This is what my professor said: "Type 304 is the basic 18Cr8Ni (18/8) austenitic stainless steel, so widely used that it accounts for about 50% of all stainless steel production. Type 304 is a metastable grade which has martensite in its microstructure after deformation. Type 316 which contains up to 3 wt% Mo, offers an improved general and pitting corrosion resistance, making it the material of choice marine applications and coastal environments."
I have heard that the reason austenitic steel is not magnetic is because the nickel and chromium keeps iron in its gamma state. Gamma iron by itself is reached at the curie temperature which is how hot the iron needs to be to lose magnetism temporarily. Beta iron and alpha iron(most common atomic structures of iron) are both magnetic but gamma iron is not magnetic.
I want a car made from stainless steel or that grade of aluminium that is stronger then most forms of steel! I don't know why they don't just make every metal appliance or office appliance out of thick stainless steel, it's cheep but strong and wont rust either. It's so annoying when things break. Metal is supposed to be STRONG!!!!
