a lot to say about them... and this new album is very full-circle and an important one for fob. SO this video turned into my own personal contextualization of fall out boy's entire career, what their new album means and represents in the context of that, as well as in the context of the current era of emo/pop punk nostalgia which we are currently in. if you just wanna hear me talk about the new album, i think i start talking about it at around the half hour mark, but you should watch the whole video, i worked hard on it! haha

I think people sometimes forget that the bands just make music that they happened to enjoy and that they don’t make music specifically to impress them. they do it because it’s what they like to do. I also think a lot of fans have this mentality that you have to enjoy everything a band releases but you don’t however you still have to respect it.
Yeah albums only come out sounding as good as FOB's early records if the writers are actually passionate about what they're making. I think FOB is just done with pop punk... as much as I wish it wasn't true
I think we have to remember that being a musician is a profession, and professions come with obligations. Pleasing the fans is part of the job description, in a way. Successful bands owe it to their fans to make music that caters to their tastes. Bands still SHOULD and DO have the creative liberties to experiment with music and feel fulfilled making the music they want to make -- but there needs to be a compromise, so that the artists are happy and the fans are happy as well. Saying a major label artist should make the music they want to make is a bit self-entitled, I think.
That being said, I don't believe an artist should ever return to their older sound regardless of how loud their major fans are, because it's not a smart business decision. Nostalgia albums could be rewarding for fans, but it objectively may not be profitable. That's just a general sentiment, kind of applicable to FOB, but not in any way a disagreement with the video.
They don’t owe anyone anything. Art is an authentic expression from the artist, it’s not a Burger King order. Yes fans vote with their almighty dollar, but music is a gift from the artist. Their are plenty of other bands that can fit your taste if you don’t like how as bands shifted. I appreciate how experimental fob is. There’s something from every era that stands out
you actually understand what fall out boy does and it's so refreshing to see someone finally explain it so well. it annoys me when people still think they need to do pop punk just because they did on their first album. just because that album was pop punk doesn't even mean they were ever aiming to be a pop punk band. they truly just do whatever they want, which is usually their own take on what's popular. people literally just set themselves up to not like anything new fall out boy releases (even ever since cork tree) when they continue to put them in that pop punk box.
I'd also like to point out that they haven't gotten lazy in the music video department either. They keep making cool, interesting videos instead of doing the usual live footage/band in a field type of video. They always deliver on the videos.
I grew up as a Fall Out Boy girl during the pop punk epidemic and honestly I find their new album very comfortable and fun. Nothing amazing and not really pandering just chill and being themselves.
It's still got Patrick's interesting vocal 'tricks' too.

You saying that SMFS re-contextualizes the 2010s albums is such a spot on way to put it. SRAR, AB/AP, and MANIA aren't bad albums. I actually really love SRAR, and the other two have really good tracks. I think fans understanding that SMFS is not "out of nowhere" and actually continues their progression as a band, but also utilizes what made them so good in the past is so important.

Everyone tends to forget that your favorite artists are human. They change and grow. Just like you don’t like or want to listen to the same thing forever, neither do they especially as they grow up. To go back to what you were doing, saying, and thinking when you were 18 would feel as weird as it sounds. Trying to recapture that just because it’s what someone else wants when you aren’t feeling it anymore, that would be the actual sellout. You may not like what some artists do as they grow but that’s fine. Nothing stays the same forever as much as we want it to.
This album is very special for me because it’s very careful in the way it’s created even the transition between songs is perfectly faded into each other that you could order it differently and it’s good but the pattern as is almost like a story
Been waiting to hear your take on this and damn, was that worth it. To me, FOB, as well as Panic and My Chem have always very much done their own thing. They got put into whatever genre and they've all transcended that genre in favour of doing exactly what they wanted to do. That's what made them great and that's what gave them staying power. They were actually there for the music. Do I love this album? Yeah, big time. But what I love even more is that they seem to love this album. They did exactly what they wanted to do and they happened to step into the zeitgeist with it. They would have made this without whatever revival or nostalgia simply cause they wanted to.
After Mania I was so worried the guys were gonna try to appeal to the TikTok generation and make songs that are like 2 minutes and 30 seconds max that don't have a bridge. Luckily I was wrong, for the first time in ten years it feels like they're just making THEIR music again and not following trends. So Much (For) Stardust is easily their best album since Folie a Deux, and I say that as someone who has enjoyed a great deal of their post-hiatus output.
I agree with your take on their career as a whole, FOB were always making a commentary on whatever scene they were involved in. There’s a heck of a lot of cynicism in Pete’s lyrics in the 2000s that always gave me a very self-aware vibe. They were always on that high concept shit.
Hold Me Like a Grudge is probably my favorite on the album too. But I also love What a Time to be Alive for its dancability… I’ll always be that pop-punk girl who loves upbeat energetic music I can jump around to the most 💯 😁
i've been a fob fan for 10+ years and i feel like all of this was taken straight out of my brain. pete wentz changed my brain forever when i was a sad 15 year old kid and i'm always glad to see other people who seem to Really Get what he's doing with the band and how his creative influence has informed so much of who the band is. i love fall out boy and i love people who love fall out boy. just a really great video all around!!

I think that at this point saying "old music was better" or that the Mania album was bad is already boring. Fall Out Boy is a band with a lot of history and depth, it's a shame that a lot of people are missing out on that just because it's something you have to say to look good.
We who believe that FOB is a great and influential band, that gives us art every time, we have to show ourselves proud. We don't have to be afraid to say it out loud.
FOB is a band and that's it. Not a pop punk band.
Emo became a cultural and artistic movement, beyond punk, beyond aesthetics, so it is our responsibility, as the generation that created Emo, to carry it forward with pride.

I love them so much because each album is different and has its own mood, makes ot WAY easier to decide what to listen to for different moods. Sometimes you just want Calm Before the Storm and sometimes ya just absolutely need Twin Skeletons and Wilson.

I never gave up on Punk Pop/Emo. I have to say that I call them my "forever bands" - bands that have been there making music through my teens, early 20s, and now mid-30s. Avril Lavinge, Paramore, Fall out Boy, Panic! At the Disco. I don't like every song or album they came out with. But, I do love that bands reinvent themselves because it's like I am still growing as a person - and so are they.
I adore this channel, and have to save that your insights always get me falling in love with the music all over again. So glad you decided to become the Cozy Rep and share love of this genre with us!

i seem to be the expert at picking underrated fob songs as my favorites because i don't see a ton of people listing the kintsugi kid as a top favorite on the album but it is my absolute favorite. something about it just captured me that song changed me as a person

Yo, I just want to say, I love your videos. I've been watching the deep dives since the Johnny Craig files (which were captivating). You're incredible and, as a creator myself, I know how important getting that feedback is. Honestly, after a career of craziness that still hasn't gotten me to a place of my own internal "success" in my eyes, an internal goal of mine is to (while I'm finally focusing on my debut SOLO record) make an album that you appreciate. I like your music taste and appreciate your perspectives. I grew up in the Seattle music scene playing shows opening for bands a few years older than me (The Scene Aesthetic / Danger Radio, This Providence, Kay Kay & His Weathered Underground (which a few members became Portugal The Man), etc. I've had a relatively successful career playing the youtube/social media game and am finally focusing on prioritizing original music again. You'll appreciate this... as a fanboy of The Cab, I hired Dave Briggs (their drummer later on as you did mention) as my last touring drummer. It feels a little crazy that I'm currently not making daily tiktoks to try to go viral and, instead making something I can be proud of but I know this pause in my unoriginal content uploaded will be worth it. Anyways, just wanted to say that I really love your content and appreciate the hard work and research you put into it. Keep it up brother. Would love to shoot the shit with you sometime. If I'm ever on tour in your area, you are so coming on the RV and we'll hang. Rock on.
I will forever be a FOB fan. Not only are they from the area I grew up in (my cousin literally went to high school with Patrick), but they have been apart of my teenage and adult years. I remember listening to Infinity on High for the first time with one of my best friends on the bus on our way to school and thinking I was so hardcore for liking them. I’ve seen them live 3 times and loved every moment of it. Save Rock and Roll came out during one of the most difficult times of my life and I feel it was exactly what I needed at the time. I will never give up on them ❤

Love the new record too and also love all the new stuff (including Mania) and old stuff. My sister and I are going to see them in concert at the same venue we saw them for their Inifinity on High tour. My sister informed me that young(er) people call FOB "mom rock" now, and I think we should embrace it!
OH MY GOD i’d been putting off this video for whatever reason and MAN you summed up my thoughts on it perfectly. heavy on the points about mania vs this album - people didn’t like mania and they like sm(f)s so they think oh they must be two separate things and fall out boy are just Better Now (i think the time difference between the two really adds to this feeling) but to me mania was such a necessary step to getting here. everything they’ve made up to this point has been necessary to get here. you really hit the nail on the head saying they’ve come full circle - given the absolute State of this tour as well (i mean pavlove live like come on???) i think fall out boy feel that way too. i love how comfortable they’ve gotten with their own music and history. that’s also why it bothers me when people call this album a ‘return to form’ as if mania or even the past ten years were just a misstep and not totally vital exploration. it’s not a return to form the way i see it, it’s completion.
note: this is also why the thought of an impending fall out boy breakup for real this time terrifies me. with everything so perfectly in place, it feels like maybe they’ll decide they’re done with this particular project. but who knows, they could also just open a door i can’t see from here. it’s why i love them :)
I feel like Save Rock and Roll was a taste of Patrick's solo music and SMFS has SO MUCH Patrick solo influence. Total random take but that's what I truly noticed and in interviews Pete made it a point that there were some songs that were really Patrick songs.

This is brilliant! I remember hearing Heaven, Iowa and my jaw just dropping at the drums and guitar and just loving the more rock direction that the album seemed to go with. This is genuinely one of my favourite albums of theirs! Honestly a brilliant transition from mania coz you can still see the experimentation that mania had but it still is a heavier album overall.
As a huge Fall Out Boy fan for many years, I agree with everything you had to say in this video! The title track and Heaven Iowa made my jaw drop when I first heard them, two of the best Fall Out Boy songs of the post-hiatus era and entering into my top 15 FOB songs ever! Easily the best post-hiatus album and now my third favourite Fall Out Boy album period (first being FUTCT followed closely by IOH).

I personally was never too invested in FOB aside from whatever was on the radio growing up, up until my adulthood in 2023. When Love From the Other Side showed up on apple music, not even looking at the date it was released, i was convinced that song was from a FOB album from the mid-late 2000s that i just didn't hear before. Finding out that it was getting released **this year** as their newest album in 2023 absolutely floored me and i was even more hyped to hear the rest.
When i listened to the entire album when it got released my fate was sealed, and now FOB is now one of my favorite bands of all time 👏👏

You do a great job of providing perspective on their career and how they got to this point. I'm a huge FOB as well and this album really shows how they come full circle.
My favorite song is the title track, so much for stardust, because it encompasses everything I like about FOB. For me the thing that has made them so great is how they can draw from so many different influences. On so much for stardust they open up with a string section and end with a gospel choir. There are too many bands from any genre who can do that effectively.

new subscriber here, fall out boy is also my favorite band and even though i've liked them since middle school, i'm only just recently getting into their older stuff (and absolutely loving it) and learning about their early days, and your channel has been invaluable for that. been binging your videos while working on my jean jacket i'm wearing to see them live for the first time this year and i love hearing you talk about their music :)
I’m really glad that you made this video. It has definitely changed my perspective on the new album. I was 13 when I heard Grand Theft Autumn for the first time and subsequently got into Fall Out Boy. I loved them as a pop punk band. I loved the growth in the beginning and each of the first 5 albums holds a special place in my heart. I loved save rock and roll, despite it being a huge departure from their previous style. After that, I kind of fell off. I loved the singles I’ve heard (as pop songs) but it never felt like “fall out boy” to me. I haven’t really listened to those later albums. Obviously when I heard Love from the Other side, I was elated and expected a modern version of their original pop punk sound. I felt so deflated when I heard the album. It doesn’t feel cohesive to me and I felt a bit tricked by the first single. I really haven’t had much time or energy to analyze the album on this level, so I thank you infinitely for doing that for me. I just felt like it was another pop album let down from fall out boy. I don’t expect bands to re-make the same album over and over. I actually really love new paramore and P!ATD (except that last album man). I even loved Patrick’s solo project and still listen to those songs sometimes. Something about newer FOB just doesn’t connect with me. A lot of it feels disingenuous and like it’s trying “too hard”. I agree that this album definitely has more energy and ‘spark’ than their previous albums and I’m so happy to see that. To be honest, I’m a huge lyrics person. I haven’t been able to relate much to newer FOB lyrics. From this album, their were songs I liked, but nothing I felt connected to on first listen. I think I’ve grown a lot as a person and Pete’s lyrics have grown/changed as well since the beginning. I’m definitely going to give this album another chance in the context that it is FOB’s take on their own discography.

Thanks so much for giving your insight into the new album. I totally agree on everything you said about it and what it means in terms of the bands history. I've been one of those little haters of the comeback era that you talk about for some time and listening to the new album was at first pretty disappointing to me. But then after relistenung a few times the original FOB spirit of the songs really got through to me and made me look at all of their newer stuff in a different way. I think it really is just about embracing the change and this record really builds a metaphorical bridge for that.
I was so happy when I saw the new single a few months ago, and my hopes were high for the new album and I have to say that the new album was incredible. First, the production on this is astounding. I love the sound on every song. it kind of reminds me of folie a deux, but also feels like they wanted to incorporate new things like mania. I remember hearing the track “heaven, iowa” and I had chills from that second chorus when the electric guitar comes in. Lyrically, it does well. i relate to those songs, and they mean a lot to me, a month after it’s release. The album itself got me back into fall out boy.
now, i didn’t grow up with albums like “take this to your grave” or “from under the cork tree”. I didn’t really get into fall out boy as a whole until mid-2021 to be honest. But this album has honestly changed my life a little bit, and given me something that helps me through hard times. getting this new album, and a month prior we got paramore’s new album which was amazing. These two have something special and I love them for those qualities.
Everyone’s gonna have their own opinions and whatnot. no one is obligated to like every album a band shoots out. Everyone is different with their tastes and some people like what bands spew out. and that’s okay. of course just don’t be disrespectful about the bands efforts or authenticity, especially when it comes to fall out boy.
my point is is that i enjoyed so much (for) stardust… and that’s honestly it.

Pop punk never dies. Emo heads kinda fizzles and became more mainstream but through the 2010’s a lot of great bands have put out records that slap and and had underground success. Nothing has stuck like those that caught the wave in the early 2000’s but they still put out great music. It’s sad if you listened to radio between 2009-2015
I prefer the pre-hiatus FOB, but never considered them sellouts or anything. They evolved and that's totally fine. I like some of their songs since then, but have not been big on their post-hiatus album. That being said, I really liked So Much for Stardust. Was legitimately surprised how much I enjoy it.
Also, I don't want bands like them or Paramore to do full nostalgia albums, even if I prefer that era. Ironicallty, that would be the actual sellout move that people complain about. The Wonder Years did it well where they put out a couple songs in the style of their Upsides era. They were standalone, not them returning to that style, as seen on their newest album continuing their evolved sound. I thought that was really cool. If you're gonna go the nostalgia route, I think that's the way to do it. Throw fans a few songs in that style, but keep your current sound for your full lengths and stuff.

If I try to remove bias from the equation, Stardust is arguably the bands best record. It’s incredibly impressive.
First, thank you for this video. I can tell you put a lot of effort into this, and it was very enjoyable.
I consider myself a loyal and lifetime Fall Out Boy fan. No matter how much they change, I believe I will always love them. I enjoyed some of the post-hiatus music, but not nearly as much. While I definitely do prefer classic, original Fall Out Boy, I do appreciate how they've evolved over time and have explored different musical styles.
I liked Mania from the first listen of the album, and I found myself quite disappointed with So Much For Stardust. I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it wasn't that. I didn't hate the album, but I don't think that I liked it. After listening to your speech, I revisited both Mania and SMFS. I have a greater appreciation for Mania than I did before. And because of you pointing out certain things in the album that I didn't pay attention to before, I have an appreciation and respect for Stardust.
I found Fall Out Boy and Panic! At the Disco both in 2007, and they've been my favorite bands ever since.

This album is by far my favorite post hiatus album FOB have released and after numerous times relistening to it it has become my 2nd favorite Album they've ever released. 2nd only to Folie. I'm very curious what you have to say about it.

What do you think about Lake Effect Kid? I think that was a great way to display their roots and get some old fall out boy sound without feeling like they were regressing. Probably my favorite newer song of theirs.
Great take as always Cozy! FOB is responsible for getting me really into the music scene and was the backdrop for my adolescence and as such the pre-hiatus albums will always hold a special place in my heart for reasons way beyond their sound. I was psyched to learn about SMFS in part because of the possibility not so much of it being a deliberate throwback nostalgia record but that because emo/guitar music has made a bit a resurgence that it would naturally sound more like that. I think even just the cryptic announcement of it really touched on my nostalgia for the band and brought me back to the days of trolling on livejournal and tumblr and myspace when I got home from school. Now I'm 28 and SMFS has me watching every new FOB interview out there when I get home from work, just like I'm in middle school again lol. For me I grew away from FOB after the hiatus, in part because I was that asshole who had to hate on mainstream popular bands but mainly it just wasn't that interesting to me at that point in my life. I'm so glad that SMFS is what is it, and now I've actually taken the chance to go back listen to all the post-hiatus FOB, and knowing what I know now about how the band set out to change their sound with each album and not just stagnate in the same pop-punk sound, I really can appreciate those albums and their entire discography and completely agree that their progression really makes a lot sense when you reflect on it as a whole. To me, I think what is most throwback aspect of this album is the production of it. Patrick has said in interviews that they really wanted to take their time with this album and I think it does really come through. 100% agree about FOB just not really being the band for the those who think TTTYG was their only good record, I definitely know a few people like that.
The more I look at Save Rock And Roll the more I see it was a spiteful album to their former fans. FOB is interesting they can make an album attacking their fans and it works hahaha. Overall the new album is decent. I haven't been truly excited for a FOB album since Folie and this at least excited me with the first single. At the point in my life right now this album hits right I have been enjoying it.
Okay I guess I’ll listen. I went to Hella Mega tour, as well as Panic’s last tour. Took my 15 year old. This music continues to evolve in my life - I have this link now with my teen and it reminds me so often of how hard it is to be a teenager. Idk. Patrick can wail. He was the best part of Hella Mega for me.
I'm starting this comment saying that I'm not the biggest fan of the early pop punk sound, I can enjoy it but I'm more into the stuff after 2007 like Infinity on High or Folie and more pop stuff like Patrick's Soul Punk or SRAR. With that being said, So Much (For) Stardust it's a great evolution from what they did from the start and in the 2010s while creating something new and unique. I listened MANIA a few weeks after SM(F)S mostly because I already listened to more than a half of the songs from it, and I liked the direction they did there, but I felt that they could have tried more with it. SM(F)S was a step up after MANIA and they definetely thought on doing something better, unlike MANIA that I felt it a bit rushed, and maybe this has to do with the delay.
About their post-hiatus work, while they are really different to their work it wasn't bad. Save Rock And Roll was amazing, it's a no skip album with one of their BIGGEST collabs to this day, being the one with Elton John. American Beauty/American Psycho was a good successor to Save Rock And Roll but a bit lacking compared to the last one, and they relied WAY TOO MUCH on sampling like in Uma Thurman or Forth of July and hooks like in Irresistible. And then there's MANIA, which as I said previously, they had great ideas and the best songs shows it but it didn't manage to complete it.
Honestly, I feel that So Much (For) Stardust is an amazing record, every song is amazing with the instrumentation, the outstanding vocals of Patrick and the great lyricism of Pete. I want to see the different styles they try to do in the future and the direction they will take, but for now let's enjoy So Much (For) Stardust because I think we have it all.
i listened to SMFSD the day of released and absolutely... fucking hated it... except for the 2 singles they released. but then like 9 months later i came back to it after accidentally binging FOB interviews about the album.. and fucking LOVED it. Folie is my favorite album by far, but i was not a fan of ABAP... but i do REALLY like Novocaine... some songs on Mania i do enjoy. i i love patrick stump so much as a musical creator and visionary, and his experience in the music production industry really shined so much here... his vocals on this album are the best i have ever heard... he is easily one of the best vocalists of the past 2 decades. an amazing album that i can listen to front to back. Kintsugi Kid makes me cry every fucking time i listen to it...and i love what you said about Heaven, Iowa. "Golden" is that song for me, i can't listen to it without starting to cry. i fucking love this band so much.
I think it's safe to say that so much for Stardust is Fall Out Boys common courtesy if you are familiar with A Day to Remember. I feel like common courtesy was another album where multiple errors were brought into one album to bring it all full circle before evolving even further

This made me think about other artists, like Demi Lovato, where she basically did similar career shifts, assumingly because of the similar reasons, and their collaboration with Fob on Irresistible is the pinnacle of it & their “pop phase” so to speak

My knees jerk reaction the thw old album was an automatic "oh I miss the old fob" but a few days ago I found myself singing the choris to Heartkbreak never felt so good and I realized that I actually can her the old fob in this new record.
Every FoB album I really like a couple songs off of and the rest I don't hate I just don't really listen to it. Sort of the same with this album, but I enjoyed it more than the last couple albums listening to it from front to back. So I was pretty satisfied even as a casual fan.
if FOB didn't evolve every album and bring something new, they wouldn't be FOB. They've cemented themselves as legends even with a "bad" album. Just saw their concert and the level of detail in the imagery makes you want to go back and study every single album and music video. Truly one of my favorite bands of all time.
Bands like Fall Out Boy, & Paramore, Panic! etc. aren’t 17 anymore so of course they’re making music that they relate to more now. They can do what they want & the beauty of those old records is that they’re still there, people like me can listen to that & enjoy it, & people who like the new stuff they’re making can listen to that.
Please do a rise and fall of one of the most underrated post-hardcore bands, Scary Kids Scaring Kids. ‘The Bright Side of Suffering’ is like the Mineral ‘If I Could’ of the 2000s.

Heaven, Iowa is one of my fav songs already. Definitely was disappointed by Mania but there are some bangers there for sure
I’m way more of a lyrics person than music so I don’t think I felt the 2010s shift as hard as others. I’ve liked all their albums. I have a ranking of course of course but I think every album has standouts. Though it is funny that my favorite mania song is the piano cover of young and a menace.
It’s interesting being in a later wave of emo/pop punk fans than it’s hay day , I found emo/pop punk during the emo trinity/tumblr wave where it was kinda of cool but still kinda not, where as you see emo starting to become quiet around 2014 and that’s when it started for me and the sub genre was still very much active and alive, just not in the same way. This isn’t a bad thing or anything jsut an interesting observation of small generational differences
48:37 OHOHOHHOO YES EXACTLY ok i have SUCH a bone to pick with american beauty/american psycho - it is incredibly grating and and honestly kind of overstimulating to me - and for a long time i just did not listen to it because i couldn’t see anything good about it. recently i’ve developed an appreciation for its more fun sort of campy vibe but god so good right now imo does it SO much better - by which i mean in a way i can understand the first time (and it doesn’t make my ears hurt lmaooo)
