Fun fact Button still carries the grid penalty he recieved for flipping Wehrlien in Monaco. If he is to make a return to F1 this year he will be serving the 3 place grid penalty he recieved 4 years ago.
I think it's fucking hilarious that Alonso missed a race because the Honda engine was so shit Zack allowed him to race in Indy, only for his Honda engine to break in that too.
Ironic yes, I did not find it hilarious. Alonso was never my favourite driver but to not be able to show your skills because the hardware sucks… I found it sad.
Every time when we talk about something related to F1 kimi's name always comes up. I don't know how it happens, maybe because of his long career or his nature. But surely I'm going to miss him if he doesn't get the chance to race next year.
Who can forget the iconic Andrea Moda at the 1992 French Grand Prix? Stuck amongst a lorry drivers strike and couldn’t make the circuit and only team to do so
@Connor, the android sent by CyberLife listen to the podcast "F1 on the edge" there is an episode about his kidnapping. Basically Fangio was kidnapped by the cuban revolutionaries to attract attention to the situation of Cuba. Fangio being argentinian understood this (there was a lot of USA funded coup d'etat in latin america at the time) and cooperated with them and became friends with the kidnappers.
The permission withdrawn thing seems kinda rough for the drivers. They asked if they could do a thing, the regulators said yes, they did the thing, then the regulators changed their mind. That's just unfair to the drivers.
Schumi was being backed by Mercedes so it was simply a matter of time. He only did the one race for Jordan and was in a Benetton on the next race at Monza. I was at that race and was a bit confused by the helmets in the Jordan (Roberto Moreno) and Benetton.
Tyre failure during the Indianapolis race in 2005, when Michelin tyred cars didn’t compete due to the tyre manufacturer’s fears of tyre failure. It was a collective DNS but worth mentioning.
Notable mention: Stefan Bellof in 1985. Tyrell was too poor to afford two models of the Tyrell 014 with turbo engines so Brundle and Bellof practically shared that car. In Hockenheim 1985 Bellof piloted that while in the two previous races that car was piloted by Brundle.
Kolles... His wiki page has this gem. "In July 2013, it emerged that Kolles had previously tried to blackmail Mercedes-Benz Motorsport boss Toto Wolff after he had allegedly recorded Wolff making negative remarks about the Mercedes F1 Team's management." The Andretti/Unser one is good. Such a shame they didn't get to race as that was a great achievement. Gachot is still the best reason. And Mansell's the funniest.
Another notable mention: Otto Stuppacher 1976 in Monza. He started in a privately financed Tyrell 007 (the car piloted by Sheckter and Depailler in the 1975 season) and missed qualifying for the race (8 secs behind the penultimate driver Arturo Merzario in the weak Wolf-Williams). But rules at that time had it that the permission to start in a GP was not dependent on the time set but on the position in qualifying meaning out of 29 entrants 26 were allowed to start despite their time in qualifying. Hunt, Mass and Watson however had their lap time in qualifying disallowed because of fuel irregularities so Stuppacher could have raced in the GP but it turned out that he had flown back to Vienna on the evening after the qualifying and could not make it to Monza in time to start at the GP.
One race Mansell missed in 88 was the race at Monza; his substitute was involved in the Ayrton Senna incident that enabled the hometown Ferraris to finish 1-2 in the first race after the death of Enzo
@@egrekhnev6115 Oh, thank you for solving that one, some bits of popular culture passed me by. Off to watch it now, I like the idea even in a music video! 😂
Doing this kind of "double duty" is absolutely normal in the US, so they probably didn't even think about a rule against it. Both then made their debut in the US GP, with being the only race for Bobby Unser and the first pole in the first race for Andretti. The later wasn't such a surprise for the US audience, as he was literally a god of pole positions back then.
with Mansell the car was designed for Hakkinen. Marlboro wanted a champion only 2 were Mansell and Prost. No eddie irvine having appendicitis on wiki it says he PO. practiced only. Modena also missed the weighbridge and was disquallified.
Fun fact 6:47 that's actually Mario's twin brother Aldo in the photo. In practice for the 1969 Indianapolis 500 Mario suffered facial burns so for the front row photos they had Aldo stand in. If you look at the individual qualifying photos from that year you'll notice Mario kept his helmet and balaclava on
At the German GP in Hockenheim in 1989, in the days when there were so many teams that they actually had prequalifying before qualifying "proper", the two Rial-Ford cars didn't qualify for the race. Volker Weidler's car was disqualified because it had to be push-started, and Christian Danner's car was too slow to qualify. It turned out later that the team didn't have any parts for the cars which meant that Danner had to drive half of the straights with the rev limiter on because they didn't have the right gear ratios for Hockenheim. Somewhere I have an old casette recording of Danner's car changing up the gears and then going BRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGG for the last few seconds of the straight every lap.
How about - Andrea De Cesaris, Japan 1994? Went on a windsurfing holiday thinking Wendlinger was coming back from injury. Given weather at said race, water sport tactics might have been a viable option.
Still a really weird one - and it ended up as one of the factors costing McLaren the constructors title that year. Joan Pablo's relationship with Ron really soured after that too although, because it's Ron Dennis, you have to expect that.

Montoya's injury is not up for question anymore, He admitted to it being a bike accident in ''Beyond the Grid''. I would have thought the Race would check out at least THAT podcast, given the fact it's funded and promoted by Formula 1 (Liberty Media) itself
Yes, back then it was part of the Championship despite running a different formula. When I went to the USA F1 GP in 2000 (?) I pointed out to many that it wasn't really the Innaugrial event
How about, a race ban extended? Eddie Irvine was blamed for the multi car pile up in Brazil 1994 involving himself, Eric Bernard, Jos Verstappen and Martin Brundle. Eddie Jordan appealed the ruling which sentenced him to a one race ban initially. The appeal failed and Irvine's ban was increased to a 3 Grands Prix ban, meaning that he actually missed the Pacific, San Marino and Monaco Grands Prix, before returning in Spain
I feel that last years events also deserve a spot on the list. We may not think it's stranfe now, but in a few years we will look back and think that not partecipating in a gp because of a global pandemic it's rather unusual.
While I see what you are saying, thing is that was ALL drivers that were in that same boat at the same time (Same can be said for ALOT of series as well). This list covers just THOSE particular drivers missing out.
For Senna, wasn't he replaced by Pierluigi Martini instead ? (and failed to qualify by the way) Johansson was his teammate for the end of the season to fill the absence of the injured Johnny Cecotto.
I'd add Patrese to this list. He missed the US Grand Prix because he was banned after a protest from other drivers for causing massive crash at previous race in Monza that claimed the life of Swedish F1 protégé Ronny Peterson.
Bruno Senna sent an email to his sister complaining about Colin Kolles which he sent to Kolles by mistake which got him benched for a race and dropped at the end of the season
Don't forget that Riccardo Patrese was suspended for the 1978 United States Grand Prix following the death of Ronnie Paterson in the Italian Grand Prix.
