    Thanks for this upload. What clean shots kimiko has, never knew how good she was. But to beat Sanchez vicario on clay is tough. She was counter puncher and kept returning....more like wilander in men's game, who drained opponents out with patience and counterpunching.

    The main difference in this match was Arantxa believed she was a champion, whereas Kimiko didn't ever quite realise just how good she was in my opinion.

    • @alexsdb9712
      @alexsdb9712 5 років тому +5

      True, but Kimiko had to believe in herself more than it looked because at the time she was consistently in the top 10. It was simply that Kimiko knew she was facing ASV, and on clay! Arantxa was at a mainstay at the top of the game that era for many many years, an all-surface all-around player, but clay was her best and home court.

      Yeah, frankly the only thing that kept kimiko from a slam was kimiko. She was so much better than she thought of herself, especially considering the level she played at after coming back so late.

    Great moments. Arantxa is the first racket here, very self-confident and impudent in a good sense of the word. 1.5 years will pass and after 10 lost finals, she will be the most unhappy and insecure woman on the tour. Sports are unfair. Arantxa deserved much more victories than she received

    When Arantxa's forehand held up in attacking she can be a beast to play. Not this match - yet Date just never was capable of troubling her increasingly loopy forehand anyway. ASV had to play really badly to let Date snatch a set.
    On the other hand Date had a great record against Martinez, and some power players.

    • @ralphbourgeois5875
      @ralphbourgeois5875 4 роки тому +2

      Date needed to be fed power since her game was all about redirecting power. Sanchez did not give her enough consistent pace to do that at all. She had to attack on her own and create her own pace and she was not consistent without making errors doing that.

    • @peterzhou9267
      @peterzhou9267 4 роки тому +2

      @@ralphbourgeois5875 Sanchez intentionally took pace off here. Sanchez's form in 1995 on clay was not really sharp due to her injury but still beat Date with ease. I suspect Date would have any big breakthrough at all had she not retired in 1996 - despite a big win over Graf and Sanchez each in 1996 her game was too monotonous in pace, and her game was not really complete.

    • @ralphbourgeois5875
      @ralphbourgeois5875 4 роки тому +1

      @@peterzhou9267 Yes I think she made the most of her talent generally. She made the semis of a slam on all 3 major surfaces. Won a decent number of tournaments. Was top 10 several years. Her skills were limited but she was a great competitor. Similar to how Sanchez (higher level of course) also maxed out her talent. I admire players like that as opposed to ones who wasted their talent. Sanchez and Date both went beyond theirs in some ways.
      I think Date also figured her 96 season was about as good as it would get for her, which was one reason she retired. If she was going to make a slam final it would have been this year and it didn't happen.

    • @FlabbyTitmuss
      @FlabbyTitmuss 4 роки тому +2

      @@ralphbourgeois5875 I agree with you both. The general consensus on Date was that she underachieved, but I think she maxed out her talent. Her game was high risk and one paced, and she also had problems keeping her unforced error count respectable versus the better players.

    • @ralphbourgeois5875
      @ralphbourgeois5875 4 роки тому +2

      @@FlabbyTitmuss Yeah I think so too! She had a fine career. She was basically an inconsistent power baseliner who could move and defend reasonably well, with a weak serve.

    To beat vintage Aranxta, especially on clay courts, you need to be patient, consistent, aggressive, physically and mentally strong. Either, you must be Martina Hingis, tactically smart enough.

    A few dumb, uninformed people were in the crowd whistling when Arantxa was hitting defensive shots/moonballs while on the run. When you're severely on the run chasing down the ball as Arantxa was known for, you are just trying to get the ball back in play. The usual result will be a huge looper into the air, so it is not a moonball done with choice. Besides, moonballs are very much a shot in tennis, legal and a part of clay court tennis. They must expect moonballs in their own Roland Garros tournament!

      Alex SDB what was amazing is that every high defensive lob she hit landed just inside the baseline . How on earth she managed that accuracy whilst on the run is incredible . Then those speedy little legs took her back in position to continue the rally .

    Date is actually left handed, but played right handed as there's a stigma in Japan about using your left hand.

    • @kengo7273
      @kengo7273 7 місяців тому

      Maria Sharapore was also left-handed but corrected to right-handed. King George VI of England was also famously corrected to be right-handed. Every culture has similar practices. Date said that her backstroke was hit with only her left arm. She was able to use both arms and had a longer reach on both sides. I think it was that correction that got her to #4 in the world.

    • @th8257
      @th8257 2 місяці тому

      @@kengo7273"corrected" to right handed? There's nothing "correct" about being right handed. It's what is best for you. Interestingly, Rafael Nadal went the other way. He is right handed but plays left handed. Former Belgian player Sabine Applemans also did the same. She is naturally right handed but switched to left handed as a child. Her coach divided the players he was coaching into left and right handed groups and Sabine wanted to stay in the group with one of her left handed friends.

      Question: Did the Church persecute left-handed people during the Middle Ages?
      Answer: Left-handedness has a long history of being considered inferior. Roman culture was superstitious, and left-handedness was associated with bad things. When Christianity became the dominant religion, some things stuck around among the culture. Up through the mid-twentieth century in the United State, some sociologists and psychologists theorized that left-handedness was associated with stubbornness and criminality. In fact, even today some cultures, like Hinduism, consider the left hand to be “dirty.”
