@Darkobssession pretty sure you misunderstood me. Of course it's cool he makes money and all that. I'm a capitalist and support that completely. I was joking about how he's prone to dropping things, and those cards he was holding nonchalantly are easily worth 20-50k lol. I'd be so nervous I wouldn't even touch them

If Nvidia really want this multi gpu for gaming thing to work, they need to come up with a communication protocol between cards that gaming companies don’t have to optimize their games for. Essentially (which is what it seems NVlink does), they need a protocol that games see as one massive card, instead of 2 joined ones.
Otherwise, multigpu setups will never really take off the way they seem to be expecting because it will always be a trade off between stability, performance, and compatibility.
It's already here. It's called DX12 and Vulcan. It's up to developers to code Mgpu in.
wccftech.com/vulkan-radeon-mgpu-performance-in-strange-brigade-tested/
@@bobbavet "It's up to developers to code it in"
That's the issue though, it's extra work and testing for a uncommon setup
@@bobbavet this and the above.
Most games don't even implement DX12/Vulcan due to extra costs that don't really bring much to a majority of your player base. Just not worth.
Unity is/has implemented Vulcan but it takes time to proliferate, games take years to develop.
For most situations that multi gpu set up in gaming is just not worthwhile.
When I say "coding" I am not talking something long or time consuming as sli or xfire profile. I was of the understanding that Mgpu is an instruction set within dx12/vulkan api. Set a few parameters, then code "enable Mgpu". And yes it would be worth it if you can place smaller gpus on single die. If AMD were to make the APU in the new xbox/PS a dual navi via infinity fabric, dx12/vulkan api implementation would become prolific. Thats one console port I would look forward too.
Gears of war 4 is DX12 Mgpu. Interested in seeing that benched single/sli/mgpu.

and yet they failed to mention on the new RTX cards SLi is only available on 2080 series ... ouch
Mostly because in the end you'd end up paying for what you'd get out of a single 2080 Ti. So, it didn't make sense to allow the 2070 to do the same.
@BIG TIME
orly ... back in the day a argument like that would be mocked ... if you could buy a two cheap cards and with sli get the same performance as the highest card for 8x less then you would go Sli ... and that was the point of sli , so people bought two cheap XXX60 cards ... till Nvidia got greedy and went Intel retarded ways of locking things to specific cards in a set series ... first by locking sli only to the XX70 cards ... then by skyrocketing prices for GPUs , blaming miners for that price influx (BS my ass)... Nvida wanted to make PC gaming on Highest settings a privilege ... a thing that a normal 11h working common folk would not be able to afford ... pushing more people into the console territory ... When a common joe, goes to a store and sees a price 700$ to 1000$ for a card (not including other parts you need for a PC) to be able to game in 4K ... and then sees for $499 consoles that can go to 4K and have the same graphics ... guess what he will pick ...
The amount of people going SLI nowadays is becoming less and less. A few years ago you'd do what hfric mentioned, but with devs toning down SLI support, its just usually not worth the cost for most people. Not to mention all the weird stuff that comes with SLI and Crossfire.
But who makes multi GPU setup using xx70 or lower. You either make it from top of the top or don't make it at all. More powerful single GPU will give you steady frametimes even though average fps may be slightly lower compared to mGPU setup made from less powerful cards. Not to mention that SLI can be utilised fully only on HEDT platform, since regular i7s and ryzens don't support enough PCI express lines, so you'll be always limited to x16 on one card and x8 on another. You really have to go balls deep with multi GPU to use it's full potential.
only rich people are allowed to have sli because it's for the burger gees
This may just be a fantasy, but I really hope they manage to get NVlink working in every game without developer modification. Even if the scaling is only 50% in non-optimized games, it would be really cool to see that technology.
Hard to do, the latency between the cards would be a mess to manage. It'll probably be worse than a single GPU, except at extreme resolutions (lots of time doing the same thing, which means less time lost dividing and sending the commands)
I don’t think sli/nvlink or crossfire is way. It still heavily relies on running on master and slave turning it into a single gpu. It’s better to get the drivers to run in parallel improving the code in the dx12 multi gpu feature so instead both GPUs would run like how multi socket cpus run. Maybe amd will pull of an infinity fabric on their upcoming GPUs and fix a majority of latency issues on multi gpu setups
3DFX already did it and it worked well.
@@MJ-uk6lu Yes, but that was 20 years ago, and the technologies changed SO MUCH that it's just not possible nowadays. Back then, you could've used another computer's GPU through Ethernet without too much overhead. There are technologies to do this even to this day, and let me tell you, it's hooooorible now, because latency went from "not an issue" to "one of the biggest performance factor".

For future RTX cards, I suggest also looking towards Octane Bench from Octane Render. Octane 4 (and future versions optimised for RTX) isn't out yet, but even so, they are great benchmarks for raytracing. Octane 4 will have a free tier that you can use for 2 GPUs and is used very often for 3D renders. I'm sure there's a pro viz audience that's interested in that numbers.
2018: Nvidia finally abolished slavery.
Nvidia IS slavery, so as long as they exist slavery will be around with proprietary and consumer-adverse products. Their GPUs are great, the total rest is garbage.
... IT'S A JOKE
No they didn't. They're still doing SLI over NVLink, so it's still the same master-slave thing but with more bandwidth.
Some people enjoy being 'slaves' in the relationship.
I heard Underground Railroad Simulator ‘19 is going to have RTX support
I think restricting the capability on RTX/GTX series cards NVlink capability to be a sli connection is a terrible decision, SLI and Crossfire have many issues when it comes to using them for gamming and NVlink really showed to be a solution on how the cards talk to each other effeciently. They are opening the door for AMD or even Intel here pretty soon to create a NVlink type solution for thier upcomming cards on the consumer and professional level to make it easier for developers to program fro or even make thier driver sets able to limit how much a game dev has to program for multi gpu systems. Right now for SLI and Crossfire are not price effecient as bying a second card and incorperating it will net you at best 50% additonal performance at best, and at worst make thinsg run worse then running a single card. The bandwidth and latancy capabilities of NVlink are a absolute game changer to multi card systems and Nvidia is holding it back on the non professional products.
Don't really get it either, nvidia makes more money if you buy twice as many cards, but there is less incentive to do that with poor sli performance. With each generation nvidia pushes sli or nvlink or whatever to the upper end of their product line. I feel like they would make a shitload if say they had full fledged nvlink on their cards, and they sold rtx 2070 dual kits with the bridge, for $850 or $900, they couldn't keep them on the shelves they would sell so fast. Of course then it woudl challenge their flagship products for sales. I dunno, maybe after doing the math they realized that from a business standpoint, sli is bad for sales of their higher tier cards and that is less profitable, i'm not sure. I'm inclined to believe the profit margin on the higher end cars is higher, so maybe it doesn't make sense to challenge that. Woudl be interesting to see a full write up on the business side of sli vs single card sales.
@Lucy In Disguise My thought is that consumers would upgrade by adding a second video card. Each generation of card is usually not that much incentive to upgrade. If i just spend $400 on a graphics card, i'm not likely to turn around and buy another $400 graphics card a year later when the next gen card comes out. However a year later I might choose to purchase another one of the cards i already have to up my performance if it truly translated into increased performance. The modular nature of pc hardware and ability to upgrade is one strong selling point vs consoles. So it doesn't make sense when companies kill upgrade paths like making a new socket every generation of cpu, or taking away sli, or giving the consumer market a watered down version of dual graphics card performance. Margins are high on older graphics cards because they're not investing any new R&D into them, and usually the manufacturing processes get cheaper the longer they go. They could sell a 2 or 3 year old card potentially for cheaper than it was new, and still make a larger profit. Users would be drawn to newer cards by features rather than sheer number crunching capability.
Nah...both technologies from team red and green a cash grab nowadays. They are not stupid to allow customers to get double performance by bying for example two being used mid-range cards for dirty cheap when they in reality want you to buy his new cards.
7:33 YEAH! I've got a huge one! Wait...

Thank goodness he hasn't tried for the RX 470 multi-GPU (I've got the 2x record in TimeSpy, 3x and 4x later when Threadripper gets here, my Ryzen 1700 can only fit 2 cards, lol!). But seriously, he needs to keep away from the AMD cards, I won't be able to set the all time Radeon record if he tries out team red! No amount of BIOS modded Fury cards could win against him!
Still expensive af...
@HimKioo ikr, i love budget cards. I've had my 1050ti for almost a year and it's working perfectly on all the games I play and It was so easy to install
@HimKioo, This is a VERY naive perspective. While you are 100% correct about this being a flat out STUPID price to pay to (only) play games, some people do things with their hardware OTHER than browse their Steam library. I've had a 1080ti since December, and it's played
@HimKioo You misread. I do not mine, or otherwise participate in the crypto market. I'm a software developer, so yes, I do produce things and (subjectively) contribute to pushing tech forward. That's how I justified the cost ($800, at the time) of my 1080ti. It paid for itself rather quickly without having to worry about inflating hash rates or the market imploding.
Remember, Linus uses games to benchmark performance for basically two reasons, games are a pretty good consumer GPU benchmark, and that's what Mos of his audience cares about. But gaming benchmarks can be applied to more than playing games. These kinds of videos don't highlight the gv100's gaming performance, gaming just puts these performance differences in a context (most of) his audience understands/cares about.
It's not a recommendation to run out and blow $30k on hardware to play fortnite. And it's not saying a 4k/ultra setup is the best way to play your stuff.

If they do, be prepared to pay 3x (or more) the price the hardware is worth. Not even kidding. My colleague bought an apple laptop with lower specs then my windows laptop for €3500 while mine cost me €1000.

Why Do You Capitalize Every Word Except For "than"?
I was really confused there for a second, seeing Linus in a yt ad on his own video.
I know this is old... But a nice set of benchmarks can be found on the samples that come with the cuda toolkit. Stuff like the BiCGStab solver and Monte Carlo sims can really push those babies to full power, and they are all equipped with metrics analysis tools. They are also open, so you can modify parameters to have a more intensive problem if the times are too quick. On Linux, the samples are in /usr/cuida/samples, and have a makefile to compile everything. I don't remember the windows path, but they come with a VS file that does the same thing.
I see several people upset about the lingo used in this video and I don't understand why? Master and slave is a very ubiquitous term. We even use it a lot in the audio field. One "unit" has to be put in charge and the rest "sync" to that one. It's a perfect way to describe it.

"That's alot of fans and heatsinks"
I've been building & fixing PCs for years, and one thing that's always annoyed the crap out of me is how seemingly fragile video cards are. Not a single component has failed on me more times than video cards and, other than a scant few of them, it can't be explained as to why. I've had cards die when I remove them, when I install them, when I've moved them around, when I've cleaned them, or they arrive DOA, etc etc. Once, had a video card sitting on a table as I was using a different PC and I just spun the fan with my finger as a distraction. The fan died. Then there was the XFX GeForce 7950 AGP card with the faulty cooling shroud that prevented the fan from spinning and cooked the card (which lead to the worst customer service I've ever experienced, thanks XFX!). The latest death was a Radeon HD 7970. It was running perfectly and I shut down my PC for the night, only to wake up the next day & my PC wouldn't even POST. After some diagnosing, the card was dead. No reason, no explanation, not even a hint that there might be an impending problem, just... dead.
So when I see Linus handling a video card like it's a cheap toy or waving it around like a conductor's baton, I can't help but yell 'STOP DOING THAT!!!' at the video involuntarily. I keep wanting to reach through my screen and slap Linus every time he starts flailing about with a multi-thousand $$$ card in his hand. It's probably akin to a big-time car enthusiast seeing a 16-year old driving around in a Ferrari F50, you just have this urge to yank the punk out of the car and then pimp-slap the parents for handing them the keys in the first place.
Then again, spending ~$500 on just one card is a huge investment for me, while Linus gets shipped cards that cost 10 times that probably every other day. Also, I have a spare 7970 and I just got a 7990 super cheap off Ebay last week, so no big deal. But still! Watching you flail about with those cards to me is like watching a death-defying circus act.
Oh yeah, don't you have a bad habit of dropping things, too? :)
Why did they have to cripple down NVlink for consumer cards
Why do we need sli/nv bridges?
How is crossfire working without any connection other than pcie bus?
Different architectures, better drivers. Plus AMD isn't trying to force everyone to buy professional cards for multi-gpu rendering. NVIDIA's professional are really expensive(4 digits), while their GPU's power is comparable with an 1080 ti with a better memory bandwidth.. If an regular card could have the same multi-gpu performance as a professional card, no one would waste their money on the latter. I mean.. what would you preffer for the same amount of money, one GP100 16GB or 6 x 1080 TI in NVLink SLI with a total of 66GB of memory?
They probably have a lot less bandwidth, and more complicated PCI-E busses to allow gpus to talk by themselves.
Now it's possible for a big dummy to install their graphics card upside down! Hahahaha
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAA
very sure that this'll ACTUALLY happen.... xD
@@spiral83 Good thing The Verge didn't wait to do their PC build video...
I actually have a 2080 and laughed a bit at this because when I was installing mine I wondered why they had 2 PCI express slots on the card, I then kicked my brain for being dumb for a moment and went ahh that must be fire SLi
"One functions as the master in the relationship, the other as slave. Or if multilple cards, slaves''
Ah, finally. You're speaking my language. *Dusts off his flogger*
Noob
Go play mario
Oh we got a badass over here. Cringe.
Ive asked myself this for a few years now. What happens when you put an Sli bridge between 2 pc's?
Holzwurm _HD literally nothing
0:34 - everyone else’s stop at ten, but ours go to eleven. Just to get that extra little push.
But why 11? Why not just make the 10 louder?
The “Master” “Slave” term has been replaced in python recently to “parent” “worker”
I take it media matters had a hand in that...
Why am I watching this, let alone SLI I don't even own a dedicated GPU as of now
(sobs at broken GPU)
go play fortnight then and continue your stupidity rampage.
Imagine ray tracing in sli.....dream come true!!!!
South Bronx, NY one gpu
30fps1080p
Two gpu
Yeaaah 1080p60fps
1440p!
For only 2600$ u can get raytraced 60 fps 1080p wow worth
dream stupid
Seriously though, one GPU devoted to ray tracing & the other running the rest of the game, could be pretty cool!
We also built a system with two 1080Ti SLI , in some projects - the increase is directly noticeable , in some minimal , somewhere - the second card is idle ( in most cases ) . But rarely seen less than 60 fps in 4K , where the restriction has been lifted - all 72 (the monitor is capable of producing ) , and so the SLI is more for enthusiasts than for life , here is our oven : ua-cam.com/video/jHMNPI2kjh8/v-deo.html
Config :
i7 7700K to 4.5 GHz
Asus z270ws
Corsair Dominator Platinum 32 Gb 3200 Mhz ( 4 sticks of 8 )
2 EVGA 1080Ti SLI
BeQuiet 850W
2 years later, and it's completely dead...
Dude I would like to know the difference between 2 SLI RTX 2060s vs 1 RTX 2080, please.
2 sli rtx 2060s are even worse than a single rtx 2060 because the card doesn't support nv link, and it won't work together
Yeah not even 2 RTX 2080 can beat a 2080 usually, just due to the way it's taken advantage of. Devs haven't fully utilized multi-gpus for gaming, and for many other things, you'd be far better just running a single card, like a 2080ti or something if you're strictly worried about most performance. I mean yeah 2 2060s is still cheaper than a 2080, but if you're willing to try and make 2 2060s work, just spend the extra and get the better card from the start.
Oh! someone has 11 graphics cards at once
If really can I get one
You know some data centers have hundreds of GPUs right?
@@awesomestuff9715 Why the fuck would one need hundreds of graphic cards? I mean mayne cpu
I love this, it makes me smile when you want to buy two cards
1:03 Now that's a lotta hardware
2:19 Missed chance for a Jabba the Hutt reference
