Dear Adam thank you for the nice video. One question please: Why should hyperventilation cause samba if the dive is not longer or deeper than usual? I don't disagree to your explanation, I am spearfishing 27 years now and, indeed, I have suffered sambas in similar situations e.g in "small" dives where I unconsciously hyperventilated e.g when having hit a good fish and trying to relax on the surface for a second dive. But why does this happen since, as far as I know, samba is caused by the lack of oxygen and hyperventilation doesn't do this, it just lessen CO2 levels. May be it is the Bohr phenomenon?
Hey :) hyperventilation decreases the bodies ability to utilise the oxygen in your blood. Hyperventilation both increases the period of time a person can hold their breath without getting the urge to breathe and decreases the period of time a person can hold their breath without blacking out :) It's mostly to do with the Bohr effect :)

I wish Australians could find their way to calling them just mulloway, rather than jewfish. We have learned to use goliath grouper rather than jewfish up in this part of the world (N America, Caribbean).
@@Scattzz I understand and appreciate your comment, but etymology doesn't really affect impact. Can you imagine some fish having a name that included the "n" word but whose derivation was not from the racial slur? I think people would still hear it as a racial slur. Why not just call them mulloway?
matt w yeah that’s an interesting point. I’ve actually never heard of the name for them as mulloway. But I have always felt weird calling them that😂. Thanks for you comment.
In this case all I did was photograph it haha. But everyone freedives for their own reasons. There is no 1 way to freedive and there are many freediving philosophies. No one person is correct in the way that they dive or view the ocean.
All spearfishers (spearos) are freedivers, but not all freedivers are spearos. Some people do freediving as a competitive sport, some people use freediving as a way to enjoy nature, and some people use freediving as a tool to hunt - either to feed their family or to make a living. And those different objectives aren't necessarily mutually exclusive either. The same diver might have different objectives on different dives, or multiple objectives on the same dive.
@@AdamFreediver No one person is correct, but some people are more or less correct. For example, any one who supports unsustainable fishing practices is incorrect. Anyone who goes out of their way to disturb nature is incorrect. But yes, amongst the three main freediving philosophies - enjoyment, competition, or hunting - we can say that everyone is equally "correct".
Every time I see your spear-fishing videos I feel so conflicted. On one hand, I'm not comfortable with hunting of any kind. On the other hand, you appear to eat everything you catch. And I guess taking fish from the ocean like this is far more sustainable than industrial-scale operations. So rational me says I shouldn't whine. Emotional me has some trouble with 'what a beautiful fish, let's kill it!' Still loving the content, though! Even if my personal preference leans more toward the videos with more observing and less shooting :)
