    I found a big dose of comforting humor and seasoned knowledge from these two in this Highlights episode ... we're all at different stages of our gardening paths, but the connections we all have going down that path bind us together with our common struggles when it comes to getting it done, and family that can sometimes thwart or enhance our goals. We deal with family life, through success and struggle. Laura and Aaron are young yet, and we get the privilege of them letting us into their lives, to watch them realize their dreams, allow us to be acquainted with their extended families, managing expectations, compromising when necessary, then cutting losses and moving on. What of that don't all of us do, in gardening and in our personal lives? That's why I always look forward to their videos and posts. Thank you to them, it's really only their posts I look forward to more than anything on social media, because they are real.

    I enjoyed Aaron's comments about the PW White Pots. He really explained both sides of the issue. I like that all of the PW plants are in the White Pots. @@mirandasimmons9435 I'm not liking the PW EcoPots at all. I tested with the tabs in soil by themselves after breaking them up and they aren't breaking down at all and it's coming up to about a year. I know PW's is doing their best to make them more eco friendly but these aren't the best option. Maybe bring back the original until they have a solid solution because I'm really missing those too. I like them for seed starts outside since I don't use grow lights etc indoors.

      @kareharpies 2 роки тому

      @@maryjojouwstra3860 the issue is the price. Bonnie plants swallows the cost of their own branding. PW wants growers to pay for their marketing/branding by forcing them to buy SIGNIFICANTLY expensive pots in the largest size only. These growers are the ones whose hands grow the plants you seem to think grow magically well because theyre in a white pot. Another commenter mentioned that her garden center buys their white pots at the same factory that produces the PW ones but the PW ones are triple the price. No business wants to swallow another business's in house costs.

    I think PW is within their rights to require the white pots, and customers obviously benefit by clear branding (i.e. not worrying about knock offs; ease of identification when shopping etc.). Perhaps it wouldn't be such a contentious issue if they were to drop the price or subsidize the branding/packaging for the growers. And perhaps make the pots in a few more of the standardized sizes so that growers could switch over their operations without missing a beat. Even if PW has to bear some of the cost, I think they'd gain far more in good will and added revenue than they'd lose.
    Edit: It also occurred to me that perhaps this requirement is the first phase of a plan to roll out the biodegradable plastic for all their plant containers. If that's the case, that would be a big deal and less to complain about.

    • @maynardgreenhouse
      @maynardgreenhouse 2 роки тому

      Yes I was thinking maybe that’s why they want to dump these on us. We’re not allowed to reuse old pots either which honestly how would they know. We can opt out of buying the pots if we use the plants for baskets or they are for landscape use. Calculating how much we would need was a totally pain.

    A nursery grower near me told me about the PW pots.

    If they grow many, that adds a big cost!

    • @barbaragunder8169
      @barbaragunder8169 2 роки тому +3

      That cost is then passed on to the consumer. Our local growers increased their prices from $2.49 to $5.00 per annual due to the cost of the cans, the trays and the Proven Winners shipping cost. So glad that Aaron addressed the PW requirement issue. I’m a little late with this, but has anyone seen their local growers abandon Proven Winners. Mine did.😩 I was soooo disappointed I couldn’t find them a my local greenhouse. I walked in, asking for bubblegum, and one of owners went ballistic. Not at me, but just showing her aggravation at the requirement. There was not one white pot in the premise……I too hope this will pass. They have great plants!

    I had to laugh when you were talking about not sleeping for 4 years. I remember complaining to my mom or telling her about my daughter complaining after she had her baby and my mom said heck I haven't slept a full night in 40 year or so. She said once you are a mom you will never sleep all night again. Made me laugh so hard. It sucks though because when I had my first 2 kids I was a teen mom and I got no chance to talk like moms do. If I said something I would get 'well you wanted to have a baby' thrown in my face with such disgust by most family members. I didn't realize how much damage that caused till I was older. I try my hardest to never do that to anyone young or not. I don't know how you managed anything with Benjamin. You had been married for around ten years i think and never had babies around you before. You did awesome and still amaze me. Thank you for sharing your journey with us. I respect and look up to you so very much. I have even found your church and have listened to a few of Aaron's mom's bible study videos. Wonderful family-such a blessing.

    I agree with all other comments. BECAUSE: I am friends with our Nursery owner, and unbeknownst to me, I complained to him, in 2020-2021, that I am unhappy with the lack of *Proven Winner* plants he has. Meaning, I didn't see the *Proven Winner* pots, of all the plants he has. He guaranteed to me, they are *Proven Winner* plants, but they are shipped to him (like seedings?) and he has to repot them in *PW* pots. I had no idea what he was talking about, (and didn't questioned him) but now I understand it, because of you! Since I order in bulk for our huge property, he didn't transplant in the *PW* pots. Thank you for sharing this information with us! Now I understand! Brigitte in Tulsa Oklahoma

    I wouldn’t mind paying a little extra for Proven Winners perennials in the white pots, but think there should be another solution for annuals. We buy them every year for the same spaces in our gardens. I just don’t see the need to pay extra for white pots every single year. Seems to me that a Proven Winners sticker with the plant info on the cheaper pots would be enough to identify the brand.

    Thank you for illuminating the grower/Proven Winner dilemma. I wondered why the Proven Winners annuals weren't available in local Home Depots but were available through their website. They came to us in the Seattle / Portland area from Detroit and Miami. One order shipped out of Detroit at 9:30 pm on April 5 and delivered at 8:15 on April 7 by FedEx. The other shipped out of Miami on April 4 at 9:30 pm and were delivered on April 6 at 4:26 by UPS. They were very healthy, sturdy plants, packed amazingly well and flown in and delivered with care by FedEx and UPS. Happy to plug Proven Winners, Home Depot, FedEx and UPS when they can rise above the supply chain woes so well.

    My family owns a garden centre/greenhouse in Canada, so the proven winner pot change for annuals doesn’t apply to us (yet), but we’re hearing a ton of comments from growers in the US as well. The price and the pot size were definitely common issues, but there were a couple other things brought up. Some growers are experiencing delays with the pots or the trays being shipped so the plant material is sitting in their small sized pot or plug too long and decreasing the quality. They can’t transplant into something else in the meantime because the pots they already have are already planned for something else. In regards to pot size, the tray and the pot together take up more space in the greenhouse than if the growers chose to grow in a standard 4” or 3.5” so if they are tight on space in the greenhouse (as many of us are), they are forced to reduce the amount of plants they are producing across the board to accommodate. I understand proven winners wanting to brand their containers, but perhaps they could offer multiple size options so the growers have some flexibility. Just my two cents!

    I've noticed a change in the Miricle Grow potting soil composition over the last several years. You're right- there seems to be a higher concentration of chunky products: little bits of wood, twigs, sometimes small rocks- kind of like they skipped a sifting step. Its frustrating and makes for slow progress when using a soil blocker or for potting up small plants.

    Personally, I don’t have an issue with PW making growers use their cans, though I do find it sad only because my local garden center does grow them on in their own branded cans, they have the signs and tags indicating they’re PW plants but the cans are theirs. I LOVE their cans, they are not only sturdier then PW cans so I can save them for other uses but they are beginner friendly, my local garden center has two colors for their cans, yellow and purple, all sun loving annuals and perennials are grown in the yellow cans, all shade loving are grown in the purple.
    It makes it super nice for beginners and even experienced gardeners because they can clearly see where what is just at a glance.
    So, although I’m not mad about the change, I am bummed.

I bought my cleaner several years ago, and I have yet to open the second one, as it goes a long way. It's good for molded plastic, such as your window boxes are made of, stainless steel, porcelain, flat cooktops, countertops, plastic outdoor lawn chairs, and many other applications in and outside of the home. It is my go-to product and has saved us so many times when other cleaners will just not do the job! Sorry if this sounds like a commercial, but I just can't say enough!!

    Over the years Proven Winners plants were available at local garden centers in black cans. There is an expense for smaller garden centers which will be passed on to the customer. You know yall, thank you for being appreciative of your employee taking the initiative to do things and not getting mad and harping on them for taking the initiative without your permission. I have been in work environments where it was “you don’t do anything without asking me” but then received complaints about asking them because “they have so much on their plate”. That may be why some people are timid about asking and not just do things that are common sense. I know for me, it took away my confidence in just “handling” things.
