A GS Giveaway 👀
Gary, you’re a legend m8! 🚀🚀🚀
Good luck everyone!
Wow....great piece. I'm a sucker for vintage watches. Pls consider me for the giveaway. Pls carry on Gary!!!
I love the fact that Grand Seiko have elevated the humble quartz movement to this level. The attention to detail here is bonkers. Keep the reviews coming!
All GS cases including this one are Zaratsu polished.
Another interesting fact, this dial (which they call Silk Sun Ray) is their most complex and labour intensive dial (more than the patterned ones).
very interesting, do you have any info you can share on the Silk Sun Ray process? I'd definitely like to read about it.
I am a sucker for a beautiful champagne dial. And thank you so much for educating us on that spectacular quartz movement. Really opened my eyes.
GS 9F Quartz watches are so underappreciated and neglected. And the technical data list is just bonkers!
I bought the Silver dial version for my daughter and it is a stunner also. The dial takes on the colour of its surroundings. I am so impressed with GS quartz timepieces that I have just ordered the new limited edition SBGP017. 'Sea of Clouds' blue dial with the 9F85 movement. Interestingly, it also has a display case back. Expensive but a beautiful looking, and , expectedly, performing piece. I am hoping that this may be the start of GS producing high quality quartz watches with some of their gorgeous textured dials.
@@polygoncoco I ordered mine direct from the Grand Seiko Boutique website. I don't think it appears on GS dealers pages, only the Boutique site. It looks superb, delivery in July
Lots of other watches are thermocompensated including watches from omega, citizen and eta based watches.
Citizen make a movement that is accurate to 1 sec a year and you can get an eta based chronograph with thermocompensation and a stated 10s a year accuracy which has 27 jewels for hundreds of dollars not thousands.
I love the look of the grand Seiko but I'd prefer an automatic after having horrible experience with Jewelers destroying my watches just to service the battery. Watchmakers are very few in between.
@@murph8411 What you say is true however, in my opinion, there is more to buying a watch than accuracy. How it looks, the quality of the manufacturing and components, how it feels on the wrist and most importantly, how I feel when I am wearing it. The watches I buy and wear say 'buy me' when I see them, as in this case. Most pieces do nothing for me. At the end of the day you buy what you like, not what others think you should buy. There is no wrong or right, except for paying 8 X retail for a Rolex OP, that is just wrong!
I have a 1977 King Quartz. (In early 70s Seiko rebranded Grand Seiko and King Seiko to Grand Quartz and King Quartz as Quartz was so far superior to mechanical movements.) The movement keeps perfect time over the several years that I've owned it. It was rated at +/- 10 seconds per month from factory, but much better than that. 45 years old, no issues.
I think I disagree with you about the empty space on the bottom of the dial. It’s something we are used to seeing but this dial is so gorgeous that being empty gives you more visually to appreciate.
Came across this while surfing the net. It’ll be my next purchase unless I change my mind and go for a mechanical one. That dial is what caught my eye as well as the brushed finish and polish.
So many things to say about this video. Firstly - thank you; your love of watches in general and appreciation of this piece in particular makes the factual content very easy to watch. If you did a 45 minute video on this watch, maybe including some q/a with some of the other people you mentioned, I would watch it! 😁
Secondly - ah Seiko.... All the content about the movement and the indices (they're diffraction gratings) is why I fell in love with Seiko; all the comments on the bracelet on a watch costing $2k are why I fell out of love with Seiko (I'm now down to 2 from 'embarrassing' - both solar quartz).
Thirdly - quartz movements - keep going. The fact (and it is a fact) is that all quartz movements are far, far more complex than the lossy 400 year old technology on which mechanical watch movements are based. We tend to forget that when the Astron was released in 1969 it cost the inflation-adjusted equivalent of about $12k. Quartz movements are not inherently cheap; they're cheap now as a result of the microprocessor and printed circuit manufacturing revolution - itself a miracle of modern science and mass manufacturing technology that we take for granted. Probably the best video I've seen on quartz movements is on Steve Mould's channel - but even he glosses over the small matter of analog to digital conversion, miniaturised in a wristwatch in 1969. For anyone reading this who may be sceptical, I honestly believe that once you understand what's going on inside a quartz movement, your appreciation of them, and what Seiko actually achieved back in 1969, will grow exponentially.
Great feedback, thank you!
Great comment. There is a lot of snobbery in the watch community about quartz movements. Yes, they are now two-a-penny but like you said it’s amazing technology and this movement featured is very high tech and probably had a lot of R&D money put into it. Also people forget that GS have a great deal of hand finishing put into their watches. People are happy to praise the so called ‘value’ of a £2K Swiss watch like an Oris with a £120 Sellita automatic movement inside it but fail to realise just what good value a similarly priced but FAR better finished GS is.
@@jacc88888 I did wonder what feedback the comment might get, so I thank you for yours. Just in case I haven't poked this wasps nest enough though 🙂: the snobbery is a shame because those with it are missing out. Small prejudices are easy to change though with a bit of knowledge, which is why the lack of info on Seiko's website is so bizarre.
Whenever I engage with or read anything about quartz snobbery, I'm always reminded of the 'non-watch' person conversation every enthusiast has had - that one where you start gushing to a normal person about the expensive Swiss thing on your wrist, trying to get them interested. At some point they ask the obvious question about accuracy and you have to admit your $4k automatic heritage Swiss timepiece is less accurate over time than a $20 quartz watch, and you can see them slowly reaching for their phone to call the local asylum and have you committed. Happy days...🤣
This is a luxury watch, with history and great craftsmanship. If all quartz mechanisms would look like this one I'm sure they will receive much more love.
Having just recently got 'properly' into watches..i always thought quartz was the cheapo lame.. fall to pieces kind of thing.. oooh how wrong I was!.. now..im dying to get a HAQ in my collection.. I have some half decent quartz movements..but they're just basic compared to these beauties..
I have the 263 as well. It’s quality is mind blowing and it wears so incredibly well on smaller wrists. ❤️ Even those who hate quartz have to admire the sheer engineering GS took in creating the 9F movement. It was at the time quite literally the pinnacle of the technology, and others still struggle to match it to this day.
Agreed!
Is the dial easier to read at glance??
Fascinating the accuracy of this watch as well as how the mechanisms work. Amazing! Thank you for sharing. Great review!
I bought the SBGX285 while I was in Osaka, 2019. Similar to your watch, limited edition. Negotiated 10% discount and no vat. Beautiful watch and a joy to wear. No battery needed yet!! Gained one second since I bought it. I fitted an expensive lightweight red/scarlet strap, I get so many comments on it. Perfect quartz watch
Sounds incredible
Man... called out on the "Quick to dismiss all quartz watches!" but honestly sold on that beauty of an inhouse quartz movement by GS! Always wanted a Grand Seiko ever since owning a Seiko SARB033. One day perhaps! 😀
This watch is simply sublime. High-accuracy quartz definitely deserves more respect.
Sublime. I think this ticks all the boxes. High accuracy, and beautiful attention to detail. And having a luxury quartz piece would be a stellar addition to any collection.
I do agree that every watch enthusiast should have at least one quartz watch in their collection. Thank you Gary for reviewing this particular beauty, and explaining a lot of things I didn’t know about this particular movement 👏🏼👌🙏🏼
this video really opened my eyes to these high end quartz watches, I never gave quartz a chance tbh, always saw them as "cheap".. now.. I'm really hooked on these HPQ..HAQ's ..
Have to say I have never understood the reverence so many watch fans have for Grand Seiko, never thought they were in the same class as Rolex, Omega, etc, until I watched this video. I was wrong, am extremely impressed and they clearly belong, perhaps even leading the class given the price. Thanks for the education Gary!
I was saying similar when I watched this.. but with quartz.. I love Seiko.. grand Seiko I never really looked at, but QUARTZ??. I hated quartz, I didn't really consider the high quality stuff till watching this.
For those who do not want to worry about a battery and jumping seconds hand, there is the Spring Drive with 9R65 movements with an automatic rotor with sweeping seconds hand and the prices of GS models with these inside are rising. Seiko as a brand are a separate entity. Grand Seiko is in a stratosphere of their own. It took me quite some time to really get to know what they are all about and glad I did.
I would love a spring drive GS but out of my budget at present. That said, regarding this watch featured I love the idea of having a watch to hand that will always be running and that will be so accurate that it would only need adjusting when you travel to a different time zone or for daylight saving time purposes. The accuracy of this thing is mind blowing.
I love the spring drives.. incredible mechanisms!.. I'm falling in live with these high end quartz too
I tried one of these on in a Seiko boutique and the titanium case and bracelet make the watch lightweight and comfortable to wear for extended periods.
GS is truly second to none. I started in this hobby just collecting quartz pieces but once I learned about GS it really made me start appreciating the top end of horology today.
I've always preferred quartz over mechanical, but is honestly so difficult to find great quality quartz, or to find microbrands that use quartz movements in as unique ways as they do NH35s and Miyota 9015s. Such a stunning piece you have there Gary
quartz is better. keeps better time of course. gives the watchmaker an opportunity to preportion a watch case proplerly. the industry cons their consumers to mechs, mechs need service every few years. the mark goes to the shop sends it away and buys another watch while they r waiting weeks for their watch to get back
As an electric wheelchair user who never swing my arms I really can't use watches with automatic movements unless they are hand-windable, but that gets irritating over time. That's why quartz movements are so nice to me. Many fine timepieces are only offered with automatic movements, so it's so amazing that Grand Seiko offers quartz watches that look this good. I can feel like I wear a million bucks whiteout all the hassle!
There are some absolutely beautiful Grand Seiko’s available, but…every time I look at the prices I think ‘If I’m going to spend that, why wouldn’t I go with another brand?’. I am coming around and getting closer and closer to grabbing one but that idea is still present.
Didn’t expect this channel to go from Ali Express watches straight to Seiko. 😊
On a more serious note, thank you for the detailed presentation of the 9F movement. Many so called watch connoisseurs dismiss these for the simple reason of them being quartz.
Also wanted to mention that the champagne dials are among GS’s most complicated to produce, with almost twice the manufacturing steps than the others.
I produced many non Ali watch videos…my Seiko Saturday videos were always my most popular…nice to mix it up, glad you appreciated it…thanks for watching!
@@ilikewatchesPretty please do more Seiko Saturdays, it's feeding my Seiko addiction 🙄
Love it. My fave though is the Citizen 0100. + - 1 second per year. Cheers.
Brings a whole new meaning to be the in two ticks ! You’d be there a tick early!
19mm lug is common in vintage Seiko actually and many omega. Still odd to see in modern but not surprising either. Possibly a proportion thing to go with the odd 37mm case. I’ve owned many 36 and 38 but never a 37!
Stunning watch and yes the technology is breathtaking in what they can do with quartz .
I have a Seiko Grand Quartz from the 70’s in 37mm. Gold capped, looks practically brand new. Not everyone wants a to wear a clock on their wrist. In fact the 36mm is roaring back in popularity ( just look at all the Explorer style 36mm’s that won’t stay in stock). I am ok with large divers, but not in dressier timepieces. I also have a Seiko Grand Quartz with the silvery snowflake face in 36. And my Gold GS Quartz is a vintage 36mm!
Loving the reviews Gary! Funny that this is the most modest offering of Grand Seiko, yet is at the high end of my budget. LOL. Gorgeous piece, and exquisite workmanship.
As an owner of an Omega quartz for 34 years with it still going strong and accurate with only regular battery changes over those years, I fail to understand the mechanical snobbery originally cultivated by a dying Swiss industry. It's a beautiful watch with a wonderful movement .
Its only "SHOCKIN".. to you, because you follow nonsense. Why would quartz be cheap?. What makes a quartz movement cheap in your mind?. Please seriously explain? . i would love a very nice quartz movement. One day ill have one.
@@silverghost4206 Have You always been this socially awkward?..please explain.
So.. because someone who maybe didn't have the luxury of being taught what different watch movements are that You can try and pull that 'watch snob' BS on Me?.. alright Geoffrey.. look for another target.
@@mrmagoo.3678 An what "watch snob" deities did i show to you?. Wow you sure a special one.
@@silverghost4206 Jog on Geoffrey.. find someone else to explaine how knowledgable you are to.
Fantastic video, Gary - thank you for making this. I was very close to buying this when we swapped messages on IG about the watch being discontinued, so I decided to get it. During my final research I discovered the GS SBGT235, which is a JDM model and exactly the same as the SBGX263, but with an English / Kanji day complication and a dressier bracelet with polished links. The day/date means there’s less empty space on the dial (something that concerned me about the SBGX263) and as I wanted a dressier piece the bracelet upgrade suited me. I received the watch on Monday and I absolutely love it. The size, fit and finish are magnificent. Wear yours in good health, Gary - looks great on your wrist.
Amazing sounds like you got the perfect watch!
It's still crazy to me that so many people don't like quartz! I know that sweeping seconds hand on mechanicals is mesmerizing, but there's always room for both in the collection!
But it's just by association because quartz gets a bad rap by people who know only a little about watches. I doubt the actual movement of a tick tick second hand winds many people up!
In the 70's as a kid I remember my uncle splashing out on his first quartz Seiko. Such a thing was made about its accuracy, not having to be wound etc and everyone wanted one. Now everyone wants an automatic again which is less accurate and bit of a faff unless you then go out and buy an automatic winder. It's a funny old World. I'm guessing my grand kids will want a classic inspired quartz again.
Very true, and while it’s still quite niche high end quartz movements are definitely gaining ground.
The more I look at GS quartz (esp. in the metal), the more I find myself wanting one for my collection 🔥
Same here.. I've always been a mechanical movement addict.. but after looking into these higher end ultra accurate movements..I'm sold! I REALLY want one now!
Interesting watch - thanks for the info. Made me appreciate these watches more. The finishing is superb. But....... can't help feeling that the end product is just very bland. I dont like my watches to be too 'blingy' but this one take subtlety to a whole new level. 🙂
amazing how that this watch seems to grow onto you as time goes by, been revisiting this review again and again and this watch just seems to grown despite its understatedness
I would not be surprised at all if Seiko actually discontinued this model, re-released it under another reference at twice the price...a very Seiko thing to do 🤔🤔
I really think this piece might help me getting over my one-tick-per-second allergy... Because in terms of size, proportions, looks (that dial...) and technical prowess this is, well, pretty much perfection for a reasonable price. Thanks for the review!
For me personally I feel like there's something satisfying about the second hand hitting the marks perfectly 😄
@@R023N yeah there's something even better to it than the smoothest of smoothest hand sweeps
I believe that these quartz versions from big brands must not be written off as something cheap. Some of them can be as, or even more complicated then an entry level mechanical watch, plus the same amount of detail and work goes into them. Also, they can be a great alternative for someone who is looking for a piece from that particular brand, but can't afford their normal versions.
Overall, a great looking watch, I really like Grand Seiko's offerings.
Cheers, Gary!
Just look at their bracelets, cheap trash
@@videowatch399 Aah. Ok, cool.
Their bracelets are superb. You’re obviously a non-Grand Seiko owner my Grand Seiko blows away my Omega, my Rolex and my Tudor.
@@videowatch399 says who? People say they are not as good as Rolex bracelets but hardly trash.
@@jacc88888 did you watch this video?
This video showed me an impressive product. I liked the information about it!
As advanced as the movement is, I'd prefer the same watch with a £19 meca-quartz movement giving the appearance of a sweeping hand, I suppose Seiko don't want to potentially damage the sales of the mechanical watches.
A good looking (if very plain) well made watch, no doubt - but every time I'd look at it, I would see a £2000 quartz watch.
Thanks for sharing Gary.
Great video!
Unfortunate that the second hand doesn't land centered on the indices. A truly impressive movement. Seiko really does know how to make nice hands.
It must be a camera angle thing. It's one of the selling points that GS boutiques have told me before lol. My '89 GS quartz lands bang on the indices and that soldiers been ticking for 30+ years
@@rajgill7576 yeah hopefully, it seemed like it was very consistently a bit off, so maybe it is the camera.
Still can’t believe it’s been unclaimed!! Beauty of a watch Gary!
First 🤗
Congrats on an awesome purchase. Fantastic watch.
I just purchased the more hard to obtain and desirable 40mm version of this watch. Wanted a luxury quartz and this seemed to be the ticket. Went champagne for something different. Champagne dials are one of the hardest and longest time to make according to seiko supposedly. 40mm moves the bracelet up to 20mm. £1200 new in box from Chrono24 in Japan. Can’t beat that for the money…
That’s amazing value.
What did you have to pay on top of the retail price to bring it over to the uk?
Great looking watch! If Seiko made an affordable version of this with the mecaquartz movement I'd be all over it. As nice as the GS is, it still looks like it ticks once a second, and that would thoroughly piss me off after spending 2 bags
Fwiw you won’t see the hand land between second hashes, it’s dead on every time.
I suppose they could copy Bulova Precisionist watches with 8 or whatever advances of the second hand per second… sadly they’re not all that precise. Mine typically gains five seconds per month.
...of course, if I won this watch, I wouldn't be thoroughly pissed off at all 😄
So excited to see this watch in person one day and try it on wrist.
Have to say , you had me hooked when I heard grand Seiko, then lost me at quartz. Cheers Gary
Shame I lost you because this movement is fascinating….not like standard Quartz movements
Your loss Brian
A pity.
$2200 "cheapest". Yikes.
This time, the time is now. The fascinating GS SBGX263 really excites me!!
Thanks for the great video review! I'm curious, what size is your wrist? Does this 37mm feel like the right dimension for this watch, or would you prefer a larger/smaller design?
Thanks for still trying to do the right thing and complete the giveaway of this great watch!
Fingers crossed, Grand Seiko’s quartz offerings are so cool
Since finding your channel I've bought 7 San martin watches.
I don't know if I should thank you or blame you for my new addiction.
I love your videos
Fourth time lucky! I can't believe so many people would pass up the opportunity to own such a lovely watch.
One of the most beautiful watches ever. Pure Japanese class. Owning a Grand Seiko would be a dream come true.
Hey Gary, putting my comment in for the random selection
Excellent review, I'm a new subscriber and I enjoy your sober and down to earth approach to watches. Fingers crossed for the giveaway! 🤞🏻
Can’t believe how difficult it’s been for you to give this away, it’s an amazing watch and brilliant value too!
My perception of the Grand Seiko changed the day I saw one in the flesh for the first time. People underestimate them a lot. Can't wait to get me one! Love your channel!
I'm partial to quartz watches. Having a luxury level quartz watch on my wrist (for free!) sounds wonderful. Thanks.
this is the first quartz watch I really like :)!
The details and clean simplicity on the Grand Seikos are beautiful. Can't afford the price tag though!
This is the epitome of the one watch collection, (if you are not in a manual profession obviously) the best watch to wear everyday, anywhere. Beauty, class, sophisticated simplicity.....what more you need? Just this watch.
Stunning watch - I remember one of your first videos you wore a GS similar to this (think you were in a pub at some point). Was that given away too? It struck me as interesting as you were reviewing cadisens and san martins at the time. Is there a "luxury" watch that you still owe or are looking to acquire?
Fantastic watch and too nice to let it slip away. Here's hoping round 4 is the lucky one!
Cor blimey, this is a cracking giveaway of a gorgeous watch. Well out of my price range, and I can only dream of owning a dress watch like this 😄
I can't believe that people didn'ttake this watch for free. What a beautiful timepiece, I would love to have one.⌚
I enjoyed your watch review very much. The one thing you feared I think is happening. A few days ago (early Feb 2024) they announced a new watch, the sbgx355. This quartz watch is more expensive than the sbgx263 even though it uses the same 9F62 quartz movement. Granted it is made in high-intensity titanium and has a dial reminiscent of the "Snowflake". The listed price of the watch is 3800 (USD) or 3700 (GBP). I\'m pretty set on picking up the sbgx263 this weekend. I live in Tokyo and there seems to be less and less inventory online. Please keep up the great work and I look forward to seeing your review on the sbgx355. Cheers.
Lovely watch, and thanks for persevering with the give aways. I think my Dad would absolutely love this watch (he's 100% a quartz guy). =D
I can't believe people aren't claiming this watch. It's an amazing watch and I would love to own it.
I was given the green light to pick a watch for my 40th…. A reasonable one. Hahah. I went with the Seiko Tuna. I really wrestled with getting a good automatic/mechanical. I love everything about them, but it was reviews like this about how good seiko’s quartz watches are and how much history went into the the Tuna’s 7c46 movement. I just had to set my flag there. Wished I could get a grand seiko, would love a spring drive but it isn’t in the cards. Love this watch for it simplicity in appearance and hidden complexity in the attention to detail! Great review.
The ultimate quartz watch. Every man should own one nice mechanical dress watch, but this has to be the best daily driver. It's got it all!
Beautiful watch. Very reminiscent of my first watch, a Seiko my parents bought me in about 1970. at the time it cost around $75, about $580 today according to google.
Can’t believe nobody has claimed this yet!! Good luck to all who enter, and thanks for the wonderful opportunity Gary! Cheers🥂
I can't believe this hasn't been claimed yet, it's beautiful!
Gary, I can't believe this watch has gone unclaimed so many times! I love the dial color!
I can't belive how hard this has been but it keeps me in the game so I'm happy! I'm all in Gary! Cheers!
Usually I'm not one for dressier watches, but I love how clean this one is
This is Insane!!! Thanks!! Grand Seiko is incredible. The best finish I´ve seen.
Man, people who miss out to take this timepiece are not true watch lovers. Best giveaway on youtube watch community ever.⌚
What an outstanding watch, it's so much better than the standard models.
Is the third time the charm?! Lovely of you to give away watches, and GS no less!
Quartz doesn't normally get me going, but there are a few exceptions, e.g. the sheer practicality of solar, as well as truly long-battery-life movements, but also the high-precision quartz from Citizen, though I'd struggle to make a case for the expenditure. Thank you for making it so clear what is special about these movements. That is a level of care I feel is on a par with developing mechanical movements in-house, and no, that should not surprise perhaps from Grand Seiko, but I didn't know, so that is very welcome. For me this watch subsequently brings together a lot of what makes Grand Seiko designs compelling. I'm not immediately fond of this date, but the handset and indices have all the hallmarks I have come to appreciate in Grand Seiko and would love to experience in real life some time. Add to that a relatively simple case with very good wearable proportions, and this is becoming quite compelling, if really not that affordable. I actually don't really agree with the weaknesses, except for that bracelet and the lack of info on the Grand Seiko website. What is up with that? I also don't find it particularly intuitive to find Grand Seikos I like using their website. But then again, it's kind of like phantom shopping when I can really splurge that much on a watch...
Grand Seiko is on another level. They don't call it Grand for nothing. Your content is very informative and educational. I truly appreciate the time you spent and enjoyed this video. I'll be WATCHing more.
Glad to see this is still up for grabs! Love the precision of the seconds hand, not to mention everything else. Cheers
This is about to be your most commented on video ever! Somebody win that watch!
This is an amazing watch.
Can't believe how much effort this giveaway is costing you. I absolutely love the watch and would be thrilled to be picked as the lucky winner!
Amazing that you are still trying to give this away. I'm happy to have another chance though!
I really love what they have done with this watch. Really great dial like every Grand Seiko but what a fantastic movement. My oh my!
Never thought to look at a Grand Seiko with a quartz. Seems like an awesome daily watch!
I can't imagine missing out on this beautiful watch. It's a great everyday watch.
Thanks again for the chance. This watch is incredible and a great every day piece.
A quartz with that much of finishing on the movement tells a lot about the attention to detail of GS😍
The great unclaimed watch. This watch needs its own channel. Gone in 60 seconds..er no 10+ months actually. Who knew it would so hard to give stuff away 😃
Grand Seiko is truly incredible. They're making every other company in their price range look like they stand still. Bravo. Incredible watch, beautiful finish!
Incredibly generous of you Gary to be giving away this incredible Grand Seiko. Hopefully you will finally find a winner this time round!
A lovely video thanks. The technology level of high end quartz movements was new to me. The finish of the watch looked like a Seiko but finish level turned to the max. Thanks again.
Quite sad that the previous winners didn't claim the prize. Thank you still, Gary, for your generosity. More power to you!
