Guy Pearce has been my favorite actor since momento because he is a serious actor, doesn't do just any movie, and he's a humble, good guy off screen and that earns extra points for me.
Guy Pearce is an extraordinarily talented actor. A big, big star in the same league as Matt Damon. Come to think of it - someone should be writing a part for him like Jason Bourne - three, four movies - a franchise which Guy would create and come to embody. And what a lovely man he is :-)
Before I saw Iron Man 3, I'd come to know him as Lenny in Memento, so when I first saw him as Aldrich Killian in Iron Man 3 with the long hair, glasses, and cain, I was thrown off so bad and was thinking to myself "OMG, that's Lenny?!"
He doesn't get the attention that he may deserve. Not to take away anything from Brad Pitt but Guy got way more range and could in an alternative universe have gotten as big as Pitt.
But if he got as big as Pitt he would have been type cast like Pitt. Most fans of Pearce like him because he has a preference for independent movies and plays characters that are vastly different from one another.
I would say Pitt is pretty damn type cast. You can always tell its him when he acts and he tends to play in a bunch of hollywood drivel. I'm glad Pearce did not take that route.
Pitt has some decent work among the drivel, Hollywood doesn't always mean shitty shallow films. If you mean typecast by the way "they" chase stars to promote the movie and not to actually fit the character, then I partly agree with you. Assassination of Jesse James is good and Pitt really fit the movie well imo, all of his Fincher movies is great as well. He was good in Tree of Life and Killing Them Softly. With the right director, he's proven to be quite good. But I actually think that most people, even you and me could make great actors, you just have to have a nuanced personality in real life, be aware of your inner world and be comfortable around cameras. Actors in general are if not always overrated. EDIT: Overpraised might be the right word instead of overrated.

Pitt isn't really type casted anymore, that was in his early days more wasn't it? But I guess you have a point anyway.

It takes a lot of dedication though, i would say if you know the right ways to get big and do it better than others..Then it's a talent.
I enjoyed Lockout(unlike a lot of people) But i found Guy purely entertaining and funny in that movie. Just the shit he says.
