Dutch explorer Abel Tasman (1642) named what is now New Zealand "Staten Landt" in honour of the Dutch parliament. By 1657 the islands appear on Dutch maps as Nova Zeelandia, after the Dutch province. Zealandia was the female personification of New Zealand and appears on stamps from 1901 onward. She features on New Zealand's Coat of Arms (1956) and is based on actress Grace Kelly.

There's good reason to not put antarctica as a continent either, since its land is actually a bunch of islands surrounded by ice on top of ocean. It's an archipelago, it has more similarities to zeelandia as it was mentioned in the video.
@@glenbe4026 there may be a few rare versions that have it. but I don't see why they consistently leave it off. They have room to put madagascar on the board but not new zealand?
Only Americans really refer to it as a continent, most people just say it's Oceania, which itself is divided in to regions. Australia, Melanasia, Micronesia, Polynesia and Australasia.
That is literally incontinent (as not continuing on from one place to another. We obviously only count the dry spaces people can live on as contigeous area, not the ocean floors like a certain convicted fellon loves to do.)
If we're going to do it scientifically, we need a definition of "continent" that includes both "continental crust" and also "active tectonic boundaries." Two areas of continental crust can't be the same continent if they have an active tectonic boundary between them - so that separates Africa from Eurasia, and also India from Eurasia - and they can't be separate continents if they don't have either a tectonic boundary between them, or at minimum an area of ocean floor crust that implies they used to have a tectonic boundary between them. This latter proviso allows India and Australia to be deemed separate continents, and also Australia and North Zealandia - because these three sections of continental crust have no current active tectonic boundary between them, but they do have sections of ocean floor crust between them. South Zealandia, unfortunately, is on the Pacific plate, with a very active tectonic boundary between it and the Indo-Australian plate, so it can't be counted as part of the same continent as North Zealandia. I'm inclined to the opinion that if an area of continental crust fulfils these requirements to be a continent, it's a continent, whether micro, mega, or in between. So all the small but distinct pieces of continental crust bumping around on their own plates would be categorised as micro-continents, but this doesn't deny they're real continents, the same as a micro-transaction is a real transaction. So although Madagascar doesn't have a currently active tectonic boundary between it and the mainland portion of the East African plate, it does have an expanse of ocean crust separating it the same as Australia and India, and therefore it is a micro-continent.
I was taught in a Canadian school that Australia, New Zealand and the area in-between were the continent of Oceania and that calling Australia continent was incorrect. Never heard of Zealandia before. I would agree to 6 continents based on the theory I was taught. Europe and Asia are definitely 1 continent. The divide is much more ethno-cultural than geological.
I’m in Australia and feel like I was also taught the continent is called Oceania and includes the other nearby countries. Maybe it’s just because we wanted the title of largest island lol.
Panos Kat I never mentioned that China wasn't but throughout the history, US invaded lot of countries and stole their resources. China is just the lesser evil of the two.

@@IceSpoon well, ocean wise I can tell you there are at least 3. Atlantic, Pacific and the Indian one. That is because these bodies of water won't mix themselves up. Atlantic and Pacific Ocean have different kinds of water that won't mix, wich is the reason for them not being the same ocean :D I think the same goes for all the other oceanz
Actually, Europe and Asia are divided by the Mediterranean, Black & Caspian Seas, the Caucasus Mountains, and the Ural Mountains. There are actually several mountain ranges dotted throughout Eurasia, such as the Caucasus Mountains Ural Mountains, Zagros Mountains, Teon Chong Mountains (sorry, I’m blanking out on the actual spelling because it’s Chinese), and the Himalayas among others. Heck, even Mt. Sini almost divides Asia from Africa (before the Suez Canal was dug of course).
@@daltonmiller5590 Well, you can also divide Europe in west and east/south north for political reasons and that doesn't make authomatically 2 new continents
@@hernanmarcos9177 That's not the same. Europe is much smaller than the Americas. North America and South America _separately_ are both larger than Europe. If you separated Europe, each _new continent_ would be smaller than several individual countries. It's not a fair comparison.
Zealandia: Earth’s Hidden Continent “You can copy my homework, just change it a little bit so it doesn’t look the same.” Zealandia: Earth’s 8th Continent
The Pluto thing is a nonsense. They didn't want to mess up the text books by admitting that there could be lots more planets out there that we haven't discovered yet, so they invented this "must clear its orbital path" in blatant defiance of the fact that rogue planets aren't even in orbit around anything but they're still planets. If it's big enough for its mass have formed it into a spheroid, but not so big as to become a star, and if it's not in orbit around a planet, then it is a planet. Planetary bodies that are in orbit around a planet are moons. There is also no definition of continent other than arbitrary size that makes Europe a continent but not India. Europe and Asia stopped moving relative to each other a long time ago. India is still ploughing north and pushing up the Himalayas. And since none of the maps can agree on where the Indian plate stops and the Australian plate starts because currently they're moving in the same direction at the same speed and there really isn't a defined rift line between them, it's arguable that India and Australia are the same plate - in which case the Indo-Australian plate is well big enough to be called a continent.

@Sefer Bolat Maybe not because of the insane pressure of the deep sea. Likely, living in areas where the sea is less deep will be easier then areas where the sea is deeper. Thus underwater "habitable zones" would still be a thing :)

I love how I live in New Zealand and I’m watching this.

The divide between Europe and Asia is definitely just cultural but I would say Africa is still separate because it's on a different tectonic plate

Between deciding if Zealandia is a continent, and if Pluto is a planet, we humans are really bad at defining naming conventions to identify things.
