- Horseshoe Curve, Pennsylvania Trains Climbing The Hill & Working Hard! Mountain Trains On The Norfolk Southern Pittsburgh Line. BIG Coal Train Going Up The Grade With 2 Locomotives Mid Train! Amish Women Love Trains Too! Listen To The 3 Locomotives Working Hard On A Giant Auto Racks Train! These trains are in Pennsylvania near Altoona on the old Conrail main line. 5 Trains are in this video and almost all of them have helpers with some of the helpers being manned.
The first train is a Norfolk Southern manifest, mixed freight, that is eastbound dropping down the hill into Altoona. This train has a couple of NS locomotives and a CSX locomotive. It is rare to see a CSX locomotive on this line. The locomotive on the rear is manned, I believe.
The second train is a westbound intermodal train going up the hill. This is the only train in this video without help.
The third train is a westbound train going up the hill toward Pittsburgh. Check out the Amish women standing on the picnic tables to get a better view starting just before 11:30 in the video! Awesome and not only that but I found out that a few of them watch my videos. My Ohio farm is in an Amish area and I see them go by my house. They have been on my farm to look at my barn but that is another story. This train is a huge auto racks train with an NS locomotive and a leaser locomotive on the front with a Union Pacific DPU locomotive in the middle. This was a good one!
The fourth train is a westbound coal train. This is a long one and has a couple of DPU locomotives in the middle working hard. Listen to the locomotives as they take the train over the hill. The coal train was booking along pretty good. Once again, I saw a snake and nearly stepped on it. The third time this year.
The fifth train is an eastbound tanker train dropping down into Altoona with 4 locomotives. The two locomotives on the rear were manned helper units. They will cut off in Altoona and run back to get another train.
Next we see the motel room where I stayed in Altoona. This is Comfort Suites and the rooms were very nice with high ceilings. It cost about $200 a night. Don't miss the pets at the end and also the slide show that comes from the video. After I left Altoona I went to Cassandra, Pa and stayed the night there at the Cassandra Overlook Inn for $75 a night cash. See my videos from Cassandra! I stopped there on my east and westbound moves across the state.
Filmed Saturday, June 24, 2023 in 1080p with 60fps. Thanks for watching!

As stated the tall gons are old woodchip cars used for hauling trash or construction/demolition debris. Midwest Railcar MWCX has a bunch of new ones floating around. There's a bunch of ex-BN ones with various reporting marks too. The WFRX SD70MACs at least are being used rather than sitting in storage while under BNSF ownership. Wish they would have kept them, it would be a break from all the GEs we see out here in WI/MN.
ive driven a hi rail down horse shoe curve it was cool
Wow
Awesome catch at the big curve!
Hi wwot
I got an Amtrak train going around the curve also. Its in my other video but that place is awesome
That first train had a lot of old cars of all sorts of different types on it. Then a nice new locomotive on the rear pushing.
Yussss!!! Horse shoe is one of my bucket list places to go and spend a day or two at and just enjoy the passing trains!! Thank you Sir for this!!
You should! You will always remember it
This one must be long going uphill
@@carolmcallister1908
Actually it's going downhill.
That DPU was making a JACKASS sound!💯 That tank train was also loud for a train that's just going downhill.
Stay Positive and have a Great week!
Your dogs are adorable and cute I bet they love it when you pet them
Another really great video of trains
and your pets always great to see
your dogs and cats as well as the
trains,Thank You Jaw Tooth.🤠

Train catching at Horseshoe Curve is like shooting fish in a barrel. Thanks for the video Brian.
You do realize that the same train came back I think about and awesome catch at horseshoe curve it's amazing park to spend time at and that is a log autorack manifest so looks like they slowed the train down
Another great video from the living legend Jawtooth!
Jaw Tooth, those tall Hopper cars are full of coal and taken to the NS Sandesky Coal yard to be off load, when they unload these cars, they lift up the entire car and flip the car upside down and the coal goes down a shut to conveyor belts and then taken to be loaded on board ship or stored in the yard facility. I saw video about this about 2 weeks ago, Very fascinating how they do this.
AWESOME GOOD VIDEO THANK YOU JT I APPRECIATE IT AND YOU HAVE A GOOD DAY, JIM KAMMERER OF PHILADELPHIA PA 👌
😅nice that jet power engine J 97 fichterjet. F 104 G.Starfichter. 😂thanks for the super coool video. greetz:🍐Peer.🍻cheers.
Howdy JT! Man I am really loving the Horseshoe Curve. Might have to check that out some day!
Few Notes: The 'WFRX' locomotives are leased engines from Wells Fargo Rail. Apparently they have some old BNSF locos in their lease inventory lol. The high side gondolas are more than likely trash/garbage cars. They are used to transport garbage from large metropolitan areas to landfills. If they are loaded there will be some mesh netting over the top to keep any trash from flying out.
Great stuff as always - thanks for sharing 🤠
@Cowboy_Steve thank you for reinforcing what I just found out about "WFRX". JawTooth and WideWorldofTrains show a great number of trains from NYC heading west to Ohio with long trains of NYC garbage.
Don't step on snek!
As I was watching all those tank cars on that last train I couldn't help but notice a lot of 7070XX numbers. I thought, wouldn't it be cool if I saw 707070. Then I spotted it, I was happy. Then you panned with it, I was happier. Great minds think alike.
Glad you enjoyed it! Always something interesting in the railroad world
What a great spot! I'd love to see a train do a horn salute to "shave and a haircut, two bits!" That would be fun!
thank you for the overhead shot of the park. Now it makes more sense!
They had this all trimmed down in 2016 and now look at it. Like was never touched.
I was staying at Bridgeview Bed and Breakfast when you were filming here at the Curve. I saw these same trains crossing Rockville bridge
Good video Jawtooth
Thanks James!
I always love taking the Amtrack around the curb
Nice video of horseshoe!
Great place horse shoe curve great catches great video thanks Jaw tooth
Thank you, Jaw Tooth, for sharing the pride of Pennsylvania - "The Horseshoe Curve" - an engineering marvel.
Always glad to have you visit us in PA!
Be safe and may God bless you!
You bet!
I just love horseshoe curve , awesome trains awesome scenery. Love seeing trains defying gravity upgrade or down, and those DPUS and manned helpers really get a workout on this mountain grade. Thanks JT, stay cool my friend.👍🏼those hi-side gondolas, some are used for woodchips , and these are used for hauling trash.
Nice video nice scenery.
Got me in your video good Jawtooth I'm the one with the BNSF T-SIRT & NS hat.

Great video today JT, as always! Thanks 👍 for including the pets. ❤😊😊
🥰💞💖💖 Awesome video JT beautiful fur babies I enjoyed watching ♥️🥰❤
Thank you 🤗
Hi, what i understand is that the rail company's rents out their engines too a rental company, they have to keep their original colors and numbers but they have to use their own company's name. BNSF and UP bought AMTRAK when they went bankrupt. the two owners had to buy it personally so they borrowed from their own companies and thru the governments loan program and they acquired Amtrak. repaid back their own companies loan. sketchy this was. they also partnered with anhouser lumber on acquiring CN so anhouser can cut down Canada's old growth that is around the tracks with a slight deviation. This leaked out and Canada cancelled this loan agreement. BNSF and UP bought CN and they been buying up other rail companies.
I just got my West Virginia Railroad Museum Newsletter. Did you see the 1946 Cadillac Series 62 Rail Car? My brother was a founding member of this group. One of the last things we did together before his cancer diagnosis was to attend their convention and ride the spe ial train to Phillipi.
I enjoyed that video👍👍
thanks for the vids !
Glad you like them!
Awesome video jaw tooth, I have to go there one day.
Love your videos and I love to hear the story about your barn and the Amish.
Thanks!
JawTooth 👌👌
Great video 👌👌👌👍🚂🚃
Good Morning Ja w Tooth. Start the video.
Can't go wrong at horseshoe curve thanks for going and showing the videos....
It looks like BNSF unloaded some older locos on Wells Fargo, which rented them to Norfolk Southern.
I wish I could have a 58th birthday again 😂❤, those Gondola cars could do with a lick of paint 🎉looking a bit shabby, love this spot for railfanning, thanks J.T 😊❤
lotsa good stuff!
Yes nice 👏 👌 👍 great trains 🚆 2 start the week 👍 nice ❤️ 👌 👍 place
Nice salute toot , beautiful scenery. Love those locomotives.😊 Beautiful! A long beautiful train with a NS at the end. Happy Birthday Thomas!❤😊 You picked a cool place to video Mr JT. And.. get lots of salute toots!

That dpu #8385, had good reason scream, both having to push & pull that load 😮
Thanks for showing the autocars! We watch for the graffiti and appreciate your work \m/
Any time!
I'm amazed at the number of conrail gondolas still in service.
🎉 in bio😅😅
Cool video! I would love to come visit the historic Horseshoe Curve.

@@FabianDiazTrainsTrucksNCars Thanks Fabian!
😅the 29th mine birdsday next saturday,72 its gonnabey time is flying.😂
@12:00 you mentioned that train had foreign power working it. That particular engine, #8909 WFRX (whoever that is) looked like an older BNSF engine now working under the WFRX banner. I guess that company are contracting engine power to NS, CSX and BNSF to help in the work. Oh, I just looked it up, Wells Fargo Rail formerly First Union Rail Corporation and GE Capital Rail Services under among other things a Sale/LeaseBack agreement.
@25:34 "DPU, I see you, and you too"!!!
@31:03 Could one say that these two tank cars are "Flux Capacitors"??? Needless to say I don't think that you will see that train get to 88 MPH here!!! I wonder just how many Gigawatts of power does it take to move a train like that?? 😅😅😅😅
@35:07 Now that is the first time I have ever seen an engineer in a DPU!! Now that is worth waving at!!! And he is a "Honkie" too @35:12!!! Way to Go Driver!!!
the bay line car's you were asking about go to Hainesport NJ for recycling of trash
I was there yesterday
1st train is 38g, and the tall gons are for trash, mostly contruction debris. They tend to catch on fire. Last train was 67e.
Thank you for this additional video of your stop at Horseshoe Curve on the Norfolk Southern's Pittsburg Line on 24 June 2023, Jaw Tooth! This video had a nice variety of trains going around Horseshoe Curve. From the angle that you were taking the video clips, I could not tell whether that coal train going toward Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania was loaded with coal or not loaded with coal. There did not appear to be a hump of coal showing above the top of the car to indicate that the car was loaded with coal. I have a question that you or someone who reads this comment can answer. I have noticed, in all the videos that I have seen of trains at Horseshoe Curve, that there is a block building with a chimney sitting between the fence and the tracks. What is the purpose of that block building? Was it used in by-gone days by switch tenders who would through switches and make sure that the switches were cleared of snow in the winter?
The train going toward Pittsburgh is most likely not full of coal. I do believe the cold typically comes from West Virginia, through Pittsburgh, and east around the curve and then onto Power plants
Cool spot!!
Thanks 👍
Your first 2 trains...one had 4339 leading and the next train had 4338 leading. Just an interesting note. Great video!!
Yeah whats the chances of seeing that occurance
😅is that one Amish fanclub from the railroads?almost Volendam in the NL.lol.😅
Wow that car at 5:00 of the video the lumber rapper is along way from home. From Roseburg Timber products, Roseburg Oregon. Or one of the other mills they own in Oregon.
On the road again...
wow the new dog is growing fast... chessie better look out.
He weights 26.1 pounds already. We have only had had Loki for 10 months
That intermodal wasn’t that long but that third train autoracks went on for sooo long
Хорошо стоим и снимаем поезд который идёт мимо твоего собственного дома где ты живёшь сам. Милое дело.
Why is some CSX and NS auto rack cars hooked together?
And CN rail cars?
And Ferromex?
just random rolling stock , NS Gondolas are probably in California right now
I always wondered that as well. I have a theory... lol... I think they are all jumbled together at the auto mixing/loading yards, then get sorted out at other yards based on where they are going. It would be difficult for, say, the Ford mixing yard near Fostoria, OH to load up all at the same time a bunch of UP or BNSF autoloaders that might be heading West. More cost effective to mix them all together and then sort them at a yard farther down the line. I have nothing to back that up... just spitballing here.
That first train had to be a mile or longer. Wow! Nice video, but than again they always are.
Thank you very much!
Great shot coming around the bend, the first train .
HAY JT. its me RICHARD BUNKER if you can go to PA stop in Hancock MD. they a rall yard and it and tracks that are very buss its off WV RT. 522 I live 12 miles south of it 😀🥰
AYO CSX ON THE CURVE
Every Rail Fan east of the Mississippi MUST make the pilgrimage to Altoona to see The Curve at least Once in their lives .
A great day. Go down to Altoona where they build the trains to go up to the curve in the yards. The railroad museum is down the and is very interesting. I didn't realize the curve was so important during WW II. It had US troops stationed there to prevent sabotage that would shut down our rail system. We drove up to Gallitzen and watched the trains come out of the tunnel they pass through at the top of 5he bend. All in all an interesting and fun day. Trains, history, and scenery what more do you need
Merci beaucoup pour cette très belle vidéo ! 👍🙏
Good afternoon Brian, the squeeking of the wheel flanges is music in the ear of every train fan round the World. The Horseshoe curve is a georgious example of railway construction. Greatings from your German fan 👍 🇺🇸 🇩🇪.

Saw your videos have you ever been to the transportation musem in St. Louis area? They have a train yard with a lot of old trains to look at.
They are working hard, aren't they? Sounds awesome! 😊😊😊
Wow, that was a lot of coal! Coal trains are one of my favorites also. 😊😊😊
Mine too!
The autorack consists went on forever. Must have been two miles long
We have a train depot here in grand rapids michigan on plainfield ave and leonard that has been a restaurant for decades... super popular and great food... i've been there about 30 times. i keep kidding the owner opertor Rick about the time his tip jar was stolen by a customer who never comes there anymore... we all laugh as i put another dollar in the tip jar.
