I think the ab crunch machine is a great choice because it's stable and unlike bodyweight exercises, it allows you to actually train to failure and progressively overload the muscle.

Abs are not "the same thing as every other skeletal muscle in the body" in the sense that the area on top on them is the primary repository of adipose tissue in the male body, which can't be said for quads or any other skeletal muscle. So yeah, people quite correctly say that "you need to lose weight to get better abs", singling out the abs in a way that isn't that relevant for the quads and other muscles. Abs (especially lower abs) will be the last muscles to become visible as bodyfat decreases, whereas, say, biceps will be fairly prominent long before that. The point about needing to additionally work the abs to actually make them "pop" is a valid one, however.

My gym has a machine like that. It's an awesome machine but i maxed out the stack. My only option is either cable crunch or weighted decline sit ups.
