@Yuffie3982 I would agree if there was a better alternative than SONAR. However, as it stands, SONAR is the fastest and most efficient way to map the sea. Otherwise, I doubt they would be using SONAR.
@smasci that's a particular frequency of sonar (actually LF), which is not side-scan compatible, Don't whinge about condescension when you're in the wrong. To see a 6" fish, you need a really HF SONAR, on the order of 6-10 kHz, which attenuates to uselessness within a matter of hundreds of yards and almost conplete silence within 2 NMi. Please educate yourself first, ESPECIALLY before pointing the finger at others.
@VekyEvaEva I think you didn't understand what she said: "Proyects are on their way to find out what 'LIES' in the deep"... By the way, fishes with light really exist, but they live very much deeper, where the sunlight can't reach.
@Yuffie3982If you reread the before statement, I did not write that you mentioned that there were existing alternatives. I wrote that you said there should be something better, which you do/did. I respectfully replied simply by saying if you were so adamant about the situation you should be out helping those trying to find better alternatives to SONAR. Now calm down, my original argument wasn't even against you.
@Yuffie3982 Yeah Yuffie, you were a bit equivocal with your sentence about alternatives. It could have been taken out of context (what p51 probably did) and interpreted as there are existing alternatives, but we are not using them yet; there are alternatives that can exist, but we have not found them yet. There should be something better of course
@Nukefuzion What was it exactly I took out of context? I never interpreted that he mentioned the existence of alternatives, merely that he was of the opinion that there should be.
@Yuffie3982 "we need to acknowledge the problems it causes and find better alternatives." "we need to FIND better alternatives." Unless I am wrong, these are two direct implications of you saying something should be done about finding better alternatives. That something NEEDS to be done. Two direct quotes from two different comments. I don't see the misinterpretation. I don't see how this is so difficult. You're right, must be those pesky comprehension skills.
@smasci treppenwitz time, and another thing. I was going to recommend this to my family, given that I WAS a SONAR tech in the USN, and kind of like my family to see what kind of stuff I was doing that doesn't involve classification, but thanks to your threaddumping, I cannot. Thanks for nothing.
@FreeeeS its like the only issues we have r left in the bottom of the ocean!!!! lets deal with the issues on the surface and then take care on whats not even seen!! this is a crime!
@Yuffie3982 If there was something better they'd be using it. But there isn't. Just because you say there should be something better does not mean we have the technology to make it so. It's the best we have right now, so suck it up or get off this comment board and invent something better.
+THE OVERCLOCKED LIFE turd, I just have the decency to not slur people for stupid comments or videos without giving them a chance to clarify first. You seem to be going around just wasting other peoples time.
Totally depends on the frequency and the loudness of the sound and if it's impulsive or continuous. Not all sound hurts them, sometimes they don't care, sometimes it bothers them. Just like people (except they're fish etc.). It's incorrect to say all sound underwater harms the creatures.
I wish they would go find my dads plane at 300', the U.S. Navy refuses to do it over 130'
@smasci Agreed! Sonar is horrible for marine mammals who, as we know, rely on sound for much of their daily activities.
@Yuffie3982 I would agree if there was a better alternative than SONAR. However, as it stands, SONAR is the fastest and most efficient way to map the sea. Otherwise, I doubt they would be using SONAR.
Thank you!!

Wasn't there an article in Nat Geo a month ago or so that said how sonar damaged the hearing of certain sea animals such as whales?

All of this just helps find oil gold and natural gas and so on .

@smasci probably there are no whales in those coral area. It's too shallow.
could they also be detecting coal while announcing coral? just a dumb question =D
Kto iz Makari. Stavte like
Yeah but will it blend?
Nobody is protecting the oceans though.
what are they looking for exactly?
For the most part
@smasci they dont use sonar to detect whale because is big and can be easily detected by other devices, duh
The moon is better mapped. Very strange situation.
Map it guys, then no expensive hunts for missing planes.
Receita para superar desafios: Habilidade e muita loucura ! Formidavel.
sooo does this video say what. sonar stands for. this is for my sience class
@SJ Gekht sound navigation and ranging
Sonar stands for Sound Navigation and Ranging
Landon Tullis thanks lol! It’s too late but thanks
manage the habitat for the fish ??? those fkin fish lived long before we existed and they did fine..these are excuses.
I was going to say the same thing.
+Keivan Afsharian EXACTLY, all we need to do is leave them, not manage them urghhhhhhhhh.
the boats lagging
@smasci poor whales :( I guess were just too lazy to dive to the bottom of the ocean and map it out ourselves.
Tim Battista!
Dave Batista! Coincidence!
whales have ears! they can hear you fart in the ocean. Please be curtious and hold it in till you are out of the water.
great
@smasci haha no were the hell did you hear that
sonar ftw

doesn't sonar disturb and/or hurt whales and fish?!
haven't u passed ninth grade?
+THE OVERCLOCKED LIFE turd, I just have the decency to not slur people for stupid comments or videos without giving them a chance to clarify first. You seem to be going around just wasting other peoples time.
smokingskill yes, sonar does hurt marine life
nope, because the number of frequency are diffrent, so whale who have echolocation doesn't receive sonar that transmitted by the ship.
Totally depends on the frequency and the loudness of the sound and if it's impulsive or continuous. Not all sound hurts them, sometimes they don't care, sometimes it bothers them. Just like people (except they're fish etc.). It's incorrect to say all sound underwater harms the creatures.
