Why people hate quartz? It is great. Change battery and forget about maintenance for years. Actually people bragging about their mechanics and moaning about maintenance costs in the same time are idiots.
Love the 9f, always makes me laugh when some one claims a bunch of gears and springs in an automatic has more 'soul' than a quartz crystal we dig up from the ground that vibrates.
I believe that GS actually develop or ‘grow’ their own quartz crystal but you’re correct, the perception that quartz is somehow less ‘artisanal’ than automatic is absurd and . . . though I’d never deny that automatic watches are absolute marvels of old world engineering craftsmanship, the fact that this is the sole thing that ensures their value in the modern marketplace since the advent of quartz and the debut of the Seiko Quartz Astron 35SQ (the same year that Doraemon made his debut I believe), is total nuts!
@@kbeightyseven1783 every three years you have to change battery, with a quartz. Mechanical watches work just with the energy of your motions. You do call it a huge difference
Bruce, the beauty of our hobby is recognising and appreciating all movements. I started out looking down my nose a little at anything that wasn't automatic or mechanical, but once you open your eyes to top end quartz and the quality thats put into the dials, case designs, and accuracy you cant help but recognize how amazing the likes of high beat GS, Cartier, Citizen 0100 movement (mind blowing)and the likes of F.P.Journe are just truly game changing. Great vid. 👍🍷
Welcome to the club, Bruce!😉 I also own the Sea of Clouds and I´am very impressed by this fantastic timepiece every day!⌚⌚Spring greetings from Northern Germany!🛳🛳
Great vid Bruce, GS is a player in the watch game and in some regard, still slept on by many. GS has become my favorite watch brand, right next to Omega. Their watches give you so much for the money as compared to others of the same price point. To me, their biggest drawback is their clasps. With their engineering prowess, a quick adjust should be child's play.
The regular champagne quartz 44gs has been on my list for several years. An exhibition case back would put it over the top. And I agree a screw down crown would be a very nice addition , like the spring drive and automatics. It Has never made sense to me the set and forget quartz doesn’t get one.
Very cool watch. Open case back on a quartz is wild. At the boutique last week I was thinking how hard it would be to pick just one... GS is in it's own league when it comes to color and dials in my opinion.
Congrats on the new piece! I have myself just a few days ago got myself the omiwatari SBGY013- totally in love with it right now. Totally gives rolex and all other swiss brands a run for their money :) very underrated brand but that's also partly why I enjoy it so much - zero stigma and nobody (except a true watch nerd) gives a sh*t
That’s the thing about GS - they’re such excellent ‘generic’-looking things but they also have that exclusivity to ‘em that only a fellow aficionado can recognize. Also, they happen to be literally superior, both their autos and their quartz.
I was on the phone with the GS boutique here in London to buy one the following day of release and they were all sold out. One other small negative is the 19mm lug width. PS. That was an amazing intro.
Thanks for the vid. My grail watch and the only one in my collection up in the 4-digit price range. It combines finest Japanese craftmanship, design and over-engineering. Therefore, it's for me the very best quartz watch ever built. Love it every single day.
That blue dial is stunning! I only buy black dials but damn...that thing is a beauty. I personally don't like screw-down crows...they are a pain and cause unnecessary wear on a watch that most will only go swimming with. Now a dive watch, a screw-down is a must!!
here is my problem with GS; their watches are thick, their bracelets and clasp are the same you'll find in a random seiko, and they use the same hands on every watch with no lume at all!
I agree that most GS are somewhat too thick and in stainless steel rather head heavy. But not the Sea of Clouds/Unkai with 10,7 mm and well 130 g on my wrist making it just perfect.
The sports models have lume, but the more elegant models forgo the lume as it takes away from that elegance. As far as thickness, their older quartz are 11mm and under for the most part and their newer spring drive and automatics are slimmer. The great thing about GS though is on paper a watch may seem thick, but man...when you put them on, they don't wear thick. GS, like reg Seiko's have a great ergo designs that really fit a wrist well. Just have to see and try them in person.
This is really next-level watchmaking and manufacturing prowess. You made a great decision. I would love to add a Grand Seiko quartz watch to my one-piece collection. Great video!
Congratulations on the handsome watch! I have one at home. Kind of a stunner! The light blue dial is the same as the sbga413, only blue. Great looking case. I need to wear mine more❤
Man that view of the 9F movement is stunning. I've been thinking that if I'm gonna get a GS some day, it's gonna be a Spring Drive, but with how much thought they put into their quartz movement and the relatively more affordable prices of the quartz models I'm not so sure anymore.
Thanks for a great review on an excellent HAQ watch. I'm still debating a GS HAQ or The Citizen with Eco Drive so I don't have to worry about a battery change for a couple decades and still enjoy the high accuracy time keeping.
Hi Bruce, this is a beautiful piece, congratulations! I was not aware one can set the hour hand without hacking the movement - maybe you are the first highlighting this. Ideal travel watch. I have just purchased an SBGA299 that is spring drive but simple white dial. Love GS too. Have a good time with your new watch! Regards from Hungary. Tony
Beautiful dial Bruce. I'm a fan of the Omiwatari SBGY007. Obviously a different case and movement , but GS is a master of lighter hues. The Shunbun and your baby blue are great examples. Hope to see you wearing it at a HSU event soon.
I'm here a year later, and the Sea of Clouds is sold out and I just bought from the secondary market. Hearing you talk about fearing having to do that with the Peacock had me rolling 😂.
Just got it as well. It’s a nice watch. After having lots of GS I have to say the 44GS case is awesome. There is no reason to pay 2x for the same watch just with a high beat. They don’t use micro adjustments so these 9F ones are thinner and jr makes a difference with these bracletes
Their watches are amazing, however, there lack of line and their bracelet design with no micro adjustments detract which is arguably a fantastic timepiece. Those are the reasons I haven’t purchased these particular models.
I have an 017 and love it. Had it on a light grey suede strap (feather light) all winter and am about to switch back to the bracelet. Accuracy is closer to 0-2 spy than 5. I agree on the screw down crown, I'd prefer it, but I'm not wearing this kayaking or to the beach, so I can live with it. Probably my "prettiest" watch and it actually gets noticed by people / has a little bling to it.
The skeleton case quartz is completely unique and VERY cool. Mine has a damned lion on the back . . . I did _not_ ask for some absurd lion on my watch even if my name is ‘Catt’ 🙄
I have just gifted myself an SLGH 013G and I can guarantee you that it is one of the most beautiful watches that I have seen, much less owned, Apart from the looks it also has the revolutionary 9SA5A movement and of course oodles of Zaratsu polished surfaces...This high beat GS is truly a winner
When you consider your getting all the same elements on this watch and their fitting this piece accurate to 5 seconds a year with an open caseback , what's not to like. Super watch Bruce congratulations.
I feel your passion brother. I can't imagine anyone watching this could argue with your taste in time pieces. And just to say....if not for the fact that I'm still on my honeymoon (2-months❤) with my "Longines Spirit 42, Blue Sunray" with it's quirky, truncated Arabic '3' (which I love)... ....I most certainly would be ponying up $3800 for my own Grand Seiko, and just like yours. WOWZER😎 (Only Grand Seiko could transform a quartz Moment in to a piece of museum quality art). Congratulations 🎉🎊🎉😂
It was a super tough decision for me, but I recently went with the SBGM 247. The 9S auto GMT with the olive green dial... and I loooove it! I also totally see what you're saying though, as the quartz version is STILL on my mind!🤤
The 9F is my grail movement. I have an interest in quartz, even if 99.999% of quartz are mass produced and "not special", I still see them as what they are, the objectively best watch movements out there (and then you can argue what's best out of battery (9F), solar (cal.0100) or spring drive (9R) after that). And thus I appreciate that we at all have some high level versions of them that can command (at least to me) a similar kind of admiration as a well crafted mechanical movement do.
Great video. Man do I love Grand Seiko. But I soo wish they had different hand sets, especially for the seconds hand. I like when the seconds hand is more prominent with an arrow or triangle or some kind of pip for legibility and preciseness; that would be- inserted chef's kiss- just a magical thing to see on their spring drive or these incredibly precise quartz movements. I think you've made a very wise choice - which I saw coming 😊 It appears to be both a heart and head decision too which is ideal surely. Hopefully I'll be lucky enough to aquire a GS soon 🤞
Just sold a SBGA375 bc it wasn’t scratching the GS itch enough… wanted spring drive and 44GS and there weren’t many options but the dial wasn’t GS’y enough for me. Might have to just get a snowflake and this 9F 44GS some day and have a duo that hits all the things I want from the brand.
So Is this one of the new Collection with the Cartier and the Rolex, or was this sold too.. I think this watch is one of my dream watches. I'll never be a collector that gets into severe high cost. but i do find myself always going back to seiko divers and grand seiko for what i want to wear
The thing that would keep me from buying used GS or indeed paying thousands for GS is that those noticeable hairlines are likely to take away the enjoyment of a key selling point of the watch in very little time of wear. That seems like such a risk when buying polished perfection when not also specifically hardened for regular use over time. Does that make dressy GS watches more like home museum pieces? I fear that is the case, so even if I wanted to spend big money on one, I think I might ultimately always decide it's not worth it. That said, this does apply to virtually all watches above a certain price point to me. I generally wnmabt all my watches to be daily wearers and I don't want daily wear and tear to be too strongly associated with a loss of enjoyment or monetary value.
I feel like Seiko should create gold-plated/colored GS branded batteries. The movement would look much better. Especially since they decided to create some quartz models with an open back.
I would stick to the quartz and spring drive movements. Very happy with my white birch spring drive. Disappointed with accuracy of SLGH013 hi-beat movement.
The movement of the hand does feel slightly like a water droplet. Just a little less sharp than the usual quartz tick. However, hm, I still prefer a sweep.
Lovely, but I don’t like all of high polish on the lugs. It looks great for about a week before it’s all scratched up just from wearing it under a sleeve
If I ever got one it would be a spring drive. Such clever movement technology and accuracy. I’m not impressed with their bracelet designs though and that’s a deal breaker for me. I dislike watch straps.
You know when you get something out of a drawer that’s been sat there for years with a batter in and the battery has spilt acid and destroyed the whole thing? Wouldn’t that possibly happen here? Obviously not if it’s well cared for and worn
Love the watch but I just cannot convince myself to get a quartz movement watch above the $1000 mark or rather $500 I know quartz is easy to maintain plus the accuracy is on point, but there is something about the mechanical and automatic movement that quartz just cannot justify
I own SBGN003 quartz GMT. I think a keeper as its quite thin. The spring drive GMT SBGE255 I sold as its too thick. So fully understand you Bruce. A great purchase
