- Significance of PTH Parathyroid Hormone in Kidney Failure Patients
What are parathyroid glands?
The parathyroid glands are four pea-sized glands placed beneath the thyroid gland, which is the butterfly-shaped gland in your neck.
The primary function of your parathyroid glands is to produce parathyroid hormone (PTH). Sometimes your parathyroid gland produces too little PTH, resulting in low calcium levels in your blood (hypocalcemia), or too much PTH, resulting in excessive calcium levels in your blood (hypercalcemia). Both of these disorders can result in major health issues.
What is Parathyroid Hormone?
PTH is a hormone produced by your parathyroid glands that regulates calcium levels in your blood. It is also in charge of phosphorus and vitamin D levels. When your body produces too much or too little parathyroid hormone, it might induce symptoms associated with elevated blood calcium levels.
Why parathyroid hormone (PTH) is important in our body?
PTH is a hormone produced and released by your parathyroid glands to regulate the quantity of calcium in your blood, not your bones. Calcium is one of the most vital and widely distributed minerals in your body. PTH also regulates phosphorus (a mineral) and vitamin D (a hormone) levels in your blood and bones.
Hormones are molecules that help your body coordinate diverse tasks by transporting information through your blood to your organs, muscles, and other tissues. These signals instruct your body on what to do and when.
