Zealandia | Earth's Forgotten eighth continent

- This is Zealandia - Earth's forgotten an submerged eighth continent. Scientists had long predicted the existence of this bonus southern landmass that remained missing for 375 years, largely because it’s submerged 1-2km under water. An international team of geologists and seismologists have this submerged piece of land and created a new map of Zealandia.
Approximately 83 million years ago, the supercontinent Gondwana was pulled apart resulting in the beginning of the present-day continents. It also resulted in the creation of Zealandia. It is 94% under the sea and the remaining 6% is what we identify as New Zealand and neighboring islands.
In a new effort, the research team sought to refine the existing maps of Zealandia by studying a collection of rocks and sediment samples brought up from the ocean bed. The oldest were the pebbles dating back to Early Cretaceous (around 130-110 million years old), followed by sandstones from Late Cretaceous (around 95 million years old) and relatively young basalts from the Eocene (around 40 million years old). Study of rock patterns showed geologic patterns in West Antarctica that hinted at the possibility of a subduction zone near the Campbell Plateau off the west coast of New Zealand. The newly refined map shows other major geological features as well.
A 2021 study suggested that Zealandia is 1 billion years old, about twice as old as geologists previously thought. By approximately 23 million years ago, the landmass may have completely submerged.
Zealandia is also substantially larger than the Arabian Peninsula, the world’s largest peninsula, and the Indian subcontinent. Due to various geological considerations, such as crustal thickness and density, some geologists from New Zealand and Australia have concluded that Zealandia fulfills all the requirements to be considered as a continent rather than a microcontinent.
Down to Earth is Science and Environment fortnightly published by the Society for Environmental Communication, New Delhi. We publish news and analysis on issues that deal with sustainable development, which we scan through the eyes of science and environment.
Little does the human population know that behind the ice walls when they are completely melted is 20+ more continents we’ve never seen or heard of before
Good luck with that.
I am curious. Did someone go behind them walls, went to each continent then came back. What are the sources? And why would someone believe his claim?
So... The Middle Earth... did exist?
yes.
Yeeees
Yes the 4 nations lived together in harmony. Every land we see now today and the ones that have submerged into the ocean are all connected, you guys we are the blueprint of this earth, remember that. ❤🌅✨
Highlights
🌏 Zealandia is an underwater continent, largely submerged 1 to 2 kilometers underwater.
🗺 A recent study by geologists and seismologists refined maps of Zealandia, revealing its geological history.
🌊 Zealandia is 94% underwater, and only 6% is above sea level, including New Zealand and nearby islands.
📅 New research suggests Zealandia is around 1 billion years old, much older than previously believed.
🌍 Zealandia's size surpasses the Arabian Peninsula and the Indian subcontinent due to geological factors.
🌴 Some geologists argue that Zealandia should be considered a continent rather than a micro continent.
Why am I watching this at 12 am the music is giving me the chills
So why do we consider it a continent if it lies 2km below sea level? Aren’t there other land masses way below sea level?
it is because 6% of it is above water and is called New Zealand
because it’s made up of continental crust, not ocean crust
Actually Zealandia is not the only land that submurged and certainly wont be the last one
Have you seen the movie called “Waterworld” starring Kevin Costner? , and another great movie he was also in called “Dances With Wolves”
Waterworld is a good movie to check out you’ll thank me later. 😌❤🗿 Let me know how you think of movie ! ! ! 🫡✨:D
Haha I live on long island new york . We will be one of the first to bite the bullet sinking into the sea . They say in my nieces lifetime that fire island (right below us and big vacation /summer hangout spot ) will be completely gone
So would we now consider new zealand as part of the 8th continent?... rather than being in Australia or Oceania?
Not 8th continent
It will be 9th I think because 8th is eurasia, maybe I'm wrong
I mean...it technically **is** but Oceania is just the part of the world that we associate with countries like Australia and New Zealand. Much like the Mediterranean encompasses multiple continents, it's not anything to fuss about.
Actually the Bible talks about this, "You have sunk to the ocean depths. Your goods and all who work for you have vanished with you in the sea" "I will cover you with the waters of the ocean depths. I will send you down to the world of the Dead to join the people who lived in ancient times"
Ezekiel 27
@@GodSoLoved.Yeshuaim definitely gonna read this soon to learn more
"Continent" seems a bit vague. Why for example are Europe and Asia classed as different continents? From the geological viewpoint I presume this discovery means that New Zealand is part of a large _tectonic plate_ separate from the one that supports Australia. ChatGPT has just given me a list of _eleven_ "major" tectonic plates (ChatGPT's data base is not up to date; Zealandia would increase that estimate to twelve...):
Pacific Plate
North American Plate
South American Plate
Eurasian Plate
African Plate
Antarctic Plate
Indo-Australian Plate
Cocos Plate
Nazca Plate
Arabian Plate
Philippine Sea Plate
The geological viewpoint is only one of several factors for what qualifies as a continent.
Europe and Asia have such distinctive geopolitical and historical features that they have long been known as separate continents.
India has geological merit for being classified as a continent but it importantly lacks the accepted size of a continental landmass, and an official, costly relabeling of a single nation as its own continent now would break people’s brains.
Zealandia probably would pass as its own continent for being two thirds the size of Australia, in combination with it being a distinct landmass.
So Australia is in between 2 sunken continents. Zealandia and Mauritia. Scary to think about. Almost like the planet is saying "you're next".
That is nonsense, sunken one to two km that is just sea surface. Using that logic u will find many continents
The world is always shrinking little by little and the land masses that will continue to do so are decreasing every moment, this is a fact of science.
i predict that when Humanity is on its way to mastering Terraforming, Zealandia would be raised!
finally, old zealand
So is it possible to make a Netherlands method to rise it up again? More land, more space. More wildlife.
how the hell did we miss this shi for 6 thousand years plus
Because looking under 1-2Km water is hard?
Zealandia new New continent very surprised.
The world is always shrinking little by little and the land masses that will continue to do so are decreasing every moment, this is a fact of science.❤❤
but only 1/5th of NZ is useful for shops and amenities a bit like Scotland
Someone said Lemuria used to exist in the southern pacific. Now there's proof.
Are Gondwana and Pangia same?
No,panthalassa is a waterbody and pangea is a super continent which was divided into angara or laurasia and Gondwana land
Gondwanaland existed before Pangea.
Gondwana- Panthalasa
Pangea- tethys seas
Gondwana contained the southern continents-South America, Africa, India, Madagascar, Australia, and Antarctica. It had become a coherent supercontinent at ~500 Ma and accreted to Pangea largely as a single block. Laurasia consisted of the northern continents-North America, Greenland, Europe, and northern Asia.
Country of Armius Blue Zealandia❤
Which means it’s a rich research area..❤ God I love Science
It wasn’t forgotten, it was swallowed up by the sea.
It was forgotten, because we only rediscovered its existence recently.
Actually the Bible talks about this, "You have sunk to the ocean depths. Your goods and all who work for you have vanished with you in the sea" "I will cover you with the waters of the ocean depths. I will send you down to the world of the Dead to join the people who lived in ancient times"
Ezekiel 27
Wow quite interesting.🤨
80 million years ago... Who was there? How did you know it's 80 millions ago? Which technology did you use to exactly predict ot was 80 millions ago?
A student of part time online study. 😂😂
Zealandia is estimated to be around 80 million years old primarily based on geological evidence, including the age of the rocks and the processes that have shaped the region. This estimation is derived from methods like radiometric dating of rocks and the analysis of plate tectonics. Over time, scientists have pieced together the geological history of Zealandia to arrive at this approximate age.
Can scientists be wrong?
Wouldn't have it just been called Zealand? because we have New Zealand
Basketball League ❤Zalendia

✓ soon? (Northern)😂
Asia Africa North America South America Antarctica Europe Oceania and Zealandia
So it proves they dont know how earth looks from space nor from iart otherwise they wouldnt fount it now
They found it by looking at Earth through space, nobody expected there to be an 8th continent, so nobody was looking for it, hints why we just found it.
If we had a new piece of land kiss the world good bye because greedy people will fight over it
Seems there is no kumari kandam then .. all lies are slowly getting revealed
God has also hidden this place under the sea so that the Europeans will not say tomorrow that this is our country.
How's Pakistan doing bro??
They only claim America and Europe not sure of anywhere else
They should just call it Zamunda.
...and America again, want to claim it
That’s crazy. I’d think it’d be the Brits. Especially considering that throughout history, there’s only been 22 countries out of 195 that Britain hasn’t invaded. So it’d seem reasonable that Britain would want to claim the land as they seem to love land as much as America loves oil
@@Mster_J British lost their invading powers after world war 2.
United Kingdom of the Original American Indian Asians ❤
New Zealand Malaysians
Why is this of any importance ,there are people dying and starving and we'restudying something of little consequence
We already have large groups of people that work on that stuff. It’s called specialization.
It’s not like everyone in the world is studying Zealandia.
Ever heard of large scale humanitarian organizations and efforts? We can do multiple things at once you know
Beleriand would be a more appropriate name.
UPSC ka syllabus bdha dia
Humko zinda mt chhodo s.......😤😢
How is that relevant!
Earth continents are constantly on the move,
By that logic at some point in history there were many other parts on earth which were above water and now are not!
The whole earth was covered in water, God separated the waters, land emerged.
Jesus is alive ✝️🥳
Scientists agree it started with water, they simply don't know where it arrived from.
God is the creator, your not a descendant of a worm who turned into a fish who then decided to crawl out ...
