I don't know who made the mod but despite its apparent shortcomings, you people have my heartfelt gratitude. Played it for two years before Warhammer came out, it was so brilliant as Byzantium (late age) - I powerplayed at times but it was so fulfilling to re-write this particular bit of history. Byzantium from Italy to Volga and from the Tatres to Sahara! Please, excuse the lack of modesty but it was beyond brilliant!
Technically speaking it shouldn't even be called "The Byzantine Empire" as its an anachronistic term created by historians to differentiate between the Eastern Roman Empire and the West. Until the day Constantinople fell in 1453 it's citizens and the world knew it as the Roman Empire.
it literally shoudl be the roman empire, the turks called them romans, the arabs called them romans, the bulgarians, the hungarians, fuckign everyone called them romans, they were roman. "Byzantine " was a name some german stuck o them to give creidbility to his non holy, nor roman, nor empire.
@@cseijifja eastern roman scholars themselves referred to the region as Byzantium in reference to the original city before Constantinople called Byzantium. The people of Constantinople and the surround area even called themselves Byzantine. The west refered to them as Greeks not Byzantines or Romans because the people were Greeks since Rome was totally independent from the eastern empire for much of its history.
@@torinjones3221 The region of thrace yes. However not the empire. It wasn't until ~1800 that the greeks stopped calling themselves as heirs of byzantium 'Romiaon'
Technically speaking many countries shouldn't be called this and that. Germans don't call their county "Germany", they call it Deutchland, Chinese aren't Chinese, they're the Han and their country is Zhonggua, but should we call them that way? Or, if we go all historical here, then there were no Kingdom of Spain till about 1716, there were Castile and Aragon and Navarre and others that just happen to be united under one crown. Should we stop calling it "Spain", at least for the period of XVI-XVII centuries? "Byzantine Empire" is a useful term to separate ancient Roman Empire from East-oriented Greek Roman Empire.
@@hoarder1919 If referring to after the Empire of Nicaea reconquered Constantinople, yes I agree. It was not a direct continuation of the Roman imperial throne at that point but a new reconstructed entity using it for legitimacy. Especially if you ask Trebizond rulers around the same time. However your examples given are besides the point. Duetchland is the literal Germanic word for Germany, as would be Alemania for some Romances. Same goes for China. The old word Cathay is also the case as mentioned before. They originate from legitimate etymological sources that originated from at-the-time contacts. "Byzantine" was made up on the spot. Medieval Roman is a fine term to distinguish the time periods. Even the most famous "Byzantine" emperor was as much a Roman as Diocesan and Constantine. (His family hails from the Latin Danube communities that would become the Romanians in time). The law structure was very much Roman. Al-be-it the culture was very much Greco-Roman.
Hmm, you’ve been doing a lot more reviews recently, and I personally think the videos are incredibly interesting. I love your brutally honest opinion, and the fact that if you didn’t enjoy something you would tell us, unlike other youtubers who would suck up to the developers.
Pleased to see someone reviewing Stainless Steel after all this time. Apologies to everyone for the bugs, it was released before it was fully tested. I recommend installing the bug fixer compilation to correct most of the errors. There's plenty of additional sub-mods which add features to the game. Due to limitations of the game engine really big mods can crash after a few hours playing due to memory issues, so save frequently.

@heathenhurst yes it is, there are a few ways, you can use a launcher (forget what it's called) some mods have it's own exe and the other way is to replace, americas, crusades, English isles, and the fourth one with the mod and launch through those, you can find tutorials online by googling it.
@heathenhurst No worries, I was wrong with one of my directions, don't replace the contents of the America, British(englush) Isles, Crusade or Teutonic, Rename them, so if you use warhammer end times, rename the folder to America and call America something else, for example.
@Frederik Nielsen are you talking about Warhammer or Third Age? Because I can tell you everything you said applies to Third Age, but I played BoTET a year ago and it was actually much easier than Third Age. Did a Reikland Campaign and ended up conquering half of the world on VH. Without late game units like steam tanks. The only faction I really struggled against was ogre kingdoms and the chaos invasion full stacks, but honestly, you have so many allies as Empire that the foe has to grind through them all before being able to reach you.
Another nice touch is tech progression is more important than in M2. In M2, it's just everyone gets gunpowder then ocean-going ships. Here, better types of armor is unlocked with time so having a huge city or citadel isn't enough to get advanced plate.
I have personally found that SS6.4 fixes some of the pathfinding issues of cavalry and makes them more responsive to commands but also making them slower
I love how honest you are with yourself, no BS. This vid was cool, definitely going to download M2 again for it. Some more time looking at the new parts of the map , if turn times are longer, quality of life changes, stuff like that would've been good additions. But I get that you don't want it to be too long, so whatever I'm good with it either way.
Well the map covers a hell of a lot more then just the Crusader states but yes it is great. I use a mod that balances units a bit and increases unit sizes by 70%, its great.

It may be a small point but I really like how you spoke a bit about how to get it to run properly. I think the gameplay was well summarized with "it's the same thing just a bit more here and there" but it may be worth talking about how it plays if it's sufficiently different. I'm sure you already know that but I figured I'd let you know. Thanks for doing these!
My brother in christ, i been watching your videos for years. 4k hours on mw2. It made me smile to see your subscribers up to half a million. wow, i keep getting banned for stupid shit so i tip my hat to you for making it to the top.
This is also one of my favourite mods, period. Some things that weren't mentioned that interested people should take note of: 1) There are two recruitment systems in this game. Legend had "Real Recruitment" turned off, this is a system that limits your army diversity quite a bit in the early game, by forcing you to unlock units at the right time. So, a unit like Lancers isn't even unlocked until the 15th century or so. In the beginning of the early campaign, you can't even recruit feudal knights! I personally love the system, but a lot of people don't. Still, it's another really cool option, and the only other TW experience that comes close to this is Attila's tech tree that sees units replaced over time. It keeps your unit diversity constantly evolving, which keeps the game interesting over time. There is real significance to early vs. high vs. late units. 2) Pike and Shot actually works! You might have noticed in the video that the Janissary musketeers were actually shooting steadily. Stainless Steel incorporates a fire by rank system that works very well, and it makes gunpowder much more fun (and much more effective) to use. Similarly, pikemen are far more effective, because they no longer have swords that they'll pull out constantly. Because pikemen and gunpowder units are fixed, and especially if you have real recruitment turned on, campaigns can stay really interesting late into the game, because of how much warfare will evolve over time. This is especially true for the European nations, who have the most complete and diverse rosters. 3) Unit rebalance is really good in this mod. Legend touched on this. Cavalry get speeds reworked, and get much higher charge bonuses with weaker base stats. Archers can still lob arrows over the heads of their units, but crossbows need a more direct trajectory, meaning they need to be positioned with more care. Archers have much weaker missile damage to make up for this, which gives you a really interesting tradeoff. Two hander infantry get a much-needed buff, making them much tougher, and making Gothic Foot Knights finally the kings of the battlefield! 4) Campaign fluff makes the campaign side of the game is just more interesting in general. Growth rates are reduced, so that you can only even reach the highest tier settlements on the most fertile parts of the map. Good luck turning Aarhus into a huge city, or Oslo into a Citadel - without some insanely good governors it just won't happen. There is an interesting system of titles, so putting governors in different cities will give them different bonuses. It makes the micromanagement side more flavourful. There are probably a couple hundred mercenary units, and they evolve over the course of the campaign too, so that late game mercenary armies are completely viable. If you have the money, you can create an army of Swiss pikemen and Italian Condotierri that can take on anything thrown against them. Once again, it just gives the campaign more flavour. 5) On the topic of crashing: Yes, this game can be unstable, but there are ways to help this. In addition to the LAA patch, you should also look up the Stainless Steel bugfix compilation. For me, this fixed almost all of the CTD's I encountered. 6) There are two submods for this game that are both fairly popular, the Historical Improvement Project and Titanium. Both mix up the gameplay quite a bit, though I prefer regular Stainless Steel. Point is, there is a lot for you to experience here. 7) The Muslim rosters suck. They get almost no attention. If you love the Muslim nations it's something to think about. They're still relatively fun to play, but the experience is much more complete with the European nations.
My only issue is that Citadels are far too difficult to upgrade needing a 10 Chivalry Governor with Pop increasing traits (even then there is no telling it would reach the minimum requirement) while I agree it should be difficult so as you can't spam your best units at least decrease the required pop from 22500 to 20000 or 21000.
To be honest, the one most impressive thing in this whole video was the battlefield. Never before have I seen such a interesting battlefield in a random Medieval 2 skirmish battle. Those plateaues are cool, as are the escarpments.
that may have something to to with med ii’s janky relationship with map geometry. glad the team got around it a bit and provided some interesting map layouts.
U should go more in details about this mod especially on mechanics and all the options u can on/off for the mod, that really blasts the full mod and make the mod itself the most complex mod ever created for a total war game. However, it's great to see people still play and advertise this mod in 2019, so congrats for that. I still play this mod too, and I never ever play vanilla coz of the incoherencies of the history and campaign on that.

It was a good review Legend. You did well in showing of the factions and and the battle itself. However I would have liked for you to mention the possibility for real recruitment, supply lines and different behavioural AI as that does add to the challenge of a campaign. I would consider it a good idea for you to continue these series. Mods usually add something interesting and an opinion from a veteran will help people discover these gems. Keep up the good work.

Great video. For future mods please share more info on the campaign gameplay. For instance balance-wise, for me the most noticeable feature of SS was how badass the mongols are. So if someone starts in the east, it can be a tough challange to keep them at bay.
Another thing to definitely note for some people who care about it is balance of the units. For example in stainless steel two handers are now actually really powerful, if not the most powerful units cause of their armor piercing attack bonus. Overall armor piercing is the way to go since armor values have been increased, and thus your favorite units like gothic knights and the French lancers are now actually very powerful cavalry. Archers are now useful due to increased range over crossbows, while crossbows themselves are good for closer-ranged punch.

You should cover Age of Petty Kings. It’s a Medieval 2 mod that covers the era of battling petty kingdoms in Westeros shortly before the arrival of Aegon the Conqueror. The mod Fire and Ice also adds the White Walkers/Others as a playable faction(mainly for fun because the WW are OP as hell) as well as the Targaryens.

I really liked knowing about the expanded map & unit recruitment changes, the factions, and the time scale A mention of how the change in map size & factions effected campaigns (take longer to travel, enemy AI more aggressive or something) would be the only thing I was left wanting to know about this mods GrandC For graphic improvements maybe a side by side or A B would be interesting, as I havnt loaded med2 this year. Not a huge editing job but its at least 15mins of extra work

I love this MOD but the crashing issue was driving me crazy. Thanks for letting me know about the large address aware software(unfortunately I'm not that techy). Something in your review you forgot to mention certain technologies like armour upgrades are only available once you reach a certain historical date in a similar way to gunpowder especially if you play the early era like me. There are also 3 different types of AI to choose when installing the game.
5:23 Getting a citadel as a human player is nigh on impossible. I have built one exactly twice in my SS playthroughs, and both times were when I captured a fortress, noted it had an unusually high population when I went to sack, Occupied instead, and managed to get a build order in for a citadel before a ton of people moved out (pop loss starts at 5% or so, even if you have a high Chiv or admin general present). Any other time I've held a citadel is when I captured an already built one. That's the one thing I really don't like about SS, getting the last castle upgrade, especially since so many units are locked behind it. I don't mind it being difficult, but when you have a 10 Chiv governor with Active Builder, an Architect, and several other pop growth encouraging mods and whatnot and it sits there at 0% growth with 21450 pop for dozens of turns until said governor dies...yeah, I'll leave a few select AI castles alone and let them do the citadel building for me. Hell there was one game I played where the freaking Rebels built a citadel at Oporto...yes, I specifically remember it because I was playing Novgorod and I happened upon it while patrolling with a ship and being miffed that it was on the other side of the map from me.
Third age total war divide and conquer submod for the next mod review, as it is a activly developed mod and has a big playerbase. Or the italian war as it covers the Renaissance very well and that isn't really covered in any total war so far. It works well with the rarely played pike and shot/crosshow units with gunpower artillery, with is normally not available in mod or only in the very late game.
That is excellent Legend. It's beautiful the music is beautiful. The attention to detail is magnificent on the units. I've just seen three kingdoms campaign and a siege battle and it looks like a cartoon compared to this.. I've lost all hope for it. I have to learn to mod. This is where it's at. Thanks a million.

@@Toshiro_Mifune Be aware of the cavalry charges! They are devastating. I was on a hill and my infantry was charged, and it was a realy steep hill and the cav was slowly moving and struggling to run up hillm but they managed to mow down 2 or 3 ranks of my infantry. It´s because of the increased mass of mounted units in the "descr_mount" file and in the vanilla the mount units mass is around 2 and in stainless steel it is about 3 - 4 points of mass, so they have a lot of devastating power. Best mod for Rome 1 hands down.
If somehow EB and Roma Surrectum combined that would be the best thing ever

Pleased to see someone reviewing Stainless Steel after all this time. Apologies to everyone for the bugs, it was released before it was fully tested. I recommend installing the bug fixer compilation to correct most of the errors. There's plenty of additional sub-mods which add features to the game. Great War Mod!
Medieval 2: warhammer, beginning of the end times, please
Elder Scrolls Total War.
Magician artillery is crazy tho
It's unbalanced an full of ESO stuff (that doesn't fit in the Third Era where the mod is set in)
MAGICIAN ARTILLERY ONLY
Another nice touch is tech progression is more important than in M2.
Cover Broken Crescent it's the best Mod based on the crusader era

Great idea for a series. Along with the top 5 videos, these have renewed my interest in the channel.
This is cool, you should do more man
This is also one of my favourite mods, period. Some things that weren't mentioned that interested people should take note of:
1) There are two recruitment systems in this game.
Even by the 1400s your still using your Fortress level troops
To be honest, the one most impressive thing in this whole video was the battlefield. Never before have I seen such a interesting battlefield in a random Medieval 2 skirmish battle. Those plateaues are cool, as are the escarpments.
that may have something to to with med ii’s janky relationship with map geometry. glad the team got around it a bit and provided some interesting map layouts.

This is an awesome mod! I like how it remains familiar to vanilla in some respects.
Italians have the coolest armour, they need their own game or at least DLC like Britannia.

Best to counter with another cavalry, i tried javelin light cav counter-charge and they stopped the charge without many casualties, then you can move in with infantry to fight...
