Jealous Guy- John Lennon (Bass and Guitar Cover)

- Jealous Guy was released in 1971 on Lennon's Imagine album, but began as 'Child of Nature' in 1968. The Beatles were in India and their guru Maharishi Mahesh Yogi gave a lecture about 'the son of the mother nature', which also inspired McCartney's song Mother Nature's Son. John changed the lyrics for the Imagine album to reflect his own vulnerabilities
The song was recorded on May 24th (my birthday) 1971 at Lennon's Ascot Studios. The backing track consisted of:
John Lennon: Acoustic Guitar, Whistling, Vocals
Klaus Voormann: Bass
Alan White: Vibraphone
Nicky Hopkins: Piano
John Barham: Harmonium
Jim Keltner: Drums
Mike Pinder: Tambourine
Tom Evans and Joey Molland: Additional Acoustic Guitars
Evans and Molland were from the band Badfinger and are confirmed to have recorded acoustic guitars that day on I Don't Wanna Be a Soldier. But only John's acoustic guitar is really audible on Jealous Guy, so I'm only including his for this cover
John most likely played his 1962 Martin D-28 acoustic on Jealous Guy. He also had his old Gibson J-160e and other guitars during the session. But footage of Harrison picking up a wildly out of tune J160 four days after the Jealous Guy sessions suggests that it wasn't used on this track
Klaus Voormann was an old friend of the Beatles from the Hamburg days and has an impressive resumé. He played bass on All Things Must Pass, Plastic Ono Band, Ringo (1973), Carly Simon's 'You're So Vain', was a member of Manfred Mann, and most famously created the album cover for Revolver. He played bass on all of Imagine and Plastic Ono Band, using his 1962 Fender Precision Bass into an Ampeg B15 amp
I'm using my 1969 Martin 00-18 for John's acoustic guitar. I'm not using a pick, because you can clearly hear John strumming with his fingers on the song. The guitar is being mic'd with a Neumann TLM-103 condenser
For Klaus, I'm using my 1978 Fender Precision Bass into my 1965 Fender Bassman amp. I'm using a piece of foam beneath the strings to mute them, like Klaus is seen doing in session footage. I replaced the pickguard on my bass to make it look more like Klaus's and John Deacon's, two of my bass heroes
Interesting Notes:
0:03 John enters with vocals and guitar
0:17 John plays a walkup on Em on the b-string, ending on an Em6
0:26 John adds his index to the first fret of the b-string on Em, making it a sort of Em/C or Em-minor6th
0:32 Klaus enters on bass for the first chorus
0:33 John plays an Fadd9, the Hard Day's Night chord 1X3213
0:45 John releases the A-string 1st fret, making it an A/Bb
0:51 John releases the D-string 2nd fret, making it an Em7
1:12 Klaus plays an amazing ascending, then descending run on Em, ending on a fast lick. A ghost note on the G-string, B note on the D-string, F-sharp on the A-string to E on the A-string
1:33 John plays a normal D chord instead of D7
2:15 Klaus plays an interesting C-sharp D E D D E lick
3:00 Klaus plays a Low E string note quickly before D
3:04 Klaus plays a beautiful high F-sharp to E on the G-string
3:15 Klaus plays an interesting run over Em: G A G E D C
MY GEAR:
1978 Fender Precision Bass (Fender Reissue '62 P Bass pickups)
1969 Martin 00-18
1965 Fender Bassman Amp

Klaus Voorman a very underrated bass player. He is excellent.
quite literally an all around artist
Commenting on musicians being underrated seems to plague so many YT videos. He’s not underrated, one of the most famous musicians in history chose him to play bass.
@@frqwi27 Indeed, one does not need widespread recognition to be valued.
Bass tone = D A N K B L I S S
Everything was perfect in this song. Piano, bass, strings, &c
That Klaus Voormann bass line, it really makes this song.
A lot of people forget that this was originally called Child of Nature, a song that John intended to include for the White Album. It had different words, and the title was also strangely similar to Paul's Mother Nature's Son.
I thought the original title was “On the Road to Marrakech”. He mentions it and plays it in the Get Back documentary
Amazing!!!! One of my favourite Lennon's songs
One of my favorite John songs. Beautifully played and bass lines are great. Thanks for this one.
John was always my favorite as I've played guitar for 60 years ever since I saw the Beatles in 1965 San Francisco cow palace. I love playing John's beautiful songs and that's one of them. Way to go Sam always love hearing you play. Beautiful 👍
Epic bass. “Nobody told me” has an epic bass line, that would make for a great cover 👏👏👏
Awesome cover, Sam! One of my favorite John solo songs! I'm just a Child of Nature....I mean, I didn't want to hurt you, I'm just a Jealous Guy.....
It would be interesting if you covered Whatever Get You Thru The Night, the bass is beautiful and John plays in a very interesting way.
I love Klauses little fills with that E minor pentatonic. It really lifts the song.
Klaus's part was on point!!!!
I love it❤
Absolutely fantastic as always! Are we going to see an I Don’t Wanna Be A Soldier cover in the near future?
Definitely! That’s a weird one timing wise
nice job as always!
That bass sound. WOW
Omg this is perfect I just started getting back into this album again and you cover this!
Run of the mill take 36 would be awesome to see
Great Video Sam! I love the Bass tone you got here!
Great cover. Never knew that D7 F# to e transition sounds great.
Once again, bringing a buried part into the light. I never clearly heard the guitar in this song before. Thanks! 😊
Was never a fan of Lennon's solo career, but this and "Beautiful Boy" were my favourite Lennon songs. Can't wait to see more bass covers from you
Gotta love johns denim
Beautiful song!
Brilliant work as always Sam! Great song 👍
Terrific! IIRC, Klaus said his playing on this was his personal favorite of all his performances.
A really nice song , it sounds good and straight. I try it today 😊
Awesome Sam!!
Beautiful !!!! Excelente trabajo Sam. Ese bajo es precioso y relajante ❤
Great as usual, Sam! Was that Klaus on bass? It's a great part.
Yes Klaus was really in the zone on this one. He tells a story about how he closed his eyes and just found the groove
Perfect bass tone
Beautiful 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Love the bass! The Beatles history would be vastly different if they never met Klaus.
Oh my love needs a cover too
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day Sam also i am a fan of the fender telecaster as well to be honest ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
Always loved this bass part
Amazing!! Thank you bro!! 🔥🦇
This and Woman are my favorite solo Lennon songs
The sponge is a major tip
YES
Sounds absolutely amazing Sam! What kind of foam do you have under the strings for the bass? And where’d you get it? Keep up the great work man!
Thanks! I think I just got the black foam on Amazon
All Star Cast Performing On The Song
Great cover. Quick question: do you know if there's any guitar in Watching The Wheels? I'm not sure I can hear any, but maybe I'm wrong.
Yes there are two guitars I believe
Can you do "Whatever gets you through the night"?
what strings are you using on bass? great cover... great bass sound, very unique by klaus voorman... i'm waiting for more cover of plastic ono band/imagine albums 👍👍👍
Rotosound flatwounds
Sounds more like "child of nature" to me 🤔😂 fab vid
Awesome, do you plan on doing some songs off of Plastic Ono Band in the future?
Yes, I’ve done Well Well Well already. Will definitely do more
@@sampopkinNice!!
My 2000 remix/remaster CD has NO discernable acoustic guitar part on this song. 😢
Yeah it's most audible on the raw take from ultimate collection edition of Imagine
Hey Sam, great cover! I was wondering what’s going on with the bridge for the bass? It seems like there is a hole on either side of it?
Yes, precision basses come with a chrome bridge cover that prevents you from palm muting. So most p bassists take this cover off, revealing two holes
@@sampopkin ah, thanks. I didn’t know there were holes under the cover
