Another little detail I love is the sound design of the show. They add in the little squish sound when Squidward walks, Krabs feet sound and the whoosh sound when characters quickly turns their head is just a few examples of using sound form the cartoon and putting it in the musical.
I think it also prevented the dumpster fire that happened to Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. People think spongebob on Broadway is a bad idea But it’s absolutely amazing, it was a birthday present From my parents about a year ago And it was “The best day Ever”
i think they did really well with the characters, but i don’t think they did justice to karen. in the show karen doesn’t really care about plankton’s evil plans. but in the production she’s seems wayyy more enthusiastic. but it’s still an amazing show
Thats fair, but they make a whole point that Karen is incredibly fired up and into the scheming this time around after years of a lackluster marriage. I'm also willing to bet impending doom is providing an "adrenaline" rush.
I saw Frozen in Pantages with my best friend. I mean, it was quite beautiful, and the Hygge song was funny, But I don’t listen to the entire album everyday, do I? However, I have only seen the TV version of Spongebob the Musical, And I listen to the album everyday. If _this_ is an unpopular opinion, idk what isn’t!
Growing up, I never thought I would like musicals. Seeing the Spongebob musical on TV changed my mind. Everything was so well choreographed, the songs sound amazing, and it's easy to tell that the actors enjoy what they're doing. One thing I always look for in a live performance is how much the performers enjoy it, since, if the performers don't enjoy it, the magic of it is gone.
Absolutely this. I always illustrate this by talking about my experience with two high school shows I was a part of: The first, Guys and Dolls, is an absolute trainwreck of sexism that promotes outdated gender roles and aside from a few absolute bangers is a total snoozefest. But it was fun for the audience because we clearly had a blast being in it! Contrast that with Mamma Mia! which is arguably better with more consistently good songs, a tighter story, and less sexism (though it's pretty slut-shamey, ngl). Aside from our choreographers, every adult involved in creating our production was an absolute asshole and no one had fun. A lot of people described it as soulless and uncomfortable.
It’s so wholesome, colorful, the set design is so creative, the characters are so accurate yet so unique and the cast are soooo talented !!!! I love this musical
Cats has a stage filmed musical film. It's from 1980 something and it's far better than the current film. Seeing in on stage live is genuinely fantastic.
Nothing will ever be better than the stage rendition of CATS. I honestly do not like the people who had the idea to make a CATS movie, because it’s kind of skewing people’s perspectives on the musical.
The only thing this video doesn't touch on that I absolutely adored when I saw the show in Chicago was how they have a sound effect artist in the pit doing live folie work for every sound in the show-- every footstep, every noise, everything. It was phenomenal.
When Lin Manuel Miranda was writing Hamilton he was laughed at. See him how. No one took him seriously. Just like this musical. Edit: Brendon Urie made a song!? Okay then. That's new information. Nice.
FINALLY!! Someone who agrees! When I watched it, I was balling my eyes out, my ENTIRE childhood was spongebob, and now seeing it on something else I love, like omg it was perfect.
People complaining about this musical and can't appreciate the hard work of these actors and actresses, it's like Shrek The Musical all over again, at least they're entertaining y'all.
5:31 spongebob actor got the hand gesture direction wrong but it was so cute seeing his reaction and the middle guy’s reaction... also, that clip solidified it for me that this musical has really talented casts!
When I first heard that there was going to be a SpongeBob musical I thought to myself "hmm.. that would be a weird concept that I'll give it a try" then watched the trailer. GODDAMN the trailer is soo good the choreography, costume, the songs and the actors are soo good, the trailer really pushed me into watching this masterpiece.
Okay, honestly, it's amazing. Like taking away everything that's silly about it, you've got to admit how progressive it also is. For example, with the main female characters - Sandy, Pearl, and Karen - they're all played by diverse women. Sandy and Pearl are both played by black women, and Karen's actress is Asian American. The news reporter - "Perch Perkins" - also wears heavy makeup throughout the show with glittering highlighter and a fabulous purple-esque hairdo. Despite this, he starts and absolutely rocks the most badass song in the show, No Control, with possibly the lowest voice in the show, absolutely crushing gender norms and the toxic "boys can't be pretty and wear makeup while still being awesome" mentality. Also some of the ideas put forth are brave to be put in a children's show, like the idea of Pearl feeling like she's fighting for her father over his greed, people finding someone to blame out of fear and blaming Sandy because she's "different" than them and "not from here", and the whole ongoing joke about the government not knowing what to do and blaming the media. Despite this, this show manages to make an amazing impact while still managing to make the whole audience smile and laugh, which is surprisingly hard to do. Kudos to the writers, cast, and crew for this. (also I didn't know this but apparently you can buy the Nickelodeon recording off of Amazon in HD instead of streaming it and help them out even more)
It's genius! The best part is how many people contributed to the songs, by writing one song each! Every style of the song is different, personalized by the songwriter, which gives it an extra twang when it comes to expression!
okay but you never even mentioned the sound guy??? there’s SO MUCH that goes into sound design for this show to the point that the sound effects guy has to be on stage to see what’s going on. every step spongebob or squidward makes, he never misses the sound!! it’s insane!!!!!! the amount of practice and rehearsal to get all that down
I was legit convinced this was going to be a joke when I saw it at the Tony's this year, and my gosh do I stand corrected, this is actually really good so thank you for reminding me about this.
Wow, I wasn’t expecting a Spongebob musical to be this good, but holy crap this is amazing! It’s obvious that the cast and crew had a huge amount of respect for the show and Stephen Hillenburg, and it is such a shame it closed.
Oh my god, seeing all of the artists that contributed into the writing of the soundtrack was so cool! You can practically hear each of their styles in all of the songs. I love the musically diversity in this musical, and it was a great musical overall. Don't knock it 'til you watch it! (It has been on UA-cam ever since the show closed).
Finally! Someone who doesn’t hate on the Musical. I originally thought I would hate it, but I didn’t see it on broadway, I saw it somewhere else, but it was really good! I also watched some slime tutorials! I just hate how random people who have never seen movies / tv shows / musicals etc, and hating on it! Their so annoying! Tysm for posting!
i absolutely LOVE the musical. its very in character and fun, my only complaint was the storyline was kinda basic, but other than that ?? amazing ! every singer is talented and its all very true to the tv show
Thank you for this amazing video. My friend who likes broadway said, "Spongbob is a disgrace to broadway, especially Mr. Krab's song." Thank God shes kinda the minority.
i was starting to question how david bowie would've contributed since the musical came out a few months after Bowie passed away (rip legend) till i realised how long it takes to create a broadway musical
I watched the tv version of the show. I was honestly impressed. This is a great show! They perform the iconic characters in such a perfect way. I especially loved Squidward, Plankton and Karen in particular from this show. The music is absolutely fantastic! I didn't know so many people worked on the music from the show!
I was lucky enough to get to this musical back when it was in Chicago, and lord did I love it. I thought it was going to be some silly show, and not wanting to hurt my grandmother's feelings I went. And I am so glad I did, both I and her loved it so much.
im so tempted to travel to the US just to get an opportunity to watch this musical! tho everytime i tell my friends and family about this they think its a bad musical...
I saw it on Broadway, and it was amazing. Clearly run and performed by people that loved what they were doing. It had a compelling, layered story with meaningful sociopolitical messages. It pushes self confidence, loving yourself for who you are, and accepting others. I honestly don't understand how it didn't get a bigger reception.
I’m glad that a lot of main stream Broadway actors didn’t take the jobs of this musical it gave a lot of newcomers a strong foot to shine on and gave these characters more life and character
Did this musical at my show and dude it was a FEAT man. That music has so many moving parts, a ton of set pieces and props, so many costumes you have to change in and out of like that, but it was so fun and I have yet to meet a person that didn't like the production me and the students put on (background extra so I trust people aren't lying to me) It really doesn't deserve the hate it gets, it's a really enjoyable musical
Ok real quick idk why but every time I see the guy who plays spongebob I just hear squidward in the back of my head like "OH NO HES HOT" 😂😂😂 Also unrelated but boy they really changed his outfit a lot and I'm glad they stopped making his hair yellow cause uh yikes
I remember seeing the instagram pagd without knowing anything about it and thought "Wtf? Why would this be a musical?". And then I came across a bootleg and it was so much better than I could've expected. It was just so incredible.
Spongebob is one of my favorite musicals ever and the emotions I feel when nobody takes it seriously or when people make fun of it (especially when they've never even seen it) are intense.
AMAZING!!! Thank you so much for making this. A lot of people still feel indifferent about watching it, I even recently watched Inside Edition's vid about the musical and people in the comments think it's cringey which at first I thought so too but after listening Ethan's (not a) simple sponge it single handedly made me fall in love with the musical and has made me even binge watch some of the Spongebob episodes just because I love this musical so much . I cannot emphasize enough on how carefully and wonderfully crafted this musical is from the songs down to the set design, you can clearly see the passion love and effort into making this and the performances are top notch . I wish other people could share this sentiment with me as well. :-))

The stage is beautiful and I love how they use ordinary things like when SpongeBob and Sandy are climbing the mountain they are climbing on boxes but it's still really cool
The costumes are brilliant with squidward's being my favorite and SpongeBob's second
Overall it wants you to have fun so have fun
Is nobody gonna talk about how amazing that Screaming Krabby Patty's vocal cords are!?
That's Jon Rua! He was also in Hamilton :)

People think spongebob on Broadway is a bad idea
But it’s absolutely amazing, it was a birthday present From my parents about a year ago
And it was “The best day Ever”

*SQUIDS LEGS MY LORD ITS GLORIOUS !!!*
i think they did really well with the characters, but i don’t think they did justice to karen. in the show karen doesn’t really care about plankton’s evil plans. but in the production she’s seems wayyy more enthusiastic. but it’s still an amazing show
razor skooter yeah... my same thought. Karen usually mocked plankton a lot as well... she seemed too enthusiastic about his evil plans.
Thats fair, but they make a whole point that Karen is incredibly fired up and into the scheming this time around after years of a lackluster marriage. I'm also willing to bet impending doom is providing an "adrenaline" rush.
razor skooter Aye, don’t bring disrespect to *christennnnnnnnnnnnnn*
Tbh I prefer this Karen.
I mean, she seemed to be going through the motions in the beginning until it seemed like his plan would start to work. Then she got on board
Unpopular opinion : I think this is better than frozen on broadway (don’t kill me pls)
i haven't even seen frozen on broadway but i agree to your statement.
Facts
I saw Frozen in Pantages with my best friend.
I mean, it was quite beautiful, and the Hygge song was funny,
But I don’t listen to the entire album everyday, do I?
However, I have only seen the TV version of Spongebob the Musical,
And I listen to the album everyday.
If _this_ is an unpopular opinion, idk what isn’t!
No, no, they've got a point.
You’re right and you should say it
Squidward’s act 2 costume is absolutely beautiful. Such incredible attention to detail with the beading!
Ethan Slater reminds me of Tom Holland so much
He reminded me of John Mulaney but I can see where your coming from
I somehow found Tom Holland on sims 4. Don't question how
Right? The entire time, I was just like, Spider-Man? Is that you? Also Patrick would be Ned. Bc best friends
is it because he plays such a gentle character but is absolutely ripped? lol 😭
I always illustrate this by talking about my experience with two high school shows I was a part of:
The first, Guys and Dolls, is an absolute trainwreck of sexism that promotes outdated gender roles and aside from a few absolute bangers is a total snoozefest.

THE SET WAS SO GOOD LIKE IT WAS SO CARTOONY AND GAVE ME SO MUCH NOSTALGIA
It’s so wholesome, colorful, the set design is so creative, the characters are so accurate yet so unique and the cast are soooo talented !!!! I love this musical
I’ll be the first one to ask it:
Why is spongebob ripped? I do not enjoy being attracted to spongebob, but I won’t deny it
I thought I was the only one 😅
i don't enjoy it either but at least we get to see the actor for Plankton in what could be described as streetwear bondage gear.
This is unironically one of my favorite musicals. Like theres so much heart in it, the songs are so fun, and the casting is just perfect

It’s still better than CATS. No CGI at all. Also on a stage.
So is cats
@@missycat7598 CATS is a shitty musical
CATS is originally a musical with “no CGI at all”.
“Deserves to be taken as seriously as Hamilton” did you HEAR planktons rap, that was better than Hamilton’s raps any day.
I need to agree with this XD
i just listened to plankton’s rap and its the other way around-

Hmmmm gotta disagree
When Pearl started singing
I just gave up my singing career
5:31 spongebob actor got the hand gesture direction wrong but it was so cute seeing his reaction and the middle guy’s reaction... also, that clip solidified it for me that this musical has really talented casts!
The thing that sold me is that old man Jenkins is a character 😂
The spongebob musical is fucking incredible, and now that it's available on Prime, hopefully more people can be exposed to this wonderful musical.
When I first heard that there was going to be a SpongeBob musical I thought to myself "hmm.. that would be a weird concept that I'll give it a try" then watched the trailer. GODDAMN the trailer is soo good the choreography, costume, the songs and the actors are soo good, the trailer really pushed me into watching this masterpiece.
it's so weird. Spongebob's voice isn't annoying. I'm not used to it
Did anyone say “my leg” during the performance tho
Jenn G Yes they used an audio clip of the “my leg” guy at one point in the show lol
Mosie Eiliyah that’s the dealbreaker for me
@@jenng9899 Why?

"I think the world needs a Spongebob musical"
especially at a time like this
okay but you never even mentioned the sound guy??? there’s SO MUCH that goes into sound design for this show to the point that the sound effects guy has to be on stage to see what’s going on. every step spongebob or squidward makes, he never misses the sound!! it’s insane!!!!!! the amount of practice and rehearsal to get all that down
still forever thankful they let ethan have his red hair for broadway rather than that yellow sticky hair they had him wear for pre-broadway
I know right! Besides I absolutely live for boys with red hair lmao
I love how they didn't use those gross costumes and they did real life style
I'm glad Nick did the Musical live on their channel. It was sooo good and felt very true to Spongebob.
i read the title as "spongebob broadway deserves to be taken down, seriously"
Tysm for posting!
when karen was speaking the monitor was following her so perfectly, that detail!
Pearl’s actress is only 19? I’m devastated lmaoooo sis is the same age as me and LOOK where she’s at 😭 glad to see a fellow sister killing it tho
Crying because it’s my childhood on broadway
i absolutely LOVE the musical. its very in character and fun, my only complaint was the storyline was kinda basic, but other than that ?? amazing ! every singer is talented and its all very true to the tv show
Thank you for this amazing video. My friend who likes broadway said, "Spongbob is a disgrace to broadway, especially Mr. Krab's song." Thank God shes kinda the minority.
This musical literally made me cry, I don't get to say that often. This musical should be taken seriously.
Jesus Christ! She's 19 with that kind of voice,Damn she's been blessed!
i love how everyone wants to hate it but can't bc its so good
I used to think that this musical is cursed, but now it's one of my all time favorites.
Gonna be honest, Chop to the Top *sounds* like a Lady Antebellum song and I stan
I love this show, and I don’t even like Spongebob that much
i was starting to question how david bowie would've contributed since the musical came out a few months after Bowie passed away (rip legend)
till i realised how long it takes to create a broadway musical
Another thing is that this probably introduced musicals to many young kids. Its so visually entertaining and has great songs.
"The Flaming Lips wrote a song for a Spongebob Broadway production" is a sentence I never hesitate to share with the unexpecting
I watched the tv version of the show. I was honestly impressed. This is a great show! They perform the iconic characters in such a perfect way. I especially loved Squidward, Plankton and Karen in particular from this show. The music is absolutely fantastic! I didn't know so many people worked on the music from the show!
the thing I love about this musical is that it’s got kid friendly aspects, but has adult jokes too. It’s like the OG cartoon I love it so much
I was lucky enough to get to this musical back when it was in Chicago, and lord did I love it.
They showed it on tv once maybe you can find the tv version of the musical.

kasumikat The Broadway production closed in 2018
I saw it on Broadway, and it was amazing.
I just got full body CHILLS when 'Pearl' began to sing damn girl!
Did this musical at my show and dude it was a FEAT man.
That music has so many moving parts, a ton of set pieces and props, so many costumes you have to change in and out of like that, but it was so fun and I have yet to meet a person that didn't like the production me and the students put on (background extra so I trust people aren't lying to me)
It really doesn't deserve the hate it gets, it's a really enjoyable musical
Ok real quick idk why but every time I see the guy who plays spongebob I just hear squidward in the back of my head like "OH NO HES HOT" 😂😂😂
Also unrelated but boy they really changed his outfit a lot and I'm glad they stopped making his hair yellow cause uh yikes
