    Many tool steels are not hardened until after all machining of the part is done. However, some can be hardened first, and then EDMed, to gain shape, final use, etc.

    Tool Steels are my Favorite Classifications; the tool steels are all made in electric furnace with high quality standards. AISI, SAE and other organization guarantee the quality control of "Tool Steels"...Goo Job!

    It would be useful to see all of that in a table. The fact that somewhat different information is presented for each type means the listener has to try to structure the information while listening. It'd be easier to see it already structured.

    Tool steel was my college nickname!

  • @melgross
    @melgross Рік тому +1

    It used to be that “tool steel” was just medium and high carbon steel. No real alloying, that newer steel is high speed steel. He didn’t mention an important tool/HSS steel…cobalt steel from 5 to 8% normally, but also in hard to get 10%.

    • @wyattbrule12688
      @wyattbrule12688 6 років тому +1

      Philippe Ritchie see the MTC - material test certificate. Also you can buy a PMI machine - positive material identification, lets you spot test material and get a chemical analysis. Depends how much information you need. Carbon steel is magnetic, austinitic stainless steel is not magnetic, etc.

      @@wyattbrule12688 regarding the mobile PMI device, it cost several thousands of dollars and has to be calibrated often for accuracy. My customers have reported numerous false readings from accidental contamination and failure to calibrate the device beforehand.
