You probably wouldn't expect one of the greatest experimental/art pop albums ever made to come from someone who got their start in the music world making corporate-friendly indie pop, but that's what happened with Caroline Polachek. You probably know her for her incredible 2019 album Pang, but she has been releasing music since 2008, releasing 6 projects under 4 different names, along with collaborating, producing, and writing for artists like Blood Orange, Charli XCX, and Beyonce. With her next album, Desire I want to turn into you, coming out in February 2023, I thought it would be interesting to go through her career and see how her style has evolved. She has an incredible artistic mind and is a unique and captivating vocal talent. This is a brief history of Caroline Polachek.

I love how she is just starting to really come into her own and hit peak in her mid-late 30s. Thats inspiring to me. Its never too late. Of course she was doing stuff before, but ever since 2016 she pushed the Yasss-Button and establishes herself as one of the greats.

you know how people say freddie mercury had some physiological advantage that made him such a spectacular singer (my memory is that he could do vibrato better than most and his range was better than most which is where this theory comes from). well this is how i feel about caroline's mastery of her voice. like there's an inhuman advantage, really incredible to listen to. the next stage of human evolution
She yodels, which anyone with decent singing skills can master.
@@RhythmAddictedState she does yodel but even when shes not yodelling her voice is incredibly smooth and she can go up and down the riffs really well. tho i dont listen to a lot of professional yodellers so maybe they do all sound like that
yeah they said the length of his vocal cords made his vibrato oscillate more and so it sounded differently than most
@@brittanyearl8298 I listen to a lot of yodellers and I yodel myself. Anyone with good pitch and decent breath control can learn how to. In yodelling, one uses the passagio between chest voice and head voice (the "crack" or voice break), which EVERYBODY has. I'm not trying to discredit Caroline, but what I'm trying to say is that people yodel NOT because they have some physiological advantage. Literally everyone has a voice crack. The reason why people find yodelling "extreme" or "extraordinary" is because most people find it unusual as they don't listen to a lot of it, if any at all. It's all a matter of acceptance, really. In Western modern and classical music, making your passagio sound obvious isn't deemed "acceptable", so we don't hear a lot of it in general, but in other musical traditions, it's acceptable. And although most Western singers try to hide it, the voice crack is still heard everywhere, but in a more subtle way (Rihanna uses it for dramatic effect, for instance). Sorry for the long paragraph. My point is that with some training and some courage, anyone with good pitch can yodel and record it in a song, just like with "normal" Western pop or R&B singing.
@@RhythmAddictedState this is all really interesting thank you for taking the time to inform 😊 even when shes not yodeling though her voice does sound special to me (hard to tell what's post production though), but a good example of what I mean is her oooOOOoos from sunset- not yodeling, just a pure and well controlled sound
Major Kate Bush vibes for me, which is a huge compliment. A true artist, operating on the edges of pop doing her own interesting, elfin-like, fantasy-and-sci-fi-influenced music with lots of interesting visuals, costumes and movement.
I don't know much about Kate Bush's discography but I grew up listening to her music as she's one of the only pop artists my father would listen to and I definitely agree. I also recently discovered about Imogen Heap and her early band Frou Frou and she's the most similar-sounding artist to Caroline I've found so far.
Yes.
She reminds me of _Bat For Lashes_ in that way.
also major imogen heap vibes
I can't begin to explain how much her music has ment to me. I never grew up in a music house hold and chairlift was the first ever band I ever got into and learned their discography and heated them from Romeo on nba2k16 sound track. And pretty much she has been the only artist I ever really listened to religiously. I got to see her live in March 2022 in Saint Louis and it was the second greatest moment of my life only second to the birth of my son. I was front row and she looked right at me! Moment I could never forget, I'm glad she's getting the reconituon she greatly deserves. I have every chairlift album and all her albums, plus billions signed and her new album preordered.
this is so sweet, thanks for sharing!
Wow. i remember really enjoying Romeo on 2k as well but forgetting about it when the games cycle ended. i got back into Caroline’s stuff around 2021 and It was only then when I realized i’ve always been a fan of hers without even knowing! Ever since then I’ve seen her at Lollapalooza and I’m trying to get tickets to the spiraling tour if the price is right. cant wait for the album
I was at that show in St. Louis, and I’m so excited to go see her in Chicago for this tour! She’s so enchanting
Saw her live last year and all I can say its almost like a siren calling us to the sea! Her voice is phenomenal!
i couldn't freaking believe her voice when i saw her perform. like, i knew she could sing... but holy frick!!!!!!
she gives a lot of insightful information on Charli's Best Song Ever podcast. She was actually trained as an opera singer for many years, and she even released an aria from a new Royal Opera House piece along with Sunset that really shows off her skills ;)
Ooh, good to know. I will have to listen.
that makes so much sense
she just been serving SO MUCH in the past years like i’ll forever love her
I heard the chairlift song ‘I belong in your arms’ in heartstopper and fell in love with it, and then found out it was Caroline’s band! I had no idea she had such a big history in music. Love her.
So talented, POP is a great form of art when we have great musicians like Caroline, XCX, Tove Lo, Kimbra, Rina, Carly, Marina etc...
i love pop

I can’t wait for her concert next week in London! So lucky to experience her new album live! ❤
LUCKYYYYY
Thank you so much for your comment! I'm going to Paris for a family trip this week and, if caroline was touring in London this week, I figured she would be in Paris around the same time- hadn't even thought to check earlier. Got my ticket and am so excited! Thanks!
@@delphinedelphinedelphine enjoy your trip, the new album will be lit 🔥
Want to mention that Amanaemonesia is a banger and it's one of the first uses of her vocal guitar playing that you described.
You lost me a few seconds in with "corporate friendly indie pop". That Chairlift album was important for me !!! a breath of fresh air at the time. Anyway, she is such a talented, dynamic gem of an artist. Bless.
Nice!! Just curious but at the time what made it so fresh?
lol it literally is. can still enjoy it though
Yeah, what a weird way to describe Chairlift. Nothing about them was corporate aside from the Apple commercial that they didn't exactly lobby for. I saw them on every tour from their first album onward, and they didn't exactly draw massive crowds.
big agree. chameleon closet?? corporate????
if sidewalk safari is corporate then sign me the fuck up for business school
Caroline Polachek is an underrated genius and I'm happy to see that she's getting some credit
This was good, I'd heard So Hot You're Hurting My Feelings before and it was nice but didn't really catch my attention, but I saw Charli's remix to Welcome To My Island a couple weeks ago and checked the original out and i was just fascinated with everything. I've since then listened to Pang and it's incredible, Hit Me Where It Hurts just captivates me, i had it on repeat for a while last week it's so good. I'm so excited for the new album, i've been listening to the new tracks basically every morning and they're all so good. Also the horse girl thing does explain her aesthetics a bit lol, a lot of leather indeed hahaha
Also if you could link the interviews and the performances you use in the video and all that before or after the videogame soundtracks it would be helpful, i've found a couple thru the tags but not everything
thanks so much for your input! I will def consider linking interviews thats a good idea
She’s highly creative and I lover her style the way she uses her voice to as it’s own instrument and melody reminds me so much of the late Dolores O’Riordan
Dolores is one of her influences ✨
i wish i could go back to the first time i heard the chorus of so hot you're hurting my feelings on tiktok in 2021. it was my absolute first experience with caroline's voice and music and i've been obsessed ever since, i get chills and tingles EVERY SINGLE TIME
also i'm seeing her next week in her concert in berlin, very excited :))))
Finally some good channel talking about really important things! Caroline is Mother, period. She's on another and own level and deserves all the appreciation in the world.
She's EXTREMELY talented and has such a command of her voice that it borders on unreal.
Has anyone stopped to consider how much of Imogen Heap stuff she's been listening to, though? That vocal manner and some of the visuals sometimes seem like lifted straight off "Speak for Yourself" or "Ellipse" : )
moth album is so underrated i discovered that album in high school and it permanently altered my brain chemistry
Hell yes it is!
Caroline, yassification and persona music. I’m sold!
I’d love an expanded more in depth version of this video, but this is a nice summarized gist of everything!
Thanks!! What did you want me to go more in depth on?
Chairlift started like any other Myspace band back in the day, they co-rented their apartment AND studio with MGMT. it took some time for the Bruised-iPod ad. Then, aaron leaving the band, her working with Jorge Elbrecht in tons of collaborations while working on Something… and then the Ramona Lisa project which was extremely important and spearheaded her solo career :) about Pang, she starred touring the second the album came out so from October to Feb 2020 she was able to tour a bit (and even perform some new material), snd then during the pandemic she did a LOT of virtual shows where she performed one time covers and stripped down versions of her music@@beantherapy
But the video is great! I loved it and subscribed ❤️

Was so thrown by the Stardew music. Great video!
I love your use of VGM here. There's a definitely a video game vibe in Caroline's music, some of it feels like it would fit perfectly in 00's Final Fantasy.
I got to experience her live for the first time on the Dua Lipa tour and she was amazing. I first heard her on Charlie xcx new shapes and loved her voice/writing
Great video broski seeing her in a week. Can’t wait

Thank you for this very interesting video. Yes, "Desire, I Want to Turn into You" has been out for one week and, well, I'm pretty much obsessed now. It's a crown of shiny pearls. It's being acclaimed by music critics and rightly so.
The new album is great.
But for me, the real standout is the song Billions.....which she released this time last year, and is the last track on Desire.
Billions is SO good. It's an alt pop masterpiece....period.
it is.
i got bullied in the 7th grade for listening to chairlift, and now every mf is listening to caroline polachek.

I went to see her live yesterday in Paris and this video showed up on my feed. Her voice is just otherworldly, it was a fantastic experience. Also, she spoke french throughout which for the french people was an amazing surprise haha it was cool to see their enthusiasm
less than a week away from the new album, cant wait
I met her at Thalia hall after waiting for her after the concert and she took photos with me and was the sweetest. Her energy was truly indescribable and comforting.
I just don't agree with you calling the first album corporate-friendly. Besides the two singles, this is the most left field sound they probably ever had.
Ya probably not the best description, maybe I just dont enjoy it lol
100% agree, there are some really experimental songs from Chairlift (and I love it).
If anything I find her solo sound more corporate friendly… since it reminds me of 90s and 2000s pop…
I am posting because a particular final reason and I am glad to say I loved this video cos this is what I have been talking to ppl about pop music, I love and follow her since I saw that trippy video clip around 15 years ago.
It feels weird but joyful that the world is loving and recognizing her now (finally). Personally, my fav work at this time is Arcadia, it's incredible and so inspirational for me the atmospheres, record "techniques", choreos for every single track, and the references she took to do that Album.
When I heard Pang I knew that would become the sound of a big part of pop actually music because was a step beyond mainstream hand in hand with hyperpop.
My initial thoughts about D,IWtTIY are that she is positioning herself as an avant garde pop star but for me is not as organic as Pang.
My love for Grimes is back and forth and I never had an interesting in Dido but how they gather their auras on Fly To You is just another proof of how Caroline is a Colab and producer master.
So the final reason for this post is while hearing D,IWtTIY it reminds me in some moments of Persona's marvelous OST, and ... There you are using it at the end of this video.
I am more than glad we share more than particular tastes.
Nice work, zude. Great overview and encapsulation of her career up to this point.
thankssss :))
thanks i hate it
truly thorough exploration, and goddamn: you better get some recompense for this promo. i'm gonna find the kexp vid now
That CEP album? I had no idea about it and it's excellent!
I was just at her live show last night where she debut her entire new album and I can say it does not dissapoint!!!!!!
enjoyed the video but was expecting it to be about the yassification of caroline polachek
Caroline is probably the most creative living pop artist right now, maybe the modern day Bowie of our times & only recently blossoming. It's amazing.
LMFAOOOOO BE SO FR... U DID NOT COMPARE CAROLINE TO BOWIE...
bruh you gotta be kidding with this comparison
I absolutely love Caroline but this comparison is wild and highly false

Her Pang tour only got cut like 4 shows short! She was touring in short segments with breaks in between
the geese video cameo at the end LOL loved this
hahaha yes legendary video
PEAK CAROLINE EXPERIENCE
Enjoyed nearly everything about this video except for the extremely oversized VGM for the background music. Surely there are some indie chill beat folks that would let you use their music.
She’s honestly incredible, I can’t even put it into words. Wayyy too underrated, she’s the future of indie/ electronic pop music, it’s awesome how she kept reinventing herself, yet no one seem to rly know her
The Sonic Mega Collection Plus theme???? I love you

I saw Chairlift open for Yeasayer in Toronto in the winter of 2007, what a great night. There may or may not have been acid involved.
Her music is so gripping! Very grateful for this vid. Very interesting!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I first heard of Caroline when “So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings” was trending on TikTok and she was also recommended on Spotify. She was my #1 on Spotify Wrapped last year because I had Pang on repeat. Her voice is incredibly captivating and she never fails to amaze me. I can’t wait to see what she does next because Desire, I Want to Turn Into You is everything I wished for 😊
i was not ready for the persona music nearing the end
What is this wonderful typeface you use throughout the video?

She's at the top of my concert bucket list, such an incredible talent!
i had the luck of catching the first show from the handful of 2019 gigs and it was so brilliant. small, intimate venue and incredible performance. ag cook dj'd after. strangely, beforehand was one of the weirder most stressful experiences i've had in an uber with a total rager driver so it was a huge contrast to the tea light lit ethereal show after.
I've been listening to Caroline since Chairlift, "Bruises" was a cute song but I really loved "I belong in your arms" and "Amanaemonesia" I also produce and have a musical ear so I can only hope other not mainstream artists will become appreciated at some point.
Did you use Summertime Stardew Valley music for the first part of the video? Lol

Never mentioned anything like/about your title in the video? Enjoyed the content, but what has the title got to do with anything you said?
I thought it sounded good, most people understood what it meant
I came here to learn what yassification means... I still have no idea but I'm really glad that the live video where Caroline sings a duo with a goose in a public park was included. Definitely was a peak moment in her creative career.

Of the two, I don't know which warrants a bigger reaction on my part
A. Discovering that Grimes had chosen and had been using the exact same avatar as me at the same time last year. Morgana (who WE both know is NOT A CAT!)
Or
B. Despite saving the track " Backwards and Upwards " into my "Likes" playlist on my premium youtube music subscription months & months back...had NO FREAKIN CLUE this was Carolina! (frankly I'm a little disappointed in myself)
