This video is proof that Mat has RANGE.
I'm right in the middle of doing individual 'best of' songs for the OG cast & matt has the lead on nearly 40 songs!
I'm honestly not surprised! He has an amazing voice and he helped with writing some of the episodes so he deserves it.
Jim too. god they're so talented
@Just Another StarKid Fangirl omg a starkid and horrible histories fan!!! 😍🥰
He has that rrrrrange darling
it's a crime there was never a Horrible Histories Top of the Pops special
OMG that's just a missed opertunity 😂😂😂 but I guess the savage songs special are their version of top of the pops 😂😂😂😂

No but there was a horrible histories prom concert-which is also on you tube
I've always liked how they're able to parody songs so it's clear what the original is but at the same time is completely different
The days when Horrible Histories didn't just parody songs they thought were trending *cough* new Horrible Histories *cough*
Uh excuse me they did bohemian rhapsody
+Bi Cycle I didn't see that, but glad to hear it. Would've been better if it was the old cast though
New HH is blasphemy to the original
@@bi_cycle say it louder for the people at the back🙌😔
@Brandon B-L yeah, the new cast have no chemistry with each other and they just keep forcing in “trends” like putting in Fortnite dancing in one bit.
lets all agree, we are like 16 watching this for memories and sang along to all the hh songs
I'm 18... and I watch HH,with my son all the time and belt my heart out to the music. It's amazing mann.
Yes I'm 16!
I'm 12 😂😂 been watching HH for years
I'm 23 and practically grew up with the HH fandom! I will always love and support the OG cast in whatever they do!

When it gets to "we're history" and now your eyes ate tearing up...
Same......
It takes one second of the music and you know what is coming
Nah that makes me cry every time cause it marks the end of my child hood
True. When the original cast up sticks and left we knew something special had passed. The replacements did their best but just weren't the same.
Same
When I was younger The Dick Turpin song was my favourite song ever
It's mine now....
Yeah it's great

Yes. In class the teacher was nice and at the end of day would put on 1 song and we always said that one. He didn't mind bc it was educational
Everyone who is a girl 😂
So many of them didn't have original songs. Just shows how wonderful the writers were. I miss this show.
Even then they’re either inspired or parodied but still takes skill
@@tattie.b8594 Definitely. They`re all so talented
Yep they are actually better than most songs and you're learning!

Yet another reference slipped into Hamilton! Never noticed it before 😂
Emily Booth when was it said in Hamilton?
Sophie Ingram George Washington says it in Right Hand Man
My biggest flex is the fact that I could sing the verses for the monarchs song as well as the chorus

They actually said in an interview that they wrote the Monarch Song. So I don't think they parodied any song

Lmao I just came from your channel
The tune in the background sounds familiar from somewhere. Maybe I'm just a wee bit too obsessed with Horrible Histories and have listened to it so many times that it's burned into my brain lmao
You have no idea how bad I’ve wanted a video like this.
I sat down and watched it with my family
Me too! It's been so long😭😂
It becomes way more obvious what they're parodying as the show goes on
Yeah the new horrible history(seasons 6-8) is so bad😭😭

@@skye5793 Yes I do agree, I have watched series 7 (It's the only HH series they play on BBC iPlayer) And it is not very good with the cast doing things like fortnight dances and trying to make new "Trends", and I'd hate to say it but its very cringe. Series 6 was 7/10 with cast members Lawry, Simon, Jim, and Sarah returning for a guest star but Series 7 has become as I have said not very good. But thankfully UK Netflix has Horrible histories series 1-5 so we can still watch it.
@@nikolajancy6711 I agree
That last sing gave me goosebumps. Rip good horrible histories, you will be sorely missed
I remember i cried when I saw it on TV lol
It definitely had that tone of finality about it when I first heard it
Yeah I cried so bad
1:20 damn never noticed horrible histories parodying Monty python before now, although it's obvious python was definitely an inspiration for the style of humour.
Yeah me too!
A lot of the writers also wrote mont python
@@SvensHistoryLab I don’t think any of the members of Monty Python actually worked on horrible histories
It reminds me more of Men in Tights than Monty python though.
Let's not forget Boudica's little nod to M's Pop Muzik with the "Colchester, London, St. Albans, everybody talkin' bout dead Romans" bit~
The best parody they did by far was the Dandy Highwayman with Stand and Deliver haha iconic!! They even got the “huh!” in too! Ah my childhood :))
And he said ‘stand and deliver ‘ in it too
@@luvrdelreyy and Prince Charming ha!

I usually start crying at it- ;-;
I remember I was like 11 when the song was on TV and I cried for like half an hour after it lol. Still kinda cry tho
I get chills and I cry because this great show has ended 😞
Yep. Every time
I cry every time I listen to it
I learnt more from this show the in my actually history class at school. I actually used some of the song to help me pass history.
Same!
I sat in classes and exams singing the monarchs song
BROO SAMEEE I learned more history from watching 6 seasons than the 4 years of history I did at school
My history literally used horrible history to teach us some history
Same, I actually corrected my teachers and they were like ‘oH’
Y’all talking about Mat while I’m still tryna comprehend that Ben is both Henry VIII and William Wallace.
King of Bling, Dick Turpin song, the cleopatra one and the English monarchs were the best out of all of them. You can't change my mind.
I agree 100%
I agree 100%
As a raf cadet I personally think the raf pilot song is the best
Pachacuti is s vibe. And we’re history
And the Mary seacole song
And William Wallace
And the Borgia family
And the Henry the seven song
And the Rosa parks song
And Marcus ligmus Crassus song
And the transportation song
Read the books and the magazines as a kid in primary school. Watched the series as a teenager when I came home from secondary school. Bought the books for my class and every history lesson plan involved searching for a relevant Horrible Histories clip as a teacher.
Literally grew up with this series and still love it as much as ever
I may or may not have the got the books for Christmas this year
What a great, and cool, teacher you are. Lucky students. Wish Horrible Histories had been around when I was a kid. Wish I'd had good teachers too. My kids, I'm glad to say, have grown up with HH, and my 17yo son is history obsessed thanks to HH and the Age of Empires computer game (and history-mad parents) hasn't decided what he wants to do with it though.
The Charles Dickens song is a mix of this charming man and heaven knows I'm miserable now
There is also a trace in there of Sheila, Take A Bow in that parody.
Grear job! I did find two though that were actualy inspired by a particular band:
--"Boudicca" was inspired by The Ting Tings, namely "Thats Not My Name". Its not a direct parody, but you definitely bear the influence
- The Suffragettes was inspired by Bananaramas, namely the song "Venus".
Honestly, Boudicca has more of a, “Cherry Bomb,” by the Runaways vibe.
It suddenly seems like there’s a tsunami of HH videos on UA-cam right now.
It's probably just the algorithm. You might have engaged with HH content more than before at some point so it's pushing more your way
I love it😂 Also the official HH channel has finally uploaded the songs as videos - they were hard to find for ages!
Surely "miserable" is a parody of "heaven knows I'm miserable now" great video tho
The title is definitely a parody of the smiths "heaven knows I'm miserable now" but the actual song melody and visuals of Charles dickens "miserable" seemed far more similar to "this charming man" to me
@@rebeccapenn7603 I think it's definitely a mixture of both
@@rebeccapenn7603 kinda like how the RAF Pilot song is definitely a parody of Relight My Fire, but they still mention other Take That songs in the lyrics
You know when Horrible Histories songs are better than so called music today😏
you are the only valid human. Doing gods work
I love how they parodied loads of musicals ☺️
it makes my theatre kid heart so happy :))) I love this show so much everyone in it is so talented and I learn so much!
Yes I am so happy
I believe "it's not true" was based of the laughing policeman song
Great find!
I think that this song could also be a parody of "Baggy Trousers" by Madness. They sound quite similar, especially at the beginning and at the ending of the verses.
yes i always assumed this! the laughing policeman song was my grandad’s favourite song
The English Civil War song and the RAF song are so underrated
This !! They’re two of my favourites
Factssss
You missed one: The Horrible Histories Theme itself! ;)
It's based on "I'd like to know" by Supergrass (which is so cool!)
Im just rewatching this, how has nobody realised the dickens one was based off of 'Heaven knows im miserable now'. His last line even is 'Heaven knows im miserable now'
I think its definitely a mix of both! ^-^
@@withintheyar2324 It's mainly just because the smiths songs are all fairly similar in instruments and such
season 1: fun songgs for kids
season 5: *smiths parody, tom jones parody*
The best part is when you notice that Simon is struglling to follow the moves in the civil war song
God bless your soul for not cutting off the last syllable of “horrible” in We’re History. I was so scared you’d just miss out that bit, because it’s so beautiful.
the owain glyndwr song also has a section of Kiss,, as Tom Jones had covered the song (originally by Prince)
Look at the development throughout the series, love them all but you can definitely see how their budget increased!! I can’t believe how many songs of these I just adoreeee

These guys were BRILLIANT. I found these by chance and was hooked--especially "Stupid Deaths". I got that most of them were parodies of other songs, but this is an excellent resource. I could binge watch these for hours.
never before appreciated just how good mat's impressions of adam (and the ants) and morrissey were, damnnnn
IVE BEEN NEEDING THIS VIDEO FOR A SOLID SEVEN YEARS

Ben actually sounds so good in that first bit omg
i’d be lying if i said i didn’t sob the first time i heard the finale when i was younger
I’d be lying if I didn’t say the same
Me to so sad that mat wasn't in the later series 😭😭
I thought The Luddites was specifically I Fought the Law by The Clash
Well, they do quote the title line of that song 😂
I’d say more RaTM tbh with The Luddites as that is the vibe it goes.
If you have any ideas for the originals of the songs I missed or couldn't find I'd love to hear them! I've made a list of all your suggestions in the description!

The Victorian invention song is actually a parody off “flash bang wallop” from the musical half a six pence
@@colonyofrats4193 great find!
A gorgious georgian lady sounds like it could be based on the 'National Anthem of the Ancient British'
Yes! More Horrible Histories content, please! :)
For Blackbeard's song, I believe I can properly pin down the original as "When I was a Lad" from Gilbert and Sullivan's "HMS Pinafore"
Can we talk about of some of the song were proper original songs. God this was a great show
the fact that they did a cover of the smiths AND the cure. taste.
Always wanted a vid like this
Jim is underrated, I mean his High notes!🙌
Yess
Especially in the Winston Churchill song
I think Shakespeare's song was supposed to be a parody of a Michael Bublé song.
I think it's closer to Beyond The Sea by Bobby Darin.
Making the Pilgrim Fathers song a parody of Empire State of Mind is so genius
This is the best thing I've ever seen

Surely, the Alexander the Great song spoofs Coldplay, especially Viva la Vida, which has the line "that was when I ruled the world", which fits!
Wow, very surprised no one got that... :S I don't even like Coldplay that much, and I could hear it!
OMG this is so good, thanks for this I knew some of the originals but was wondering others. I can't stop watching HH videos, send help!!!!
This really helps me realise how much weaker the Series 1 songs were (besides Born 2 Rule OFC)
I think the songs were much better when they weren’t trying to use lyrics from the book and made more original parodies but that isn’t a bad things as it shows the growth
Thanks for this. There are a few songs there I knew were parody of a genre of music but didn't realize they came from specific examples. On the flip side, I think Boudica could be a straight up parody of Cherry Bomb by The Runaways.
3:49 omg I love how they also used that in ghosts 😂
First of all, sleeping on the sidewalk is such and underrated queen song
Second, I had no clue they made a parody of this
Why the hell am I so happy
Literally I was so suprised and wasn't convinced at first but it's so reminiscent of Sleeping on the sidewalk which a masterpiece
THE PLAGUE SONG WAS A PARODY OF THE OLD MAN BLUE FROM CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG HOW DO PEOPLE NOT KNOW THIS ITS AN AMAZING MUSICAL
Dear Author, thank you so much for this storm of emotions and lots of new knowledge about the origins of my favourite songs! Great job!
the scary special in season 2 also parodied Michael Jackson when they do the thriller bit!
I love what Jim brings to the songs
William Wallace Scottish Rebel is based on Slash and Lemmy's Doctor Alibi. Practically the same song haha
I think these songs worked so well because they were closer to being loving homages rather than parodies. Many of the inspirations aren’t 1:1 or they are more so a take on a general genre rather than a specific song. I think that helped the songs feel more unique and it also helped with the flow and rhythm as they weren’t stuck following a pre-established formula
Obviously this wasn’t always the case but even when they were closer to their source material, it still felt different enough
TL:DR they were better done than the newer songs which felt more like baby’s first Weird Al
What a great video Rebecca, well done on all that effort! Also shows how great Richie Webb was in making the music close to originals without getting sued!
I started trying to figure these out a few weeks ago and got stuck so many times I gave up, so I can really appreciate how much hard work must have gone into making this video! Well done! It's certainly helped me place a lot of the parodies that I knew I knew but didn't know where from (although I'm sure the 'aye ya-ee ya-ee ya ya' bit in Alexander the Great is from something more modern and very specific that I still can't put my finger on)

I loved watching Horrible Histories. Probably more than my son did at the time. It was fun, entertaining and a great way to learn history. ❤️
I only discovered this show a week ago (not British). I may have come across some of their stuff before, cause i love history, but anything "horrible" wouldn't appeal to me.
But since last week I'm completely hooked.

Could you do one with the new inferior cast, I don’t watch it any more so just want to know if the quality went down
I can give it a go! I've never watched those series either but might do one for the new series & possibly one for the HH film too
Rebecca Penn cool 👍
The quality went down...
The quality DEFINITELY went down, & it's gone further down each series, imo. I've only watched series 6 really, & there *were* some good songs- I love the Magna Carta Epic Rap Battle- but the series 7 & 8 songs I've heard...
And think seriously about watching the movie- it's so bad it made me want to stab my eyes out! :D

Thank you for posting this. I just discovered HH a month ago and have been devouring every show I could find. As a senior a lot of the pop stuff just passes me by. Is the Cleopatra one also parodying Ra-Ra Rasputin? Nice video by the way!
Maybe-but bad romance makes more sense-mark anthony and cleopatra's romance ended badly-and changed the course of history!
The specific lyric is, but the song/character as a whole is definitely Gaga
So glad you didn't go any further. The original cast was all we needed
