- For a long time craft paint was the cheapest of options for creation acrylic paint pours on a budget. I recently made a video reviewing My Paintz acrylic paint and in some cases these are better paints for the same price.
With this experiement I used a 70% Craftsmart white glue and 30% water mixture as my pouring medium. Then I mixed that 2 parts medium to 1 part paint and then added water to my desired consistency.
I then did a flip cup pour with both a set of Craftsmart craft paints and the same color or My Paintz paint. All the while I compared quality, consitency, vibrancy and overall beauty of the end result.

I'm totally nerding out with all the science talk - please please do more experimenting!
I sure will Yolanda. I love geeking out on this kind of stuff.
This is a perfect example of the value of your experiementing! I love that you were surprised! Thank you!
Thank you Marna. It was kind of nice to get surprised like that.
Wow what a difference between the two paints. Love the straight pour and the cells.
Thanks Christine. So interesting how different paints react.
I just love your videos! They're so informative & you're a natural teacher...but they're also fun! Makes me smile. Thank you, as always & please know how much you are appreciated.
Hope you are well & happy!
Thank you so much my friend. Hope you've had a great weekend.
Wow! Thanks, David! xx 🎉
You are so welcome Fran.
Wow, I was really surprised by the results of this test. Could it be cause you had to add so much water to thin the other paints down? I noticed they weren't has vibrant either. Can't wait to see more experiments done with this. Thank you so much for doing these for us.
I don't think so. They looked similar right when I poured and before I fully tilted.
Its fun to watch you paint. Super fun intro and great editing too.
Thank you so much 🤗 Did some different things this time.
The one with all the cells is so cool. Great test 👏😍💙
I think so too! Thanks Amy.
Fantastic experiment. Every little variable makes such a difference. I love both canvases at the end… & am learning so much from you!! Thanks.
Thanks so much 😊
Great experiment Dave, love all your videos. They have helped me tremendously.
My pleasure Linda. Thanks for continuing to watch.
I love all the experimentation that you do which helps all of the artists out here. Thanks
Glad you enjoy it Mary Ellen.
Very interesting 🤔 can’t wait to see more 👍🏼
Definitely more to come.
@@LeftBrainedArtist it’s fun watching you experiment 😊
Interesting! I think Craft Smart metallics are very reactive, I’ve got a few favorite colors that always give me great cells. But I definitely agree that there’s nothing wrong with going as cheaply as you can :)
I have always gotten some cellular action but nothing this pronounced.
I just ordered My Paintz and am looking forward to playing with it.
So far they are great. I don't recommend them for cell creation though. Just cheap vivid colors.
Very interesting results, can't wait to see more!
More to come for sure Jan.
Great video and great results! Thank you for the experiment. Both are so beautiful and easy on the eye ❤
Thanks so much! 😊
That is SO COOL!!!! I honestly love the less expensive paints depending on what I am doing. You almost have more versatility with the sharper paints…..and if you want cells like crazy….they have to be thinner!!
Definitely!!
Huge difference from last week's painting! I REALLY liked last week's painting...so bold & strong in composition & colors!
I know right?!? The medium makes all the difference.
Here in Australia we have this cheap brand called ArtBox and mate they are so good the results are just as good as the expensive paint goes to show you don't need to splash heaps of money on expensive paint if I can do my art on a budget then that's a Win
Amen to that. Love cheap alternatives that work.
Thanks for sharing xx
Thanks for watching Jeanette.
That’s really interesting, both of the craft paint pics turned out great 👍🏻 can’t wait to hear more on your testing on these! Thanks so much for sharing ❤
Coming soon for sure.
Wow! The craft paint really turned out gorgeous. I like the ribbon ‘cloud’ effect of the mypaintz straight pour.
I was wondering if you would ever consider showing how you make your videos. I would love to create a UA-cam channel and would be interested in how you set up your cameras and what you use to edit your videos. Thanks so much for all your videos. I have learned so much.💕🙌🏻💕
I will definitely think about that Michele.
@@LeftBrainedArtist thank you so much for even taking it under consideration !!!!😃🙌🏻😃
Your tests are so surprising sometimes. 🙂 What would we do without testers like you. Make many more mistakes me thinks. Lol Thank you for all your hard work.
Thank you Cynthia. I guess it is lucky that I love testing isn't it?
Thank you !
Always a pleasure Macska.
Interesting 🙂 Thank you
Welcome!
These experiments are always great! I'm looking forward to seeing a comparison with both paints mixed to a thicker consistency,. i.e., a straight pour with the craftsmart at the consistency of last week's My Paintz trial run.
I think the MP would blow craftsmart out of the water with that but we'll have to see.
The differences took me by surprise too. Looking forward to you experimenting with paint/medium. Of course the main difference for us up in the north is that My Paintz won't ship to Canada and Amazon charges over twice the price for their paints. Do you think the flip cup didn't work because you had to add so much water to get the same consistency as the craft paint? Very interesting video for sure. Thank you.
I don't think so. Before I really started tilting the colors were the same. The silver is just a good cell activator I think and grabbed the other colors as it came up through them.
Wow very interesting. Can't wait for the dried results. Did you put any oil in the paints?
None. Just plain paint and medium.
I noticed the blue really took over on the MP flip pour. Could this be because they were all of a similar heavyish density and therefore didn't separate so the blue just laid on top?
You vids are fascinating as always. Thanks for sharing 😊💖🎨
I haven't done the investigation on the densities on those paints yet but that could very well be it. However, they looked the same at the initial "flip" so I think the effects that lighter silver on the craft side is what made them so different.
Tilt more of the paint off of the one on the right and you’ll get more cells….
I figured that out totally by accident lol
Why on the right?
Many times I've wondered about using all of the same brand of products, having never used glue I found this quite interesting! You did not use any metallics in the My Paintz, did you?
Yes the silver was also metallic. It just doesn't reaction the same as the silver from Craftsmart.
So surprising. Wonder what would happen if you, used some of both brands in the same pour?
Those tests are definitely upcoming too.
I just started doing paint pouring and your videos have answered so many of my questions. Thank you so much for your time doing videos to help us. I have spent hours trying to research regarding Owatrol. Do I just add it to my paints or do I need to dilute it with water a little.
Just add it to your paints directly. (paint:owatrol) 1:1 with craft/cheap paint. 1:2 for student level acrylic and 1:3-5 for really high quality paint. Then add water to get the right consistency.
@@LeftBrainedArtist Thank you so very much for your prompt reply. I have just purchased Amsterdam paints. Could you please tell me would these paints be 2 parts Owatrol to 1 part paint
@@nitzchick start at 2 parts medium to 1 part paint yes. Then you can adjust for different effects you want from there.
Love all the experimentation that you show us. Such great videos. I am just a beginner and I am really confused about mixing my paint as I have Amsterdam acrylic colours and have bought Liquitex as my pouring medium. What should be the ratio? Can you please suggest? Do I have to mix water too?
1 part paint to 2 parts pouring medium. You can actually mix up to about 5 parts pouring medium depending on how bright you want your color to be (less bright with more medium) and how thin you want your mix (more medium = thinner).
@@LeftBrainedArtist Thank you so much for your quick response. It is really so helpful for me. Keep inspiring us always with your videos. Blessed be!
Interesting experiment! I have to ask, why would you use glue as a pm?
It is WAY cheaper than all the other traditional pouring mediums except Floetrol (at least here in the states). Great starter PM.
Hi David, I'm getting ready to use my craft paint & glue all to pour onto my cheap canvases. Should I just put white pouring medium on canvas 1st to get it to flow across? I wasn't sure which video of yours to go to for this answer because there are so many😂. Please direct me to correct video or simple answer please? Thanks, Peggy, your first buyer😂.
You don't need to. Just makes your patters look a little different. ua-cam.com/video/02TZ3L1T_DE/v-deo.html or ua-cam.com/video/q-IZCgkrzIc/v-deo.html
@@LeftBrainedArtist ♥️👋thanks, now I'm going to search your site for flow extender as there's probably many🤷
Hiya I love the channel. I have a question. I have a 4’X3’X1 1/2” tall. How do I find out how much paint to use?
I have a handy paint calculator to figure that out here - leftbrainedartist.com/acrylic-pour-paint-calculator/
Hey have you ever tried to do a poor with the only 1 color having silicone in it .. i feel like that was you. I did a painting yesterday and had some leftover white paint with silicone in it . Was debating trying something with that . I suppose i should just put silicone in every color 😂
If you never did it before or did and can’t remember the video it was on . Would you recommend the silicone layer on the bottom or the top 😂 .
I generally only put silicone in my most dense colors now days so I get the most colors as the paint rises through all the other colors.
Good morning David.i would like to ask you something:when you say artisan colors what does it mean?🙏
Generally there are three levels of quality. Craft paint, student level acrylic, and artist/artiste/artisan/professional. Craft paints are the dollar store, apple barrel, craftsmart etc. You can tell craft as they don' generally tell you the pigments used, the opacity, and lightfastness anywhere on their bottles. Than you have student acrylics, liquitex basics, artist loft 1, mont marte, etc. They are the cheaper paints but they DO have pigments used, the opacity, and lightfastness on their bottles. Last are the professional which are more expensive, they generally have WAY more pigment in them and are brighter colors. These usually have more expensive non synthetic colors also.
@@LeftBrainedArtist Thank you Davide, you are very kind.l bought a tube of Red purple Paint,it didn't have the pigment number or opacity on it the brand of the color is colled PRYMA.l down loaded your color density Page which It is very useful to me.Thanks again, have a nice day 🙏
Ok im confused with craft paint is it not a 1 to 1 ratio, here you used 1 part paint, 2 parts floetrol
That is my normal recommendation for sure. But when testing head to head I wanted to show that My Paintz were so much more pigmented so I decided to do the test for a regular medium not a craft to help highlight that difference.
@LeftBrainedArtist ok got it I thought maybe something had Changed lol
How about Allglue and craft?
Glue-All doesn't cell very much at all in my experience. It is great for pours where you want to keep a solid color. Something in the Craftsmart Glue makes it react differently.
@@LeftBrainedArtist thank you muchly
Are they both from Walmart?
I got the craftsmart from Michaels although they do sell them at Walmart. The other was an Amazon buy.
@@LeftBrainedArtist i got a bit confused. Were you positively surprised with the quality of craftsman or with that of paintz
@@dalialovesdoggies4361 With the cells from the craftsmart paint. Not necessarily the quality since they are kind of muted.
@@LeftBrainedArtist ahhhhh. Thanks😂
