Had an urge today to look up the cartoons I used to watch before heading off to preschool in the morning, and here I find all these people talking about the Force Five group. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.
Thanks for watching my videos Nate! I hope you enjoyed the other videos in the series about Spaceketeers, Starvengers, GaiKing and Grandizer! I've got more videos on the way. Please consider subscribing if you haven't yet.
o was my favorite of the Force Five series. I remember watching it Force Five every afternoon after school on Boston station 25 and then right after watch Starblazers. I loved going to Mr Bigs toyland with my parents. We went ever so ofter since it was an hour away from where we lived.
Thanks for watching @john Currier! Ah GaiKing, I was really in awe of the space dragon! I remember the first episode when the leave Ares to fend for himself, I was literally like "JERKS!!!!" I so wanted the Giant Shogun Warrior toys, specifically the Starvengers and GaiKing. Ah, childhood! Thanks again for watching John, consider subscribing as I have more videos on the way!
@john7713593 was / is Mr. Big’s Toyland near South Station ? I think you might’ve just cased me to remember memories from when I was two or three years old…
I had know idea this was a show!! Lol I saw this as an all in one movie overseas as a military brat in the 80’s. This show holds a near and dear place in my heart!!
The show was able to expand on a lot of the characters and was a lot of fun. The movie was just a re-edited version of several key episodes in the story. But was also a really good cartoon in and of itself 😁 You had a great childhood my friend!
Yes I saw these as “movies” on believe it or not HBO! They would run once a week at like 3am central time. This was in the early 80s. I managed to record them and I saved them till the 2000s and I hooked up my VCR to my PC and digitized them. Sadly some bad things happened and I no longer have the VHS copies or the digital ones either 😕 I was hoping that someone would post them online…
I'm from PH 🇵🇭 I saw this over and over from 1989 to 1991 early '92 maybe. in movie form English dub. Last time I saw it was 95? This was the only mecha I saw as a kid. What's funny was my childhood friends told me this is Macross. So for over 30 years I thought this was Macross. I was obsessed with this. Around the same time I was also obsessed with Madonna's like that prayer song. 😂 I put these two together in my fond memoriesas a kid. Good times
I remember actually watching this as a kid. Mondays were Danguard Ace, Tues was either Starvengers or Grandizer(can't remember), Wednesday was the stupid one where they didn't even have robots, Thurs was either Grand/Starvengers(can't remember) and Friday was Gaiking.
Spaceketeers (The stupid one lol). WOW Mike C you even remember the days of the week each one aired on that's amazing! Thanks for watching and commenting on my video Mike! If you haven't already please consider subscribing, I've got more videos on the way!
@retro cynical DUUUUDE!!!! I'd love to see your collection! I remember those Shogun Warriors, so wanted one when I was little! Thanks for watching dude!
So it's now 2020, I'm 46 yrs old. When I was a little kid I was all about gaiking. I've looked all over for the original gaiking action figure that I had when I was a little guy.
Thanks for watching and commenting on my video Garth! I Wanted a GaiKing figure for SO long!!! lol I'll be doing a review of my Soul of Chogokin Dai cast collectable Gki King. If you haven't yet please consider subscribing, I've got more videos on the way! 😊
It's nice to revisit the cartoons I grew up with. Things may be more sophisticated these days, but it was pretty good for it's time. I grin like an idiot when I hear those theme songs. I still remember them!
Thanks for watching and commeting @Geoffrey Herrick, I wish I could just grin. I end up da da da-ing the WHOLE song to myself (even when people are in the room haha) I look funny but I don't care 😜 Thanks again and consider subscribing, I've got more videos on the way!
I remember watching this during my trips to Hong Kong when I was preteen in the 1980s. I grew up in the UK, and we had Tom and Jerry, Yogi bear etc. This transforming robot stuff was amazing. I had some toys that I think were Mazinger - I've no idea where they are now. Now and again, I'm always tempted to buy models from the internet/ auction site but that'd probably be too nerdy. Cheers.
thanks jay!!! loved it..boy does it bring back memories... racing home from school to watch all force 5 shows..mon-danguard ace, tue-star vengers, wed- space kateers, thur- grandizer (MY FAV!!!) fri- gaking...starblazers was on right after that...any chance you can do a review on that show? at least the first two parts ( bolar wars suxxxxx lol) anyways..thanks again Jay..keep up the great work!!
@Mikey P Thanks man! Yes those were the days, such awesome times. Hmmm Starblazers, Man that's one I'll have to re-watch hahaha. Love Leji Masumoto's stuff though, so it won't be that hard! Thanks for the encouragement Mikey!
I loved these as a kid! I only ever saw them as movies. These movies were really three episodes edited together. One line I remember that was so funny at the time was the Gaiking Robot pilot exclaiming “Zelons on Mount Saint Helens!” In reality the real Mt. St. Helens erupted and filled the atmosphere with ash so St. Helens was known by most Americans. I love giant robots I wish they would come back.
I remember growing up in Germany watching AFN the first anime I ever watched was Gaiking, I was hooked from then on, but my favorites are Starvengers and Grendizer.
Its funny Gaiking's theme is also used as the end credits for Starvengers ;-) Thanks for commenting @Danguardace17 (awesome name!) Did you check out my Danguard Ace review? I think you'd enjoy it!
The sound bite with the horns for gaiking was amazing .. there is always a shot with the dragon and characters in foreground and a huge sunset ... then horns ... amazing
there is another Mecha anime called Magne Robo gakeen made by Toei Animation in 1976 the same year that they did Gaiking Magne robo Gakeen with 39 episodes that became known in the United States as Magnos the robot this is very good too
OH Magnos! There are a lot of Chogokin robots I wish I was able to watch growing up, now its SUPER hard to find episodes of these Gems. I wish a company somewhere could license these classics and release them on BluRay here in North America! Thanks for reminding me of Magnos Rafael!
Holy cow I loved Force 5. I don't believe it was on UK TV - But I rented the tapes _dozens_ of times from the local video store and in the end the store donated them to me because "My dad was the only person to rent them ever" which I thought was a bit of class on their part.
That is an AMAZING story Jamie! I wish my Video99 store owner would have let me keep the Starvengers Video I kept renting hahaha. I don't suppose you still have it? That store was amazing for sure! Thanks for watching and commenting on my video Jamie, please consider subscribing if you haven't already. I've got more videos on the way! 😊
Trying to remember and find an 80s anime where one of the guys had these two sticks with oval balls at the ends and he would put together and it would become a large bolo staff and he would shout lightning and thunder?
I will have to do a follow up video were I go more indepth with all of the aspects of the Team and their vehicles. Thanks for watching and commenting on my video Akarat! If you have't yet please consider subscribing, I've got more videos on the way! 😊
I wish I knew how too @jard123 something I've been hoping for years. The closest we can get is a re-release from shout factory which is a NEW dub not the original from Jim Terry. I found this on Amazon, not sure if its dub or not but its the closes thing I could find: www.amazon.com/Gaiking-Complete-Original-1976-TV/dp/B01D9T0D5U/ thanks again for watching and commenting on my video jard123 please consider subscribing if you haven't yet. I've got more videos on the way!
The story chronicled the battle between the crew of the semi-transformable carrier Daikū Maryū[ and the Super Robot Gaiking invented by Dr. Daimonji against an invading race of aliens called the Dark Horror Army. This army hails from the planet Zela whose home planet is facing destruction by their star, Sigma, turning into a black hole as their population starts to become extinct. Notable aspects of the series include the dinosaur-based designs of the Daikū Maryū and its support machines and the use of part of the carrier to form the main robot. The robot Gaiking was piloted by former baseball star named Sanshiro Tsuwabuki[d] who was drafted for the job because his latent psychic powers made him the only one capable of doing so, all other similarly empowered candidates having been assassinated by alien agents with he himself having been injured in an attack that ended his sports career. Gaiking is most easily distinguished from other mecha by its skull-shaped golden torso formed from the head of the Daikū Maryū and its golden horns. The leader of the Dark Horror Army was a robot scientist named Darius The Great and all of their ships and mecha were fish-shaped, which most likely inspired the Darius series of video games. He uses four giant robotic leaders called the Death Cross Generals composed of Dr. Dankel, General Asimov, General Killer, and General Desmont. These generals used bomber-like spaceships called Grotectors to create artificial black hole vortexes to travel to Earth and back. Throughout the series the Death Cross Generals and Darius note that natives of Zela originally came to Earth for research purposes before slowly colonizing the planet and using it to hide various dark monsters with the rise of humanity, as far back as one million years before the start of the series until the twelfth century AD. For their military natives of Zela were brainwashed and genetically altered into birdmen called the dark avians with elite individuals becoming dark knights.
Ah Fridays the 5 in Force 5!!!! Riiiiiggghhhhtttt?!!!! Time to bring in a NEW force Five!!! hmmm.... Thanks for watching LaughingMan! Please consider subscribing I've got more videos on the way! 😊
You forgot to mention the three support fighters: Skylar, Rhinotar and Dinotar. Plus, in the Force Five movie Gaiking, in the final battle Gaiking throws a wicked curveball to destroy Darius The Great.
haha you are SO right RK831! This was one of my first videos so I was just learning how to do videos at the time. I'm planning on doing another look back at force five someday, I hope you'll look forward to it! Thanks for watching and commenting on my video!
Was there an episode with a girl thar was an android that was part of the pegasus project 🤔 they used the pegasus flame to break through a massive wall 🧱?
Man you didn't even mention that the pilot of the robot was also the world's greatest baseball pitcher. The aliens tried to kill him when he on the mound pitching. He got shot in his pitching arm and he had to retire. Right after that he became the robot pilot. And if you pay close attention to his baseball uniform and his haircut you would clearly see that he looked just like a cartoon version of the hall of fame pitcher Dennis Eckersly when he was on the Boston Red Sox in the early 1980's which is ironically when this cartoon used to air in Massachusetts where I'm from.
You should watch Gaiking: The Legend of Daiku Maryu which is a reboot and it really turn Gaiking from generic super robot to almost Gaogaigar level awesomeness! Sure, the main pilot is a kid named Daiya Tsuwabaki but he is voiced by Tanaka "Luffy" Mayumi so you can hear Luffy's hot bloodness in Daiya. Both Gaiking and Daiku Maryu are both important in the series instead of just Gaiking being the only one who saved the day every time. Even the villains has personailites including the final boss which is one of the most twisted villains in anime. Plus it has one of the best "insert" song when Gaiking get his ultimate form.
haha, I saw the opening animation and decided I better not. With your recommendation though, I'll give it a second pass. Thanks for the suggestion Kragito! 🙂
Hi John, thanks for watching and commenting on my videos. Unfortunately I don't think any of the Force Five videos are available for sale. I really would love to have them, sigh its too bad. But you can watch an approximation online from ShoutFactory: Gaiking: www.shoutfactorytv.com/series/gaiking Danguard Ace: www.shoutfactorytv.com/series/danguard-ace StarZinger: www.shoutfactorytv.com/series/starzinger Thanks John, please consider subscribing I have a lot more videos on the way!
lol Well Go Nagai DID help to create GaiKing so is it really any surprise? I can't remember exactly but didn't Devilman do a cross-over with Gai-King or was it just Getter Robo? 🤔
Devilman did crossover with Go Nagai Super Robot. Devilman crossover with Mazinger Z in 1973 film Mazinger Z vs Devilman but they don’t fight it more a team up then vs. Then he crossover with getter Robo in the manga Devilman vs Getter Robo.
I remember in grade 3 in 1989 a classmate and I kept debating about Voltron or another robot show that starts with a V (which I never saw) and gaiking.
Thanks for watching @memyself4ever1 Its funny how many markets don't get the same programming. I suppose its part of the media buying back in the 80s. I really consider myself lucky that I got to watch as many awesome cartoons that I did back in the day! Please consider subscribing, I've got a lot of great retro reviews I think you'll like! 😀
Thank GOD for Bluray and DVDs. I need to find English subtitles. Mazinger Z was called Tranzor Z in English here in the States and it was translated in English. Unfortunately, the other shows were not. And of course we had both Voltrons!
Voltron's popularity was ridiculous. Being able to sell toys really helped animation, and I'm pretty sure its part of why cartoons aren't as memorable today (product placement lol). If you're interested in seeing a few of the force five series today, Shout Factory is streaming their re-release of Danguard Ace www.shoutfactorytv.com/series/danguard-ace , Spaceketeers www.shoutfactorytv.com/series/starzinger , and GaiKing www.shoutfactorytv.com/series/gaiking . The dubbing isn't any better than the original, but its quite the retro experience! Have a look and let me know what you think! 😃
I played the first game WAAAAAYYYY Back on the PS1. I never got to play them on the Super Famicom. It was like a dream to play with Getter Robo G and other Super Robots from my childhood! I don't play it now as I'm not much of a gamer with the new systems lol (getting old 😑)
Mega Jay Retro me too, I only play JRPGs and Indie fames that play like retro games. I got that magical Device call GPD XD it look like 3DS but android interface and emulators of all retro things , I love playing arcade games like beat em up so fun when you have endless COINS
You're quite right Dark Zentai, however at the start of the series, the Space Dragon didn't have any offensive capabilities. The Giant Cutter and Miracle drill were added much later in the series. But thanks for mentioning those new additions!
Mega Jay Retro True but it does sell him a little short as I’m a very big fan gaiking but also Mazinger z . And quite a few of mazingers weapons don’t get added till later but they are considered a standard whenever remember him all doing new shows based on him. I remember the giant cutter being used to kill a turtle monster gaiking flipped it and the giant cutter cut its head off so gaiking could hydro blazer it . Also I think the dino vehicles deserve mention.
You're right Dark Zentai, I really should do another video on Force Five, I did all of these reviews when I first started the channel so its been quite a while haha.
Your correct, Space Dragon had more weaker weapons since it was the carrier robot. Which included missile guns on chest, rear tail guns on the literal tail. Of course they added new head to allow it fight along side Gaiking. Then you had three smaller robot vehicles it launched as well.
the original idea of Gaiking It was from Go Nagai like a toei Deleted the name of Go Nagai from Credits and credited Akio Sugino for avoiding paying Royalties Only when that terrible Remake came Gaiking Legend of dayku Maryu of 2005 They had to pay Royalties Another turn
Wow that's incredible insight Mestre Hayato Jin (love your screen name!!!). That sucks Go Nagai should be compensated for his work the man is a master at his craft!
this mecha anime gem is when nagai and toei animation turned into hell. up until now, toei(the whole) were jerks as i hate to admit it despite of several good shows from them(anime or toku heroes).
Ah Toei, well as a business they have created so many beloved anime franchises. But I think commercialism to the American market is whats REALLY killing anime these days. Thanks for commenting on my video Jone!
Had an urge today to look up the cartoons I used to watch before heading off to preschool in the morning, and here I find all these people talking about the Force Five group. Thank you for the trip down memory lane.

The mechanical boy sub-plot: is that just straight-up Astro Boy spliced into Gai-King as an interstitial ?
How can I watch while episodes?

I forced myself to watch Legend of Daiku Maryu but once it passed like the 20 something episodes, that when the show really got good..
Where can I get the force five cartoons?
Hi John, thanks for watching and commenting on my videos. Unfortunately I don't think any of the Force Five videos are available for sale. I really would love to have them, sigh its too bad. But you can watch an approximation online from ShoutFactory:
Gaiking: www.shoutfactorytv.com/series/gaiking
Danguard Ace: www.shoutfactorytv.com/series/danguard-ace
StarZinger: www.shoutfactorytv.com/series/starzinger
Thanks John, please consider subscribing I have a lot more videos on the way!
I watched the shout factory gaiking films and the voices for the characters are terrible I wished they kept the original voices
Do you own SOC GX-27 Gaiking?
Jason Bates in his Devil-Beast form has Gaiking’s horm.
lol Well Go Nagai DID help to create GaiKing so is it really any surprise? I can't remember exactly but didn't Devilman do a cross-over with Gai-King or was it just Getter Robo? 🤔
Jason Bates is from 1998 Anime Devilman Lady or The DevilLady in the u.s.
LOL I love those cross overs!
Intro to this series I still remember and it’s the best of Force Five. Gaiking even better then Voltron lol
I remember in grade 3 in 1989 a classmate and I kept debating about Voltron or another robot show that starts with a V (which I never saw) and gaiking.
I don't think Force Five ever aired in New York City where I'm from. I've only heard of Raideen through the UHF Spanish channel.
Thanks
Enjoy! 😁
Later gets remade
Nastalgia!
Yes PAO GATE 13, its one of the best!
Do you play the SRW games ?
I played the first game WAAAAAYYYY Back on the PS1. I never got to play them on the Super Famicom. It was like a dream to play with Getter Robo G and other Super Robots from my childhood! I don't play it now as I'm not much of a gamer with the new systems lol (getting old 😑)
Mega Jay Retro me too, I only play JRPGs and Indie fames that play like retro games.
I got that magical Device call GPD XD it look like 3DS but android interface and emulators of all retro things , I love playing arcade games like beat em up so fun when you have endless COINS
I don’t mean to contradict you but the space dragon can defend itself as it has the giant cutter and the miracle drill.

Hey how are you doing 😉
I'm doing good @Bert Dee! How about you? 🙂
I`m doing great just wanted to see what new toons you have
the original idea of Gaiking It was from Go Nagai like a toei Deleted the name of Go Nagai from Credits and credited Akio Sugino for avoiding paying Royalties Only when that terrible Remake came Gaiking Legend of dayku Maryu of 2005 They had to pay Royalties Another turn
There’s a cancelled movie trailer on here
