- GREAT NEWS! A brand new series of HORRIBLE HISTORIES starts on CBBC on 31st May 2010!! In the meantime... Here's just a tiny nugget from series 1: the tale of Henry VIII's six wives... in song!
Fun fact, this was the first song EVER written for horrible histories. It all started here!

fun fact: anne of cleves was actually really pretty. but henry viii dressed up as a peasant while she was waiting for the king and tried to flirt and kiss her. she was horrified, because he was quite ugly, and continued waiting. henry was so embarrassed that he divorced her.

Which isn't unusual considering she was from Germany. Plus, she had a fairly tall figure with a large bosom and not the petite small breasted figure his other wives had prior

Henry VII (7th) was a very wise and just ruler. He had his faults, but he managed to uphold a stable monarchy and country in the face of a pretenders, foreign threat and poverty.
And then this guy came along.
What were the faults?
He taxed his people too much towards the end and he handled the Perkin Warbeck affair pretty badly.

In all seriousness, she had the luckiest fate of not ending up getting decapitated for producing a female heir and not dying for giving birth to a male one. Henry gave her a lot of fortune and lived a peaceful life, and even outliving Henry and all of his other wives, even Catherine Parr.
We true but he just killed two and the others died (and cleves lived till Parr i guess :p)

Fun fact! Anne of cleves was actually just like her portrait, but he dressed as a peasant to surprise her, yet she didn’t understand many English tales being German so she refused to kiss him. This embarrassed him, but then they had a more sibling type love than romantic after the divorce

I used to watch horrible histories all the time with my mom and my brother, it was actually kind of a tradition that we would watch it while eating dinner and it was one of my favorite things, this brought back so many memories☺️
The original Horrible Histories cast are now writing and acting in the comedy 'Ghosts' available on BBC iPlayer if you want some new content from them!

This is my favorite song from Horrible Histories
Jane Seymour didn't live long enough for Henry to get further bored with her & to eventually dump her. Some historian said it was rumored that Henry was already becoming disillusioned with Jane until he discovered she was pregnant. After she gave him a son, suddenly she was perfect, could do no wrong, & Henry claimed an undying love for her. Henry Never "loved" Anybody in his life, including his dumb self. He loved the fact that he could use & abuse whomever he wanted whenever he wanted!
I'm probably far too old to find this funny but I do! I wish they'd taught history like this when I was at school!

we watched this in my year seven history class and we were all in stitches including my teacher
I remember a fanfic I read recently. The author said her headcanon is After Anne (or possibly Jane), he was always trying to emulate his first marriage with Catharine of Aragon, because most of his wives (with the exception of Anne Boleyn) all resembled Catherine of Aragon somehow, two of them even have the name Catherine.
That’s not a headcanon, it’s pretty much accepted historical gospel.
Catharine of Aragon was the only wife he ever truly loved; for the first decade of marriage or so it was a love match. Idk where all this “he loved Jane” stuff comes from… he didn’t.
Once his murder quest finally resulted in a legitimate son, it starts to look like it dawned on the guy how miserable he was. Makes sense, cause, his only friend (Charles Brandon, Duke of Suffolk) was dying, he had no family left (the deaths of both his sisters, Queen Margaret of Scotland and Duchess Mary of Suffolk* were especially difficult for him and they were both dead before Anne Boleyn), he had been basically bedridden with a leg ulcer for decades, his health was gone, he was surrounded by power-hungry yes-men who went behind his back (Edward Seymour was notorious for this), he’d been excommunicated (Henry was privately Catholic all his life), and his people detested him. Is it any wonder that he looked back to his youth as a popular King, active and healthy, surrounded by the loyal, friends and family abundant, and a beautiful wife he loved (and who loved him!) and the promise of an heir?
He tried to recapture that not by looking inward at how he’d ruined his own life, but deciding that he needed Catherine 2.0. There’s some evidence to suggest that the only reason he fell for Anne Boleyn is because she was basically a younger Catherine and now that Catherine was in menopause after 24 years of marriage there was no hope left for a child. The two women looked very similar, had similar educational backgrounds, and even certain personality trained aligned.
If anyone’s curious I can get into the actual historical evidence behind this claim but my comment is so long rn I don’t know if anyone even made it this far
*Mary was also Queen of France but it was for less than a year, she was forced into it, and she was miserable the entire time. She loved and chose Charles and they were happy for decades so I think she’d much prefer being known by her second husband’s title.
