I read all the original Frank Herbert Dune books (twice) and also 3 of the books written by his son Brian. Although Brian doesn't write the way his father did I think the books are faithful to the original. One of the books is "House Harkonnen" and it tells the story of how the Baron went from a svelte, virile and athletic man to a man so large and massive he has to use artificial suspender units to even get around. I am glad these adaptations are (mostly) staying nearer to the source material b/c it is some good stuff.
These adaptations piss all over the source material. The real message of dune is never trust females. The benegesserit are playing everyone so they can over throw the imperium from behind the scenes in a bloodless coup. Everything horrible on every planet everywhere in the imperium is exactly the way the witches want it because all that matters to them is seizing control of the galaxy via their male reverend mother. Dennis "you go girl" villeneau is not the right man to direct a movie about how evil women are when left to their own volition.
Found those books very enjoyable. And easier reading as well. The story of the Baron's change drove home just how powerful the Bene Jesseret are at internal manipulations of a body.
One concern I have regarding this upcoming dune movie which completes the first book is how the trailers at least are portraying chianis character. It appears she is very distrustful of Paul attreidis as the chosen one , where in one line she says to the fremen people , this prophecy is how they enslave us " that is not in the book. Chiani was actually very loyal to Paul and very much engaged with her religious customs. The overall message of frank herberts dune , is the message that throughout human history people have blindly followed charismatic men, and accepted them as even messiahs when they are not, abs the question is why ?? Frank Herbert actually discusses this in some of his recorded interviews . Bottom line is hopefully chiani in this movie doesnt deviate a lot from her character in the book. Dune messiah is really where this can be better explored
