      I didn’t learn physics or chemistry in high school since I was an art student.
      I turned 22 this year and this is when I finally started learning about science.

    Not to multi post but this is exactly my experience after I encouraged a friend to come to college who was on the brink of signing up for the military bc of his low GPA. Immediately once he gained the confidence, he started hacking my capacity for STEM and I saw the worst version of him. He was genuinely just a terrible person, and through it all after we graduated, he STILL sought me out for help after a mutual friend had a schizophrenic breakdown. My sole mistake was probably letting him linger as long as he did throughout my journey. Believe believe them the first time. The first sign of disrespect should be the last.

Supporting others is admirable, but when it starts to hinder your growth or becomes one-sided, it’s okay to step back. • @authorjond
      @authorjond  11 днів тому +2

      Starting Precalculus at 32 is an incredible step forward, and with the right preparation, you’ll do great! Here are some actionable steps to get ready:
      Brush Up on Algebra:
      Focus on foundational skills like solving equations, working with inequalities, and manipulating exponents and radicals.
      Resources like Khan Academy or free algebra workbooks can help reinforce these basics.
      Review Graphing Skills:
      Practice plotting functions, identifying slopes, and understanding intercepts.
      Get comfortable with linear, quadratic, and polynomial graphs.
      Understand Functions:
      Study how functions work, their domains and ranges, and transformations like shifting, reflecting, and scaling graphs.
      Familiarize Yourself with Trigonometry:
      Learn basic trig ratios (sine, cosine, tangent) and how they relate to right triangles.
      Practice using the unit circle-it’s a big part of Precalculus.
      Work on Study Habits:
      Dedicate consistent time each week to practicing problems.
      Use a mix of textbooks, online resources, and videos for a comprehensive understanding.
      Use a Graphing Calculator:
      Familiarize yourself with the calculator you’ll use in class to save time and ensure you’re comfortable solving complex problems.
      Remember, it’s never too late to succeed in math. Consistency is key, so take it one step at a time and trust your abilities. You’ve got this! Don’t forget to subscribe for more tips and support as you move forward.

      Thank you for sharing your journey-it’s clear you’re incredibly resilient and committed to achieving your goals despite the challenges. Balancing two jobs and coursework is tough, but it’s doable with structure and determination. Here are some tips that might help:
      Prioritize Ruthlessly: Identify your most important tasks each week and focus on those. Use a planner or digital calendar to allocate time for work, classes, and study.
      Set Small Goals: Break down your tasks into smaller milestones so you can tackle them bit by bit. Progress, no matter how small, keeps you moving forward.
      Leverage Your Love for Learning: Use your natural curiosity to stay motivated. Connect your coursework to real-world applications that interest you.
      Be Kind to Yourself: Rest and recovery are essential. Even if it feels like an endless tunnel, pacing yourself will help you avoid burnout.
      Seek Support: Don’t hesitate to lean on friends, family, professors, or classmates for help and encouragement.

    why do most people in stem completely disregard the existance of differences in cognative ability. Iq just sounds like a farytail to people in stem. They think everyone is the same, and the differences that exist are so small they can be compensated for by hardwork.

    • @authorjond
      @authorjond  13 днів тому

      Little Miss Realist, you’re tapping into a deep and often overlooked conversation. STEM fields often emphasize hard work and grit because they’re tangible and actionable, but that can sometimes lead to downplaying the very real differences in cognitive ability. While IQ isn’t a "fairy tale," its role is often misunderstood or oversimplified. STEM tends to focus on the idea that effort can bridge most gaps, which, while empowering, doesn’t account for how different starting points and cognitive styles affect learning and problem-solving.
      Acknowledging cognitive diversity doesn’t mean giving up on hard work-it means recognizing that people bring different strengths to the table. Subscribe to my channel for insights on how to leverage your unique abilities to succeed in STEM.

      but when it comes to math majority steoretype that you need to be born with a innate skills to harness this knowledge. Fortunately, this is a myth all you need is the need for it and effort to fulfill that feeling of necessity
      Yes you won't be in the best among the best without the talent. However, you can be pretty darn good at anything as long as you have average intellegence and consistent effort. You're right, but I think that people that are able to go to college / want to pursue / are interested in STEM are already being filtered so when you arrive at college the probability you'll find smart people of roughly the same cognitive capabilities is high. So in a way, a big percentage of the people that are failing classes is due to poor habits/lazyness/etc. So in this case, the general advice to study smrter and harder is good enough.

      I started my engeneering degree a bit late compared to most, and in my experience I'd say there's virtually no such thing as succeeding in stem without a strong work ethic. I was mearly shedding light on the instance of some learners struggling simply because they're just too stupid, I experienced it to a certain degree(in the sense that there was a congenital reason for why I was failing) because I lived through high school with undiagnosed adhd. And I would pass just because I was smart enough to figure stuff out quickly without much hard work.
      After my diagnosis I realized I never learnt how to work hard because my brain just didn't have the mental resources.
      I'm a long way to getting to the bottom of physics and mathematics, but I've improved phenomenally just by taking responsibility for my illness and doing what's required for me to progress. I seriously resonate with your content, keep up with the good work!

    What's your stance on Environmental Science? I'm speaking bachelor's degree level. Is it something you'd consider a lot less heavy duty than most other Science related degrees like Chemistry, Physics, etc. It seems like you need to have a decent amount of everything but not really be a master of any one thing. I'm only really going down this route because I work in the Waste Management realm and I figured something like this would open up other opportunities in this space.

    • @authorjond

      Environmental Science is a valuable and essential field, especially in today’s world where sustainability and resource management are critical. While it may not be as heavily focused on one specific scientific discipline like Chemistry or Physics, it provides a broad and interdisciplinary understanding of environmental issues, combining aspects of biology, chemistry, geology, and policy. It's not about mastering one thing, but rather integrating knowledge across multiple areas to solve complex real-world problems.
      If you’re already working in Waste Management, an Environmental Science degree could indeed open many doors for you, from policy to sustainability to advanced technical roles. It’s a growing field, and the demand for expertise in environmental conservation and management is only increasing. While it might not have the same level of specialization as other sciences, its practical applications are vast and crucial.
      If your goal is to make a bigger impact in the waste management space or environmental policies, this route could be a perfect fit for you.

    You shouldnt have to read a book before the lecture if the lecture is effective. Academia mindset is so backwards if I need to self teach beforehand for the lecture to be of any use then whats the point of even going? Might as well just stay home and teach myself... Which I basically had to to actually get a job in industry.

    • @PaladinLeeroy42069
      @PaladinLeeroy42069 14 днів тому

      Sure. You can teach yourself all this stuff, so quit whining, go learn all of it, and get the job.
      The point of even going is to get the stamp of approval from the professors and the institution, and he’s not talking about making lectures more effective. He’s talking about how YOU can be effective even if you get the worst lecturer possible, which will probably happen. That’s about taking responsibility for your education instead of waiting for it to be handed to you

      Little Miss Control Freak, it’s clear you’ve got a need to have things done your way-nothing wrong with that, but let’s not overlook the bigger picture. Lectures aren’t just about spoon-feeding answers; they’re about engaging, asking the tough questions, and pushing the conversation forward. If you’ve already self-taught, that’s not a flaw in the system-it’s a sign of your drive and initiative.
      But here’s the kicker: no system will ever be perfect, and sometimes the real challenge is letting go of the need for it to be. You’ve already proven you can thrive outside the box, so why not use that to your advantage? Subscribe to my channel for more ways to turn frustration into opportunity and master what’s within your control.
